Kerbey Lane Cafe’s Queso Recipe Crashed on the Moon | Eater Austin

"A Texas-based specialty grocery opened its first San Antonio location at 122 East Houston Street, bringing the same mix of retail and prepared-food offerings found elsewhere in the chain—wines, ice cream, candy—along with coffee and grab-and-go items like sandwiches. This marks the company's ninth overall location, adding to stores across Austin and two existing in Dallas." - Nadia Chaudhury

I love this model for an eatery/grocery. It reminds me of Billie’s Grocery, a place we enjoy in KC. It was perfect for a low key lunch while also providing some great snacks and drinks to load up on to get us through the rest of our day. Great selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks plus so many snack and food options. They’ve really got you covered! The sandwich was DELICIOUS. I went with the veggie grilled cheese and it was cooked beautifully and so flavorful. Definitely hit the spot. The staff was very nice and the interior is very chill and inviting. We really enjoyed it.

One of my main priorities in life whenever I travel is to find the nearest convenience store (or Costco/Sam's Club) to stock up on massive amounts of water - it's just that important to me. Although, I seemed to have missed the mark in my recent trip to San Antonio because I didn't get water prior to checking into my hotel; therefore, I was delinquent and made it a high priority afterwards. My family and I stumbled across Royal Blue Grocery (RBG) after we finished our dinner down the road and I was shocked to see a quaint, yet cute/little store nestled in the middle of downtown. When we walked in, I quickly noticed a coffee bar which I wanted to try but couldn't because I was full from dinner. So instead, I just took the direct path to the refrigerator section and picked out several bottles of water. The girl working wasn't as friendly as some of the other employees I've encountered while visiting this city, but she was still efficient at her job. In fact, normally when you walk into a small store, it's typical that someone would greet you upon walking in, but that didn't occur here...or perhaps my expectations are too high these days. Oh well, definitely not a show-stopper. The store had a lot of items in there, although, I cannot validate if they will have what you're looking for. Fortunately for customers, there are other options down the road if RBG doesn't have what you need. This store also sells alcoholic beverages as well if you're shopping around for it - although, it's not a huge selection...it's something nonetheless. Overall, I recommend stopping here - they sold water so I was a happy camper.

I was in San Antonio attending a work conference at the Convention Center. I always make a point to start my mornings at local coffee shops when out of town. Royal Blue Grocery is located in the Savoy building in downtown San Antonio. Founded in Austin, Royal Blue Grocery is a modern urban grocery whose offerings are responsive to the community it serves. It features Stumptown Coffee Roasters and East Side Pies in its coffee bar/deli and locally sourced, unique grocery, convenience, and gourmet grab-and-go products. Its hot sandwiches are freshly prepared, and the San Antonio store has an impressive wine selection. Royal Blue Grocery is not your typical bodega and has a cozy, inviting feel with plenty of natural light. Limited seating is available both inside and outside the store, but all seats are great for people-watching. Customer service is very solid and definitely more coffee shop-like than corner store. The coffee was great, and I plan to try their prepared items during my next trip to San Antonio.

My wife and I got back to our hotel a little late last night, so we thrilled to stumble across Royal Blue. It was just a couple minute walk from the Holiday Inn so it is very convenient. We were first greeted by two gentlemen out front, drinking some beers (super nice guys, one of them was wearing an Eagles jersey so there is obviously something going on with him, but both were welcoming and I'm sure had absolutely nothing to do with RBG). The girl working also greeted us, although not as heartily as the gentlemen out front. The place has got a little bit of everything and the atmosphere is pretty cool. Above average convenience store with a coffee shop vibe.

Google
Ambiance feels like a cute little shop in the Hamptons with quality goods. We really enjoyed our veggie grilled cheese & Cuban hot sandwhiches. The focaccia was soft and warm and the flavor was on point. We sat outside and people watched on the patio with two adult beverages.

Google
Awesome spot! Picture a new age bodega that has hot food, beer & wine, coffee shop and toiletries you might of forgot at home. Really nice staff. Great experience all around.

Google
Love this spot the barista's are very friendly as well as thoughtful they have a great selection on IPA and I believe the only place that carries them downtown. The pizza is delicious price is reasonable as well. I feel like it's a ritual after work to travel downtown just for the great vibes and atmosphere.

