12 Delicious Destinations for Soulful African Cuisines in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Airport Royal Cuisine serves traditional foods from across Ghana. Try waakye, a mixture of rice and beans, which are served with garri (grated cassava) and spaghetti with a choice of goat or fish. Another popular item is red-red, beans cooked with plantains and palm oil—the reddish palm oil gives the dish its name. The red-red here is served with eggs and fish." - Fiona Chandra

The food was amazing and the portions were large!! My wife and I loved the food! It was cooked fresh and hot!

Max Asante

Google
The atmosphere was really amazing and welcoming the very moment I got there, Aside the fact that the food(jollof) I ordered took a bit longer than I expected the wait was definitely worth it. Definitely a an amazing place to experience

mercy owusua

Google
Absolutely delicious!! We're visiting the area and decided to stop here for a meal and I'm so glad we did! The waakye is flavor packed. The goat meat was tender and delicious.. The shito has a nice hot kick to it.. TZ was also on point!

Google
I went there 4 goat meat and jollof rice and what I got was nasty beef with lots of fat because he messed up my order. So I ordered goat meat to go with no meat egosi...he messed up again and put my meat in the egosi. Got home and discovered he gave me beef fat and not goat meat like I ordered. Nice decor. The rice was good. But it took so long to service our food. And if you order goat meat they won't give it to you! So disappointed!

Google
My first time here I was in the area so why not. I have to say the food was authentic, flavorful and plentiful. Both Jane and Beatrice were inviting and professional. Wouldn't mind visiting again when in town. Thank You Came again on 10/31/2024 Clean establishment, fair prices, quality food, good portions and attentive staff. I personally could have used more spice in my soup. But I understand they accommodate to the multitude. Mike- smile more 😁

Google
Delicious food with a true taste of Ghana. The staff were so welcoming and friendly.

Google
Meat and fish smelled stale and rotten! Bought food worth $56 and even tipped 15% and food ended up tasting super bad and tasteless! Never going back there to spend my money! No wonder there was nobody in the restaurant. If I could give them no star I would have gladly done so!

Google
I would give five start 1million times. It’s my first time having African cuisine, and the owner is nothing short of amazing. They carry integrity very well, and the prices are damn reasonable. I drove all the way from Lancaster and it was definitely worth the drive. I tried the okra soup with goat mean, and omg!! Omg!!! Amazing. Thanks so much for not making me feel crazy for not understanding the history of African cuisine, I can’t make this up, and they definitely needs more exposure, more blessing to your buisness.

Yelp
Airport Royal Cuisine was my introduction to Ghanaian cuisine, and it was a solid one! My friends and I ordered some typical dishes, including jollof rice with goat, fufu with light soup, and red red (fried plantains and beans). It took a while to get our food, but as the dishes were cooked to order, we didn't mind. The verdict: -- Jollof rice with goat: the goat was decently tender and the jollof rice was nice and chewy, with a spicy kick to it! The more you eat it, the more the heat builds. -- Fufu with light soup: it was my first time trying fufu, and I liked it! Sort of reminded me of a "chewier" mashed potato, and it was a great vessel to dip into the light soup. The light soup was flavorful, but SPICY; it was definitely not light! Chicken inside was tasty and fall-off-the-bone tender. -- Red red: the least-spiciest dish of the trio, and while I enjoyed the crispy, fried, and sweet plantains, the beans were okay, but it wasn't to my taste. Not bad, but not my favorite. Overall, a nice taste of Ghanaian food at Airport Royal Cuisine. Service was nice and courteous. Ghanaian cuisine is certainly flavorful, but beware the spice!!

Yelp
First of all, if you haven't eaten here yet idk what you're doing!! The food is phenomenal and the owner/chefs etc are all so nice. You really get a sense of community when you enter. I will 100% be back --and I'm bringing friends lol!

Yelp
I had gotten a gift certificate from Restaurant.com for Airport Royal Cuisine, and decided to try it out before a concert at nearby YouTube Theater. The restaurant is located in a strip mall with a small parking lot. The exterior and interior looked quite nice and spacious, though the menu posted on the wall above the registers was quite bare. The employee told me that they no longer participate in Restaurant.com, so my certificate was not valid, but I decided to stay anyway as I had never tried Ghanaian food before. Service was polite. I ended up ordering the okra stew and the fried fish platter. The okra stew had some organ meats (I believe liver, tripe, and intestine) and was very flavorful, served with a ball of fufu. I have only had fufu a few other times in Nigerian food. The fried fish dish was crispy and served with a large portion of fried plantains plus beans. Portions were large and everything was tasty. Prices were fair. Overall, glad I tried something new and different!

