Best Indian Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This award-winning Indian restaurant has multiple locations throughout San Diego — including Gaslamp, Del Mar, and Miramar. The lunch and Sunday night buffets were popular pre-pandemic, but their generous menu still offers ample share-friendly options for delivery." - Grace Cassidy

Really I think this should be rated higher! We went for the buffet, which apparently now only happens Sunday. We had three lunch specials, and all were great. Mine was perhaps the best lamb vindaloo I have ever had. Recommended!

Google
Delicious food this one is Karahi chiken just be aware in the level of spicy but is wonderfully and nice service (Sergio)

Google
Flavorful paneer vindaloo and best paneer saag. Saag has right amount of creaminess and a lot more flavor than other places. Spice 8/10 is perfect and on par with legit Thai establishments 8/10 spice. Lunch special weekdays only and quite filling.

Sarah M.

Google
Food was so good got the saag chicken, garlic naan, samosas and everything was delicious

Been meaning to try this spot and finally ordered takeout for the first time. Smooth experience with pickup and right on time. The Matter Paneer was surprisingly sweet and really addicting. Would highly recommend. The Dal Tarka and Chettinad Pepper Chicken were also great options as well.

This Indian cuisine is very good for Indian food particularly Punjabi food. The food test & quality is good. The ambience is excellent with outdoor seating. We celebrated a birthday party here & enjoyed it too much.

If you love Indian food than you got to check this spot out! Definitely always scared to try Indian food because it always seems to spicy for me but they give you a scale 1-10 on how spicy you want it !! We started things off with their signature tandoori wings and they were amazing ! My wife got the traditional chicken tikka masala, I had a bite and it was delicious. I got the mango pineapple curry with lamb meat and it was spectacular! I wanted it more !! Over my rice and it just so amazing ! Highly recommend it. We also had some somosa which were yummy. And we finished things off with some mango dessert they had. Definitely coming back here ! Lots of seating and service was great !

Yelp
Fantastic flavors! Meatless is so easy when the food tastes this good. The veggie multi-item appetizer was a great choice. Nice heat when expected. Great flavors that were better the next day!

Yelp
This is a beautiful restaurant located in a strip mall in Del Mar with ample parking. We were so pleasantly surprised by the ambiance of the restaurant, which gives very much a peaceful, classy, fine-dining kind of feel. The restaurant blew us away with the candles and tablecloths, the dim lighting, the exotic decor and the water wall! The service was extremely friendly and accommodating of our party's allergies. We ordered the royal dinner for two which is a great bang for your buck and comes with a small bowl of soup for two, two samosas, a small salad, lamb curry, a chicken tikka masala, and a rice pudding dessert. All the food was delicious and made for a perfect date night out. Do note that the prices are a little bit on the steeper end for Indian food in San Diego otherwise. Would have made for a 11/10 experience except for a small hiccup at the end that honestly made me so upset it really left a sour taste in my mouth! We chose the restaurant specifically because we had the Synergy gift card and found it on their website. We had been trying to find an opportunity to go to a Synergy restaurant forever! Upon entering the restaurant immediately asked if they accepted the gift card and they said yes. When I ordered the Royal Dinner I read the fine print carefully which said "not good with discount cards, carry out, business exchange or large parties" but figured a gift card is just a form of payment so wouldn't be included right? Wrong. They immediately declined the Synergy card. If anyone believes a gift card counts as any of the above please enlighten me... I might be disproportionately salty about this but for someone who works a lot, hasn't been able to eat out super often recently and has really been trying to use the gift card forever, this just felt like a really stingy and slippery move by the restaurant.

Yelp
Ordered take out from here on 1/9/26. The main courses of chicken madras and salmon tikka masala were good. We also ordered a plain and a garlic naan. The plain naan was burnt. We could not eat it. The chef should have just tossed the burnt one and started over. Disappointing to be charged $6 for burnt naan. If you order take out naan from here, be sure to check it before you leave.

