Owners of The Rabbit Hole Buy Longtime Normal Heights Pub - Eater San Diego

"Rosie O’Grady’s, established in 1983, is considered one of San Diego’s classic dives. The corner pub on Adams Avenue is well-loved for its all-you-can-eat $12 Mexican-Style Sunday brunch, trivia contests, and karaoke nights. During football season, it’s often standing room only. Social Syndicate plans to preserve it as the same Chicago-style bar, with live music booked by music director Jason Rammelsberg." - Keri Bridgwater

My favorite neighborhood bar I have ever been to! Great vibes! Live music is always killer and Jason the bartender makes you feel like family. A trip to San Diego is never complete without a stop in for a cold highlife and a good time!

Been coming here since 2021, love the staff and the people that come in. The one neighbor upstairs sucks tho and deserves a wedgie; constantly crying and complaining about anything that happens at the bars/restaurants in that neighborhood. It’s like moving to lower manhattan and complaining that there’s too many skyscrapers or purposely moving next to an airport and complaining that they planes flying over you is too loud. But nonetheless, it’s a great bar for both regulars and newcomers. Decently priced drinks and pretty good food.

Google
Great chill little place. Food was good and staff was friendly. I went during the weekday to catch a padres game.

DV N

Google
Great prices and vibes. Some new hipsters neighbors had them closed due to noise complaints (even as the bar had been open for decades in the same location).

Google
The service here on a Friday night was terrible. One of the bartenders was high or drunk or both and kept taking orders and not following through. I gave it 3 stars because, as a native Chicagoan, the Chicago dog was shockingly close to a genuine Chicago dog. If you are a midwesterner missing your fav hot dog, this is a great option!

Google
This is a a great place to grab a drink and be entertained by live bands or DJ on some nights. Always smiles and loud laughter all around. It is a mixed crowd of locals, regulars and sporty people. The drinks are priced at a typical bar price. The energy and ambience is eclectic and electric. You can always spark up a conversation as everyone is welcoming and friendly. The crew is awesome and attentive and jive well with each other and customers. I guess you can say I'm a fan of this place and feel like it's my home bar kinda like the show "Cheers" only more hipster.

Google
Great vibes, awesome local slot. Bartenders are friendly, crowds are fun. Cheap drinks.

Google
I absolutely love this place. Has your “local bar” vibes that makes you go back in time. Great service, great drinks, great prices. I keep coming back!

Yelp
Cheap drinks, lovely service, and the music (classic early 00s r&b vibes when we were there) wasn't so loud that we had to scream, which are the 3 requirements I have for ever going to a dive bar so this place went above & beyond expectations! Allison at the bar was a sweetheart and we had an awesome time. I'm clearly not normally a dive bar kinda person but this place got me. Will definitely swing back next time I'm in NP/normal.

Yelp
I visited Rosie O'Grady's last night, but it's a spot I've been to multiple times before. It's your typical dive bar--nothing fancy, just a straightforward, no-frills atmosphere. If you're looking for craft cocktails, this isn't the place, but if you want a beer or a simple drink like a vodka soda, it's perfect. I've enjoyed every visit, and it's a great spot to kick back and relax without any pretense. If you're in the mood for something casual and laid-back, Rosie O'Grady's is definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
I don't care much for this bar! I had a very bad experience before last. One of the bartenders didn't know how to make my drink. I asked for something else. It still wasn't done right. By the third time to my face the bartender says ",I can just give you your money back?. I was frusterated that a bartender could not make a Rum and cranberry correctly. Or a Gin rickey. Worst made drinks I've ever had by a bartender. And the attitude didn't help. If you dont know how to make a drink then give me someone who does! Part of being a bartender is being able to adapt to situations. You also want to get tipped well right? Well Not today! At most I will come just to hang with my friend. And order a whiskey. No mixed drinks, waste of my time and money. Especially if I drink the same thing all the time I know what it should taste like.

