The Best Bars In Berlin

"If you’re in Kreuzberg, it’d be a crime not to pop your head into Roses. The 20+-year-old queer bar—with furry pink walls, padded leather ceilings, rotating mirror balls, leopard print stools, glittering Madonnas, and ashtrays in the toilet—is one of the best places to start or end any high-octane night out. It’s cash only, the soundtrack is strictly pop classics, and the boxed wine is almost undrinkable. (That said, the gin tonics go down almost too easily.) Roses closes at 6am every day, so you can easily be sucked in and spat out once the sun has risen. " - olivia ladanyi

Had a really good time at Roses, was lively even though it was a Wednesday night. Friendly bouncer and bartender. Very fun atmosphere and interior. It's very smoky in there though, so your clothes will smell of smoke afterwards

Google
If I could rate it less than one star I would. The crowd is nice enough but the man at the bar couldn’t be meaner for no reason. Maybe he should resolve his own issues at home before bringing them to a “safe space” :) best to avoid, so many better places in the area.

Google
It's one of the best bars in Berlin. I prefer to go on Sundays since it is less crowded and you find no instagram people. Regular audience is fun and barmans are amazing. Music is definitely the best. And yes please, don't take pictures there.

Google
Beautiful decor, lady at the bar who i assume to be the owner is fully unhinged. it could benefit this place to get sane but more importantly at least somewhat sober staff. actually do not grab me, my biggest pet peeve that immediately makes me have an awful time

George Petalidis (Petallika)

Google
The bouncer was a typical and hard to describe berliner bouncer. I understand that the bar is FLINTA friendly and i love the community. But checking us out from the CLOTHING and giving attitude (even being desgusted) that we are normally dressed is pure racism and not protecting the bar or your clients. A rejection simply by telling us you are not fitting would be enough.

Google
I was there on Saturday, quite small one club. Same as many other bar it is also a smoke bar. Hmmm….i stayed there until 22:30 around. The door security was nice and friendly have to say, no problem with him at all.

Google
Bartender spit a lovely young queer guy into his face and kicked him out! Shame on you rose’s! No safe space!

:D

Google
I never had a bad experience here. I became a regular for a little since I lived down the street, and brought a lot of friends here. The staff was always extremely nice to me, I felt welcomed and accepted. Coming here on random weekdays at 2am and getting to dance with strangers to the great music and enjoy the atmosphere was incredible. They are strict on who they let in sometimes but it’s to create a safer atmosphere. I always recommend Roses!

Yelp
80s music is good but the barman warned me not to take my own pictures (selfies) but some people are using their cameras by flash! Is this because I am not or do not speak German? Shit! Barman is cute tho but this was rude! --- Update on 06-Feb-2016 Well, I received a very kind message from the barman (Steve) and I wanted to make clear of my referral about not being German or speaking German. My intention was not mentioning anything racist yet sometimes people do not want to deal with tourists (language can be barrier for communicating). We both explained our reasons and now everything is solved. Thanks again for paying attention to my comment and taking a serious action.

Yelp
A dive-like bar with a cozy vibe and very friendly patrons and staff. Made several friends hanging out here and really appreciated the hip hop playlist (was ready for a little break from techno). If you want to go out but are looking for a change of pace from the club scene, this is a great spot.

Yelp
I reported that I got physically sexually harassed in the bathroom and the barkeeper told me to not come to the bar if I don't want to be touched. I used to be a regular but never went there again and never will. if you prefer not to be violently and unconsentually touched at your private parts, you are not welcome at this bar!

Casey T.

Yelp
Don't go to this bar. I was having a great time until this old hag dressed like a flapper was super rude. She didn't like that I was ignoring her after she made it super awkward to be at that bar then told me I needed to go home after 2 vodka sodas.

Joe N.

Yelp
Super fun atmosphere. I met a very friendly patron sitting at the bar as well. However the bartender was beyond rude. First time there so I asked what vodkas they have because they have a giant wall of liquor behind the bar. The bartender sarcastically replied "we have vodka..." rolled his eyes and walked away. I waiter another 10 mins for him to stop chatting with friends who weren't even at the bar. Finally he comes back, i sheepishly order a beer down it and leave. Seems like I was sized up pretty hard as a tourist and that's a shame.

Stefan K.

Yelp
Unfriendly bouncer, didn't let us in, but the next guys were pretty welcome. We found a better club

Yelp
***PLEASE READ THIS*** Arrived with an old friend on Monday, 9th September, sat at the bar and had two Becks. We weren't drunk, loud or inappropriate. We wanted to order another drink, however the bartender (who was very obviously drugged, drunk, or both) didn't want to sell us drinks, even though we had money. The reason: we didn't tip him earlier. How do I know? Because he literally said: "No tips, no drinks" I was gobsmacked! Even the two guys next to us were shocked and asked him how he can even say such thing. I didn't tip him because his service was abysmal. All night he was extremely arrogant towards us and other customers. You could see on other people's faces that they felt intimidated by his behaviour. Roses is known in Berlin as a place of tolerance, and I hope that management will do something about this. At the end of the day, we were paying costumers! Deeply disappointed.

