Royal Oak Considers New Food Truck Ordinance for Downtown Bars | Eater Detroit

"Joining the push for a new Royal Oak food-truck ordinance, River Rouge Brewing — which does not have a kitchen — supports allowing food trucks at downtown businesses with liquor licenses but no kitchen because patrons have been asking for that option; the city has given preliminary approval and scheduled a public hearing for November 12, while the Royal Oak Restaurant Association warns the move could hurt restaurants already strained by parking problems." - Brenna Houck

Came down to the Brewery for the first time for Rouge-tober Fest. The Octoberfest sausages were fantastic, we also tried the pretzels and pizza but the sausage still the best. For libations we tried the German Pilsner and One Finger Snap w/Krush, both were tasty but I took home 4 cans of the One Finger Snap as it's a top notch single hop IPA. I only wish you would have served a Fest Bier/Marzen for the Octoberfest event. Will definately swing by again when in the area🍻🍻

Google
Excellent place! I went for the beers and really ended up enjoying the pizza! The beers are fantastic as well. I love Hazy IPA’s and Rouge Rivers has a long list of quality hazies. My wife doesn’t like hazies, but always ends up finding a drink she likes, whether it’s a light beer or a cider. The pizza here is so solid that I will get it for takeout on nights that I’m not drinking. We tried their Jerk Chicken and Windy City, which are both specials so it might not be around for long, and both were excellent! We also tried the Margherita and that was great too! So much cheese and sauce! Whatever the specials are when you go, I’d recommend to just try it because this establishment clearly cares about quality, whether it’s their beer or pizza. I have recently become a big fan of this place. I’ve only been there during nights when there is not an event and love the calm vibe along with the quality beer and pizza. We’ll be sure to check out their events at some point in the next few months. I’ve include some photos of the beer and pizza. Pizza: Windy City Jerk Chicken Margherita Beers: Stereo Dream: Excellent, smooth flavor Dankster Emperor: my favorite, definitely the smoothest and most flavorful of the bunch Rougelands: Solid One Finger Snap (OFS): Solid, made with Krush hops

This is definitely great IPA.!! Very FRESH bought 6 different beers all were produced less than 3 weeks before purchase! (Unlike most breweries these days)

Google
Really great brewery in a quiet neighborhood. Love the location. While it seems like it’s located in an Industrial Park complex, it’s right off of a subdivision, so it feels like a local neighbourhood brewery. Nice and quiet, at least on Sunday when we went. They were setting up for some live music which we didn’t stay for, but had a lovely time on their patio. I chose their flight so I could get a few different options. Really loved the Holy Trinity. Great summer beer. Nice and hoppy but with a burst of citrus. I also really liked Babe Brew. You really did get a good flavour of the grapes used in their beer. Sour but not too sour. Also a great summer beer, an easy drink. Only been here a few times but have liked the beer both times I have been and the atmosphere is really welcoming. Staff are friendly and helpful. Thank you so much, will definitely be back.

Google
Can’t believe I’m only leaving a review now! We’ve been fans of Rouge River Brewery for a long time. I come for their hazy IPAs because they’re some of the best around, and my partner isn’t usually a fan of those but he always finds a beer he enjoys. We also love the community of people who gather here, the creativity in their constantly rotating beers, and the fantastic pizza. It’s great that some of their beers are available at the LCBO for when we can’t make the drive. Also check their Instagram for events, they often host open mic nights, awesome bands, and other fun gatherings. Overall an outstanding brewery that never disappoints. So if you love gorgeous hazy IPAs, come to Rouge River, and if you don’t, still come!

Google
What a hidden gem! It might take a bit of work to get out of Toronto and find this place, but it's well worth it. They do jazz combos, School of Rock, open mic etc. We came on a Sunday afternoon. It was quiet and calm and peaceful and I loved it. The bartender was kind and knowledgeable and even suggested some things for us to do in Toronto. Go here. You're welcome.

