Royal Indian Cuisine - Review - Fillmore - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Royal Indian Cuisine is a reliable spot for Indian dishes in the Fillmore, especially when spending your annual streaming service allowance at Copra down the street is out of the question. The curry standbys, like chicken tikka masala and daal makhani, are solid. But make sure to start off with a steamer of chicken momos, which arrive curled around each other like a pile of sleeping puppies and drip with juice when you take a bite. It’s easy to get a table once you dodge the hordes of delivery drivers out front, making this place a go-to for lowkey weeknight dinners or fuel-ups before catching a movie at the Kabuki nearby." - Julia Chen

Google
Solid North Indian cuisine in San Francisco. We had a delicious meal with friendly service. And the prices were really good! Def would check out again. The perfect little local spot!

Google
Great food and service here! Food came out nice and hot very promptly. Tasted great. Lassis were initially not cold but waiter quickly fixed them and they tasted great. Wonderful place to get a good Indian fix.

Came in late after a show at the Fillmore. Very very very pleasantly surprised. The people working were kind and nice. The food was amazing! Strong recommendation!

Good food, reasonable prices and portions, and excellent service. The butter naan was excellent. Rice was cooked well.

Got a nice meal here. Came with some starters given with 3 flavors of dipping sauce with thin crunchy deep fried large crackers (no extra charge) I also enjoyed the lamb biryani, it was very flavorful. The garlic naan and chicken momo dumplings were also great Restaurant vibes are good and service is friendly

Google
Food is very tasty and very good even though we ordered via door dash. It also a good amount for what you pay for. We ordered chicken vindaloo, the assorted tandoori, naan, samosas, and momos. It’s a good amount of spice (so might be a bit spicier than average). Rice was not included. Overall very tasty.

Google
We found this Indian restaurant highly recommended on Google Maps and decided to give it a try last weekend. It totally surprised us! The complimentary papadam was crisp and delicious. The naan, curry and tandoori were super tasty and exceeded our expectations. The staff were nice, funny, and friendly.

Had an incredible dining experience at this restaurant! Our server, DB, was absolutely amazing—polite, kind, and had a great sense of humor. He even played a fun little prank on us, which made the experience even more enjoyable! What stood out the most was his thoughtfulness—he adjusted my drink to be salty instead of sugary due to my condition, which was such a kind gesture. On top of that, the food was absolutely delicious! Great service, great atmosphere, and great food—I’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Amazing Indian food and great service located in the heart of Japantown! I was craving Indian cuisine after my trip to India, and this really hit the spot. If you're looking for good homestyle Indian cooking, come here versus the expensive modern fusion next door. I came here with a group of 3 and here are the things we liked: * chicken momos: 4/5 yummy sauce and filling * butter garlic nann: 3/5 super huge nan great portions, garlic was tasty but the bread can turn hard pretty fast - eat it while fresh and hot! * Salmon curry: 5/5 our group favorite, served in a tomato curry sauce and salmon portions were generous * chicken biriyani: 4/5 generous chunks of meat, flavorful rice and seasoning I will definitely be back! Loved the portions, flavor, and quiet ambience in this local spot.

Yelp
The samosas were good and the lunch special was great for the price. The service left much to be desired. Firstly, the attitude and tone of the host when I tried to order drinks gave me the impression I was pestering him. This attitude and impatience extended to ordering food when he would give very short and curt replies to questions about the menu that did not answer my questions. I then had to repeat my drink request twice only for him to forget for another 15 minutes while he happily greeted a second customer (clearly a regular) with smiles and service that was denied to us for some reason so I just gave up on the drink after that and made sure it wasn't on the bill. As if to add insult to injury, he proceeded to take the order of the second customer and served their food before me despite my ordering first. We waited with an empty table so long that it got to to the point that it took a kitchen staff member coming out and asking if we were ready to leave because we had been sitting there with an empty table for so long before our food was eventually served lukewarm. Only after we confirmed we had yet to receive our food to the kitchen staff memeber that HE went to the back, found our food and brought it out; not the host/waiter whose job it is to do so! The host just stared into the distance ignoring us and chatting with the customers that came after us with smiles and laughter whilst we sat there hungry. Please replace your host/waiter, Jalson P, as this will be the last time we come to your establishment and it is because of his preferential treatment and lack of basic restaurant etiquette. Send him to the back as a dishwasher where he belongs. He is not suitable to be the face of your establishment.

