Okay, here I go bucking trend again. Sometimes ya just gotta.. Wish there was another 3/4th. star I could give it but yelp doesn't deal in fractions.
Rouge, a French Moroccan restaurant on 71 st. originally planned for a brunch late in January, sounded to all like a very good idea for Christmas brunch.. A reservation for 10 was made a couple weeks earlier, knowing how busy places can be on holidays, Three days before Christmas, the person in our party who was communicating with the restaurant, called and said there were seven definite but please keep it for 10. The next day, four more indicated the desire to join us , ( bringing it to 11..one extra, should be no problem, right?) Wrong. She was informed by Nabil, who we found out was the owner, chef, order taker, AND server that seven was all he could possibly accommodate, knowing how busy Rouge would be, and adding ANY extra would be impossible. Oh well, It is what it is
When we got there at 2pm on Christmas, we were greeted by the owner......and a totally empty place..except for our party...and it remained that way for almost the entire two hours we were there..even as we left, there were still only two other parties with four adults and two kids total. Whatever crowds were coming , we were told were scheduled for 5pm and later. Point is, we could have easily reserved for 20 people..and had no problem seating.. All I can figure is that Nabil, perhaps having only a couple other people helping him serve at that hour may have thought that the three extra people that would have brought our party up to 11 would have been a burden?? I've nooo idea why the restriction to 7 only.
What was good and delicious: A free Yelp check-in serving of champagne!
My onion soup. TRES delicious. A taste I had of my friend's Branzino en Papillote was tender and delicious, very nicely cooked.
An order of Salmon in Citron was pronounced delicious.
My Escargot eu de Pastis, an interesting anisette flavored sauce, though not the garlicky buttery version (which I prefer), was something attractively served and nestling in a puff pastry shell.
Sometimes I find I enthusiastically jump OUT of the box just to scurry back in :-)...
nteresting rolls ((for which they told us no butter was available), but there WAS olive oil and Nabil DID mix up a little cup of the oil mixed with an olive reduction...Very good.
The Hudson River Valley Faux Gras appetizers, very tiny, not even as big as a match cover, but very tasty.
What was not so hot:
The music, although very nice was too loud and we had to ask three times to have it lowered to the point where we could converse. (Remember, we were the only people there?)
The skewered shrimp covered with bacon, appetizers was a fine idea but maybe the time it took to broil the bacon was too much for the pinky finger sized shrimp. They were okay but dried out..,..and at $3.95 each, were a disappointment
Bouillabaisse.. should be a delightfully delicate, broth with fish chunks, lobster, shrimp, etc. It was a verrry small potion in a verrry big bowl making it look even smaller , but presentation would not have been a problem if it had not been so strongly fishy and salty.. It was returned and Nabil was gracious in asking what else he could prepare. Another friend was not pleased with her Salad Maison entree but ate it . Another friend ordered a steak . The wrong steak, ( one 10 dollars higher) was served with the wrong topping. He said it looked good and ate it but pronounced it meh.
I think, that for the prices Rouge charge, Excellence is not too much to ask..
The restaurant is beautifully decorated warm and cozy looking , with a full bar, fireplace and the open air back yard dining area is truly beautiful and I was looking forward to dining there in January but we' unanimously agreed that a future visit was not in the cards.