Google
Randomly stopped by this cute little Brewery company today. From the moment we walked in, we felt very welcomed. Definitely, it's a place of inclusion. Ashley was welcoming and kind and extremely knowledgeable and helpful with what beers they offer. There was not a huge variety but definitely was an unique and wide spread of variations of flavours. A perfect spot to stop on a Sunday afternoon to end the weekend.

Google
Limited food menu, pizza was great. The beer was great. There were plenty of seats available. Parking was a little hard when we went but just parked behind the building.

Yelp
This is such a treat! To have a vibey brewery uptown, and the beer selection is amazing here. You can bring your own food in there as well! The service here is self serve but the server is so friendly and knowledgeable. The place is full of great people and it truly is a great crowd. Everyone knows how to enjoy themselves here. I will definitely keep repeating this place!

Yelp
Unfortunately this place is NO LONGER dog friendly. Except for the patio. However, it being cold, it's hard to chill at the patio. The new pizza they have I am not a huge fan. It's unfortunate but, it is what it is

Yelp
A local craft brewery in Markham with amazing pizza from Patterson's pizza! Checked out this local brewery after friends in the area highly recommended it and hyped it up. It did not disappoint! The vibes here are immaculate with lots of locals from the community hanging out. It's dog friendly which makes it a plus! They even have a wall of dog photos and a treat jar for all the doggie visitors. I'm not a beer drinker myself, but everyone I went with really enjoyed their pints. They have an extensive beer list on tap and a retail shop for you to bring home your favourite beers in a can! The highlight for me was Patterson's pizza that is permanently there as a popup now, from Friday to Sundays! The pizza was definitely a 10/10 and neapolitan style - can't wait to come back for more. Visit this brewery with family or friends for some delicious beers and pizza (on the weekends)! It won't disappoint!

Yelp
Nice little brewery. Very laid back atmosphere and dogs are allowed inside! There is only food available sometimes, so keep that in mind if you come hoping to eat. You can bring food in though. The service was fine...our only interaction was ordering a drink.

Yelp
I love unexpected experiences. I get to share two of them in this post, although the focus will ultimately be on Rouge River Brewing. On Instagram, there is a Markham-based business account called Patterson's Pizza. It specializes in Neapolitan-style pies using fermented sourdough. Each week, there is a pizza lottery where, if you are selected, you get to place an order for pizza and more. The demand is insanely popular to place an order for pizza. I have been trying for a while. Just before my trip to the Twin Cities, I gave it another try, not thinking that anything would happen. The person ahead of me who was selected couldn't make it. I felt like I had won the lottery because I was chosen! The funny thing is that this pizza order was my third this week. I had had Pizza Hut and PizzaForno earlier. Could I do it and not get sick of more pizza? Yes! I placed my order. The owner and pizza maker, Ian, was so nice. The pickup site is at Rouge River Brewing. I suspect that he also accesses the place's oven to make his creations. My pickup time was between 5 pm and 6:30 pm. I was so ready to pick up my food that day after work. I pass by Rouge River Brewing often. It's on Bullock Drive, smack in front of a three-way intersection with stop signs. When I don't feel like driving along highway 7 between Markham Road and the western point of CF Markville Shopping Centre, Bullock Drive is my route. Parking was atrocious. It was not only perfect weather for downing craft beer, but there were a bunch of dance moms with glammed-up girls and dudes looking at their souped-up cars with ridiculously huge spoilers in the lot. I found a parking spot in front of a business. It technically wasn't a parking spot. However, everyone else was parking in front of them, so I did the same. It required my dishing out my parallel parking skills, which have come in handy often these days. I walked over. I liked the patio area outside the brewery. I walked in and it felt cozy. There was lots of wood, from the kegs of beer, to the countertops and tables. At the bar area, I met Ian. He had my order ready. We chatted. Such a nice guy! I thanked him and wished him a great night. In front of me was a beer menu on the wall. Pizza and beer sounds good on an evening full of hockey games. My inner voice was nudging me to get some beer. It's Friday. You deserve beer. The nice woman at the bar helped me out. She asked if I liked IPAs. I do. She had me sample the Cookin' IPA. It was fantastic! My tastebuds woke up from the boredom of my driving over here drinking nothing. It was smooth and so good. It was different with a multitude of flavours thrown at me. I knew that I had to get a can. I then asked about the Groovy Fruit beer. It's essentially a rainbow sherbert sour in beer form. It's a sour with key lime, raspberry, and cara cara orange puree. I had to have it. I was so happy with my two cans of beer. I paid with a credit card. I added a tip. I tapped and was good. I thanked the woman for all her help. She was wonderful. I left with boxes of carbs and more carbs in a drinkable format. It helped that both cans were icy cold on a warm day. I would get both beers again. This brewery does a fine job crafting beer. The finish is lovely and there is so much flavour happening in each sip. I'm so proud that this place is in Markham. I wish that I had discovered it sooner, but better late than dead! I'm a fan. I'm definitely coming back for more beer. I hope to dine in and figure out what food they offer here. The vibe is casual. It looks like there's live music here, too. Perfect! (157)

