Best Restaurants at Santana Row and Valley Fair in San Jose | Eater SF

"This is Santana Row’s go-to lowkey pub and bar. The bar’s been around for more than a decade, is terrific for pints of Guinness and for dishes including blackened chicken and mahi mahi tuna alike, and even hosts live music on a regular basis. Drop by for a happy hour or get comfortable for a vibey evening." - Johanna Harlow

One of my favorite spots! The food is fantastic (Shepherd's pie, bangers, and mash, and the best apple turnover with vanilla ice cream I've ever had!). The people that work here are fantastic, special thanks to Joe and Wes for always making us feel like family!

Really great time tonight on St Paddy’s. Tons of music, sing along, great drinks and the food was fantastic. Corned beef Super tender and not salty- cabbage and carrots cooked just right. Really impressed. They did a great job especially for that amount of people.

Google
Excellent service, good atmosphere and food. We had fish & chips and corned beef and cabbage. They were very good but didn't wow us. Excellent french fries and the fish was a bit greasy. Corned beef and cabbage was good but lacked seasoning...needed more salt. Good selection of beers, many of them local. We will definitely go back to try others on the menu.

I absolutely love this place every single time I come in! The staff are so kind, and absolutely friendly. The environment is vintage, but clean with a modern element. This restaurant is fun, it’s easy, it’s inexpensive, and it’s top tier casual dining all at once. The food is above standard, with plenty of variety, all met with consistency. From the pastas, to the house burger, every bite is enjoyable. It’s a fun place to take a date. It’s a fun place to casually have dinner. It’s not just good, it’s great! I will definitely be coming back.

Google
Pretty nice 🍀Irish Pub🍀. Understaffed on our visit. The fish&chips was good but not much fish and a ridiculously small amount of chips! Come on man, chips are a low stakes item to be skimping on and besides, they were good! Also you should know better than to keep an Irishman from his taters! Looks like they have specials and things happening throughout the week so maybe check their website? I'll be back on a Thursday night for the music. The Guinness was delicious! 🙌🏼

All zeroes. Because as a disabled person they exclude me and anyone else who can't climb the twenty foot flight of stairs. And, this is no accident, absolutely intentional. I have spoken to their manager/owner for several years. The first time I posted a negative review, he printed out a lame little office paper sign to let people know about the freight elevator in back, in a dark alley, with no signs visible. The picture shows the front recently with zero signage. I have a complaint on file but it's not the simple process that it sounds like. I'm not trying to get paid, but I hope it costs Rosie's a lot I have been by there probably 20 times. Each of those was a time I was essentially denied access by not being able to climb those damn steps. The law says they can be fined significantly for each time access is denied. If you have compassion for the disabled, walk on by and let them know why.

Google
What a fantastic experience! The ambiance was warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed yummy meal. Austin was attentive and friendly, making sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. He suggested great beers and food. Dessert was a highlight, bread pudding, which was rich and satisfying. Overall, Rosie's delivered on all fronts—great food, excellent service, and a lovely atmosphere. I’ll definitely be back!!

Google
Loved the food and drinks! Came in at a (not very busy) brunch time and really enjoyed (with a partner) a hot toddy, cranberry whiskey sour, bangers and mash, and pancake and egg breakfast. Great vibe of the restaurant overall, too

Yelp
We wanted an Irish Pub to celebrate St Patrick's Day. We found the best place. I had the Reuben Sandwich. The fries were delicious along with the sandwich just the right amount of corned beef, Saur kraut, Swiss cheese and sauce on marble rye bread. Service was friendly and stopping by to check on us to see how we were doing. The only thing which was off was our dishes coming at different times. But it was busy. They had live Irish music which added to the festivities of the day And of course I had a Guiness on draft. Very smooth with a nice head of beer

Yelp
Great restaurant! Went here only once but gosh, the food was goood. Fast service, nice staff, and the prices were very reasonable.

Yelp
Super cool spot upstairs in downtown. Good food and beer. Great service. Turns into a club vibe at night on the weekends. Free comedy was horrible, but at least it was free.

