24 Hours of the Best Eating and Drinking in Downtown Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Rossi’s is one of downtown’s last true dive bars and among the most unique places in the city: beer bottles are stored in coolers in the back with an impressive selection of local beer you can grab and pay for at the bar, and the crowd is eclectic — concertgoers from the House of Blues, Loop business folks, and awkward tourists." - Ashok Selvam

We came here for dinner on a Thursday evening. I found the restaurant by doing a Google search for Italian as we drove up New Hampshire. There is plenty of parking and an ice cream shop next door. You enter into the bar area, so just take a left to get to the dining room. We were greeted by the owner (a traditional Italian Nonni) who sat us immediately. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. My boyfriend ordered a beer ($6), then we had a buffalo chicken Cesar salad and the lasagna. I ate every bite! For dessert, my boyfriend had the lava cake and I had an amazing cannoli ($5.50 each). Our entire meal was $59 (including tax)! I haven't seen these prices since the 90s. And we had a nice chat with the owner. I hope we are in the area again. This place was a hidden gem!

Nice American-Italian restaurant in Bristol. Decent variety with flavorful food. Dinner rolls are amazing! Crispy outside, pillowy soft inside. Started with the fried calamari. Super tender with a crisp exterior. For dinner, had the linguine with clams special and wife had the scallops. Both very tasty. Service was simply amazing. Our server, Nadine, was juggling a large table, and two smaller ones, including our two top. She did an amazing job juggling all of us, and keeping us on pace with drinks, appetizers, rolls, and main courses. An elderly woman, I can only assume the owner, was there helping out by cleaning tables, providing food, running service, and generally being very supportive of the wait staff. Everyone working there seemed to work as a team, helping each other out, and covering for each other. Love Rossi’s. Way better than that slightly fancier place up the road that’s part of a local chain. We will be back. By the way, the photo of the calamari shows us after we had dipped into a couple pieces. It was a much neater and cleaner presentation than the photo! The food was so good, we simply tucked in before being able to take appropriate photos.

UPDATED REVIEW: My original review is below. Last night, Sept 7, 2025, I purchased our 51st anniversary dinner from here. We ordered a large pizza with chicken, onion, and broccoli. Also, two shrimp cocktails, then a kid's order of meatballs and zetti. Everything was EXCELLENT. The red sauce with the meatballs might be the best I've ever had. The shrimp were large and cooked to perfection. They were firm, not rubbery. The pizza crust was unbelievable. I'm NOT a relative or friend of the Rossi's. I'm just an ordinary customer like you. I feel this place is superior to Fratello's in Laconia. Original Review: I purchased a pizza for takeout here two nights ago. I've driven by this restaurant no less than 500 times and never visited. What a mistake! The pizza was excellent. It was ready on time. The toppings were abundant. I could see the owners hard at work in the kitchen through the Take Out portal. I guarantee you I'll be back with my wife and friends. Oh, I forgot to tell you about the pizza crust. I'm a crust snob! The crust was perfect. The outer ring was cooked to perfection. It was still nice and doughy, but firm. I haven't had crust like that since Zino's in Cincinnati in the 1980s!

Google
Rossi's has been out favorite Italian restaurant for years. The best pizza in NH and always excellent entrees. A "special menu item" last weekend was "Sausage Caccitore" and it was absolutely delicious - don't miss it if you see it on the specials board!

Google
Worst Dinner Ever! Last night we’re seated at 5:25pm, completely ignored for first 35 minutes. Finally, server takes drink order, we receive water 10 minutes later, drinks follow as does cheesy bread (cheap bread with melted cheese). Then we wait…… another 30 minutes go by and we order, then we wait….. finally meals arrive, not the chicken parm I ordered, but veal, luke warm, mediocre, frozen patty with red watery sauce over pasta, my wife’s meal looked and tasted good she said. Entire meal from seating to leaving, 2 hours!!! TWO HOURS!!! I watched four other tables get seated after us, meals served, meals eaten, bills paid and patrons departing before we got our meals!!!!!! What The BLEEP? Bartender doubles as take-out coordinator, huge take-out establishment backing everything up. Margo the owner wanders around oblivious as to what’s happening. Had better meals and service at McDonald’s, don’t waste your time or money.