Yelp
My friend had a friend performing, so I decided to check this spot out. Known for all fine Irish things, interestingly enough I didn't order anything Irish but here was my experience. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking, the North Park area can get rough so good luck! Seating: Inside seating is generally great for small groups (bar seating and tables of two and four) Vibes: North Park is a very popping place from the bars, events, and music. The place itself is your usual bar that's relatively well-lit. It's in a good location to see cars and people pass by. Great to chill out to watch a game, enjoy a live performance, or catch up with friends. DRINKS: Jazz Man (Recommend) A nice mix of cutwater Gin, Campari, triple sec & lemon juice. Something strong with pleasant citrus kicks. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Solid. Quick and friendly TL; DR OVERALL: 4 Stars. Great! I had a good experience here. Great menu, good drinks, and pleasant vibes. Nothing too rowdy. The band, Joey and The Mentals were fun to watch and listen to. North Park is known for their brewery spots so if you plan to barhop, add this to your list! TIPS: * Check their website and social media for updated events awesome!

Yelp
This is the epitome of a classic dive bar! They offer the classic cocktails and the bartenders are pretty knowledgeable of drinks. Such a fun vibe!

Yelp
It you want terrible or subpar service and drinks this is the place to go would not recommend needs a makeover entirely

Yelp
Rosie's is a hoot! Great vibe here and a good beer selection. One of the owners, Britt, was tending bar and she's the best! So much fun. She made us feel like one of the family :) Will definitely be coming back soon!

Yelp
Josh Is the BEST bartender ever! So kind, humble, friendly & the nicest one I've met in a while! Thank you for being You!!!
google avatar

Nolan S.

Yelp
Great spot for drinks and they sometimes have live music on weekends! They have quite a few taps of craft beers on draft. The bartenders are chill and not assholes so that's a win! Check it out and support a local business!

Yelp
Great spot but we went for happy hour per their website and they told us they didn't have one

Yelp
Looking for a good time? Well, unless you are a Bears or Blackhawks fan this season (sorry, couldn't resist!), you'll probably find it here at the new and improved Rosie O'Grady's. Oh, I guess I should have included vegans, too, because as far as I can tell, they serve no vegan food here. You'll have to go to BLAH, instead. Decent beer selection, though. I got a full-bodied stout. I also got a couple of Three Olives martinis that were featured courtesy of the Sinatra cover band that plays here monthly. I can't suggest checking out their website for the complete music schedule because websites don't seem to be high on Rosie's priority list. Because this is a Normal Heights bar, the patrons are pretty cool. For God's sake, don't wear Packers, Vikings, Blues, or Red Wings gear here. This is a Chicago sports bar. Have pity. Karaoke every Wednesday.

Yelp
Came here for St. Patties day with a group and had a great time! Cheap whiskey sours and and friendly bartenders. Curious to try it on a normal night!

Yelp
We were on a waiting list to grab brunch somewhere so we went on a walk while we waited. It was a Monday before noon and every bar on the street was closed or not opened yet except for Rosie's! I used to come to Rosie's for trivia night back in the day so I was excited to be reminded of it's charm. We each grabbed a drink from the super friendly bartender and posted up. My partner commented that was Rosie's was a perfect "dive" bar and I have to agree. I'm glad to see Rosie's still got it. I will be back to visit again.

Jen H.

Yelp
Great way to spend St. Paddy's Day! The bartenders were friendly and attentive. We were able to score a seat at the bar...good times! The place was packed but they maintained a positive, hardworking attitude the whole time! Thanks Guys (and Gal)!

Yelp
Terrible bar. Only worth going to if the bartenders know you. Came in tonight and only got a second beer because an employee who was off the clock ordered it for us. Useless barbacks. Only good employee is Tommy the bartender. North park locals, also industry, come at least 4 times a month, never coming back
google avatar

Yelp
Chill dive bar in Normal Heights! Bartenders are super awesome & attentive. Drinks are cheap & strong. Definitely a place to add on your list of you are bar hopping in the area!