Yelp
The best hazy ipa I've found in Toronto! The pizza selection was terrific and nice little patio to keep kiddos secured from parking lot. Will return anytime I'm in town!

Yelp
Huge fan of their Juice Cleanse Smoothie Seltzer (Guava, Mango, Banana)! It literally tastes like a mango smoothie with a splash of beer. It's 7% and you can't taste it. It's dangerously good!!!

Yelp
Got invited to a Yelp Elite Beers & Badges night at this dog-friendly craft brewery. Been to many Markham Dog Alliance events there with my golden retriever dog in the past and always loved how welcoming & friendly the staff are and how cozy the atmosphere is for both humans and dogs. I tried their Pegasus (blonde ale) and Brazilian Lemonade (sour with lime and lactose) on tap and really enjoyed the taste of both. Will definitely be heading back for more. They host several events and theme nights at the brewery, but it's also a great place to drop in during the week to unwind. You can often find Patterson's Pizza (72 hour fermented sourdough pizza) there too, which is both delish and pairs perfectly with a cold beer. My dog gives it 4 paws out of 4 paws up.

Yelp
Shout-out to the 47 on Bloor St in Toronto (a wicked restobar turned temporary bottle shop) for turning me onto this fantastic brewery in Markham. I'm a huge fan of sours and always on the hunt for a smooth, balanced sour that isn't cloyingly sour or too sweet. The White Grape & Kiwi Sour was an amazing surprise that nailed it. Just lovely! Another great bet is the Pigasus, a hazy blonde ale made with wheat. It's a simple beer done really well...mild, crisp and crushable, especially on a bright, sunshiney day. Only downside is they don't offer free shipping (it's $10 so not the end of the world) but most other brewers offer free Ontario delivery with a minimum order. But that's a minor critique for an excellent brewery.

Yelp
Biked here to see what my home town (now a city) could brew up and it was exactly what I love, hoppy beer. The guys here were great. They told me about all their brews and answered all my questions while I had the chance to sample their weekly creations. I love where my city is going and this brewery will help us in a big way! Cheers.

Yelp
I had been waiting and waiting and the wait is OVER! Finally Markham has a local craft brewery: Rouge River Brewing. For a newly opened brewery, I am just so impressed with their offerings: - Autumn Pale Ale (6.0% abv.) - Autumn IPA (6.8% abv.) - New Zealand Dry Hopped Sour (5.0% abv.) - Apricot Sour (5.0% abv.) - New Zealand Double IPA (9.6% abv.) - Just One More- IPA (7.2% abv.) *New Release* All available in 500 ml bottle to go. And the best of all, you will be welcome with open arms if you drop by for a Free sampling! Beer guys are just too cool! Winter Version will be ready soon... Now I have a local craft brewery!!