Yelp
Loved eating out here !! Great food, good location, plenty of space, very nice and polite servers and great ambience and vibe. I ordered appetizer sampler plate which had samosa and panoramic. Also ordered their tandoori sampler platter which had grilled chicken, lamb kabob, grilled fish and shrimps. It was perfectly marinated well cooked. Don't miss it it was very flavorful and came on a sizzling hot plate. For main course I ordered lamb shank as I heard lot of good reviews about it. It was good but a bit more salty for me. I paired it with keema naan and rice. Keema naan is naan filled with minced lamb and spices. It was too good. For desserts I got ras malai and gajar halwa which was very flavorful. Of course I had mango Lassi for my drinks. Overall great food amd experience. It's a bit pricey place as compared to other Indian restaurants i have been to but as the taste, food, ambience and service was excellent I am ok with it. I will give it a 7 out of 10 on my DVFM* score. Enjoy the food and vibe *Dees value for money score

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants and I've come here numerous times, so it's past time I finally do this review. First this place is extremely nice and clean inside. It has nice big chandeliers, statues, and other pretty decor. There is a restaurant area and a banquet hall area where you can hold events. The food is delicious and I dont think I've ever had a bad meal here. My go to is the chicken tikka masala and the saag. It always tastes fresh and flavorful. They have lunch specials that include an entree, samosa, and Naan bread that you can get any day off the week, and are very reasonable. If you don't order the lunch special it can be a bit pricey, but they also have a happy hour in the early evenings that gives you 30% off your food. The servers all always nice, and willing to answer questions, and the food arrives in a timely manner. I definitely suggest checking it out if you enjoy Indian cuisine. I think it's great for a date night, but also for just eating out with a group of friends.

Yelp
At Royal India you can expect to dine like, well, royalty. The location is in a corner of a shopping center in Del Mar Heights. It's nice, clean, approachable and welcoming. The decor is sort of a modern, trendy take with an obvious Indian influence. Oh and they have an indoor waterfall for good measure. Service was prompt and friendly and our server did an excellent job explaining the menu and offering suggestions when we asked for them. I think I'm going to be full for a week. We had: spicy tandoori wings, paneer naan, coconut pineapple shrimp curry, mango pineapple pineapple salmon curry and because we were already being gluttons, opted for dessert and had gulab jaman (sort of like a rice donut in syrup) and rusmalai (a cheese-based dessert with cream and cardamom, similar to cheesecake). Although all was tasty, we agreed that our favs were the wings, the paneer naan - which I could've honestly just ate for a meal by itself- and the coconut curry shrimp. Royal India also offers up a full menu of wines, beers and cocktails. When in Rome; I ordered a Taj Mahal lager and it paired perfectly with everything. High marks to the staff and chefs for a great evening out. I would 100% go back.

Yelp
Ordered goat biriyani and chicken makhani. Both the meats were undercooked. The biriyani rice and the rice side dish was thick and stiff. So overall really bad food! Never again.

Yelp
My girlfriends and I decided to go to this place for lunch to celebrate a few birthdays. We arrived around 11:30am, and it was pretty empty and quiet. The ambiance was nice, and our large party was seated immediately, and we were given hefty menus. We all decided to try different variations of the lunch special, which was served with soup, salad, samosa, our entree/protein of choice, and the vegetarian entree of the day. Suffice to say, this was a lot of food for a single meal, but we loved that we could try a little of everything. The soup was served in a small bowl, and it was made with moong daal. The salad and vegetarian entree were served in small sauce tins. I opted for the saag paneer as my main entree, and while it was a very generous portion, I found it was a bit salty for my taste. The samosa was also a bit salty. I think that the meal was a good value for the price, and while it was pretty solid, I have had better Indian food.

Yelp
Just had dinner at Royal India. The food has gone way down. The dishes that we ordered were not up to the standard we expected. Both dishes were lacking in taste and were runny. The service was slow and the staff seemed busy handling take out orders. We will be looking for a new place.

Yelp
Royal India is now our go to place for Indian food. We have tried mixed tandoori platter, samosa chaat, keema paratha, butter chicken, lamb shank. Every dish is made fresh and spices can be customized. Mango lassi is a must try. The staff is very friendly and makes you feel like family. The ambiance is great and every corner is so beautifully decorated. Please do pay a visit whenever you want to try Indian food. This is the best indian restaurant in Del mar.

