There are two Rosenfeld's in Ocean City, MD; this one is the farther south, just before Route 90. It is an old building, crammed into a first floor retail space with tiny public area (two cafe tables), cashier, refrigerated display cases and kitchen in back. Word is that the owners wanted to close this shop when they opened the new more expansive operation a few miles north, but public outcry convinced them it was worth holding on to their heritage space. That is probably right, despite the obvious inconveniences. My son and I enjoyed hanging out there and eating our lunches in a space that spoke "old Jewish deli," rather than getting everything to go and eating in the car.
The food was traditional and delightful. My Matzoh Ball Soup was steamy hot and delicious, with large semi-dense matzoh ball, chunks of carrot, shredded chicken and noodles in a rich consommé. Reminded of grandma's best. The Cheese Blintzes were also perfect. Sweet creamy cheese filling inside a thin crepe shell. My son's Corned Beef Reuben on Marble Rye was about 3.5" high and loaded with smoked meat, melted Swiss and Russian dressing. He devoured it without offering me a taste. The walls were covered with old advertising for other historic delis and large Rosenfeld's logo.
Captivating.
So, why only 4 Stars? Well, we had driven 4 hours with hopes of having a very late breakfast of Matzoh Brie, but discovered they stopped breakfast at 2:00 p.m. No exceptions. Their unwillingness to bend the rule despite the ease of preparing our request was a bit wooden, given they were open for several more hours and not overly busy.
Regardless, we hold no grudge, and hope to drop in early enough next time to make that breakfast cutoff, or have the lunch menu include our desires.