Yelp
The food here is delicious. My favorite thing to order here is the jollof rice with goat meat. The service is great & I take trips here when I want some good jollof rice in the city of LA

Yelp
After taking a wonderful vacation to Ghana, I was in dire need of some great Ghanaian food in Los Angeles. Lo and behold, Airport royal cuisine happens to be right around the corner from my house. The place was quaint and in the cut. A little ghetto, but all that means is the food is going to be seasoned. Once I arrived, I was greeted by some employees who I assume were from Ghana. They gave me that look like "this American just got back from Ghana and now wants what we have." They were right. But was the food gonna to be fire? I ordered the peanut butter stew with beef. I prefer fish, but not a big fan of tilapia. Once the food arrived the smell immediately took me back Accra. The taste, amazing.! The service was pretty good but at the same time they understood I didn't really want to be bothered or interrupted from my celebration of succulence. I've since visited about four times. With each visit, I noticed subtle improvements to the facility. This is definitely my go to spot when I need some food catered by the spirit of my ancestors. If you want some authentic Ghanaian food, make sure you visit before they run out of parking.

Yelp
The best Ghanaian food on the West Coast. Takes like food back home. Highly recommend the Jallof and chicken. Spinach, fish and yams are amazing. Red Red is also amazing

Yelp
Only went once so I have to back to get a better feel for it. I got groundnut soup and also a jollof rice combo. The food was decent and tasty overall. The rice was good but didn't seem fresh and was a bit dry. But once I rewarmed it was better. I'll have to give it another try.

Yelp
Royal Cuisine is a Ghanaian restaurant next to LAX. It's in the corner of a strip mall and has a large indoor dining space. Jollof Rice: The dish contains tomato paste, onion, ginger, garlic, spices (thyme, curry?), Scotch Bonnet chili peppers, and long-grain rice. The slick orange rice is pleasantly firm - al dente - to stand up to all the flavors. The spice level actually builds up as you eat the rice. You can get it with either chicken or beef. The meat is stewed in a tomato sauce that is sweet, tangy, and a bit smoky. Ordering: Place your order at the counter. Hopefully the chef's list of takeout orders isn't too long. Parking: The strip mall has a large lot.

Yelp
Royal Cuisine Authentic African is by the far the best African restaurant I've been to in LA. The food is very delicious and the options/combinations are endless. The vibe and ambiance complement the quality of the food really well. The service is excellent with, in my experience, the best African chefs around. I've been coming here over the past couple of months and will keep coming back. It's my home away from home regarding authentic Ghanaian food! Check it out and I'm sure you'll reach a similar conclusion. Thanks for bringing authentic Ghanaian and African cuisine to LA!
google avatar

Yelp
Steady the best Ghanaian food I've had in LA county. I can't say enough about the light soup but today I got okra stew for myself and light soup for my friend. I was jealous because I did miss the light soup but the okra stew is actually so good I wouldn't have traded it at alllll. I'd just recommend coming here any time truly I hope it's always around.

Yelp
I used to go to this place all the time when I lived in Inglewood. I decided to revisit it and take a trup down memory lane and also try dining in for the first time as I'd normally just order takeout. The chicken jollof this time around was still pretty good but there was barely any spice there. I can remember coming here numerous times and my mouth would be on fire from the spice but this time it was missing, I don't know if they changed the recipe or if it was just off today but I sure hope it was the latter. The spicy jollof was one of the main selling points in my eyes. But because this is the only time this has happened I'll try to not let it affect my perception too much. My friend got goat soup and fufu. The fufu was really good and went well with the soup, however the goat was really tough to eat. I do recall ordering the goat before and it has always been pretty tough so I will say that it isn't one of their stronger menu options. All in all I'll say that if the chicken jollof is made as it should be, this place has the best jollof in the city in my opinion, it just sucks that today was a little off so I'll just leave it at 3 stars for now.