Yelp
I was pretty underwhelmed by this place. The interior is weird (definitely) and in a cool way. However the crowd is really old. I've been earlier in the evening (11-ish) and closer to 1, both times I was just bored by the music and the people. I wish I could say nice things, because I really wanted to like this place, but i guess it just wasn't meant to be. Also, it seems to definitely be a GAY bar and not a LGBT bar (at least 85% gay middle aged men). Just FYI.

Yelp
I was looking at a photo of my husband and a friend on our mantel from when we took a photo Roses in my first trip to Berlin in 2004. I've been back several times since and, first, am amazed by how gentrified Kreuzberg has become. Where's my favorite doner shop we'd stop at after a night out with a stop in Roses? It seems the crowd gets younger each year or I'm getting older, but it's like a pilgrimage and we must stop for 3,4 maybe more drinks here each visit. Yes, that bartender can be rude, gurl, get over it. Drinks are cheap here, as most are in Germany. Fun atmosphere and usually catchy music, last time was 80's dance music.

Yelp
Tiny. Smoky. Batshit crazy. You need to visit Roses. Some other review compared drinking at Roses Bar to partying in a Muppet's womb, and I think that's an incredibly apt description. The walls are pink, plush and furry. Everywhere you look, there are quirky, irreverent decorations and blinking lights. Fog machines and disco balls. It's like somebody set off a kitsch-bomb, and we're all just partying amongst the shrapnel. The people watching is epic, as this place seems to attract a pretty artistic and flamboyant crowd. You'll be packed like sardines. I had my backpack with me, and my god was that a pain in the ass. Maybe it's better in the summer when everybody doesn't have big, heavy coats, but we left after a couple of drinks before claustrophobia set in too hard. Plus, the extreme smokiness of the space was making my eyes hurt. Don't spend too long at Roses Bar. But do visit. It's an experience you won't forget.

Yelp
This bar represents what I love most about Berlin. Right vibe, right mix of people, and as unique and unpredictable as a bar can get. I

Yelp
"Here it is!" I looked up at the darkened sign with a rose engraved in it which gently swayed in the frigid night air. "The door is shag carpet." "Come on! Don't be so scared." "But the door is covered in shag carpet!" In we went and it was like entering a sailors bar on the west coast of the States back in the day. Not that there were sailors but there were interesting people that just stood in deep thought around the bar, everything seemed like it was in slow motion or maybe that was the German beer slowing my syntactic processing. It's very small inside and there are two sections. The pondering people at the bar and the dance area which is tiny. Excellent fun, unpretentious and I would definitely recommend hitting this spot up. The music was great. The religious iconography in the loo was blasphemous. The pink shag carpet walls made me feel like I was in the womb of a muppet. I also learned that I need to expand my language abilities as flirting is fine until you get to the communication stage, there is only so many times you can gesticulate wildly before folks assume that you are having a fit. We stumbled out at 5am and the party just got started, oh Berlin.

Yelp
What a quirky place. Definitely worth seeing but it would not be a regular place for me. The pink furry walls are incredible, but I would be scarred to see the state of them (and their cleanliness, or lack thereof) in daylight. This is seriously where kitsch goes to die. It is waaaaaaaayyyy over decorated. I think if you took away 75% of what's there it'd be perfect. The staff is very friendly and the prices are reasonable. The crowd is also surprisingly sexually diverse for a gay bar. I though my boyfriend would be the one getting hit on, but instead I was the one who was hit on -- both by a creepy old man and by someone more appropriately aged and mannered. It is quite small but the back room has more space and seating but not much more.

Yelp
This place is kind of amazing. Laid out with fury pink walls and random art, sculptures, disco balls and obscure decor it reminds me of what it would feel like tripping on shrooms trapped in a room full of stuffed animals and toys. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT! Its an experience. Its a cozy venue, friendly crowd, dive bar meets drag queen style and is worth hanging around for a few drinks. What a trip!

Yelp
Nice place but this used to be a gay bar, now it's mostly tourist-inhabited gay-friendly hetero bar, which is a bit disappointment for gays who look for an exclusively gay night. It's a super small bar, but the place has kind of become a landmark in Kreuzberg nightlife. Drinks are cheap.

Yelp
A gay bar with PINK, FURRY walls. If you knew nothing more about Roses Bar, then you'd still probably think it was worth visiting. That's the situation I was in. Indeed, the decor is interesting. However, when I was there it was one of those humid 30C+ summer days in Berlin and standing outside the bar was definitely preferable to being inside...

Yelp
This bar was recommended to us by some friends who visited earlier this year. Roses is a small bar on Oranienstraße famous for its totally pink interior. The walls are totally covered in pink fur (although it could do with a bit of a shampoo!). Everything is pink. I can't really describe it! The drinks were fairly reasonably priced, and the bar staff friendly. We went about 10 p.m. on a Saturday, and it was only just warming up; perhaps if we had arrived later and stayed longer we might have found a different atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit, although have other places nearby in mind in case it's not that busy!