Google
Royal Blue Grocery is a compact specialty market and cafe that has a great selection of beverages and specialty food items. The store is well lit spacious and has a nice wine, beer and other beverages section,. They also serve coffee, yes and light food choices. I was happy to see that they also have probiotic beverages including kombucha which keeps me healthy. A great store to have in the downtown area for San Antonio.

Yelp
Such a cute little grocery store / coffee spot right in the middle of downtown. The vibe is super nice with shelves full of snacks and drinks. I got the Cuban sandwich and a vanilla matcha and wow that Cuban was honestly one of the best I've ever had. The matcha was also really good way better than I expected. Overall, super satisfied with everything and the prices were pretty average too which surprised me since it's downtown. Definitely a spot I'd come back to.

Yelp
Convient if you're downtown to get stuff & you wanna be bougie. Because yeah the prices! Well, it is downtown & you are in America. See, I really judge places like this HARD in comparison against back home in Germany or The Netherlands where it's not necessary to gouge people that just need to run to the store & grab snacks. Because there are stores all over European cities & they do not have $8 chicken salad, or $3 snack bags of chips, or $4 bottles of water - again because you're downtown. I just cannot wrap my head around the absolute audacity of this capitalist behavior in America sometimes. Maybe it's other stuff weighing down right now. But, it is a cute little expensive Bodega. I did find some Cheetos I'd been looking for (the $3 bag), and the tarragon chicken salad was (from Austin) was tasty (& $8), then I got a little packet of mini bread to eat the salad with & they cost $2.79. Which I was fine with because I was actually surprised they had them. The Bodega has a good selection of wines & a ridiculous selection of waters - seriously go look! It's a nice little place. The employees are very helpful & kind. I got a brown sugar chai, & man was it really really good! Not bad for the price either. Take a look at their sandwiches as well, they looked good. If you have a per diem, stop in - it's a cute place to drop an easy $25 on snacks!

Yelp
The Royal Blue Grocery is a very cute and small cafe + grocery that carries all of your snacking needs. As the name states, it is also grocery store, so you can pick up milk, eggs, and any other item you need. There are a few seats in the front of the store and some more outside. The interior is very inviting; they have shelves that sell store merch and other items from other local stores and creators. The workers looked cool, and were very nice and helpful! The vibe was very relaxed too. I have been here once before, I got the veggie melt last time as well. This time around, I came here with my sister and mom, so we all got a veggie melt and a drink. My mother got an iced coffee, my sister got a Naked mango smoothie, and I got a Martinelli's apple juice. We added 2 pumps of vanilla syrup and half-and-half to the iced coffee, which my mom said tasted good. The veggie melt was amazing as usual! They make the sandwiches in front of you, so that was pretty cool too. I am not entirely sure what goes into that sandwich, but it is so good! It's not heavy, there's a lot of filling, and it comes with a dipping sauce that makes it 100x tastier! I don't know what type of seasonings are in the sandwich, but adding the spicy dipping sauce makes it taste like a really good margherita pizza. Overall, I love this grocery, their veggie melt, and the vibe!

Yelp
Luvvv this place. In town for a conference and it's super close to my hotel, was looking for a later night snack/drink. They have a large variety of items, and even fresh coffee/tea drinks & hot food. They have BANANA MATCHA and it is genuinely the best matcha I have ever had. I've gone every day for a little something just because the selection is so great. Also grabbed a hot sandwich - the Cuban as recommended by one of the employees and it was delish. Cute small space that is utilized well! Will plan to come every day until I head home, highly recommend!

Yelp
I love RBG! It's a great little sanctuary from the grimy hot streets of downtown SA to take a break, get a snack / drink / meal. I'll usually walk in for a slice of (WonderSlice Bianca!) pizza and check out the cute gifts or muse over the varieties of candies & chocolates they offer. Everyone is friendly and it doesn't take long to get helped. The lunch hour can be a little busy, but I think it's one of the best quick and tasty options for the area.

Aura N.

Yelp
Had the cubano sandwich and it was pretty tasty, good size and reasonably priced. Service was nice and pleasant.