Yelp
This spot is the San Diego secret that needs to be unleashed! I've been coming here for years, and always felt welcomed and part of the fam. Business changed hands, COVID hit, and they had things that shut them down for a bit. But, the underdog rose to the challenge and reopened even better than before. Jason, Michael, Big John, and all of the crew for that matter, are awesome and amazingly customer forward. Okay, now let me tell you about the new menu.. we can't stop coming back. It's a habit I won't quit to be honest. The Chicago dog: UNREAL. Be transported back to the windy city with the nostalgia of sport peppers, crisp pickle, sliced tomato halves sprinkled w/celery salt, the poppyseed bun of your dreams, and the bright green relish to top it off. My husband ate it before I could take the picture. Today I enjoyed the chopped cheese, and it was exactly what this snack addict needed. The sesame bun, the mix of meats, the pepper medley, dill mayoOOOoooOOoo, the cheeeeeeese..... They have such great integrity of their preparation, and it shows. Delicious! Do yourself the favor, and run over for the best tastes of San Diego. Chicago must be proud

Yelp
Last night, I was a victim of assault at this location and had to report the incident to the police. Please be cautious of the aggressive bald security personnel. Additionally, some of my friends were vaping inside, which was inappropriate, but it is not acceptable for them to physically assault someone who was peacefully leaving without causing any disruptions. They even punched a woman in the head. I am speechless and shocked that they believe their actions are permissible. This behavior is utterly disrespectful. I will be sharing the videos of the incident soon. Getting lawyers involved

Yelp
Went here Sunday with my wife and a friend. The man who worked there. Bald, had a beard and was trying to look and act like Edward Norton from American history X. He was very off putting, unfriendly and rude for no reason, maybe he was trying to live up to Edwards Norton's character because I'm in an interracial relation ship or maybe because he just lives a miserable life, I have no idea. On the other spectrum of hospitality you have the bar tender, who was very friendly, nice and an all around cool guy. He was slammed but didn't get any help from the angry bald man. I would be back there based on the bartender but will never step foot there again because of Mr breaking bad, he was a total asshole.

Yelp
Wow! Kitchen is open again with an Chicago inspired menu. We had the chopped cheese. Excellent! I recommend you stop in and grab a bite!

Yelp
Went here a few months ago with my wife and my good friend. We were all carded by the bouncer, as I would expect, good job. However, the bouncer, white male, tattoos about 6'00...no customer service what so bit. No warm welcome, just mad dogged me and my friend and his greeting was, "I.D's!" That's horrible. We get inside, and take seats at the end of the bar, closest to the main entrance. I ordered me and my friend Woodford whiskey sours. The drinks weren't too bad, and we got them in an adequate time. One of the bar stools we were sitting on was not level and was wobbly. So we switched it out, thinking it wouldn't be a big deal. Well, apparently the bouncer didn't like the idea very much. He rudely came over, without saying excuse me, grabs the wobbly bar stool, and moves it to a near by area. By the way, he slams the bar stool down, loudly , in a bothered manner. He then continues to loudly arrange the other nearby bar stools to show how bothered he was. I'm not sure why he acted in this manner, but he sure made us feel uncomfortable and definitely unwelcome. I used to come here all the time back when I lived in Daygo, cause of the great atmosphere however, after this experience I don't think we will ever come back.

Craig D.

Yelp
Wow...it's going downhill. Still a pretty good place to drink, and I eventually got over the fact that it's no longer a "Chicago bar," but the kitchen situation is horrible. While the bar staff is still great, the ones working the kitchen, (which is now a separate entity) are completely lacking in any customer service or common courtesy. The food is good, but not worth the grief. I've now given them three chances, and each time was treated worse and worse.