Yelp
Rosies does it all: brunch, dinner, night club! I love Rosie's for a night time drink but I tried their brunch and it was pretty decent as well. I got the Belgium waffle and a side of eggs and I was not disappointed! I enjoyed my meal. The only complaint was the burrito, but maybe it was the carne asada. The service was great, but they didn't tell us they were out of something until we ordered it. It was casual service but still very nice. The straws did not have sleeves though! The atmosphere is very Irish! So cute. Over all the ambiance, service and food were solid.

Yelp
4 of us got 2 corned beef and cabbage meals and 2 Shepard Pie meals. The Shepard Pie portions were substantial but as for the corned beef, for $23 there should have been a lot more corned beef...A Lot! It was pretty skimpy. Not to mention it was kind of dry. Keep an eye on the charges on your bill. We were overcharged for just about EVERYTHING. Specially all 4 meals and one drink were overcharged from the prices on the menu by a total of $15 total! The waitress corrected it but forgot to fix the drink which was overcharged by $3. I've never been there before and I won't go there again.

Yelp
Service was really good. I had an omelette that tasted fishy. Wondering if the grill is shared for fish and other foods. I am allergic to fish. I'm hoping management sees this. Also for the omelettes, make sure you whip the eggs.

Yelp
My wife and I rolled into Rosie's Sunday morning after crunching at the Walnut Cafe. We sat down mid bar and were greeted by Auston, who proceeded to take care of us throughout our entire experience this afternoon. Not only was he engaging and funny, he truly made our day by just being himself... at least that's the impression that we got. (We have no reason to believe otherwise.) Not only did we receive exemplary service but he went above and beyond to help me to make pre-birthday experience for my wife... extra special. Without his knowledge of it being her nearly her birthday, while she went to the bathroom I asked Auston if I could purchase a piece of decor that she had her eye on. Well, to sum it up... he was able to make it happen and this was the result! Thank you Auston!

Yelp
I ordered my food to go. The single star is for flavor of the food. The food tastes perfectly fine. However food is only half of what matters, the other half is staff and execution. The issues were with the burger. To start, the burger was placed in a cardboard at the very bottom of 4 other larger boxes with heavier items, totally squishing the cardboard box in on itself. Working exclusively in kitchens and restaurants, there is no way that was not intentional. It is common sense which order you need to pack food in, you never put the most fragile item/box at the bottom. That reads to me as a classic case of staff throwing a tantrum about getting an order within the last hour of being open. I understand, it is frustrating. I don't like getting orders near closing time either. But it is part of the job. Aside from that, the kitchen either blatantly ignored the "medium well" order or they just don't know how what that means or how to do it. I had to cook the burger myself when it arrived, it was barely seared on the outside and super pink in the middle. An infant orangutan could have done better. The only benefit to it being undercooked is that it actually tasted good and was hot after I cooked it. Again, the flavor of the food was fine. But it is embarrassing for whichever amature cook made the burger - it is literally the only item in the whole order that requires any care and attention to detail. The only item that requires any skill or any real cooking. Medium well is just about the easiest temp to hit for any protein, and to mess that up and UNDER cook it, is laughable. The rest of the order was easy to throw together, but to have a crew so lazy they also treat raw meat as no big deal, as if people can't get sick or die from food - It is concerning.... As a kitchen manager, I am not impressed. It is not hard to make food taste good, especially when you heavily rely on salt and fats (mash & gravy, bacon, onion rings, fries, cheese, butter) What makes a cook or FOH staff stand out is how they execute and order. You can tell how much care goes into anything that comes from staff directly to you, and this one felt like a slap in the face cuz they were annoyed.

Yelp
I come here for the food! Sometimes it is weird to go to a pub to eat because I don't drink. However, I adore eating here. The fish and chips is solid. The battered crust is so good, deep golden and just the right crunch. Coated fries perfectly done. Spicy slaw is tasty. Service is friendly and attentive, food arrived quickly, piping hot and appealing. I like to get there when they open and sit by the sunny window overlooking Pacific Avenue. In the dining area there are a good number of tables, and some tall cozy booths. I'm sure it gets busy later, but I go when it is quiet and have had many nice meals.