Yelp
This is a cozy shop with lots of options if you're visiting and need a few things. With drinks, premade snacks/meals, grocery type items, and coffee, it's fun to look through and explore! There is an large upcharge for things that would normally be decently priced like granola bars, pantry items, and frozen meals, but if you want something quick then it's convenient. I also ordered a latte which was delicious, so definitely stop by for some snacks and little convenience items!

Dawn M.

Yelp
This place is a lifesaver if you're staying downtown and need some tasty coffee or snacks. We go here often and the cappuccino is top notch. They also have a good wine selection and snacks if you are a snacky type person but don't want to eat the worst possible foodstuffs. It's good to have something other than your average convenience store that has better quality snacks and the coffee soars. Also a great aesthetic and concept, and the staff are attentive. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Came to get a slice of pizza but they were out of the one I wanted. Wah waaaaaah... But the cashier was super cool and explained that they had gotten slammed. I will be back to try again...
google avatar

Yelp
My decision between a two-star and three star review here was one of the toughest. Ultimately, they earned the third star because the place itself - quaint, airy, bright, is worth a visit. Cute spot. Unfortunately, I was otherwise disappointed. For MONTHS around my downtown office, I've heard about this place and their awesome sandwiches. Finally checked it out for lunch yesterday with a friend who's not normally downtown. They were "out" of HALF THEIR SANDWICH MENU. I settled for a tuna melt, but that was not nearly close to the top of my choice list. It was fine...whatever...but it just couldn't outweigh the ridiculousness of being out of half the listed items. Also, wasn't a huge fan they charged my friend for the refill on his hibiscus tea. Service was friendly yet kind of cold, but that's understandable given it borders less on restaurant and more on convenience store. They're just trying to "check people out".

Yelp
Give credit where its due!! Royal Blue Grocery was the choice for a quick lunch nothing heavy will keep it light till dinner time, so four sandwiches asked to be cut in fourths so as to give everyone a choice and a taste, The Italian, The Cuban, The Veggie and The Texas Hold em!!! all wonderful and great tasting thank you so much for the lovley ladies for being courteous.... loved the country charm feeling of the place found everything we need seems to have an interesting wine selection, but next time ... we'll be back fore sure!!!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this gem and WOW. Ordered a veggie grilled cheese and bought some chia pudding and I cannot stress how amazing they both were. Will definitely be back! Cute shop with all the essentials + great food
google avatar

Carree W.

Yelp
Decided to go during my lunch break - ordered the Italian sandwich and it was so good! They use focaccia bread which is one of my fave! Service was great and ladies working were nice. Seating was not a lot but they do have a small grocery inside which I thought was pretty neat.

Yelp
After seeing a show around the corner we decided to hop into Royal Blue Grocery to grab a few late night snacks before heading back to our hotel. There is something for everyone here so be sure to come in and browse. One thing I loved about this spot is the local San Antonio gifts, stickers, cups/mugs, and mementos they have here. You will definitely find some cute souvenirs here too so don't discredit this spot if you are looking for some unique and local gifts to remember your time in San Antonio. Also I noticed the small patio outside which is perfect spot for some light working, writing, or just people watching. Next time I am in the area I might end up ordering a panini or a Rueben sandwich. Their menu looks tasty AF!
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
Cool place cool atmosphere with helpful people. Quick easy and a walk from the Travis building. I went twice in the tree days I was in San Antonio.
google avatar

Brookie D.

Yelp
Loved their panini! If you're downtown in search for a quick bite to eat, come here! Only issue is they were out of a few sandwiches.
google avatar

Lois C.

Yelp
Cute little grocery right across from the Embassy Suites was a bonus during our stay. Nice selection of fresh foods, baked goods, beverages & snack foods. Charcuterie offerings, humus, snack bars and everyone seems happy and friendly at the counter. Prices weren't bad at all, particularly for a downtown shop in the tourist area. We had some chicken salad, crackers, a sandwich, some iced teas, water, etc and were happy with all our selections. They have some cute gift offerings as well. Also a pretty good selection of booze, I think. Not being a drinker I can't really say for sure but it looked to be a good selection of craft beers, wines and I think other alcohol as well.
google avatar

Peggy D.