Yelp
I read in an article somewhere* that the founder of Rouge River Brewing once worked at Mill St., got tired of making the same thing over and over, and so he took his experience and training back to his hometown to make the kind of brews he wants. And that's how a GTA suburb got its very own local craft beer factory. Absolutely great and needed for a city that could use a lot more culture than we usually give credit for. I mean, there are so many breweries in Toronto proper itself (how many are there just within a 2 mile radius of my own house??), I cannot keep tabs on them all! Meanwhile in a humble industrial plaza close to Markham Village and Markville mall, next to a tributary Creek that snakes into the actual Rouge not too far away, lies this upstart brewery that's making its own statements in the GTA's exploding beer scene. Quite the way for me to get here though, sigh. It does function as a neighbourhood pub. The place is bustling with what looked like neighbourhood locals, and there is a stage set up. Take-home bottle in the back fridges, and they do tasting flights yeah. I'd say it rivals Bellwoods in terms of youthful inventiveness and the rapid frequency of new products being circulated. You could barely keep up with news on their Instagram of new releases pumping out of this small shop. Yes they got some beers with punny names from the land of 90s rap (Forgot About Drei, Still Drei, Danksters Paradise, etc.--which prob says much about the brewmaster's influences), and a seasonal IPA for every one of the seasons. Their fruit sours are a standout however. Did Bellwoods ever think of using papaya? Cuz Rouge River did, and their Papaya Sour is an amazing tropical acid trip. I certainly like the variety and creativity of their products. See, the suburbs ain't so back, you just gotta put your back into it (put your ass into it)... Yelp
The Rouge River Brewing is worth the experience. They brew sours, such as the Raspberry Sour and Blackberry Sour. Both have a juicy, fruit flavours coupled with a mellow tartness and almost imperceptible hints of sweetness. They tease you with a combination of flavours and fragrances so beguiling that the next sip begins almost before the previous one is completed. Part of the charm of Rouge River's dining room is that patrons may admire future wine and bourbon barrel aged sours and stouts. In addition, the service is excellent, and the brewery, though it has a limited menu, encourages patrons to bring their own food.

Yelp
Hiding in plain sight on an industrial road in Markham is this gem. Spacious with broad tables in front, a tasting bar midway, and the operations in back. Turn around and there's a stage for live music. Behind the bar is a turntable and a collection of vinyl. Along the wall are several spouts offering their latest pours below a large menu of beers. I tasted a flight of their autumn ale, their Belgian, and their fuller flavoured beer. The beers on offer were first rate. Flavourful and fresh and balanced with full palate presence. The owner's brother was offering his delicious chili in a well-baked milk bread bowl. They plan to have live jazz Fridays. This is what Markham needs.

Yelp
This place is SUPER hipster vibe in Markham. I love it. Oh on the plus yes it's baby friendly. The place is spacious and the staff is friendly! You can try different brew and wow they are good! This is coming from a person that doesn't like beer. Hands down my fav place for beer. This is also close to home which is a bonus I can come here after a long day and the drive is pretty close. They also have board games! I wanted the jenga but it was already in used. But they have other games too! I will def be back. OH. I would had given this place a 5 stars.... if they had more food options, it's kinda hard to drive 5 beers without snacks..... they do have 2 options for food but I was itching for fries.. or nuts... something that's salty....! Please add more food items on the menu!
google avatar

Veronica C.

Yelp
I think I have always passed by but didn't realize there's a brewing company here. It is spacious and looks like a place where you can host a function here. Got a chance to try different kinds of beer. Among all of the variety, I love the citrus flavour and the coconut ipa more. Server is friendly and nice. It's a nice place to hangout.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great find. I have a passion for beer and I very critical. If you love beer like I do you need to stop by. Tell them the guy from California sent you and enjoy. Every style they make is fantastic.

