"As the 'Manor' part of its name suggests, this is not just a restaurant but a country house hotel – a Regency-era one to be specific, located on the edge of pretty Ambleside in the Lake District. The elegant dining room sports original shutters and cornicing alongside bold William Morris wallpaper and striking chandeliers. The cooking is precise, technically ambitious and visually impressive, while being underpinned by classical elements like the Bordelaise sauce with fillet of Cumbrian beef." - Michelin Inspector

Rothay Manor (Ambleside, The Lake District) 1 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Ambleside, on the north end of Lake Windermere, is the setting for Rothay Manor, a Regency-era country house that’s been tastefully updated for the boutique-hotel era, retaining the period character that makes it distinctive while modernizing its facilities and comforts. Of particular note is the restaurant, which offers refined British dishes underpinned by classic techniques. The diversions, naturally, are focused on the outdoors, and include hands-on mushroom foraging tours and professionally guided walks." - Tablet Hotels

Rothay Manor Hotel Review | Hotels Above Par

"Set in Ambleside among the fells, this boutique retreat pairs regency bones and a vision-in-white exterior with patterned, highly stylized wallpapers, pastel walls, and slick loungers piled with cushions to deliver the relaxed vibes owners Jamie and Jenna Shail intended; the contemporary glow-up can misfire, with ill-thought corridors that feel more retirement home than weekend blockbuster and a flurry of scuffs and worn carpets that beg seasonal touch-ups. My Fairfield suite embodied demure, upscale modern elegance—garden wallpapers, box windows framing greens, and a roomy claw-foot tub—with a massive, soft bed that was a symphony of pillows, though the TV didn’t work and a few wall marks distracted. In the dining room, British grub with northern flair (think suet dumplings) arrives via a seasonal, local menu heavy on prime cuts—venison, chicken, beef—alongside hearty triple-fried chips and garden veg; earthy flavors shine, but the contemporary takes can overcomplicate, proving simple is better. Breakfast is the standout: a spot-on fry-up, smoked haddock, eggs any way, and excellent breads and preserves. This is walking country and I was encouraged by staff to hit the trails that start at the door—wellies to borrow from the boot room—or drive for bigger hikes; I also liked that it’s a 10-minute walk to Ambleside pier for Windermere Lake Cruises to Bowness. Overall, it reads as elegant country-club on the lake and a contemporary spin on the English country house that some will love and others won’t, backed by a bar, restaurant, and gardens, with 23 rooms from about 270 USD a night." - Luke Abrahams

Visited from 30th October to November 7th 2025|Stayed in the Fairfielld Suite with our dog.|Beautifully decorated throughout the hotel and our suite. Comfortable bed and furniture.|Lovely little touches made our visit even more special. Fresh milk for our tea and coffee, lovely homemade biscuits. Dog bowl, bed and towels provided for our dog.|All areas of hotel are sympathetic to the grandeur of what was once a family home. The public areas are comfortable and really well decorated. The staff are wonderful, pleasant, professional and knowledgeable. Food is beyond doubt a lovely dining experience.

A wonderful stay at this beautiful hotel. It really is the most dog friendly hotel in which we’ve stayed. The dogs are as well catered for as the humans. Every aspect of the offering has been really well thought out. The staff are super friendly and the surroundings are lovely. Both the dinner and breakfast were superb and it was great our dog could join us in the special dog friendly room just off the main dining room. It’s beautifully decorated and we didn’t feel like second class citizens but equally the dogs were not going to disturb other diners. Lots of lovely walks near by and we will definitely stay again!

We stayed for three nights with our greyhound while we visited the Lakes. The hotel is truly dog-friendly, with a dining room designed so that those with dogs feel part of the experience, without inconveniencing anyone else. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and understand how to please dog lovers. Decor is fine and up to date and the gardens are very pleasant. Excellent location and very good value for money.

Was lucky enough to be given an afternoon tea voucher for my birthday.||The hotel is stunning, well looked after. The gardens were so nice and quite peaceful. Inside was beautifully decorated.||The lady on reception was lovely and friendly and took us into the bar area to wait for the gentleman to take us to our table. ||Once in the dinning area was asked if there was a table we would prefer to sit at. ||When taking our drinks order, the option was coffee or tea. My husband had tea but I ask for a glass of water. The waiter offered me a hot chocolate which I had. Know it was July and a warm Friday afternoon but it was the best hot chocolate.||Was asked if there was any allergies. Whilst it’s not an allergy we don’t like salmon. The waiter was so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We wasn’t rushed at any point.||The sandwiches were so nice. The bread was lovely and soft. The cake selection was great and so moorish.||Throughly enjoyed our afternoon at the Rothay Manor.|Would highly recommend.

Stunning from start to finish. Had one of the rooms with a hot tub and it was well worth it. The staff were super friendly, nothing too much for them. Breakfast was super and you could tell was fresh produce (small thing, would advise that toast should come as standard). Would happily recommend and stay again.

Just wow - we come back year after year, and it just gets better and better. We were so well looked after by Tom and the team, the rooms and food are amazing. Breakfasts are sheer quality, service &character! Dinners are exquisite, non-guests come to eat here, and that tells you everything. Wonderful place, you will never be disappointed. Well done to the team! Mark & Kate October 3rd October 2026

I write very few reviews. But sometimes you just need to reflect the effort and care expended on your behalf. Just celebrated our anniversary over 3 days at RM. It was lovely. We had our little dog with us and it couldn't have been more a more relaxing break. I gave 5 stars on the feedback form for the people, the place, the food and drink, the room and the overall hospitality. Isaac and the team looked after us so well and we will go back quaranteed.

We had an incredible dinner at Rowan in Rothay Manor. The standout was the capered plaice beautifully cooked, buttery, and vibrant. The sides were perfect complements: Jersey potatoes and tender, charred broccolini that added just the right balance. The beetroot soup was silky, earthy, and full of depth. The only slight miss was the garden salad, which felt a bit ordinary compared to the rest of the meal. That said, the overall experience was exceptional easily one of the best ten meals I've ever had. Refined yet comforting, every dish felt like it was made with care and precision. Rowan is absolutely worth a visit if you're anywhere near Ambleside!