Yelp
Waited a bit longer for the coffee than I would have liked. But this coffee beats hotel crap or even nearby Starbucks. Lots of snacks and treats here too.
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
Royal blue is that place! Cozy vibes, very basic food options but they slap. My fav is the chips, chipotle chicken Sandwhich and heywell drink. The service is good. The matcha and latte are good as well. Low key you just can't go wrong stopping by it's good!
google avatar

Jaimie T.

Yelp
Open till midnight. Offers fresh and delicious handcrafted coffee with a full barista. Inside you will find a mini grocery store that also sells wine, beer and essentials. Everything in here is carefully chosen as the best quality and very fair prices too!

James W.

Yelp
This is a very clean, nice, organized with good selection Little expensive but understandable given area
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
We discovered this place when we walked pass by. An open and modern layout for your everyday needs. It changed my view of traditional grocery store. Lots of merchandise were from local sources and ensure the freshness. I got some souvenirs and a bottle of wine so we can enjoy later. Some outside seating was available too. The price was a little higher but the quality seemed better too. A small store made your life easier.
google avatar

Vernon B.

Yelp
Nothing like the local grocery to get your food fix on. The service and setting brings me back to the corner grocery store I remember as a child. What a great find and in greatly needed area. Glad I found them because they are indeed a life saver especially ad those late into the evening hours -- and right within walking distance.
google avatar

Marissa A.

Yelp
I came across this place while walking to another establishment and wow this place is cute & have reasonable prices. What they offer Barista Hot foods Cold beverages Snack Wine Grocery items They also have merch and other nicknacks for sell
google avatar

Amol K.

Yelp
Walked by this place and had to go in and give it a try. Cool place. A small sundry shop with good quality products on the shelf. Has an espresso bar and also a wide section of wines and craft beers. Could easily see this as a good place to do you're own wine and cheese thing in the evening. That being said I ordered an almond milk cortado and it was good. The temperature was nice and hot which I prefer. I'd come back again. Their signature seems to be the breakfast tacos to go - maybe next time.

David F.

Yelp
The coffee here is great you have to know how to order Or hope that a helpful employee is there. The grocery store has essentially everything a convenience store need from batteries to advil to salsa

Matthew C.

Yelp
Great little spot for a quick breakfast and a cortado, fun baked treats or a cold drink.

Elizabeth C.

Yelp
Wow. I'm surprised how well this place has it stocked. Gluten free, dairy free, vegan etc. items, you find healthy snacks. I mean the clean healthy stuff. Five stars for sure!
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
Great espresso and coffee, convenient locations and fast for downtown San Antonio when you don't want to wait at the coffee shops
google avatar

Judy K.

Yelp
Such a cute corner grocery! Every time I'm in San Antonio, I make this a must stop! Love the vibe here.
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
Walking distance from hotels, find a coffee bar, beer and wine, prepared foods and snacks. Sodas and bottled water is cheaper than the other convenience stores in the area. There are a few outside tables to enjoy what you've gathered to snack on.

Stevie F.

Yelp
This place was super convenient and the selection was great. It was definitely a nice place for a quick meal and a beer. Enjoy!
google avatar

Kit F.

Yelp
Amazing little downtown find that has everything you need or want. Local foodstuffs, prepared foods, and even household goods.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
We got back late from the water park and needed chocolate milk for the baby. Glad they were open at 9pm since CVS and Walgreens were closed. Didn't like that the girl at the register was eyeing me like a criminal. Felt uncomfortable.
google avatar

Gin H.

Yelp
Clean, friendly, and a great stop to pick up a quick sandwich or breakfast. Loved looking around to see all the different items they carry. I grabbed matcha latte and a sandwich a couple times while staying at Hotel Valencia. I wished we had cute little places by me like this!
google avatar

Joe N.