Yelp
This is the craziest bar on the planet. It's tiny, it's fluffy, it's cute, it's rude, it's everything at the same time. The drinks are nasty, especially the beers. But the atmosphere is breath taking. Would love to give it a 5, but it's just so crowded there at times that you might not even physically be able to get in....nor out. But it's an experience to have been there at least once visiting berlin.

Yelp
Went there my last night in Berlin and I regret that I didn't go there sooner. It was a crazy and wild night. Even if you'd go alone you'll end up having a good time. I wont go into details about bath, deco and all that. For me it was a great night.

Yelp
Great retro environment. Unnecessarily rude bartender and subpar service. Cash only, and if you don't bring exact change, be ware.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the coolest places I have ever been. The drink are cheap, the atmosphere is very welcoming and fun. The decor is absolutely insane. I could not stop looking around and touching everything. I went on a weekday but that didn't stop the party. Everyone was dancing and singing and partying until early morning. I cannot wait to come back.

Yelp
A favourite pitstop before hitting the clubs. At Roses, you get your fill of flamingo coloured hairy wallpaper, drinks with more alcohol in the ice and mixers, music that have you dancing to 90's and 80's music that you would otherwise never be caught with on your ipod. Specialties: Men in all kinds of clothes. A guy in the bathroom begging to sell you coke, to buy him a drink or at least lend him money for the bus. (serisouly he is there every time). When to go: before 11 then you will get a seat after 11.. you will have to stand up When to leave: When the guy from the bathroom gets too annoying or you know its time for Berghain.

Yelp
Funny place to have your last drink if you're out during the week or if you don't know where to go. Always have fun going there with friends.

Wendy W.

Yelp
My friends and I were looking forward to coming here. It was on the list of places to visit but unfortunately the bartender was just flat out rude. Actually he was mean. The ambiance was pretty cool but we had one drink and left because he made us so incredibly uncomfortable. The other customers were nice and the music was ok. Unfortunately the bartender ruined it for us and we left.

Yelp
Pretty crazy place with people from all walks of life. Beer is cheap but it can get super crowded. Really smoky place but so is every bar in Berlin.

David W.

Yelp
The decor in this place is AMAZING. You should visit it just to take in the walls, ornaments and lights they have going on. True meaning of camp. Also, good value for money and a great atmosphere with quick service.

Cem Y.

Yelp
Probably not the most appealing bar in Berlin. There's no catchy songs and the bartender was quite rude to our group. There are very nice people inside though, but the drinks are cheap so that's a plus but anyway I wouldn't go there again.

Yelp
Best place to have drinks in Berlin. Love the friendly people and the over the top furnishing. Always come here at least once when I'm in Berlin!
google avatar

Mareike L.

Yelp
Plush. Plush. Plush. EVERYWHERE. I went here a couple of times and always had a good time. Its a unique space but it gets super crowded, super smokey and later the toilets are always flooded. Still def worth checking out and have a beer with your friends.

Yelp
A great atmosphere with all the glam decoration, people were laid back and the staff was also nice. I was there at 4am and was still packed. Fun.

Yelp
The place to show in Berlin to tourists.

Erick C.

Yelp
The bartender was super rude! (after reading the reviews I am seeing a pattern) I tried to be polite and also said "thanks" as well as tipped. Its sad because the music was good and people had recommended it. But a rude bartender does not deserve my money nor an establishment that hires somebody like that. Save your money and go elsewhere!

Mary K.

Yelp
Please do not go to this place if you are a tourist - it is run by a dishonest, unpleasant barman who refuses to return change and insists huge tipping is 'the way' in Germany. I eventually got my change back (the only place in Germany where a system of trust is not in place) but the barman was in such a huff that I called him out on his dishonesty that he got the bouncer to throw myself and my friend out. Can I say, NEVER in my life have I ever been thrown out of a bar and it was such a pity that it happened in a cool, hip city like Berlin. I'm sorry but I don't accept dishonest behaviour - we were tourists and we weren't gay but hey love the music and love the vibe in gay bars. This nasty little prima donna barman spoiled it but he was allowed to do so. There are plenty other cool hip bars in Berlin to go to - please do not go here (unless you're friends with the barman).
google avatar

Qype User (grossl…)

Yelp
interior with the look of miss piggys vagina. bartenders who are just as ready, willing, and able to get sloppy drunk as the customers are, music that would kill your ears in any other setting but seems perfect in this one. and an average of a person fainting, falling down, or otherwise hurting themselves one out of every three times ive been here. in other words: i love this place. most bars in berlin are really just boring cafes with the lights turned down. it took a notorious gay bar to give a bar a sense of adventure again. btw, drinks are cheap, and its pretty easy to make friends with the bartenders which usually leads to large amounts of free shots with them.
