Best Hot Chocolates in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"The Pearl District’s Roste Chocolate House has changed the Portland hot chocolate game. The shop processes its own chocolate in-store and serves six variations of hot chocolate. The pure melted chocolate offers a two-ounce concentrated shot of cocoa, while the drinking chocolate mixes in a touch of milk. A classic hot chocolate is available, as well as a Mexican hot chocolate with chile and cinnamon. Find a small menu of pastries and other bites, including brownies, chocolate chunk cookies, and a bacon breakfast sandwich." - Rebecca Roland

The Best Non-Alcoholic Iced Drinks in Portland | Eater Portland

"As one of Portland’s handful of cacao roasters, Roste makes excellent chocolate treats of all shapes and sizes. The shop’s chocolate prowess is clearly reflected in the summer menu, which features everything from iced cacao shell tea to a marzipan mocha. The real star of the summer menu, however, is the chocolate chill, a blend of frozen single-origin chocolate and fudge drizzle. This drink is ideal for those who love semi-sweet chocolate and ice cold smoothies. Pair it with one of the shop’s house-baked pastries for a chocolatey bacchanal." - Seiji Nanbu

Warm Up With Portland’s Go-To Hot Chocolates - Eater Portland

"The Pearl District’s newly opened Roste Chocolate House is changing the Portland hot chocolate game. The shop processes its own chocolate right in the cafe, serving a variety of different drinking chocolates on the spot; the cafe’s chocolates often use beans from places like Vietnam, India, Tanzania or Ecuador. In other words, customers can try multiple single-origin chocolates side-by-side before choosing a base for hot chocolate. Plus, Roste also serves a selection of house-baked chocolate-based pastries that pair well with the hot chocolates. Roste is open for takeout." - Seiji Nanbu

Google
The chocolate is excellent. We definitely love this place...But...they need plain, fresh croissants, tea-style biscuits or some other non-sweet option for food, especially for the drinking chocolate. It helps really enjoy the flavor and not overpower it. Everything we tried was good though on its own: chocolate latte, rocky road brownie, honey marshmallow and the drinking chocolate was rich, smooth and perfectly balanced. We bought ceremonial chocolate for later -highly recommend. The chocolate making area is open-view, which was fun to watch. Beautiful copper accents. Decent seating.

Google
Best drinking chocolate I've had. It was slightly thicker than others, but it made it more like a rich pudding. I enjoyed the cream and sparkle on the side. Agreed that they need some croissants or non-sweet bread/cookies to balance the chocolate to really elevate the experience. Can't wait to come back to try the ceremonial.

A Hot Chocolate Experience Beyond Words From the moment I stepped in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a touch of elegance that set the stage for what was to come. The hot chocolate was nothing short of extraordinary—thick, velvety, and rich with a deep cocoa flavor that lingered delightfully. Each sip felt like a luxurious indulgence, perfectly complemented by the cozy ambiance and the friendly, attentive staff. It’s not just a drink; it’s an experience that stays with you. Truly one of the best hot chocolates I’ve ever had.

Google
Amazing chocolate aroma upon entering. Very chill; proprietor explained so many fun details we asked about. And the flavors? Well, don’t even say the “H” brand in here. This is REAL chocolate.

Google
First time in, and definitely not my last! I might just be there every day 😅 moved to the neighborhood about a month ago and recently decided to take a break from coffee, but I didn't want that to stop me from solidifying my finding a neighborhood cafe to become a regular at! I also don't drink alcohol, so I've been on the hunt for a place to meet up with people at too, that isn't a bar. This is the place 🫠 Today I tried the Haitian sipping chocolate with whipped cream...and it was to die for. Hot chocolate therapy where have you been all my life?