Yelp
Delicious food, great service. Very attentive waitstaff. This is our "go - to" for great Indian food.

Yelp
Spices in curry was great! Spicy level was as expected! Service was prompt! Royal India's lamb biryani has a lot of favorite by adding cumin and fried onions bites. It has good portion of lamb pieces. However, I usually like saffron on biryani rice and a little drier texture. Restaurant has indoor and outdoor seatings and is spacious with nice decoration. Will go back and try other dishes.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the ambiance, the food and service. Everything was very good. The pistachio ice cream was very tasty, with a twist. A must try.

Yelp
Every time we got out to Del Mar we eat at this restaurant! The service is amazing. The waiters are so nice & come to table often checking in on us. They also make some great suggestions. The food is delicious! I love the curry dishes with different levels of spices. We sit outside & enjoy it so much. Some nights they have live entertainment. Highly recommend going here

Yelp
Service is good. Very courteous and friendly servers here. Food is also very delicious. Biryani was not like I expected but kenabs and daal were good.

Yelp
The food, service and atmosphere is incredible! The food has so much flavor! I can't wait to go back! Each dish is a masterpiece of flavor and texture that will transport you to the streets of India! We ordered mango margaritas spicy tandoori wings vegetable pakoras garlic and paneer naan raita (Indian yogurt with cucumbers, grated carrots, potatoes and spices) chicken tikka masala lamb vindaloo

Yelp
Great little lcoation in quiet area of fashion valley. I was on a long bike ride and had to get my fix. Immediately I was welcomed by Angel and he was very pleasant and kind, he gave me the inside scoop on the food. It was great food I only got the basics. Try the naan with hummus, I was pleasantly surprised that they cut it into small shareable pieces a little different but cool from how it is usually presented. Also got Chicken Tikka masala level 5 spicy ( not that hot) and it was glorious. The price is respective to the area you are in and the quality and service is worth what you pay.
google avatar

Adrian B.

Yelp
Been here several times in the past. Service was great! Chicken pakoras were just okay. Have had much better. Samosas were good but need a better dipping sauce like the one Ethiopian restaurants serve with their Samosas. Chicken Tikka Masala was just okay. Palak Paneer was good. Hubby enjoyed his Lamb Shank. Naan stuffed with ground beef was dry. So, it was hit and miss for us.
google avatar

Poonam M.

Yelp
2nd time coming here ordered again the chicken biryani flavor was the same just as good ordered at medium just the right heat for me a good portion size and if you check in, they will give you a free Samosa. They also have a large size banquet hall for a Events

Yelp
As soon as you walk in, you feel an air of peace and tranquility with a little bit of elegance mixed in as you hear the water passing on a little waterfall, and relaxing music in the background. You're welcomed in right at the entrance. There was some available seats when my friend and I showed up so we were seated shortly after arrival. I would recommend the mixed tandoori grill, it has multiple different meats and great for sharing. I also tried the chili ginger masala, so if you like spicy food that tastes good, this is a dish for you. They also have a really good mango lassi! The del Mar location is inside of a large shopping area, and there's plenty of parking.

Yelp
Love this and royalindia_delmar is a lovely family restaurant please come on by, Angel and Sergio are amazing employees whom are so attentive and friendly you will not be disappointed, the naan, the kabab, curries, and mango Lassi is so delicious it was great to see the local foodies meet to break naan (bread) Love love love they can host a huge party as well and things run so smoothly

Satish L.

Yelp

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Recommend the tiki masala and the dal soup. The samosas were a little salty. The service was excellent. Would definitely return.

Yelp
Mediocre. I've had amazing Indian food and this is not it. It was greasy and lacked a depth of flavor.
google avatar

Dung N.