Yelp
Ordered takeaway again - this time: Butter chicken - great flavor of curry, be mindful this is creamy. The chicken are smaller tandoori pieces, that are fatty, so overall it's a heavy dish and delicious. Saag Paneer - tried for first time here. One thing to keep in mind.. if you're a saag paneer fiend, just know this is a bit different than the average. Actually less greasy and much more greens-forward in flavor, with the blend of greens less cooked down into an aromatic, green, mush and more chunky still. If you've ever had the Persian stew "ghorme sabzi" it's more akin to that. Went for garlic naan this time and was plain, but fine. I think better than the paneer naan as there was more flavor to hang onto. Samosas - enjoyed these. Large chunks of potatoes and smaller accents of peas. On the spicy end. The flour shell is on the thicker side - like a pot pie.

Yelp
I got the butter chicken, garlic naan, & samosas. Everything was pretty standard. Nothing blew me away. I ordered an hour in advanced and still had to wait 15 minutes once I got there which is not spectacular. Many places to sit inside. It's okay. I did like the sauces that come with the samosas. The samosas were warm and flakey and full of filling.

Yelp
Always walked by this place on my way to and from Japantown, and finally tried it for the first time. It was empty around 5:30p - 7:00p on a Sunday. Would come back to try other things. Chicken korma - 4.5/5, good portion of curry and chicken. I really love the cashew taste, I feel like it adds a lot to the flavor and creaminess! Goat/lamb curry - 3/5, if I remember correctly it was tomato based or something similar, which wasn't bad. We wanted to order some other goat or lamb dish, but got the wrong one. After receiving and reading about the dish on the menu, we knew it wasn't something we would pick so it just wasn't for us. Chicken momo - 3/5, seemed a bit bland even with sauce. Good if you want something lighter on taste. Garlic naan - 4/5, a large piece of naan cut in half. Good amount of garlic and flavor.

Yelp
I got takeout from here and was so excited to try this place as I walk by it all the time! However, I was pretty disappointed in the portion sizes as they are charging $18+ for a small portion of butter chicken and lamb tikka masala. The chicken and the lamb only had like 6-8 pieces each of meat in it so I was disappointed paying $18 for the sauce basically. The naan was okay as well as it didn't have much flavor and didn't really do anything for me. Not sure I'll be back again as the prices just don't justify the quality of the food.

Yelp
Went to Royal Indian for lunch today. Their lunch special may be best deal in town. There are only two to choose from: chicken or veg. The chicken comes with chicken two ways: tika masala and tandoori chicken thigh. In addition a bowl of rice, cup of lentils, and hunk of naan. You can't go wrong for under $16 bucks. Cloth tablecloth and napkins are a nice touch as well.

Yelp
Hungry and saw the lunch sign special: chicken masala, $14.99. That really caught my eye. Ordered to go. They gave me a very heavy brown bag. When I opened it, here was so many things inside. Half a spongy naan, so soft. 3 small containers. Lentil soup (to salty). Chicken marsala was delicious with lots of chunks of chicken. Basmati rice. The last surprise was a foil wrapped tandoori chicken. At first I saw the burnt chicken thigh, but I ate around burnt part and it was so tender. Great taste. This was so worth it. I ate 1/4 and I was full.

Yelp
This place has great butter chicken! Although the portions seem small when they come out, they are very rich and filling - so don't be fooled! The garlic naan is also delicious, & if you eat there you will get the free appetizer dish, and I love the cilantro & sweeter sauce that comes with it. Service is great - fast & friendly! Plenty of tables inside, this can be a nice weekday date night out!