Yelp
Great and authentic Ghanaian food, I recommend the Red Red or Jollof Rice with chicken if you like your food spicier!
google avatar

Latasha D.

Yelp
I didn't enjoy the food. I had Egusi with chicken. The chicken was like 2 days old. It was tough and dark like leather.
google avatar

Christina O.

Yelp
Originally placing my order went for fine, the guy taking my order super nice. Then a customer said to me you can't bring dogs into the restaurant. I'm a service disabled veteran with service dogs. I had to cancel the order. What a shame.

Yelp
I felt like I was back home again when I tore into my yam with fish plate! Ghana lives in me now and I in it. Ever since I traveled there in 2019 my tastebuds just wouldn't rest until I found the flavor of Ghana again. The search ended when I tried Airport Royal! It was SO good!! My fish was fried and seasoned to perfection. The yam, just as I remembered, a solid balance to even out the spice from the hot sauce and boldness of the shito sauce. I also had plantain on the side which was good as well. It was a very hearty portion to go along with my fish. I personally can't vouch for the service as this was a birthday meal that was ordered, paid for and picked up by my friend. She did tell me though that they did not offer delivery and that for take out, she had to call a lot of times until she was able to get someone on the phone so she could place the order. I will definitely be back to try something else!!

Meeghan S.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. Fish was a little too crispy, but still tasty nonetheless. Spices very good. Use the menu on the counter. There are more options. Also, the menu that says $12 is now $18. It's a lot of food though. They must get a lot of take out because no one was inside and service was ridiculously fast. If you're looking for something different, I would recommend it.

Yelp
Great african food, nice staff. The Food was so good, I am still lost for words. It was an order for pick-up, and I was impress with the menu, so tasty.

Yelp
Very clean, very friendly food looks amazing different could drinks you chose from. But no taste awaste of money will not be coming back

Letrecia A.

Yelp
My jollof rice was the best that I've tasted very flavorful with 2 chicken legs cooked within this rich thick aromatic sauce with a bit of spice. So good. Added to my order was the Banku/Okro/Goat Meat, the goat was very tender, but I wish I said.hold the okra. Myself as a child I never really liked okra, but I did decide to give it a try today for some reason. The taste was cool, but way too much okra for me. You really must love okra to enjoy this dish. Besides that issue I will definitely be back to this establishment because the food is delicious and I was welcomed with a smile unlike some other Nigerian restaurants. Thank you so much for the very warm much appreciated.

Yelp
Stopped by here 3 times on our trip. Everything was authentic and delicious. Our favorite was the red red and fried plantains. Definitely worth trying out. Wished we lived closer!

Yelp
Great authentic Ghanaian food and huge serving...I would definitely recommend this place

Yelp
Great food. I think we go a couple of times a month. The banku and egusi, sooo good. Get the full experience when you eat with your hands.

Yelp
Airport Royal Cuisine was my first time trying Ghanaian food or West African food in general. I'm not too sure how it would differ from East African food, which I had previously at Jaliz Cuisine. The food here was great. I ordered the chicken jollof rice, which had an amazing spice flavor to the rice and tender marinated chicken. I would definitely get that dish again. I also got the red red, which are stewed beans with plantains and fried fish, which was also very tasty. Great combination. I also had the kenkey, which is a Ghanaian tamale like food made out of ground corn. Overall, awesome stuff. The parking at this lot is also very good, so no problems here. I would recommend this place if you haven't tried Ghanaian food before, because it's definitely worth one taste. It's very flavorful and filling. I shot a YouTube episode of my eating experience here, which you can find on my channel, Rockstar Eater.

Yelp
Thank you providing food for Rev Richard Byrd (Meri Ka Ra) Celebration of Life! It was my family's first time trying your food and it left an impression. We look forward to visiting your restaurant and/or ordering from delivery services available to deliver from your restaurant. We had the Kontomire stew (my favorite), red red (2nd favorite), fish, chicken, rice and plantains. I had favorites, however, EVERYTHING was delicious. I could taste the homemade love in every bite. The chicken was moist and well seasoned. The fish was bit over crispy on the outside BUT extremely moist on the inside. Thank you so much Royal Family! Your food was filling and satisfying.