Yelp
My friend invited me here for lunch back in March and we received these complimentary yummy crispy pita bites with a couple of dips to start with. For drinks, I chose a chai iced tea and she got a coconut guava mai tai. The drinks came with pretty umbrellas and I loved how refreshing mine was. We shared the samosa chaat, spicy tandoori wings, the mixed tandoori grill, chicken vindaloo, garlic naan, and onion naan. Everything came out pretty quickly and the presentation of the mixed tandoori grill was on a sizzling hot plate! For dessert, I tried the shahi mango and it was delightful. Everything tasted good to me! The spicy food items wasn't spicy enough for me though. Our server brought out some habanero peppers for me and I accepted the challenge! I don't think it was a good idea to eat it plain because I had a stomachache later on that night haha.

Yelp
Great service and delicious food. What else can you ask for in a restaurant. I tried to eat there once a week because it is so reliably delicious.

Yelp
On my way out of town I decided to stop by and load up on some Indian food. I'm happy I chose this place and the food was great. The Keema was a nice change from classic naan and the Lamb Korma was tender and loaded with flavor. I like spicy food and ordered level 6, but I didn't get any spice from the food. The wings and very distinct and good but don't taste like tendoori. Nonetheless the flavor of everything was really good.

Yelp
Royal India was my first San Diego Indian restaurant experience over two decades ago.  The food here is very good, as is the service.  We always have to have an order of Samosas (4/5 $8 for 2 pc). Restaurant interior is simple, providing a sense of peace and tranquility.  I placed an online order through Yelp for take-away lunch today.  Timing was perfect ... food was ready as I walked in the front door!

Yelp
Delicious Indian food in Del Mar area! Parking Free parking in the lot. Shop Aesthetics/ Cleanliness Clean tables, traditional Indian decor around. A nice water feature at one of the tables and light music playing. Food Some of the stand outs that I had were: Mango Lassi- so refreshing on a hot day, Royal Lettuce Wrap with Paneer- appetizer that was filling it could be a meal on its own, Royal Lamb Malai- rich lamb curry, and the rasmalai dessert. I had never had rasmalai before and it was a unique treat- sweet but not overly sweet! Overall, I would highly recommend Royal India as one of the best Indian restaurants in San Diego!

Yelp
I just can't get enough of this place, @royalindia_delmar I can go over and over and still enjoy their delicious food I just admire how generous, polite and welcoming team they are. the food is always served fresh and full of diverse flavors.

Yelp
On my first night in San Diego, my relatives and I went to get Indian food, a place they frequented. I had no idea where we were going until we arrived LOL. It's located across of Marketplace Grille in the Piazza Carmel in Del Mar. There's a big parking lot with ample stalls. My group and I ordered the Onion Bhaji as an appetizer, Goat Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Palak Paneer (Saag). We also got a starter of this naan? chips, and the sauces on the side were super bomb. The appetizer was something we didn't expect. It was basically like a blooming onion but with a lot of thin, small pieces to dip and eat. Dipping the fried onions in the naan chip sauces were soooo good rather than it being eaten by itself. The goat curry had an interesting flavor. It was really rich with an almost watery base as a curry rather than a rich creamy base that I was used to with Indian curries. The flavor was delicious but there were actually more bones than meat in the dish which I didn't like as we were mainly paying for the meat. The Tikka Masala was my favorite of the three. It had a creamy base with a nice blend of spices. Can never go wrong with this dish! The Paneer Saag was also good but lacked a bit of flavor. It was like eating a spinach dip but without that bang of flavor. Overall, the portions were huge, and the food was pretty good! It was a bit on the "fancier" side as it was a little pricier. There are a lot of different specialty curries that I've never seen like the Smoked Salmon Tikka Malasa or Chicken Tikka White Wine Curry. Would love to try that next time!
google avatar

Natalie L.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and you can't beat the food! We always try different items and can't wait to go back again to try more. Loved the palak paneer!

Yelp
After spending some years in San Diego exploring all of the Indian restaurants throughout the county, Royal India maintains being one of the best. Decor is a vibe! Those curtains, booth fabrics, ornateness on level 100... it's a lil old school but it's clean & well maintained. We recently came in for lunch and every single thing was delicious. Royal India has the BEST tandoori chicken. It's super juicy, flavorful, and I really love it because they skip the silly red food dye. I can eat this chicken weekly! Everything tastes very authentic compared to some of the more Americanized Indian restaurants. They are really great with making things spicy if you want, no flavor is compromised. Service is always very attentive, kind, and accommodating. It's not always easy to find nice restaurants where it's also easy to bring kids, but this place fits the bill.