Oh my gawds. If you are a chocolate lover who knows the need (and/or greed) for thick drinking chocolate living in Portland you may have felt a pang of despair when Alma chocolate closed and Cacao closed. The door opened at Roste Chocolate House and the smell of chocolate is so dense in the air we could already taste it. The street level space has tons of natural light, gleaming metallic mixers, and was immaculately clean. The table spacing provides room for mobility device users and enough distance from your neighbors that conversation still feels intimate. It felt upscale and spacious without feeling exclusive or formal. Everything we tasted was incredible. From the drinking chocolate to the mousse heart. There are a selection of single origin chocolate, they offer tastings and bar making events. There are beautiful baked goods and gluten free options as well. The staff were responsive charming and thoughtful. They handled a flurry of folks arriving at the same time with patience and grace. They provided excellent service and communication. It was truly a welcoming haven for a sensory experience that fully reset our moods and experiences of the day. Totally worth a trip across the river. Such a smart spot as an alternative to an exclusively coffee cafe or for an afternoon decadence. What a pleasure to patronize this business. I can’t wait to go back!

Google
Such a special experience! My family did a chocolate tasting at Roste and it honestly felt like we were tasting chocolate for the first time. The flavors were incredible, so rich, complex, and completely different from anything we’d tried before. What really made the experience stand out was the owner. He was so knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does, but also incredibly friendly and down-to-earth. He made the whole thing feel approachable and fun. You can tell he loves what he does and that enthusiasm is contagious . Highly recommend if you’re in Portland and want to try something unique and memorable. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
We finally have drinking chocolate in Portland! Yay! I've been waiting for this for years. The chocolate is delicious and grab a dessert while your at it. I did. They also have gluten free options if that's your thing. Yum.

Yelp
I was downtown craving a sweet treat and I knew there was no better place to go than Roste. As soon as you walk in, the smell is overwhelmingly delicious. Choose from their pastries, drinks, or sample some chocolate about as straight as you can get it. I recommend dining in and leaving plenty of time to savor your chocolate rather than having to shove it down. This is best when savored! Alternately, consider booking a tasting class with chocolatier Michael. It's very informative and well worth your while to learn how everything is made and to contrast chocolate sourced from different regions.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places in Portland and I'm always looking for an excuse to stop by. The vegan chocolate chip cookie is the best. It's a nice space to hang out.
google avatar

Whitney J.

Yelp
Ordered the chocolate chill. It was not very good. I didn't drink it besides tasting it. $8 down the drain. I don't understand why I pay that much and get a subpar drink. I asked what the best chocolate drink was. I don't get how you are a speciality store with serving just ok chocolate drinks. Also it comes with chocolate sauce. It doesn't say so on the menu.

V L.

Yelp
Roste is an absolute gem in the Pearl. We bring all of family and friends here! It's perfect for a morning or midday hot chocolate, coffee, tea, or treat. I really appreciate the vegan options. Make sure to let them know that you're vegan when you're ordering! You can get the hot chocolate drinks with oatmilk. The vegan chocolate chunk cookie is a MUST; absolutely the best chocolate chip cookie in Portland due to the super high quality chocolate.
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to go for hot cocoa in all of Portland because they have micro lots of chocolate offerings from all over the world to have your cocoa, so it's much like other coffee places in Portland, where you can choose the variety of your espresso, you can choose the variety of your chocolate in your cocoa and this makes this experience, particularly special and unusual so you should stop here For a great experience with great service in a fun environment.
google avatar

Yelp
Wish I came here sooner! What a unique spot with some of the best chocolate I've ever had. I got the Hot Chocolate which was thick and luscious but not at all sweet. This with their butter crossiant would have been amazing. However, their Chocolate Orange scone was also to die for. Warm, buttery, and flakey with bits of chocolate and orangy galze. Perfect combination. The Bicerin was super unique as well, being a layered chocolate and coffee drink. Their space is big and open with many seatings. Staffs were very experienced and knowledgeable. Can't wait to be back and bring literally everyone!
google avatar

Marietta G.

Yelp
Good selection of pastry! Love the ice drink the other hot drink too thick for me! Will definitely be back here

Yelp
Order: 12 oz mocha Pros: the mocha was really hot and very good! Could have used a lil more sugar. But overall, it was really really good. The person who took my order was cool and had some decent recommendation for a newbie. This would be a great date spot!!! Cons: n/a

