Austin’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings, Fall 2025 | Eater Austin

"Chef Amir Hajimaleki has been teasing Persian restaurant Roya with pop-ups since 2018, but now the restaurant finally has a home in the former Shortie’s Pizza + Grinders in North Shoal Creek. Chef Hajimaleki, who came to the U.S. from Iran at a young age, started Roya to explore his roots. The menu will rotate seasonally with some mainstays like the royal egg (a savory egg custard, caspian osetra caviar, labneh, and chive blossom), short rib ghormeh sabzi, kabobs, and kashk eh bademjan (eggplant dip), plus desserts from Dennis Van, Hajimaleki’s culinary partner who handles desserts for all of their restaurants. Roya’s full bar will feature drinks like an albaloo (sour cherry) margarita and a turmeric honey-infused whiskey sour, plus a wine list anchored in the Middle East region. The restaurant’s decor will incorporate Persian art like rugs, intricate paintings, and tile work, with the help of Shiraz Garden, a venue in Bastrop that Hajimaleki is also taking over with the hopes of eventually turning it into a Persian cultural center." - Erin Russell

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We visited Royâ, a Middle Eastern restaurant, with my partner, brother, sister and her partner. When booking, we paid a £10 per head deposit, which wasn’t an issue at all. On arrival we were seated promptly and given menus, although we did have to ask separately for the banquet menu. We ordered drinks and were offered table water, then shared mixed dips to start along with an extra bagel bread. The starters were sufficient for around 3–4 people — we stretched it to 5, which was a bit tight but still enjoyable. For mains, we ordered the mixed grill for four and a lamb chops main, adding an extra chop so each of us could have one. There was plenty of food for all five of us and the quality was excellent. For dessert, we shared three dishes — two baklava ice cream sandwiches and one Dubai ball — all absolutely delicious. We also ordered a large pot of mint tea to share, which was beautifully presented and a lovely way to end the meal. Pros: • Warm, modern atmosphere • A modern take on a variety of Middle Eastern dishes • Exceptional food quality • Meat cooked to perfection • Reasonable pricing for the quality of ingredients Cons: • It would have been nice if the menu was explained a little more, perhaps with some background on the dishes • At times it was slightly difficult to get the attention of the servers My partner and I are from London and wanted a nice dinner out with our family — Royâ provided the perfect setting and something a little different. Everyone left very satisfied and we’ll definitely be returning.

Well done Roya. One of the best meals I had all year. Outstanding. Nestled downstairs beside a roaring fire we were dutifully served by really friendly, knowledgeable staff. The decor is sophisticated, not too cluttered and nicely lit. Some acoustic issues aside the vibe was warm and inviting. The menu has some nice, simple Middle Eastern inspired options and lots of variety in meat and veg dishes. Opt for smaller sharing plates or more substantial mains. We went for the kebab sharing plate and it was immense. The date and apple salad was both enormous and genuinely delightful. A side of potatoes, rice, breads, sauces all really well put together. All in all a really lovely dining experience. Uncomplicated but flavourful dishes and fairly priced. Really looking forward to going back.

We visited Roya Café for my wife’s birthday lunch, and overall it was a really nice experience. The ambience was fantastic—warm, stylish, and perfect for a special occasion. The service was also genuinely good, with the staff being friendly and attentive throughout our visit. We ordered Turkish Hummus, Spicy Chicken Tawook, Garlic Naan, and the Very Spicy Fattoush. I personally loved the food; everything was flavourful and well-presented. The Chicken Tawook had a great spice level, the hummus was creamy, and the Very Spicy Fattoush definitely lived up to its name. However, my wife didn’t enjoy the dishes as much, so it was a mixed experience in terms of taste. There’s paid parking nearby, which is convenient if you’re driving. Overall, Roya Café has a great atmosphere and friendly service, and while the food suited my taste, it may not be for everyone. Still, it made for a pleasant birthday lunch.

If I could give 100000 stars I would!! We went to Roya for their afternoon tea and it was absolutely incredible!!! We loved the twist on a traditional tea and enjoyed the flavors, freshness, and attentive staff! It was so loved, we ordered take away a few days later to try some more of their menu. Highly recommend the Turkish cigars and the dips with naan!! I wish I could take this restaurant home with me!! The ambiance is also so perfect. The space is amazingly decorated and this was definitely a trip highlight for sure!! Do not sleep on this place!!

The portions are HUGE! It was our first time here and we didn't quite know what to expect so we asked the waitress, who recommended about 3 plates per person. So we got a dipping platter, which was a large piece of bread with 4 big dips, 3 plates which were also big, and 2 deserts which was really where we just ended up laughing in disbelief - the hazelnut hummus was 7 slices of bread + a full plate of some hazelnut cream. Having huge portions is great, but please don't suggest people get so much food as it's a waste and we ended felling incredibly full for the rest of the day even though we couldn't finish all of it. Regardless, the food and drink were great, and although pricy, considering the huge amount of food we got, it was fair. We'll come back, but we'll have about half of the food we got this time.

We went to Roya as part of an after work dinner with colleagues. The atmosphere was fantastic, the decor is quite modern and moody (dark greens and ambient lighting). We ordered a few things for the table including the Turkish Cigars and Shawarma Croquettes which were absolutely delicious and had a kebab from the grill each. I had the Koubideh Kebab which came with rice - it was INCREDIBLE. So succulent and tasty! Will definitely come back with my partner.

I was not expecting my first lunch in Scotland to be one of my favorite meals I’ve ever had! Everything was so fresh, flavored, and cooked perfectly. My server was such a sweetie. Ambiance is awesome and it’s so refreshing to have mocktails that are actually good and not just juice.