Joe W.

Yelp
Everything tasted excellent. We had the mango soup, garlic naan, herb baked salmon, mango and pineapple curry with chicken, and a desert called rusmalai which are soft cheese patties cooked in a sweetened creme and pistachios. The fish was so fresh and the sweet fruit really complimented the bold spices so typical of indian food. Cant wait to come back and try more of their menu

Yelp
SoCal Tasting embarked on a culinary voyage to India at Royal India, Del Mar, San Diego. We dove into the signature dishes like the rich and creamy Chicken Makhani, Chilli ginger curry, flavorful Aloo Tikki, Samosa chaat and paired them with the amazing selection of Indian beer and other cocktails. Indulged in the melt-in-your-mouth naans and aromatic Onion Kulcha. Vegetarian options abound, ensuring a delightful experience for all. Must visit for an unforgettable tasting journey! Amazing service and beautiful ambiance.

Yelp
If you are craving Indian food, then you need to check out Roval India @royalindia_delmar in the Del Mar/ Carmel Valley area! Beautiful indoor decor and they also have a nice outdoor patio. I love the indoor watertall! My favorite dishes here are the tikki masala and the Channa Masala Love that you get complimentary chips here with tamarind and mint chutney. Everything here is amazing and beautifully presented! Roval India has locations in Del Mar, Westfield UTC, Gaslamp and Miramar. We tried: ^ BHEL PURI Puffed rice, crushed flour chips, peanuts tossed with tamarind and mint chutneys, garnished with ~ SAMOSAS Two crispy stuffed pastries seasoned with mild spices and deep-fried © CHANNA MASALA Garbanzo beans in a tangy tomato, onion and garlic curry sauce ^ CHICKEN TIKKA KABAB Boneless pieces of chicken breast marinated in yogurt and delicate spices and herbs ~ NAVRATTAN KORMA Nine seasonal vegetables cooked in a curry of cream, cashew paste, nuts, raisins and spices ~ CHICKEN TIKKA MASALA Boneless chicken roasted in a clay oven and finished with a delicious blend of creamed tomato curry and spices ~ SHAHI MANGO Fresh mango pulp with cream

Amazing environment, service, food, and drinks! The food was delicious. I would recommend this as it is very elegant but also has a family friendly environment . I plan to return soon!

Yelp
Food is amazing as always. We ordered our usual butter chicken, lamb biryani, samosa and lettuce wrap and it's so good! Took my dad here for the first time and he loved it. Service was excellent. It was a busy lunch but we were taken care of and was the last one in and didn't feel rushed at all. I love the ambience of this restaurant. The waterfalls on the wall is Bella's fave and the decoration makes you feel like you're in India. Royal India Del Mar is my go to for Indian food! Highly recommend this spot

Craig S.

Yelp
Great menu. Great tasting food. Very good service and staff. Even though it was very busy our meal didn't take very long to arrive!

Yelp
They have great lunch specials! Also excellent service and delicious food. Pleasant decor/- a step up from most Indian restaurants.

Yelp
We feasted on the delicious Vegetarian Royal Dinner for two & had some left over for a bonus lunch today. After a delicious dal soup and amazing crisped samosa starter with tasty sauces, we had the palak paneer & the navrattan korma as our entree curries. They were both very flavorful and fresh tasting. Despite being busy, our server was really attentive and made great suggestions. This is a really pretty restaurant and was fun for a date night. We would absolutely go back !

Yelp
I used to live nearby and come here all the time, but it'd been awhile since I had been back and I was craving their food so much. So I was super excited to go back again with a big group of friends and try even more dishes that we could share family style! We tried: mango lassi royal paneer lettuce wraps samosas chipotle chicken kabab tandoori shrimp chicken tikka masala saag paneer pineapple mango curry royal lamb malai rasmalai Perfect feast! The service was amazing just as I remembered, and the interior is so beautiful and comfortable. We need to make it back more often!