Yelp
We had a terrible and unfortunate experience here during Taste of Adam's Avenue. The bouncer was requiring me to leave my expensive water bottle outside the establishment to either be stolen or spiked so I asked him what was the offering for the event. He refused to tell me. I hope the rest of the staff isn't as arrogant and rude as him. Needless to say, we skipped Rosie's and urge you to do the same.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
I would give this place zero stars if I could. As soon as myself and my group of friends entered the bar I just knew..... we where carded by a rude bouncer - yet no one else that came in before or after us was . We sat at a table in the corner and we where asked to move because some one else was sitting there .(mind you no one was there upon arrival or when we left). I left the group to go the the bathroom and experienced a very rude scary stare from the bouncer. When I came back it was apparent that they did not want to serve us . My friends and I (all brown and black) kept trying to grab the attention of the bartenders . It did not work, we where in there about 10 min and unable to order (mind you it was not busy) This happened May 28th which is my boyfriend birthday and it sucks that he sat at the bar for 10 min to be disregarded (last time I checked all money is green) . . .

Yelp
I want whoever is reading this to know that I'm writing this from my bed freshly showered because my night was done as soon as I made my way around here. This place smells like ass, old spice, and baby powder. Do what you will with this information.

Yelp
Great Chicago neighborhood bar with delicious bar food, great price drinks, with a neighborhood feel. If you're in Normal Heights stop in for a drink, and if you're feeling very adventurous order a shot of Malört

Yelp
Sunday 1-28-24 I had one of worst experiences ever during a chill night out. A few coworkers and I were out for a few drinks - We ended up at Rosie's to end the night. One of my co workers vaped inside and she was asked not to. She complied. Unfortunately, someone else in our group also vaped inside. This is when things got violent towards our group. The male bouncer or bartender ( not sure his roll there ) came up to us and used his large body to intimidate us. He got in my face a yelled as loud as he could for us to get out. I was taken back by the aggressions but knew we were broke the rules and the asking us to leave was fair. We all got up peacefully and continued to walk out of the door. As we walked out side one of my coworkers was kicked from behind and dropped to the ground. Hitting his head and breaking his phone. I was also hit in the back of the head from behind during our exit. Causing an immediate headache. I immediately called 911 as this was clear unwarranted assault by this employee of Rosie's - As SD PD was not able to get to us in a timely manner, I was given a police report number and meet with them this week to give my statement and formally press charges to the aggressor. I'm sincerely traumatized by the evening as it was managed horribly. Please stay away from Rosies until the drug addicts that work there are removed. This guy was completely coke'd out of his mind - hence the aggression, I guess.
google avatar

Jonathan B.

Yelp
My favorite place to hangout in the neighborhood! Everyone of the bartenders is friendly as hell, delicious food for reasonable prices! Best spot to watch sports in SD!

Yelp
My parents (65 and 70 years old) came here last night to grab a quick drink. Upon walking in, an employee shouted across the bar at them that they needed to show their IDs despite the fact that they were very clearly not under 21. When my dad went to show him his ID, the employee demanded that he take it completely out of his wallet to be seen and did so very rudely. My father is 70 years old. Because of his poor treatment of them, my mom told my dad they needed to leave because they did not deserve to be yelled out by an employee at a bar. As they walked out, the employee then came outside and shouted at them, "I GUESS YOU DON'T HAVE YOUR IDs THEN." This service and treatment are rude and inappropriate, and it is absolutely infuriating that any employee anywhere would treat my parents or anyone else this way. Our family will never return to this business and will tell everyone we know that this is not a place to go if you want to be treated with dignity and respect.
google avatar

Cortney K.

Yelp
A solid dive with a full bar, digital juke box, and A/C. Also, contrary to what is posted on this page, Rosie's is 100% dog friendly! So feel free to bring your pup!
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
If you miss Chicago as much as I do you got yourself a Chicago themed dive bar in the neighborhood
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
This place is my go to neighborhood bar . We love thursdays when they have this awesome dude spinning vinyls . Their burgers and wings are sooooo good especially the lemon pepper
google avatar

Taura G.