Google
Unfortunately we have not been able to try them after seeing such a great rating. We’re from Florida and went to them last year and they were closed. We were told they had gone out of business. I tried again yesterday and a woman answered the phone. I confirmed it was them by location and asked if they were open as it was mid afternoon and her reply was “yes, that’s why she answered the phone”. After driving 4 hours I was not amused. All 4 of us had wonderful meals at the Homestead restaurant on the same street

Google
Went here for dinner with my family while on vacation for Laconia Bike Week, we were quickly sat and served drinks which were delicious! The food was also great, I really enjoyed my pizza and the owner bumbles around talking to the customers like they're family, which makes for a welcoming atmosphere. On the downside, the server could not remember a single thing anybody ordered so she would just hand it to whoever was closest and we would have to pass the hot plate around the table, and my friend waited like 20 minutes for a coke while another member ordered a beer after the coke had been ordered and it came within 3 minutes. Also the owner would not stop voicing her opinion on our life choices and how we ride motorcycles. Telling some of us that were too young and its irresponsible, and others that we should care more about our lives. We were all mid meal while this was happening so it was very uncomfortable. Like I said though, the food was very very good and so were the martinis!

Google
Stopped here first time and glad we did. Got a pepper and onion pizza , and the chicken marsala both were outstanding. Our server Nadine was great , very nice and personable. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
This is an old school pizza place that does a lot of take out. There's a small bar usually full of locals and a dining room full of families and tourists. Consistently the BEST pizza in the area. I've had some good pizza around but it's hit or miss Rossi's is spot on. If you order a salad get the homemade dressing.

Yelp
Good food and service.. not fancy.. Large servings!! Good access. Have stopped many times over the years!!

Dave W.

Yelp
Second time here. Pizza was great , chicken soup was flavorful but mostly broth. Server noted that and took it off bill. Our server was terrific and helped us out. Older woman ( maybe owner) was there helping clear tables. Very reasonable and great salads!

Olive M.

Yelp
I want to start off by saying our waitress was fantastic, I should've asked for her name! I sat in the comfiest restaurant wooden chair of my life. Very cozy inside. Now onto the food. Chicken parm was good, but average. Pizza was well seasoned and very cheesy, but average. It's a bit expensive for what it is, but I'm still glad we went.

Yelp
I have been coming here since I was a kid. It's always the same great family run establishment. Dependable delicious food, friendly staff, and reasonable prices.

Matthew C.

Yelp
Been driving past this place for like 20 years stopped in because my son had a baseball game for the first time and we were not disappointed!! Great service and the Sicilian pepperoni pizza was really good ,The buffalo tenders were homemade and delicious and my wife loves her spinach and feta pizza!! definitely recommend this place!!

Connor D.

Yelp
Margo hosted a wonderful private lunch for my team. We were treated to pizza, salad, mozzarella sticks, and a white sauce pasta. It was delicious. The restaurant has a great ambiance and the service was superb. I would highly recommend to anyone in the area whether you live nearby or are visiting from out of town.

Yelp
First time ever! Pleasantly surprised by food. Service was excellent with Sarah. Portions for price was good. Salad was 4 dollars and filled plate. Nice variety of greens and tomatoes. Veggie pizza not greasy, crust crisp and scampi was delicious. Drinks priced fairly. Will we return, absolutely!

Yelp
I ordered the chicken parm sub. To put it nicely: it was overpriced and absolutely disgusting. 16$, smooshed into a togo container with very little care. The chicken was clearly FROZEN FROM A BAG, ( YES, CHICKEN FINGERS FROM A BAG!!!! ) only 3 soggy and inedible tenders at that. About a tablespoon worth of cheese and mediocre sauce. I took one bite and gagged immediately. So after all that and tipping on top of it, buyers remorse is an understatement. To call themselves an Italian restaurant serving frozen chicken and truly pathetic. Pack it in...