Yelp
It's not Irish at all anymore. It's McDonald's mixed with a taqueria. To make sure you understand that the entire kitchen are dissing Irish- the food is missing its key ingredients, mixed with hot water - and uncooked. Microwave. The place has no bread basket, they came out with a hideous triangle of the fakest thing like dennys only worse, dripping vegetable oil. Bread. For dinner. And every dish is garnished with Mexican herbs and colours. Like that's funny. It's not funny. You drive 100 miles to visit the only Irish restaurant still here - and it's worse than fast food. It took exactly five minutes ( frozen in a box into a microwave) and then some trader joe salad straight in a clump from a bag. It's not like I go to dinner often. Twice per month. This was so pathetic. It's a cyclone outside with rain fog and wind gusts of up to 60 and ... the fireplace is totally broken. From not servicing it! And to add insult to injury- the two bartenders who have to take the order for the hearth room ? ? Refused to help any customers who wanted food. They just wouldn't nod. Wouldn't say we'll be there. Wouldn't . They heard from the doorway so I stood in a line at the end of the bar next to four other people/ two separate groups in front of me who had not been handed a menu for over ten minutes- they stated. I waved the mini do the light shone and other bar customers turned and started pointing to help us all. Is that acceptable for a dinner restaurant who only had : five tables full- in the fancy dining room, out of more than twenty tables. These odds show you some very poor service . One friendly wave and assurances are all necessary to make hungry people wait happily. So I'm in here listening to the unhappy complaining other people- as they also found the food thrown together in a mush. Ugly , dripping hot water and oil. Anti Irish. The kitchen are ruining the meals on the menu on purpose- I have peeked in to see what is their problem, they're talking trash about people to each other in a huddle , and complaining and just unhappy people. So the food reflects that. It might be a competition to outdo each other on ruining the place based upon their own miserable lives. Once upon a time there was an owner who knew Ireland. The owner now knows how to charge too much whilst walking the good ingredients out the back door and hired people who are angry and jealous, obstinately destroying what was Irish into a ripped off disappointing gross insult. Do not come in here and hope for good food - that you will not find. But listen to people after they're outside sadly stating they blew a lot of money on microwave mashed potatoes from a box.

Yelp
It was a cold rainy night and I wanted some good warm food and a drink. Well that's exactly what I got! The Lamb Stew w/ garlic mash potatoes was great, rich flavors and tender meat. Bacon Wrapped Prawns for a starter was delicious with all the goodness you expect when bacon meets prawns LOL And for desert Warm Bread Pudding :) :) :) All the food was so good. But then so were the drinks, I had a Gin Flower & a Pama Blossom and both were tasty & potent :) The service is quick & friendly and the restaurant was clean & bright. It's a pretty busy downtown area but there is plenty of pay parking lots.

Yelp
Best time to get there is before the dinner rush when when can relax not feel pressured to eat quickly enjoy the ambience a really great meal. Service was quick and attentive.

Yelp
Great food, variety of menu options, great bloody Mary's ! Definitely a great stop for breakfast or lunch!

Yelp
The bouncer (white) on duty the night of May 17th (early morning of the 18th) was just blatantly racist, waving me (white) through then immediately targeting my partner who isn't white, telling him he was gonna have to pat him down. The look he gave my partner said it all. Then, when my partner started taking things out of his pockets to be pat down, the items kept dropping, and they denied us entry because he's "clearly done for the night." We weren't intoxicated yet. Horrible experience. Apparently other reviews have had similar problems with discrimination based on skin color so clearly this is a trend in the staffing. I hope another person of color doesn't have to put up with this BS. Bouncer needs to be fired. I'd give it a 0 if I could.