Yelp
Exploring downtown and needed some energy, we came across this chocolate shop. So we decided to post up here. Here was our experience AMBIANCE: Parking: Welcome to downtown so you have some plaza parking here and there and then street parking. Seating: A chill place for individuals or small groups. Room for maybe 20-30 people. Vibes: This is downtown so you're relatively close to a lot of spots from the riverwalk or even Powell's bookstore. The spot itself is fun. Once you enter you see the chocolate churning machines. It's fun seeing how the chocolate swirts and the sweet smell of them. The spot itself is simple and spacious. Great place to study or catch up with a friend. FOOD: Bicerin (Recommend) Best of all ingredients here -sweet cream, chocolate, and espresso. A sweet and earthy flavors to give you a good wakeup. Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie (Recommend) A simple chocolate chip cookie with dark chocolate which made things not too sweet. The ingredients felt fresh and the cookie was soft. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Awesome! Friendly people that were quick with their service. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Fantastic! I enjoyed my time here. Great choices, reasonable prices, delicious delights, and a pleasant ambiance. For those in the area and need a chocolate place, this is your spot. TIPS: * Follow their social media for seasonal updates.

Yelp
Customer service -- super friendly and welcoming. Chocolate chip cookie. Perfect balance of chocolate, butter, and salt. Chocolate ginger cookie. Phenomenal. Cinnamon roll. Delicious. Brownie 10/10 don't recommend. While there was a nice chocolate flavor, it was dry and airy which don't personally prefer when I'm craving a brownie. The first bite without water was rough. I'm a fan of the business and recommend you stop by this cute little shop if you found yourself craving chocolate and in downtown Portland.

Yelp
Indulgent goodness - epic experience, helped by the kindest staff to pick out some delicious goodies for our weekend treat. Loved the non sweet whipped cream and the sparkling water that brought the right break from the rich sweetness
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
Not sure what I was expecting when coming for the drinking chocolate that my friend wanted me to try. It was presented nicely. It tasted good. The sparkling water was a nice addition to cut the sweetness if needed. Staff was friendly. It was a nice place, but I wouldn't go out of my way to revisit.
google avatar

Jane W.

Yelp
We love it here. The chocolate is decedent and rich, with lots of tasty drink and food options. They list the sources for their chocolates and have good transparency. Staff is always friendly and helpful. We love watching the chocolate mixer run while we wait for our order too.
google avatar

Brittani C.

Yelp
Yum!! Rich, good quality chocolate Ordered: -Chocolate Chill -Brownie -Lavender chocolate bar Pro: -Chocolate is really good quality!! Watch out because it is quite rich and sweet -Sipping chocolate is blended which was refreshing and a great price for the amount they gave! -Chocolate brownie is VERY DENSE and chocolatey. Good but also not something I could finish in one sitting. -Plenty of seating for you to hang out with friends or work Only thing I wish was that there would be an option for a chilled hot chocolate instead of a blended drink!

Yelp
A scrumptious and educational experience. I was turned off by drinking chocolates ever since Starbucks' Chantico product many years ago. But the version at Roste's is not sugar heavy so I didn't feel nauseated after a consuming a generous portion. I like to slowly add the oozing warm cacao to their homemade whipped cream. Or sip it between bites of some of their other goodies with a palette cleanse of sparkling water. The owner is wealth of knowledge on anything chocolate. End your date night here.

Yelp
Went here today with my wife and some friends. We are celebrating my wife's birthday and our anniversary this weekend. Everyone wanted to go to a coffee shop. In my search for a chill place to go, I stumbled on Roste. So I said, "well why not chocolate and coffee?" I didn't have to twist anyone's arm. We went. The atmosphere here is cool. Kind of rustic meets industrial with a coffee shop flair. Their menu and bakery case gives more than enough options. So much so that I had some decision fatigue. I'll rate each item at the end of this review if you're interested. Folks who worked there were really nice. One told me their experience of a specific chocolate bar I was thinking of buying. It did take quite a while to get our food and drinks. However, they do have table service and the presentation is awesome. We had plenty of time and it was well worth the wait. Here are my ratings: Drinking chocolate: 7/10. It was pretty good. I wish it came with some other small bites of sweets like other chocolate places. It gives you a chance to really enjoy the flavors. Bicerin: 9/10. Never had one before and it was awesome. Definitely recommend. Chocolate cinnamon bun: 8/10. Soft, flavorful, roll with delicious chocolate/cinnamon filling. Went well with drinking chocolate. Breakfast sandwich: 7/10 decent b-fast biscuit with amble bacon. Would have liked it more w/out the sauce Mocha- 8/10 it tasted like a mocha should. Like coffee with some chocolate. Spiced mocha- 10/10. I am not one for these types of drinks but my friend ordered it. I took a sip and was shocked! One of the best chocolate drinks I've had in a long time.