Yelp
The whole family loves Rossi's. The pizza is terrific, but there are lots of entrees and sandwiches on the menu. We usually get a salad with our pizza, and those are very nice, especially the Greek Salad. Staff is delightful. The inside of the restaurant is cozy and clean, although we have not seen the inside in a long time due to covid :(

Yelp
Rossi's Ristorante Italiano is located right off I-93 Exit 23 in New Hampton. This casual family restaurant and lounge is open for dinner beginning at 4:30PM (Wed-Sun Only-Winter Hrs). The dining area has dim lighting (candlelight at each table), brick tile floors, finished wood walls, and framed pictures fairly old school. The menu is straight forward and offers Italian American fare (not extensive as the other Italian places further south) at moderate prices. Offerings include pasta dishes, parmigianas, seafood, pizza, salads, and desserts. Beer and wine list available. Specials are offered including $4.99 Spaghetti & Meatballs on Wednesdays. See the menu at http://www.rossisnh.com Okay onto the review! I decided to stop at Rossi's for dinner on the way back south. I arrived here at 4:30PM on the nose. After I was seated, I could hear the waitress going over some specials (comes with choice of pasta or potato and a side salad-regular dinners do not include salad) with the next table including Sausage & Broccoli Ravioli, Baked Sole, and Chicken Francesca. The latter was $17.99 plus tax and sounded pretty good and I ordered it immediately. I was brought out some warm crusty rolls and the basic side salad (iceberg mix) with house Italian dressing. My entree was brought out by the owner. The Chicken Francesca was a good sized breaded chicken breast in a lemon & mushroom sauce, which was pretty good. Unfortunately, the very small side of spaghetti and green beans were way overcooked and mushy. The side of homemade meat sauce was lukewarm, but tasty. As I was finishing up dinner, the dining room began to smell like smoke and I had trouble breathing normally without coughing. The vent fan accidently blew smoke into the restaurant instead of outside. I knew it was about time to end the meal and I passed on dessert. The service was good and timely on this visit. Other than the good Chicken Francesca itself, the rest of the food was not great and decent at best. I made it outside quickly and I COULD BREATHE again! Literally smoked out of dinner.

Yelp
I hesitated to write a critical review of Rossi's because the food is usually very good. We've dined here for years, but it seems to me there's always something wrong. Short staff, limited menu, tonight the chef didn't come in. The icing on the cake though was the watered down coke they knowingly served me tonight. When I told them, they already knew the machine was out of syrup. They also still charged me for it. Restaurant flow and ambiance are pretty terrible. Going from the front door through the bar to the dining room is through a narrow hall. There's no greeter and no where to stand while you wait to be sat. You're generally required to squeeze by your fellow diners just to get in or out. It's an uncomfortably close choke point. This restaurant has good food, but other than take out I can't recommend it.

Yelp
Locals love this spot. I have been about half a dozen times and always sit at the bar, get a meatball sub with toasted bread, a side salad, and a cocktail. I'm tempted by other things on the menu, but the meatball sub is so good that it's become a favorite of mine within a 20-30 minute drive if this place. Bonus points to this place for Sweet and kind employees. The take out window is always busy, reminding me to try takeout when I have family that visits me here. While this may not be a fancy place, you can taste the love in the food. I recommend it for sure!

Robert L.

Yelp
After going here for a number of years, we have decided to not visit this restaurant anymore. The staff is not very friendly. They need to take lessons on customer service. The food flavors are inconsistent from visit to visit. We are dealing with getting our take out orders wrong about 50% of the time. Take out pizzas- we are constantly having to check our pizzas because they are either not cooked thoroughly, not with the right toppings or they even reheated an old pizza and have it to us. All this with no apologies from the staff while the owner stands right there ignoring the issues. This former great place needs a complete overhaul from employees to food to workflow/setup or realize it's time to close the doors or just become a bar.

Yelp
Just moved up here and thought I'd give this place a try so I stopped in for a couple of quick subs tonight $28 in total right into the trash heap. Veal parmigiana and Chicken cutlet both the worst I've ever had and I've had them all over the country. Yes I'm Italian! Subway would of been a better selection and that's not saying much. The bread sucked, the portions were spread on like peanut butter. The sauce was mediocre at best. Just awful. Hadn't tried the pizza yet. If I get the guts for a second punishment I might give that a try. Not keeping my hopes up on that one. When there not much choice in the area the monopoly is what it is.

Lee M.