Yelp
This place is a gem. Although I can not compare it to food in Ghana, I really enjoy the fish and goat dishes they make here. The fact that every time I have eaten there, every other costumer has been from West Africa leads me to believe they are doing it right. I met a customer today that was born in Ghana, that travels from Orange Country at least once a week for the food. The reasons for less than 5 stars are the fact that it can be kind of slow sometimes, and I think they could do a better job or orienting the non west africans to the food. A couple signs or sheets of paper explaining the food could go a long way towards helping those of us not from West Africa to better understand what the options are.. and what the traditions are. I am usually pretty adventurous, but I sometimes go out to eat with people that might really enjoy the flavors but would not order something they did not understand.

Yelp
It was my first time having Ghanaian cuisine! Don was a huge help going over the items so I can make the best choice. The Jollog rice with chicken was on point! I also had the article ball soup because why not?! Is was very sticky and yummy all the way! If you enjoy goat that would be a great selection. Lastly my favorite was the Red, Red! It surprised me with the amount of flavor it had, it felt like a party in my mouth, the kind you want to stick around for a while and not leave. Anyways I would recommend to anyone looking for some awesome African/Ghanaian food.

Ashley S.

Yelp
I ordered the Jollof with goat again. I have eaten goat meat before and the goat meat in the sauce doesn't taste like goat meat to me. Instead, it tastes VERY similar to beef... I'm not happy about that. Other than that, the Jollof is fine.

Ash L.

Yelp
This restaurant hit the spot with the authentic Ghanaian cuisine. I was just in Ghana earlier this year, so being able to find a spot in LA that nailed it, was everything I needed. The portions are huge too, so definitely be prepared to share or take some leftovers.
google avatar

Gigi G.

Yelp
I will say if you don't have time to wait--don't order. Food is cool, but very greasy which ended up hurting my stomach but TASTY nonetheless. The restaurant itself is really nice and clean.
google avatar

Oti I.

Yelp
Really great tasting food and friendly staff, truly enjoy all their menu .

Teresa S.

Yelp
I ordered Banku with goat. When I got home I found out it was banku with fish. I distinctly told the lady I did not care for tilapia. Ok I can accept the mistake. However, when I called back the gentleman that answered the phone said we're closed. He let me explain my dilemma and abruptly cut me off. One and DONE. Too many African spots to try.

Joanna V.

Yelp
Terrible place. The manger was so rude. As soon as I walked in he was judging me. As a person of color I found it highly offensive that he was looking at me like I was going to rob the place. Before ordering I went to use the bathroom and he asked me in an aggravated voice 'what do you need'. I told him I just needed to use the bathroom and he told me in a rude voice to get out the place. Never dinning here again.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
This restaurant holds a special place in my heart because it reminds me of home and my mother's cooking. I've had the rice balls (omotuo) with peanut butter soup and chicken. Bomb! The soup has the right amount of spice and flavor. It's not too far off from my mom's. The rice and beans (waakye) and stew with tilapia is great too! The rice is cooked perfectly and the stew is seasoned nicely. The serving sizes are filling and worth the price. I would recommend to anyone looking for quality Ghanaian food. I wish they were closer to central LA but they are worth the drive.
google avatar

Fatinah M.

Yelp
Very nice place and the food is delicious . My first time trying African / Ghanaian food and I'm so happy I did . I'm preparing for my first trip to Africa and the owner was so warm and welcoming and gave me great advice for my trip . I will definetly come back to try other dishes .

Nishad G.

Yelp
The fish with waakye and spicy shito varieties on the side are excellent! I'd order two meals to go at a time
google avatar

Kai M.

Yelp
We came around 30 minutes after opening. We ordered the jollof rice with goat. I wanted to order the fried plantains but the server said it would take at least 45 minutes to prepare, so I passed on it. The goat, while very small portion, was seasoned well, fresh and accompanied the jollof well. The goat was really fatty and the mixed veggies a bit meh. It was a little strange that they had liquid soap at each table, too. Overall, while some good flavors in the rice and meat, I probably would t return.
google avatar

Sabina O.

