Beyond the Bagel: A Reflection on Culinary Identity in the Jewish Diaspora

"The Beyond the Bagel Food Tour is operated by the Museum of Jewish Montreal and offers a culinary journey through Jewish foods in Montreal. It includes tasting classics like smoked meat and bagels, as well as exploring nearly forgotten delicacies. The tour is available on Tuesdays and Friday to Sunday, excluding holidays, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with ticket prices ranging from $45 to $95 based on age." - Morgan Goldberg

Did the Jewish Food Tour with Darren, and would 180% recommend! Great stops, great stories and a great way to see and learn about Montreal. Come hungry for sure. Thanks for the tour!

Melissa is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide who shared a wealth of information as she guided us through lively current and historically Jewish neighborhoods in Montreal. We were rewarded with delicious food and stories of legendary and iconic Jewish business founders and restaurateurs. We tried bagels from two bakeries, smoked meat sandwiches from three classic delis and had honey cake and croissants at a third bakery. We finished the day off at a local ice creamery. We highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn more about Montreal’s history, Jewish and not, and eat some great food along the way.

A Jewish Food Tour Through Mile End That Hits the Spot (and Then Some) I had the pleasure of joining Round Table Tours for their Jewish Food Tour of Mile End—and it felt like stepping into a delicious, living time capsule of the neighborhood’s past and present. Our group was small (just six of us), which made the experience feel cozy and personal. Melissa, the founder and guide, has been running her company since 2012, and it shows. Her warmth, storytelling, and attention to detail made this more than just a food tour—it was a heartfelt tribute to Mile End’s layered Jewish history. It actually rained the day of our tour, so Foxy Tip: always check the forecast before a walking tour and dress accordingly! But honestly, Melissa made it all worth it. She even brought branded tote bags and water bottles for each of us, which was such a thoughtful touch. This wasn’t just about eating—it was a walk through time. We heard powerful quotes from Jewish authors who lived in the neighborhood during the 1930s and 40s, saw photos of key figures, and explored hidden architectural details you’d miss on your own. It really felt like we were uncovering stories still etched into the city walls. And the food? Unforgettable. Think iconic delis, legendary bagels, comforting pastries, and a sweet treat to wrap it all up. I won’t give away every stop—you’ll have to join the tour to taste it all yourself—but trust me, it’s a feast of both flavors and stories. This tour fed more than just my stomach—it deepened my connection to a neighborhood I thought I already knew. Melissa brings history to life in the most delicious way. I share local foodie finds and cultural gems at @foxyappetite on Instagram and @foxy.appetite on TikTok—and this one absolutely earned a spot!

AFTERNOON TEA This tour was a gift for my best friend's Birthday and it was absolutely outstanding and way beyond anything I had expected! Melissa is an amazing guide and helped us discover many new locations which we would for sure enjoy many more times in the future. All the places we have visited were extraordinary and we really enjoyed learning about the story behind each location (even met with the owners). Melissa also taught us about Montreal's history in-between the locations we were visiting and the whole tour felt like a little adventure as we walked through areas we've never been before (we are from Montreal too). The communication was super fast and the customer service was extremely good. We now plan on experiencing all of the remaining tours as Melissa's company was highly enjoyable and we can't wait to learn more about our city. Thank you!

Excellent tour guide, with extensive knowledge of the city's history, but also culinary details and culture. This food tour isn't just about food, it's about Chinatown's culture and history first, with food to pair with this information. It's a great mix should you like both walking tours and food tours. There is a good quantity of food, in 3 main sit-down locations + a few bites while walking, but it's mainly in the second part of the tour, the first is mainly a historical/cultural walking tour. Super happy!

Absolute favorite part of our trip to Montreal. Melissa is so knowledgable about not only food, but the history of the city too. We did the Jewish Food Tour and it was fabulous. She weaves lots of interesting tidbits about Montreal and its people into the many (and I do mean many) bites of food you get on this tour. I can't wait to go back and try another one! Thanks Melissa!

This is my second experience doing a walking tour with Melissa of Tours de la Table. I cannot endorse her highly enough. Her tours are fascinating, peppered with history, science, and culture as well as tons of delicious food. I had the pleasure of doing her Jewish foods tour last year, and yesterday I did her Tea tasting tour. I cannot wait for my next trip to Montreal to try another of her tours. I've done walking/food tours all around the world and I can sincerely state that Melissa is the best guide I've ever had. And a special shout out for her kindness and empathy in engaging my mother who suffers from dementia.

Posting this very late (sorry Melissa!) but still with a lot of enthusiasm! I surprised my girlfriend with a vegan gastronomic bike tour of Montreal two months ago, and it was a massive hit. She LOVED it, and so did I. Moreover, Melissa and co. went above and beyond to include extra locations on the tour that I had asked about prior. Tour guides extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. 10/10 experience, definitely worth the money. 5 meals, bike rental, and a 6 hour tour of Montreal, all for $150 per person? Yes please!! Anyway, highly recommend. Round Table Tours is a great organization, and Melissa is a great guide. Thanks again guys! See you next summer!