Yelp
Cool little place. Sandwich was great and it's also a small convenience store and espresso stand. Had the Rueben which came with slaw not sauer kraut which is unusual but I liked it better anyway. The only thing that would have brought it to five stars is the limited inventory. Most of the food was - I don't know - "granola hippie" type stuff. Lots of organic and meatless selections but not a huge variety. They have plenty of room so they could certainly add some stuff. Good example was no larger bottles of juice. But not a deal breaker - very nice place, great coffee and food and nice staff. Definitely would return.
google avatar

Yelp
In town visiting my bff who just moved to San Antonio. After days upon days of eating some amazing Mexican food (hellooooo queso), I definitely needed a break from giant platters of meat and cheese and tortillas. We came in for coffee -- their iced latte was delicious. They have a good selection of bodega-type products and pre-packaged food, but they also make the most DELICIOUS sandwiches. They were so good we got them again the next night LOL probably blasphemous in the land of great Mexican eats but it was too good not to have one more time before flying back east. Definitely stop in and take a look around - guaranteed they will have something you like/need! Great beer/wine selection too if you're looking for a quick stop. Store itself is super cute and clean and I love how spacious it is. There are a couple cute counter seats by the window and a few outdoor seating areas where you can sit and have your coffee or food or whatever. Overall a great local place!
google avatar

Courtenay O.

Yelp
Unique & friendly place to grab a bite to eat or something to drink. Amazing selection and variety of snacks, sandwiches, beers, and wines. Not cheap, but not overly expensive. An unassuming facade, with a classy interior. Once you get what you want, sit outside to watch the world go by, or stay inside to be cool on a hot day. By the way, they have two clean, well stocked unisex bathrooms in the back. Ask for the key to use one.
google avatar

Katherine S.

Yelp
This is the place that has a little bit of everything that is QUALITY! We grabbed some salads, a grill cheese (yummy) and some groceries. The prices were great and the staff is personable. Thank you !!! We will be back on our next trip!!! The only thing I would add are sets of paper plates and/or bowls for sale. Maybe like a pack of 10. I think 5 of each would be great! It makes warming up food or just feeding the family easier!! Thanks again for everything!!!
google avatar

Jacquie G.

Yelp
Great coffee, warm & kind baristas, and interesting selection of food & drink. Will be going back tomorrow!
google avatar

Katherine M.

Yelp
Everyone who works here is truly lovely. They're quick to assist you, and they make your drinks and food really quickly. I love coming in for their mochas in the morning (even though I live closer to the Starbucks). They also have a lot of cute items to buy: Andy Warhol-inspired earrings, non-toxic nail polish, those little jars filled with delicious dry add-ons (if that makes sense) to which you just have to add alcohol to make a cocktail. They really do have it all. Select shelved items, and even a few loose fruits and vegetables to give full credit to the "grocery" part of their name.
google avatar

Emma A.

Yelp
I really like this grocery store! It has a fun cool aesthetic. The coffee is delicious but my iced matcha latte was really sweet. Not sure if they added sugar of if it was in the tea itself. The store itself is really convenient right across the street from our hotel. It has everything you need from coffee to earring. I would definitely recommend this place
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
I loved this city shop! They had some eclectic grocery offerings along with common staples. Their staff was friendly and accommodating all while practicing safe social distance protocols!
google avatar

Mariel Jeilene F.

Yelp
Really cute modern & urban grocery store :) I go here a lot for lunch and their sandwiches are very good
google avatar

Vern G.

Yelp
Went to this cute grocery/ cafe for lunch. They really have a number of items from wine to salads. I decided to try their hot sandwiches. We tried the Reuben and then Cuban-- both were really good. My favorite will have to be the Reuben. I also liked the sauce they give you on the side spicy like chipotle. I will go back to try their pizza yum.

Yelp
Honestly Royal Blue Grocery is my favorite place. It doesn't matter if you need a quick bite, coconut water, kombucha, coffee, snack or even a few items for the pantry Royal Blue has you covered! Pro tips: -the curry tofu is gluten free and vegetarian is my absolute favorite thing. I've found myself looking for this in the cold case a few too many times and it's gobbled up. -the veggie grilled cheese is incredible. Whatever dipping sauce they give to you will rock your world. I can't remember if they have gluten free bread, but if they do I'll be sure to get this again next time!!

Claire H.

Yelp
Fun little late-night coffee spot! I got a chocolate mint blended espresso drink, and it was excellent. Friendly service and open until midnight. Can't beat that. Will definitely keep this place in mind next time I come back through San Antonio.