Yelp
Would I recommend? I pick maybe. It's not a spot I'd go for a pub experience and there are few of those places left. The bar keeps aren't that great, slow and lack that "pub" charisma that a proper keep should have. As for the Irish part, that's all in the menu to a degree. They do an a good bangers and mash. But then You get Cal/Mex bleed over. Not that the food is bad, having seen and had many of their offerings. Just closer to America pub fare. The prices seem reasonable considering its downtown location. In short, yes for group dining. No to a lads night out.

Yelp
I had the best time at Rosie's after the Scotts Valley tornado. The food - I tried Belgian Waffle with extra whipped cream and fabulous Santa Cruz Coffee Beans coffee. I needed this comfort food. I was met with the best friendliest young ladies and their names are Shelly and Silv, they were attentive and engaging. Superb customer service and smiles and conversation all around. All the staff was really friendly and professional. I usually have Shepard's Pie but today was yummy fresh Belgian Waffle. Next time I come back its Fish & Chips! Treat yourself to a meal here. Delicious!

Yelp
BEST IRISH NACHOS!!! Nothing hits like those nachos with a nice Moscow mule :)) go here!!

Yelp
Fun Irish pub in downtown (Pacific) Santa Cruz, CA. The food we ordered was surprisingly good.

Yelp
I have enjoyed hanging out at Rosie McCanns Iin Santa Cruz For years until recently. As I was sitting at the bar enjoying a cold beverage, one of the waiters and the security person were speaking out loud about politics (tucker carlson and trump). I just want to sit and enjoy a beer, dinner and NOT have to listen to politics Not going back!

Avery S.

Yelp
Your text looks mostly good, but here's a slightly polished version with minor adjustments for clarity: I went to Rosie with a few friends. The security guy said that I can't come in with a backpack and that I'll have to leave it with the host downstairs if I want to get it in. It doesn't make any sense. I asked, 'Will the host be here for the whole night?' and the response was, 'We can't guarantee that.' Obviously, we went to the Redroom across the street instead
google avatar

Robin S.

Yelp
I always order my Caesar salad from the Crow's Nest because I love it my girlfriend told me about Rosie's so I thought I'd try it yeah not so great paid extra avocado didn't get it

Yelp
We have been going to Rosie's since our kid was 6 now she's 22 years old, the one in Santana Row. So when we found out they were going to close. We went to say our goodbyes to the wonderful waiter Renato and the wonderful bartender Julio, also said Goodbyes to the chefs but unfortunately never knew their names, My husband and I knew Santa Cruz is a drive but about 4 months or so but we went to get the food to go because we had our Husky girl Koda with us. Well, when we got our food to go, I noticed 1 item was missing. I told them, they I apologized profusely They asked you want a drink, I said no because my husband and my doggy are waiting for me. I didn't know at that time I was talking to the general manager, he told me, tell your husband to come with your doggy and we could eat here at the lounge, which is the back lounge, lots of T.Vs. I was like are you sure he said yes! Dogs are allowed in the lounge area, We were so happy. Like always, Rosie McCann does not disappoint with the food and drinks. Today we took my brother in law and sister in law and of course our girl Koda. We get settled, my husband goes to the bar, he returns and tells me go to the bar. Is the Bartender Julio from Santana Row. I give him a hug, was very happy to see him. Told me a chef and him came from Santana Row. Awesome news! My husband said to me before we left, let's have a great Sunday before we go back to work. We want to thank the general manager who is absolutely Amazing for loving our Koda girl and us too It was great seeing Julio, The Food Is Amazing! Too bad you're not closer , but we will be back. Love you all! By the way, we Had An Amazing Sunday at Rosie McCann!!!

Yelp
Great DJ if you like a variety of music. He played oldies, rap, hip hop, r & b, corridos, and other Spanish music. We had a watermelon vodka drink that came in a capri sun looking pouch with a light. It was a dangerous drink on how good it was. We definitely danced the night away at this place. The bathroom has only one working stall out of two. There was water all over the floor which was not fun for the girls with open toe shoes. This place was very crowded with more men than woman ratio so that kinda sucked if your in a female only group. The whole night we had preying eyes on us or random men dancing behind us. Overall it was a fun bar with good drinks.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Food and ambience is great. Service is fast and courteous. The food is pub fare but done really well. Perfectly cooked items at reasonable prices. We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Marty Z.