Yelp
Come with me and you'll be in a world of imagination. Seriously, the moment you open these large doors, you will get carried away by the wind of the chocolate scent. So much weight and power in the air. I ordered the drinking chocolate, which for this current season was a Vietnamese chocolate. Each season carries different chocolates from around the world, so I will make sure I come back. The quality and viscosity of the drinking chocolate was potent and delicious. They provide whip cream and sparkling water to help provide a cleansing agent. In this way, you will be taken on a journey to chocolate goodness. Plenty of seating for large parties or intimate settings.

Yelp
Just had the most amazing time at Roste Chocolate Shop in Portland! From the moment I walked in, the sweet aroma hit me like a cocoa-infused hug. Their chocolate game is on point! The variety they offer is mind-blowing. From rich and velvety chocolates to amazing pastries, they've got it all. Each bite was a flavor explosion! The staff at Roste is as sweet as their treats! They're super friendly and know their stuff and their recommendations were spot-on. Their passion for chocolate is contagious! What's really cool is that Roste Chocolate Shop supports local producers. They use top-notch, locally sourced ingredients, which makes their treats taste even more special Calling all chocolate lovers: You've gotta visit Roste Chocolate Shop in Portland. It's a slice of chocoholic paradise! Your taste buds will thank you, I promise. Don't miss out on this chocolate adventure!
google avatar

Yelp
This was an absolutely amazing experience. Walking in your immediately met with a delightful aroma (at least in my opinion) and modern setting. Then you're greeted by a friendly employee in addition to some yummy pastries staring at you. I was driven toward their hot chocolate and a pastry. Both in which I enjoyed. Also, take a peak at the chocolate they have sitting out for viewing pleasure :))) Super cool!
google avatar

Gloria T.

Yelp
Great place to drink and eat some chocolates! Coffee, mochas and teas are also available. Large space with lots of seats. On weekends, most treats will be sold out towards the end of the night. Dog friendly with dog treats =)
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
The sipping chocolate was so good that I felt a little bad about myself. Guilty. Like I was doing something wrong. Like I was eating the chocolate chips before baking the cookies, or just eating the frosting on a cake, or eating all the bacon. Stops conversation, causes you to contemplate life and the cosmos. Just stare into the void. I'm not worthy.
google avatar

Gavin E.

Yelp
Always amazing mocha and treats. Good coffee available, too. Staff are the actual best.
google avatar

Yelp
Supertasty freshly baked vegan chocolate chip cookie, friendly service, great atmosphere.

Yelp
It's beginning to feel and look a lot like Christmas in the PDX. Wet and chilly with snow *****flurries***** Got a cup hot chocolate? Get it at Roste! The best!!!! Fair trade cacao beans from India roasted on site into creamy and thick delicious hot chocolate in the PDX winter wonderland. Let it snow*****
google avatar

Monica S.

Yelp
Featured on top 50 hot cocoa places in US & Canada, making it to top 15. I can see why. They make their chocolate in house, each of the chocolates has a distinctive flavour. Their hot cocoa is rich and decadent and you can choose which chocolate you want in your drink. To top that, you can buy chocolate from their store, even drinking chocolate AND sample the liquid chocolate. You walk into the store and are hit by a beautiful aroma of hot molten chocolate and it's so cozy especially during winter. The staff is warm and insightful about their chocolate too. Overall I had a very positive experience.
google avatar

Gwen W.

Yelp
For people wanting to try the hot chocolate: it is a nice level of not overly sweet, which I really like. Keep in mind that the hot chocolate is very very rich, and fairly thick. Love this place very much
google avatar

Ankita T.