Yelp
We just left Rossi's Italian Restaurant. The owner, Margo Rossi, made homemade spaghetti tonight with her homemade meat sauce. It was absolutely delicious. It is the only totally authentic Italian cooking to be found in the Lakes Region. My husband ordered Margo's homemade spaghetti and requested garlic and oil instead of the meat sauce. He said it was delicious. We have been coming here for many years and the food has always been great.

Brandon G.

Yelp
tried calling twice tonight and the lady who answers keeps telling me to 'hold' and when I hold for five minutes she decides to hang up on me. not a strange reoccurrence. she did it twice on purpose NOT to take my order. what a piece of crap. never going here again. I really wanted pizza. what a joke. freaking rude.

Carol D.

Yelp
Service was good and the young girl was very friendly. We ordered our food, penna pasta with the fried jalenpo ravioli. It was ok food, nothing special at all, just pasta with sauce on top with a sausage link and that was nice. Expected more flavor! Went to the bathroom and it was very small not ada compliant I am sure. I don't think I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Good food. Good mix between a regular pizza place and a working man's Italian restaurant. What I mean by that is that it's affordable. Friendly wait staff and nice place. Not five star because they don't have steak and cheese.
google avatar

Colleen B.

Yelp
Good food and even better service! They were quite busy however they attempted to keep us in the loop with when we'd get our food. Will be back!

Jed C.

Yelp
Glad they re-opened this week. Need pizza and beer. Always great food. Always a blast when Margo comes our to the bar and " holds court ".

H S.

Yelp
One of the BEST pizzas we've ever eaten! My husband and I both had small pizzas. They were cooked just right and tasty. I had pepperoni, black olives and ricotta and he had mushrooms. We also had garden salads. I would have given a 5 star rating but salads were room temp. Nothing worse than eating a salad that's not cold and crisp. Overall we highly recommend!

John B.

Yelp
Waitress was great I we Ordered scallops and fried clams. They post Fried Clams on their sign figured I had to try go by there frequently. Clams were good not great and had to really search on plate of fries to find them. For $32.00 dollars it was a very small portion. Fortunately I helped with the scallops! Otherwise I would of left hungry‍

Joe A.

Yelp
Unbelievable!! Why did it take us so long to return to this fantastic place. Great food, service and comfort. Like eating at your favorite relatives place.

Linda M.

Yelp
The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of the service. Terrible at the bar and waiting for check at the end of the meal. Service was VERY VERY SLOW! Went to the bar with 3 other people. I had a glass of wine and my husband a beer. Our table was ready and my husband went to settle the bill and waited 5 minutes and was never done. Came to the table and told the waitress and she added to the bill. The food was DELICIOUS!!! 5 Stars for sure Well prepared, nice portion and very tasty. Getting the bill we waited 10 minutes. We paid with a credit card and the others paid cash. We waited an additional 5minutes to process the the card. The waitress explained that the bar was backed up and all billing went through there. Suggestion: check who's at the bar. If it's a older woman, plan on staying for a long while.

Diane M.

Yelp
The most delicious Italian dinner. A restaurant the has a 60's interior and rustic but so clean. Loved it. Pasta is homemade and the meatballs were made fresh. The sauce was so fresh and tasty. I would recommend this as a great restaurant to stop in after a weekend at the lake. Loved the cook who also owns it. She is adorable!!! A must!!!

Winny R.

Yelp
Do not get food from here. The pizza was good a few times about a year ago. Since then everything I've tried has been a mistake. The tomato slices on the pizza were massive and thick. They tasted like chemicals and nobody would eat the pizza. The cheese wasn't melted enough and it was way to thick and oily. The pizza crust doesn't even hold up all the frozen cheese and toppings. The buffalo tenders are rubbery and have no flavor. Do not eat here waist of money go to Pizza Bene.

Scott H.

Yelp
Been twice, both times shoved in the back corner. Food was very SYSCO quality. No thanks
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
We actually ate here three times this weekend. I had chicken parm one night and it was good but the sauce was a little too meaty for me. My dad had the clams and he liked it. We had pizza the next few days and it was so good. I love the sauce on it and that there isn't a lot of cheese on it. The garlic was good on it. The staff is friendly but I do wish that when they got so busy that they would remember to keep going. They seem to be talking to the regulars and not give us our check which took 25 minutes. Another waitress did say sorry but it was a little annoying. I would be back
google avatar

Kiley J.