Yelp
Had the chance to try one of Rouge Rivers brews recently at a local spot in Markham (NextDoor in Unionville) and I was blown away by the quality and craftsmanship that's gone into the creation of these beers! No longer will craft breweries be the sole domain of the 416, tasting rooms and craft breweries are beginning to pop up all over the GTA now and Rouge River has firmly taken point in the East end before anyone else could. It's located in an industrial plaza off of Bullock but it's worth the trek to get there, friendly staff and great beers - you can't go wrong!

Yelp
Moved to Canada late Sep this year and settled down in Markham. Have been trying to find a good brewery near by. I'd say I'm pretty spoiled by craft beers in the US like Treehouse, Trillium, Otherhalf, Founders, etc so I actually have a high standard... I'm surprised to find this "first microbrewery in Markham" is actually ten mins drive from home, and I'm even more surprised to find that their beers are awesome!!! The hoppy, juicy and well balanced Holy Trinity really blew my mind. Never say never jack Daniel barrel aged Russian Imperial Stout tasted intense and full of layers. Good vibe, nice staffs. What can I ask for more? Oh right, there's open mic every Sunday. Cheers.

Yelp
Support your local brewery if you are a craft beer fanatic like me. In my opinion, I would have to say that Rouge River is my go to brewery for IPA and Sours to which I could never really get enough of them. They have a mini-factory tour in the brewery and they also have a hall in which you can go for tastings and live music on the weekend. Always looking forward to what they experiment on next. Recommendation: Highly recommended to those especially into craft beers.

Yelp
Rouge River! finally Markham's got a microbrew! I came back to my home town and I'm super glad there's something local besides going to the LCBO and grabbing that waterloo dark! Its got a fun atmosphere with bands all summer and some tasty beers on tap! They DO have growler fills BUT the downside is that they don't sell growlers... which means you have to bring your own. Not a problem! go try it out!

Mike G.

Yelp
Just opened a bottle of Pineapple Holy Trinity IPA. One swallow and poured the rest down the drain. Definitely the worst beer I have ever had in my 50+ years of sampling different beers. Mike G.

Yelp
Really neat to have a brewery uptown. You can buy beer to go or drink there. Seating area is small and meant to be shared with other customers, but that's how it is downtown too no? You can get a small size of just 2oz I believe and build your own beer flight.
google avatar

Sean H.

Yelp
This place is the best brewery I have ever been to. Hands down. Super friendly, a whole whack of inventive and regularly released beers, and the brewers are incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming. They offer free tasting sessions to help orient you with what you'll enjoy, just make sure you buy several bottles after taking advantage of their generosity!
google avatar

Yelp
They are very supportive within the community. We had our grand opening and they came out to support the event. What I can say is our customers were raving about heir beer. Sadly I do not drink so I can't speak to it first hand, but I know what everyone was saying unsolicited and it was more than good...they were extremely impressed! If your in the area pop into their shop, try a beer and support a local craft brewery! Thanks guys! You rock!!!

Yelp
Months ago we booked a section/reserved a section of the tap house for our wedding celebrations. We had food ordered, flowers ordered, cakes made and people flying in from out of town. Three days before the event, we were told that someone has booked the entire venue for a private event. Ours no longer mattered. When I spoke with the owner he mentioned that he knew nothing about this and that they don't take bookings/reservations unless there is a deposit upon booking the venue. The people who booked the entire venue paid so of course the unpaid bookings do not matter or are worth being apologized to. When I let him know that no one mentioned to us about a deposit when they took our booking and a manager even OK'd our booking... all he had to say for him self (over and over) was 'That is strange' and 'things happen'. Even though he said there was nothing he could do for us, he failed to apologize. It's not like this was some small birthday party gathering. This is a wedding celebration... three days before! Extremely unorganized, so unethical that its disgusting.