Yelp
The food and service, no complaints, but the prices are too high. $12. for an Aperol Spritz is excessive. I'm a local, not a tourist, we won't come back due to the high prices.
google avatar

Elizabeth I.

Yelp
I fame here for their brunch . I got their build your own burger . Cheddar cheese, mayo, A thousand island dressing , grilled onion, sauted mushroom on toasted bun and french fries. All was very good. Plus a diet coke.. The service is very good here
google avatar

Julio R.

Yelp
I have been coming here for the last several months. Manny is the new bar manager he has added a new cocktail selection that is unique and makes you feel like you are getting an experience that is catered to you. He has hired bar staff who shares his vision. Definitely pleased!

Joanne L.

Yelp
Rosie McCanns Irish Pub & Restaurant in Santa Cruz is one of my favorite places to eat. This is their blackened chicken it is my favorite meal to eat in all of Santa Cruz!!!! I have to admit I haven't eaten anything else there since I love this so much. I went 3 times this week, lol I don't know why, but this place isn't that busy. It might be because it is kinda hidden, but I love it!! I went on a Friday night and it was a lot busier than during the week, but still, I was able to get seated immediately.
google avatar

pauline t.

Yelp
Was a good place to catch the Super Bowl! Easy enough, and fast enough service as well!

Sil S.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere would definitely recommend there mash potatoes!! The service is terrific as well!
google avatar

Scott A.

Yelp
The bartender was not very attentive. She was focused on chatting with her friends. I ordered a happy hour menu item and was charged full price. By the taste of the food, you could tell that it has been a while since the fryer oil has been changed. Don't go out of your way.
google avatar

Amelia M.

Yelp
Rosie McCann's is our favorite place for brunch downtown! We can always get seated immediately, the decor is charming, people working here are warm & welcoming, and the food and drinks are delicious. We both were very pleased with our $12 pints of guava mimosas and corned beef hash with breakfast potatoes. The hash is tasty and lean, with tons of flavor but no noticeable chunks of fat. I was served enough for two large meals. We were welcomed to linger and enjoy ourselves, as we always do when we come here for breakfast!
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Picture this... The Rugby World Cup 2023 is on, Ireland is playing... But can you watch it at this Irish pub? Of course not. An Irish pub that doesn't play one of the most important sporting events in Ireland on TV. Don't waste your time with this place, it's not an Irish pub. It's just a shitty pub.

bob r.

Yelp
The food and service were great. The clam chowder was delicious as was the shepherds pie. The DJ needed to work on his speakers since they were blasting loudly in an empty room, but we didn't stay for the club portion of their location.
google avatar

D W.

Yelp
First, I've walked by this downtown, Santa Cruz restaurant many many times, but have never dined there. The restaurant is much bigger than I thought. We got a table immediately because the restaurant was not full. We ordered, but it took a little while for the food to come, but it was fine. The sandwiches were typical pub food nothing special.

Jennifer R.

Yelp
The food was delicious but what made me want to write this review was the service. We went to other restaurants in the area and were disappointed that we didn't get such good service. We stopped at this place and it really brought up our spirits! Wes was our server and he was very genuine and kind, definitely made us feel at home and welcome. The environment was awesome and inviting/homey. We will definitely be back(this is our 3rd time here and we have loved it every time!) Ask about the homemade syrups they add into the drinks, in the spirit of Halloween, they are to die for!
google avatar

Marty S.

Yelp
Great menu for Brunch, plus a couple different Irish coffees to choose from and I had one with Bailey's and Jamison's. Great selection of Benedicts and I had the corned beef Benedict with country potatoes and it was delicious with house made corned beef (not from a can). My wife had a Greek scramble that she also loved! Faith provided excellent friendly service and we came back for a couple drinks from the bar. Aaron behind the bar is great and this is the place to be. They are the ONLY bar in town that serves Guinness with nitro. (The correct way to pour a Guinness). Awesome downtown location. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Paul T.