Yelp
I was looking for a chocolate tour and came across this establishment. They make their chocolate in house and they explained the process and shared the history of chocolate. We had 3 different chocolates to try along with two sipping chocolates accompanied with whipping cream and soda water to cleanse the palette. The sipping chocolate was unlike anything I ever tasted. Since we took the tour, we also got discount on any items purchased. The vibe is similar to a coffee shop with plenty seating for a cafe. I will be back :)
google avatar

Daniel N.

Yelp
Wow. Never been to a chocolate house before. The owner Michael is very passionate about his chocolate craft and makes sure you understand how chocolate is made when asked. All the chocolate is made in house from cocao from different parts of the world and incorporated into delicious frozen drinks, pastries and ganache. Service was great and it's a great place to study if you want a break from the traditional coffee shop. You should definitely come check this place out!
google avatar

Fraya S.

Yelp
You will not be disappointed. Delicious chocolate beverages / treats. I got the regular milk chocolate, and it's everything I hoped for to get cozy on a chilly day. Warm and rich, like snuggling in a blanket. Mexican hot chocolate tastes spicy. The drinking chocolate is also very good and rich. The whipped cream that comes with it is infused with vanilla bean, you can see the specks of the beans in it. I wish to return here more often. The shop is spacious and the are ample amount of seats. It seems that people stay for a long time here. My group was there for about an hour, and the other tables were already there when we arrived and still there when we left.
google avatar

Tara B.

Yelp
Amazing place! The moment you walk in you are surrounded with the smell of chocolate! The staff was very friendly and easy going for a slow weekday morning. We had a chocolate brownie, kids hot chocolate, and Bicerin. Everything was very good! The brownie was rich, without being overly sweet or bitter. The kids hot chocolate was the perfect temp for her to drink almost right away, and even the whipped creme was laced with chocolate. The period an chocolate bar we took home got raze reviews. I will be back to try the sipping and drinking chocolate!
google avatar

Yelp
Roste is a great complement for Southeast Portland's Cloudforest. I have been searching for a walkable chocolate café for a while, and you should definitely set your taste buds to Roste! The space is large, open, and nicely air conditioned even on the hottest of Portland's summer days. The staff are very knowledgeable about their product, which made ordering very easy, fun, and exciting. The plethora of chocolate-infused baked goods was ideal for me, and I fell in love with the chocolate cinnamon bun since I had never seen one before! In the nicer weather, I recommend swapping out their famous hot chocolates (voted some of the best in the country) for the iced mocha. There are multiple varieties, so you cannot go wrong. If you're enjoying the drink there, I'd recommend staying inside since the roadway is quite busy and loud. If you're heading away or our for a walk, definitely check out a few of the local artists and galleries in the area, too.
google avatar

Rachael C.

Yelp
I was looking for another drinking chocolate place, since one of the most well known ones closed down a number of years ago. I stumbled upon this one by accident and gave it a try. I just ordered the one, and it came with fizzy water and whipped cream on the side. I really enjoyed it and thought it was done well. If in the area I would definitely come back again for a little pick me up
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
Oh my yum! This place smells amazing upon first breath! You are enveloped by the aroma of melted and roasted chocolate as soon as you open the door. It was heaven. Got the sipping chocolate and my friend got the hot cocoa. The dipping chocolate was delicious. I was very thankful for the sparking water and whipped cream to help balance out the richness of the chocolate. Loved that they had options for the single origin chocolate with different tasting notes. I had the India and my friend, Peru. Service was very friendly and welcoming. You could feel the positive comradery between the staff members. Would most definitely come again for another warm chocolate beverage and to try their baked goods.
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
Service, pastries and chocolate drinks were amazing. Lots of vegan choices. Store is clean and organized.
google avatar

Dina R.

Yelp
My partner and I came in here after a long walk excited for a sweet treat. I had read that Roste has many vegan options but when we read the menu at the counter there were no indications of what was/wasn't vegan. I ordered the chocolate chill as it didn't say it had dairy in it. When it arrived, I immediately asked to make sure it was vegan as it did not look like it was. The blonde male presenting staff with glasses immediately became angry with me and said no then stormed off with the drink for about 10 minutes with no communication. He came back with a much smaller cold drink and said "You just cost this small business $10. That's a big loss for us." The drink only cost $8. I apologized many times prior to him saying this. He was very disrespectful and tried to guilt me for a mistake that could easily be prevented by adding vegan labels to their menu. I will unfortunately not be recommending Roste to anyone I know.
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
I had an absolutely fantastic time and gained a wealth of knowledge about chocolate at the Yelp Elite event hosted by Roste. Michael, the passionate owner, is incredibly knowledgeable about all things chocolate. Despite my initial concerns about indulging in sweets on an empty stomach, I was pleasantly surprised as that was not the case at all. The drinking chocolate offered a rich, aromatic, and deeply roasted flavor that resembled a morning coffee. I'm thrilled to bring my friends here soon and hopefully get them hooked as well.
google avatar

Earnie G.