Yelp
Tried this place after hearing good things. Waitress was horrible. Took a while to get our initial drink order then just down hill from there. Husband said his food was great. Mine was so so. For what we paid I expected a higher level of service. Waitress never came to check if everything was good. Never asked if we needed a refill though our empty glasses were on the table edge for a good 20 minutes and the dining room is tiny...she walked by us several times. Disappointed after all the good things I heard. Hoping the owner will review their staff soon.

Melanie P.

Yelp
I will start off by saying this was a pick up order on a Friday evening. I went to get items in the bar area and the woman there seemed very scattered. Actually using inappropriate language and after some time I got my food. We ordered for a large group. Pizza wings and a Greek salad for myself. Everyone else enjoyed the pizza and wings. Me however about an hour half after eating the Greek salad with grilled chicken I became violently ill. I was so ill vomiting for the next 7 hours that I left our cabin ( we were staying at yogi for the weekend ) and went to the ER to receive iv and meds for food poisoning we had to end our weekend short due to me being so ill and I will never ever eat there again. I'm going to be calling the manager today to discuss.

Kaitlyn M.

Yelp
Cute and cozy little place! The pizza was delicious. The dough was the BEST dough I have ever eaten. Yum!

Lisa W.

Yelp
My husband and I had dinner there last night, Meg our server was great, friendly and helpful. The food was pretty good, atmosphere funky and interesting in a by gone era way. The reason for my review is to plead with the owners not to serve plastic straws in the glasses of water brought to the table. So wasteful and unnecessary. Please, for the sake of our oceans, be more conscientious. Thanks.
google avatar

Rd D.

Yelp
Updating this review down to two stars. Ordered a regular cheese pizza to go and had a beer at the bar. The bar staff was super nice so they get two stars. The pizza was an over cheesed greasy mess. The crust was cooked perfectly so maybe they're just using a lower and dairy product. It really doesn't matter because the whole thing was difficult to eat.
google avatar

T W.

Yelp
I pass this restaurant almost daily and I had heard from people that their pizza is fantastic. So I stopped to get a pizza. I got the Sicilian crust with bacon, ham, green pepper and onions. When I got home, the pizza tasted great...until I tried to bite down onto the bottom of the crust. It was burnt to a black, smoky crisp. Since Sicilian pizza's hard to come by around here, I'm hoping that it was just a simple mistake.
google avatar

Cynthia R.

Yelp
Best pizza in the United States of America. We've been getting pizzas delivered for over a decade now and have never ever been disappointed. Crust is always perfect, sauce is exceptional, and toppings are tasty. With Mom and Pop running the place, our food is always a terrific experience.

Scott P.

Yelp
Compared to our prior visits we were disappointed. The crab cakes aren't what they used to be and the fried fish, though a big serving, was cold. The Italien dish however was excellent and the table next to us had an awesome looking pizza. Perhaps Kevin, their seafood chef, has moved on. So, still great Italien but you might want to pass on the seafood.
google avatar

Gretchen W.

Yelp
Slow service, even though uncrowded. Forgot to make one entree for our group. Nice about it, but there are too msny other good restaurants around to waste 3 hours on a one course dinner here. Sorry.

Ellie I.

Yelp
This is my third visit to Rossi's and I can honestly say the visits are getting progressively worse. The food is okay, not much more than that. I had the lasagna and felt that it had way too much stringy cheese which made it awfully heavy. The lasagna itself came with nothing..just plopped in a small baking dish. My dining companion had spaghetti..not much you can do to that. I think the thing that is really causing my annoyance at the place is that , altho there is a fireplace in the restaurant , we were seated next to a drafty window and it was absolutely freezing in there, so that we ate with our coats on. The larger party behind us also had their coats on during the entire meal. There was a draft from the floor, the window and above us. When I mentioned it to the waitress she just smiled and had uttered a nervous laugh. I know, because Saturday is a busy night, the tables had to be utilized, but I would rather have had the option of whether I wanted to freeze during my meal or not. I can't put my finger on it, but I felt it's really gone downhill since my last visit 14months ago.
google avatar

Jeannie B.

Yelp
Amazing experience here tonight. Food was delicious and service was great, can't wait to come back again! We highly recommend this place for great Italian food.
google avatar

Howie E.