Yelp
Good Irish pub, with a good and friendly service, and specific ethnic food! Had dinner here tonight , waitress was very pleasant and polite. Had the Bangers and Mash, which at $18 was right on the money. Loved the Irish sausages served with garlic mashed potatoes & Guinness gravy, mixed vegetables & a side of spicy mustard. And tried a bread pudding ($10) which sweetened my dinner. All while enjoying a cold and refreshing Irish lager
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
We came in late to the city and this was the Only place to get Clam Chowder in Santa Cruz after 9pm. The food was very delicious, I loved the clam chowder my burger was pretty good. The waiter seemed like he was having a rough night since he was alone at the bar and taking orders. However everything was okay. I'm not sure if this would be my first choice but I would recommend if you would like something to eat late at night. Location is good, not too far from board walk.

Anja K.

Yelp
Ein toller Abend in authentischer irischer Atmosphäre, sehr leckerem Essen und verhältnismäßig günstigen Getränken. Die Kellnerin Michelle war wahnsinnig freundlich und zuvorkommend!
google avatar

Nilda G.

Yelp
This place is awesome best clam chowder ever. Very creamy n lots of chowder n crab cake to die for. We diffidently will come again
google avatar

Anthony W.

Yelp
I love this place. But most of all I love their Clam Chowder! Me and my friends would come to Santa Cruz every year for the Clam Chowder festival but lately each year it just feels like it gets busier and busier with no desire to make it more organized. Since we found a favorite business that we like for Clam Chowder, we thought it would be cool to visit and get a full bowl rather than a cup. When I went recently it tasted just as good as I remembered at the boardwalk and easily scarfed down a bowl. Prices are reasonable. Service is really nice. Highly recommend checking out this pub if you are in Santa Cruz!

Alex H.

Yelp
the lucky lemonade is SO good. please keep in mind this is a bar in the night, so it definitely gives dive bar vibes. the fries are amazing and the staff is really nice.
google avatar

Mike V.

Yelp
We had dinner there for burger week last Saturday, burgers were good and fries too.. The waiter was new & nervous, couldn't get mad at the guy for forgetting my drink and not bring the correct fries I ordered.. It was a busy night there, but he did a good job! We'll definitely be back for the good food, drinks and ambiance.. Thank you

DeAnna G.

Yelp
Outstanding service by our waitress. She was so kind, helpful, and checked on us often. We ordered the baked brie, apple, and roasted garlic appetizer. It was delicious! We ordered the clam chowder that was thick and creamy. Excellent! We also ordered the Irish Nachos and the avacado was delicious, everything cheesy and good. My son had the shepherd's pie and he really liked his. Fun atmosphere and great people!

Jennifer D.

Yelp
This isn't an Irish pub, this is just a restaurant/ bar call it what it is ppl what a major disappointment

Matt S.

Yelp
It was our first visit to Santa Cruz and we arrived late afternoon on Monday. It was my birthday and we went here for happy hour to watch Monday Night Football. We had a couple cocktails which were very good and strong for happy hour drinks. My wife ordered the wings and I ordered Shepherd's Pie which was very good. Danna, our bartender notified us that they only had 4 wings left and if we still wanted them, she would deduct half from our bill and we said okay. She brought the wings out and a couple were very small; she said she would give them to us because she felt bad about charging for such a small portion. She then brought me another cocktail, compliments of her, when she found out it was my birthday. It was great to get exemplary customer service which is VERY rare these days. Thank you Danna! Matt & Gina
google avatar

Jerome L.

Yelp
Horrible service! bartender wouldn't break a $1.00 bill for me to add more time to the meter. So we finished our beer after he finally got around to pouring it and left. They were also out of bangers and mash. Bad overall vibe. Tiny little punk bartender would never go back again!

Tory B.

Yelp
Weird vibes. Tacky tacky tacky. As an Irish, I take offense for the horrendous food. My friend with an out of state id was turned away by the rude bouncer. Overall, I would skip this place... much better food in the city. Don't waste your money