Yelp
Wish I could recommend this place. I can't, and that pains me as a chocophile. The chocolate making equipment here is good (better equipment can be had, but this stuff is completely adequate). The roasting machine is a real treasure and is stunning to even look at. But the skill just isn't there yet. The chocolate has many noticeable flaws that make the experience less than stellar. Perhaps in two or three years they will get better. I certainly won't be returning before than because I don't want to have to write more negative things about a craft chocolate maker. Sad.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I was waiting for an event to start and decided to explore on my own. Everyone here is so friendly, and all the stuff on the menu is so tasty. I started with some egg white bites since I wanted something savory. They were perfect and so hardy. You could taste some really good cheese permeating every bite. I late had some decaf espresso to cleanse my palate which was delightful herbal with bracing acidity. I felt alive again after that espresso. I love that they serve it with some sparkling water in the traditional style. I grabbed a lavender chocolate bar to go for get-together, though I was hoping for a Belize base. Totally work checking out if you're in the area!

Yelp
Visiting Roste on a cold rainy Saturday was a delightful experience, and something I've been looking forward to for months! I think we were helped by the owner; he was so friendly and happy to talk about his business. We sampled the three chocolates available: Columbia, Costa Rica, and Trinidad. I had Trinidad and my boyfriend had Costa Rica -- both as "drink chocolate"... YUM!!! Definitely unique flavors and all delicious. I was honestly a little worried beforehand thinking like, maybe I am a chocolate idiot and somehow the fine flavors will be lost on me. Thankfully that was not the case! Everything was soo unbelievably wonderful and decadent. We also had the marmalade cake which was good! I wouldn't get it again, but it was tasty and a fun thing to try. They rotate their chocolates, so I will be back to see what new additions they have in store in the future! Cheers!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This is a chocolate lovers dream. We tried the drinking chocolate and the sipping chocolate, both very heavy, but good. The chocolate heart was also good. Service is friendly and the space is nice. Definitely worth a stop.
google avatar

Kristin C.

Yelp
Probably the best hot chocolate I've ever had. They used the Vietnam chocolate and I wish I tried it before I left, because I would've gotten it as a drinking chocolate too. I wish there was a little more info on what they had, the chocolate, etc. they had two kinds of chocolate melted and mixing in the counter, I didn't know if there was a choice for the hot chocolate, or if there was an option to try them both to decide. I also got a brownie and it was just ok. I would've skipped the brownie and gotten another drink. Or chocolate bars. Overall though, worth the trip and worth going back for. The staff was nice and it didn't take long to get my items. Also probably good that I don't live close by, because I'd be here way too often!
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Hot chocolate is one of my favorite drinks so Roste Chocolate House was a must try for me. I bought a medium Mexican hot chocolate and a brownie. The Mexican hot chocolate had a great balance of chocolate, chili and cinnamon. It was delicious and foamy! The brownie was large, dance and fudgy. It was fantastic. The shop has plenty of table to sit and chill at like I did. It can accommodate small groups too. Overall, it's a great plan to visit to fulfill your chocolate cravings and be cozy.
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
A chocolate house? Don't mind if I do! Came here after a recommendation from our realtor and really loved the ambiance of the place. It has an industrial vibe with plenty of big windows to see what they are making and give you a view as you enjoy your chocolate. With the cold weather it was the perfect time to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and their drinking chocolate that was made with chocolate from Tanzania which had a cherry undertone that was evident in each sip. It seems they rotate the chocolate that they use so it will be interesting to see the other flavors they use. Both chocolate drinks are decadent so loved how they brought it on a platter with seltzer water and whipped cream to temper the richness. They don't give the whip when you take it to go so spend some time here to enjoy the space and your drinks! I also got a brownie since they looked so good and was not disappointed. More on the rich and crumbly side vs. being more like fudge so order based on your preferences. They had other delicious chocolate tarts and pastries that looked divine in the case but those will need to wait for another visit.