Yelp
Great time. We stopped in here to enjoy a couple of draft beers (Lattitude 33 Blood Orange) and watch my FAVE NASCAR Daytona 500 Race! #48 Jimmie Johnson is my favorite driver. The mood is chill and the bar regulars always acknowledge new faces. Bartender was cool to do $4 drafts at 3pm, before HH kicked in. Women's Restroom is always clean when we go...love that.
google avatar

Janet M.

Yelp
Great selection of tap beers but no Heineken 00 which has is what my husband drinks as it's virtually zero alcohol. Good ambiance and cold Bud which adds up to a fun place!

Dan L.

Yelp
Stopped in today for darts with my wife. Great vibe. Music playlist was fantastic. Met the owner John who was very welcoming and friendly. Great hang out spot!
google avatar

Brianna L.

Yelp
I used to like coming here until the aggressive bald bouncer/bartender ruined a good thing! A large group of us went to support our friends and local musicians 'Whiskey & Burlap'. Their singer who is a consummate professional at every gig she plays, tripped over equipment and cords in the tight little band space, which led to the bar cutting her off at 8:30pm before they even started playing, accusing her of being intoxicated which she was NOT! They then refused to sell wine to anyone in the bar for fear they would give it to her. Long story short, the band stopped playing early, our entire group left, taking with us nearly all occupants of the bar and our desire to spend money at a local establishment! We all went to Ould Sod where we were welcomed with opens arms, an open bar and loud support for an a cappella performance by all the band members. To top it all off, Rosie's fraudulently charged one of our friends $50 for what should have been the bands gratis bar tab!! We will never go back and neither should anyone else!!!

Mary R.

Yelp
The vibe can be fun but two times now the aggressive bouncer was unnecessarily abrupt and rude. The woman (Illy) behind the bar was kind and hard working, but it could not make up for the awkward atmosphere created by the bouncer. Lots of friendlier bars close by.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Fun place, went there a few times a few years ago when I lived in that neighborhood. Had a great time each time
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
Newly taken over and just what this fine establishment needed. Rosie's is maybe the best "Dive" in University Heights and makes me all warm in the loins. I typically always come here when I'm the hood but can almost never remember leaving. So that's a little anecdote about how your visit will go. The food is beyond good and the bartenders aim to please. If you're in the hood, stop in and tell yourself 7x where you parked cause you won't be driving it home.
google avatar

Ileiana T.

Yelp
I really like the remodel. I have been coming here for years and my parents came here when I was a kid. I am happy it's still here and I don't mind that it was changed. My boyfriend and I came here to have dinner no drinks. The food was great the burger was delicious. He got a chicken sandwich and it was really good but we both agreed the burger was the best. We also got garlic fries which were also good but I would have loved more garlic. Anyway we will be back!
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Great divey spot to relax and drink a cool, tall Budweiser. Staff is very friendly. Steph the bartender is witty, with the speed of Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder. One of the best spots around.

Lee C.

Yelp
Lots of great memories at Rosies in the 90's. Returned to the city for work and went by to have a burger and beers. Rosie's was always there for you like a second home but it has closed and will never return. Thank you Rosies for all the good times!
google avatar

Erin O.

Yelp
Solid place to stop and grab a drink and snack. Music was crazy loud and it took a while to flag down a bartender, but it's definitely a lively place to hang with friends!
google avatar

Josh B.

Yelp
It is a great new vibe to the classic Rosie's, great food and great atmosphere!! Big John is great and has not changed to much other than cosmetics.

Annabelle H.

Yelp
Went to watch the Bears game last Thursday, new owners as of a month or so ago, other than missing the memorabilia (they're in the process) it was great! Clean and the vibe was amazing. The owner was very personable and treated us to beers and authentic Chicago Dogs! Loved it. Will keep going there and bringing friends. Highly recommend it. Da Bears!