Yelp
A family came in like 10 or 15mins after us and got their dinner before us. Same went for dessert.

J T.

Yelp
Don't let them fool you....this is NOT a family restaurant. We came in for dinner a few weeks ago with several other families. We were all sat in the same room together and had between us about 14 kids all together (ages 4 - 9 mind you). Were they a bit loud? Yes, but the acoustics in that place are a disaster....they have high ceilings and the noise bounced up and into the other 1/2 of the dining room. We did our best to keep the kids quiet, but when you have 14 children together in the same room, they are going to make some noise. The waitstaff were wonderful, but "Mama Rossi" the owner of the restaurant was EXTREMELY RUDE to all of us. She said to the children, "If you don't quiet down, I'm going to send you outside in the rain." I found this to be VERY unprofessional. The food was ok, but we'll never go back there again. If you are going to advertise your restaurant as a family restaurant, then expect CHILDREN to come in and behave as CHILDREN do.....excited little beings that they are!!!

Yelp
Went for dinner and had the worst service after a day on the lake. The food was good but the teenage check didn't have a clue how to waitress. i refilled my water in the bathroom sink because I couldn't wait any longer. My wife's soda and my wine also never came. We had to ask other waitresses and hosts for Ketchup and Tartar sauce. We were there for an hour and a half.

J D.

Yelp
Ordered pizza from here again. Awesome.thin crust ..plenty of cheese..sweet tomato sauce.cooked well done. This pizza is as good as northend of boston or nyc shop.worth the drive from bristol or Laconia or tilton or just passing thru on 93..1 min off exit . Thanks again for great pizza

Amanda O.

Yelp
Worst service I've ever had. Waitress was nowhere to be found, never brought anything we asked for. Had to keep getting up to interrupt another waitress because ours wasn't around. My husband had to go to the bar to request his water refilled. Waitress finally brought the soda I asked for as she brought the bill when we were done and still charged for it. Food was terrible, haddock was soggy. Super disappointed as I had take out pizza from here in the past and was very pleased. First time in our lives we didn't tip a waitress. Felt bad about it but she didn't even deserve to be employed here. Figured no tip was better than a complaint to the owner and might make her realize she should do better.

Yelp
Frankly I was surprised by the other couple of reviews on this page. We have been going to Rossis on Friday nights for almost 10 years now. We have never had a bad meal here. We never had the vent fan malfunction either so I would say that was an isolated incident. As far as other folks getting their food first. Rossis has a pizza business as well as the dinners. They are different cooks and if they are busy on take out orders, pizza can get backed up. They now have a added another new chef and expanding their fried seafood offerings. We are treated like family and Margo is a gracious courteous host to all her customers. Personally I love the pizza and the Liguini with clam sauce (whole baby clams) is one of my favorites. If the special is homemade pasta, highly recommend! Baked stuffed shrimp is outstanding with a scallop and bread crumb stuufing and the lasagna also very good. Like I said- never had a bad meal here.

Dee L.

Yelp
Best pizza around! Unbelievable crust...perfect sauce amazing cheese... We have had every pizza in the area and this is true Italian at its finest!

Laura B.

Yelp
I have been to this restaurant many many times and found it to be excellent. The owners (Margo and sons) are very friendly and take their customers and their food to heart. They have the best Antipasto, Pizza and I cannot forget to mention the Italian wedding soup (escerole and meatballs). It is a must if you are lucky enough to be there when it is available. I have also had their Shrimp Scampi before and found that to also be very tasty. I have a small appetite, so I usually don't order that on a regular basis This is a bit out of the way from where I live, but it is definiteley worth the trip anytime. Love Iit evertime.

Ron T.

Yelp
I love this place. If you're looking for a fancy setting and upscale atmosphere, this isn't the place. This is plain and simple, old-school, casual Italian. The food is incredible, and they continually offer different specials to mix it up. Margo (the owner) makes her own pasta and sauce, pounds and breads the chicken and veal herself, and is constantly around the dining room to make sure everyone is happy. My personal favorites are the Chicken Parm, Veal Parm and Lasagna, but I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered. The new cook is a seafood specialist and it shows...their all you can fried clams are a big hit on Friday nights. The service is great, and the food is a great value.
