I went with my son Wednesday night. Unfortunately it was raining heavily so we were unable to sit outside on the rooftop but inside was not a disappointment. The hotel itself is simply beautiful on the inside. Decorated with a taste that is reminiscent of a bygone era, but with a modern flair. I can imagine many a splendid event held here!
The inside bar on the roof is subtly decorated with references to WWII era, giving homage to Rosie the Riveter and all the women who she represented. The ceiling fan blades were airplane propellors. The lighting over the bar was made out of an airplane wing. The hanging lights were in small individual cages and there were gears on the walls. The ceiling was made of corrugated metal. The background din was just loud enough to hear music but soft enough to have a normal conversation. The only downside I found was the tables were created in a way that on two sides, your knees touched the base when you sat down. It wasn't a problem for just the two of us because we switched seats. But if you had a party of more than two, it might be uncomfortable for some in the party.
The service from start to finish was fantastic. Everyone was helpful, friendly and you could tell the small crew worked together to make sure the entire room was served and happy.
My son ordered the Skylar. A pretty blue drink that was very tasty. I ordered Moscato. The cocktail drink menu was small but seemed to offer something for everyone.
I was disappointed the small plate of Shrimp was not ready yet so we couldn't try it. It is served with potatoes, corn, and sausage and sounded delicious.
For starters we ordered the candied bacon wrapped brussel sprouts, crab beignets and riveter fries. We both totally loves the brussel sprouts! Great combination of flavors. The crab beignets were a little boring. Thin outer shell wasn't overpowering so that was a plus but the inside lacked flavor, in my opinion. My son was neutral about it. Because it is a fried dish, you get the greasy feeling on your fingers. The riveter fries were an interesting combination. Fries topped with a gravy of some type, short rib and cheese curds. The rib was tender and so good. The gravy made the fries soggy. My son thought the cheese curds could have been a little fresher but it wasn't a deal breaker for him. I think if you order just the fries, or aren't trying to eat three dishes at the same time, we might have gotten through the fries before they became soggy. I am willing to test this theory out by going back again.
For shareables we ordered the duck confit grilled cheese and the jerk marinated chicken taco. The duck confit was an upscale cheese sandwich with delicious flavor pairings. He got a piece of duck that was impossible to eat because it was too dry. He called it the least underwhelming dish he has tried. He said the flavor was good but he felt the duck should either be cooked less or "hold" better (holding a dish before serving). The half of the sandwich I tried was not disappointing and I finished my half. I agree the flavors were on point. I enjoyed the fact that it is made on a croissant. The tacos were heavenly! It is layered with cold red onion, warm jerk chicken, then topped with cold tomatoes, dragon fruit, and sour cream. The coolness of the layers paired well with the heat (spice) of the chicken. I don't handle spicy food well but was determined (and able) to finish one taco completely before calling it quits. My mouth was on fire but it was worth it. My son on the other hand wasn't bothered at all and had the nerve to claim it was't spicy. HAH!
We ended the meal with beignets and bread pudding. The beignets were light and airy. The chocolate sauce tasted like hershey syrup. Still delicious but little details like that make the difference between good and great. The bread pudding was nice. I love bread pudding so I can judge harshly. For me to say it is nice means it passed muster in my eyes. It had an interestingly shaped vanilla ice cream scoop on top. It was hard and didn't melt easily making me wonder if it was pre-made scoops.
The final thought is this is a great place to come for drinks, the ambience, and socializing with friends and you happen to order food as an accompaniment. This is a step above bar food. I would definitely return.