Yelp
I just moved to LA and I am Ghanaian. I was looking for a great Ghanaian food and yelp helped me. I read the reviews and decided to go myself. The location is in a shopping plaza so you can't miss it. I walked in and the owner was so nice to me. I introduced myself and he also did. We converse for awhile then I ordered the jollof rice and it was amazing. Not everyone can make jollof rice especially to sell. It was good and I got chicken with it. The chicken was seasoned well and had a spicy kick to it which I loved it. I wish I would had got more food to try but it was my first time and I wanted to try it to see how it is first. I think if the jollof was good, then everything else will be amazing. Since I'm in LA now, I will try other food.

Tans S.

Yelp
Meats are not seasoned properly. They gave me big chunks of goat meat with no seasone. I've ordered the yam, jollof, the banku and okra, and omo tuo. If you're real ghanaian you'll not like it to be honest.
google avatar

Benjamin A.

Yelp
Number 1 Ghanaian/African restaurant in the greater Los Angeles area. Excellent customer service
google avatar

Raven R.

Yelp
Wow this place is amazing it's a secret hidden gem in the middle of fast nasty fake everything this is authentic African and American food do you have a variety of going completely authentic African or traditional American hamburger hotdog style it's pretty awesome It's absolutely on point the flavors insane the chicken is moist and it all seems like really good fresh food a little spicy so if you're trying to get on the airplane you might wanna plan ahead
google avatar

Tatum L.

Yelp
This place is amazing. The staff is super nice! We got a bunch of food and loved it all! Having lived in Ghana on and off for years I can tell you this place is LEGIT! Give it a try! You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
Excellent Ghanaian food. Tastes just like in Ghana, in fact tastes home made. I can vouch for okra stew and chicken jollof rice and looking to go back soon!
google avatar

Sharon M.

Yelp
Got the red, red with no fish (vegetarian) and OMG the beans were soooo good. Really want to find out the name so I can try to make it at home. The plantains were amazing of course but the star of the show really is the beans.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are Ghanaian and this is the taste you were brought up with when it comes to Jollof rice, I am sure you will like it. So I had a Nigerian Jollof and this Ghana Jollof side by side, same day. I went to another Nigerian restaurant a few blocks away before I came here. The Jollof here I give it 4/10. I will return to try the Ghanaian cuisine like Kenke, however, never the Jollof. No sentiments. The rice they use is like basmati, it's spicy, not cooked well it was so al dente, and looked more more pale than red. The goat meat was ok, was mixed with sauce will give it 7/10 but size was too small. The people are nice and the place is pretty big. I am just confused as to why they sell "American food" as well in an African restaurant, that killed it for me, a Chinese restaurant will never sell burger, if you don't like full African idea then go to McDonald's period. I will return to try the Ghanaian cuisine let's stick to that. Parking is ample, close to the freeway and LAX. It's a pretty big space too, I hope they can do better because that are in a great location.

Yelp
African Food in Los Angeles! Excellent Ghanian and West African cuisine. We had Fufu and Peanut soup, Banku with Okra Soup, and Chicken Stew with Jollof rice, plantain, and salad. The food was perfectly fresh and the presentation was excellent. Not greasy or too salty at all and beautifully seasoned. Im black american and my ghanian friend took me here with her son. They LOVED the food and thought it was very authentic.

Victor C.

Yelp
Hands down the best food in LA. This place has the best jollof rice and all the food was made fresh to go. I can't wait to go back ! I would have taken a picture but I ate the food too fast and forgot.
google avatar

Jase A.

Yelp
Lukewarm, old and re-heated food. Uninspired and shit food. Maybe they didnt know i was west african and decided to serve me some B.S.?Ordered Jollof Rice w/Chicken and vegetables and within 6 minutes received food that was steaming hot in the middle and lukewarm/cold everywhere else. Received 2 pieces of under-baked slightly pinkish and bland chicken, that tasted like it accidentally fell in a bowl of soap during the cooking process, along with short-grain jollof rice. After 2 bites, I opted to take my food home and salvage it by re-seasoning the chicken and cooking it further in my oven as to not completely have wasted my time driving to Inglewood for this. I still regretted it and decided it made more sense to get Doritos at the gas station mart...What's up with LA and west african spots? I go to Toronto...CANADA of all places (Afro Continental Bar and Grill) and get mouthwatering and proper food, for CHEAPER. Like...Why on earth??! Smh. There is nothing royal about this place.

Yelp
Delicious had Waakye and goat and fish delish reminds me of Gh morning getting waakye