Yelp
wow, you walk in and are overcome with the scent of chocolate. i brought my niece for a treat. we ordered the seasonal banana latte (delish and they caramelize the bananas in house), the chocolate chill (delightful and not too sweet; super quality whipped cream as well), and an iced mexican mocha (the caffeine i needed but holy smokes it was spicy. every sip was a ball of fire down my throat). we had a great time sitting and sipping our drinks. staff was so friendly.

Yelp
Unique chocolate drinks and associated friends restaurant. Such a nice space. Tons of seating with outlets and good wifi! Great customer service. Will come back to work :)
google avatar

Ellie N.

Yelp
I got a chocolate drink, Indian chocolate. When I got the drink, I was surprised at how small the cup was. First thought: oh man, $5 for this tiny cup. After the first sip: oh man, it was a bargain that I paid $5 for this. The Indian chocolate has a slight hint of banana, very interesting. 70% dark chocolate with a bit of sugar. It's not sweet at all. After I finished the drink, I opened the lid and used a spoon to finish up the leftover chocolate on the bottom, it was simply too good. It's my first time trying drink chocolate and it won't be my last. I'm totally hooked.

Decadent bean to bar fair trade chocolate and wonderful cafe! With so many chocolate boutiques closing, it's so nice to see a new chocolatier pop up in the city. LOVE Roste, my family enjoyed a decadent chocolatey feast to our heart's content! The goopy sipping chocolate is really rich and the flight is fun to try, great for sharing! The chocolate has different texture and flavor profile based on the origin. While Peru was the rarest chocolate, Indian was my favorite (no bias here!). We definitely experienced a chocolate overload after a few delightful spoonfuls, we threw in the towel and wrapped up the chocolate in little containers.  The chocolate was great in coffee the next morning, the perfect mocha! The Hot Chocolate is really sweet and 1/2 way through the cup, I threw in the towel and passed it down for others to enjoy. The Mocha is perfect and helps cut the sweetness of the chocolate. The frappuccinos looked tempting! The Chocolate Tart is hands-down the best pastry! It's very rich and decadent. The brownie was a bit dry and very chocolately, 3 pounds of chocolate go into a batch of brownies! The chocolate chip cookie was very dry and stale and has a 2 day rule. Even after a staff member gave me a fresh one baked that day, it still didn't taste good. The muffin and the cinnamon bun were also a miss. No matter how many times I searched for the perfect bite, I just couldn't find it. The alluring pastries are deceptive - just go for the tart. Save room for the chocolatey drinks! My trip wouldn't be complete without some chocolate bars to take home! The luscious hazelnut Gianduja nuggets are so soft and buttery, they literally melt in your mouth! I enjoyed them so much that my sister-in-law bought some for me after I flew back and gave it to me on a family vacation. The new white chocolate Matcha bar with puffed rice and coconut flakes was tasty and made for great gifts! Roste is always a culinary highlight of my Portland trips, the chocolate is mouth-watering goooood! Wish there was a location on the East Coast in DC, can't wait to fly back for more chocolate!

Yelp
The shop is super cute and cafe vibes forsure. We got two different kinds of sipping chocolate, Vietnamese and Costa Rican. The Vietnamese was a bit too bitter, but the CR was delicious. I got one of their seasonal drinks which was good as welll. The only major knock was the pastries could have been warmed up as they were sitting out. Made the brownie really hard to eat.

Yelp
I wish that this perfect coffee house was in Marin County where I live because it is wonderful. When I walked into the pleasant and large space the scent of chocolate made my mouth water. I ordered an iced mocha and a scone. The people working there were true artisans who happened to also serve food and it was evident they were proud of their creations. Every time I visit Portland I will head straight for Roste. The mocha was incredible-not too sweet, a deep chocolate taste and refreshing. Every bite of the scone was crunchy and soft. I can't wait to return.