Yelp
I've yet to have any Indian cuisine in SF. This shall be my first! Muahahah! And it's after a workout so I am hun-gry. On a Thursday night at 7:30pm, there was a small table of people. The atmosphere was pleasant, with some nice traditional music and colorful wall inlets that brightened the mood for sure. The vegetable pakora was the most fresh I've seen.. maybe ever in the states? They were hot, aromatic, and the chic-pea flower looked crisp and fresh, not just mushy and fluffy. I enjoyed the chicken korma. What I liked most was it wasn't overly buttery-- sometimes chefs add a lot for "flavor" but it's an easy way out. I don't disagree, but it's nice to get something a little different tho I know people who seek out that buttery flavor specifically. The naan portion was large, along with the pakora. At first I thought the chicken portion was a little small, but in the end I was satisfied. I'm always a fan of Himalayan and Nepali spots because the politeness and hospitality is always A1. And it didn't disappoint this time. This is a cozy spot to get satisfying Indian cuisine and can be a solo spot, and a casual place after work or for lunch with friends. Naan, pakora, chicken korma, and rice was $34.11 which is quite good considering I'll have a second meal with leftovers :)

Yelp
Great in every respect. Great food with lots of options. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices were fair. Everything was clean and fresh. Great place to stop when going to the Fillmore!

Yelp
So beyond gross. Placed an order via Uber eats for delivery. First, they forgot my second order of rice. Second, the butter chicken masala was inedible - so many bones. Disgusting. Lastly, strands of hair in the paneer tikka masala. Threw everything in the garbage. Requested a refund

Yelp
Really really great food and affordable prices! I thoroughly enjoyed their samosa - the outside was soooo buttery and rich it tasted like a pie crust. By far the best samosa I've had. I have not eaten Indian food very much before so I played it safe and got a tikka masala with veggie balls called Malai Kofta medium spicy and it was delicious but not spicy at all. The naan was great. Friendly service and again very reasonable prices for quality food. I would definitely recommend eating here.

Yelp
Did a walk in, and was pleasantly surprised. Quiet seating, private and cosy ambiance. Ordered boti lamb and tandoori prawns.. and chicken masala, Rohan Josh. Very nice food couldn't find any faults. Helpful staff, clean, and easy to enjoy.

Michael S.

Yelp
The food and service were incredible. I had never seen Tandoori Salmon before on a menu and it turned out to be fantastic. Fresh, perfectly prepared, with peppers and onions on top. It was medium spicy and delicious. I loved that it came sizzling.

Yelp
I have lived in SF for 2.5 years and Royal Indian Cuisine is my favorite go to for Indian food. The staff is very nice and the food is always warm and delicious. They are most dependable restaurant there is when I need a nice and comforting hot meal!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was pretty good but they don't seem to want business. We came a little more than 20 minutes before they closed for lunch. The person that greeted us told us, "You have to be fast and order right away because the kitchen is going to close soon." That's fair and we already knew what we wanted to order. But one guy that took our order later kept mentioning it like he wanted us to leave. We ordered within 5 minutes of sitting down. When my mom was ordering her food, he gave a long sigh and showed us he was impatient. We should've left right then and went to another Indian restaurant. The same guy kept giving us attitude the whole time. He shouldn't have let us sit down and order if he was going to do that. Another waiter we had was nice but I would not come back. There are many other great restaurants in SF to dine in, it's not worth the attitude.

Yelp
Hands down the best Indian food in Sf! My go to order is the butter chicken & my Bf's order is always the Lamb curry! Garlic & butter nan is super soft!! 10/10

Devin P.

Yelp
Lunch specials are a terrific deal. Food was good (not as oily as some other places we often order from). The staff was the friendliest! One staff member brought our baby a balloon and carried him around the restaurant. Another shared stories of his family in Nepal. A warm, welcoming, tasty meal on a Saturday.

Megan M.

Yelp
Good flavor but tons of bones and tendons in the butter chicken which was not enjoyable.

Yelp
Great service, fresh food , friendly staff , specially jainson he is respectful, very polite and checking on us for everything Food was delicious but if they make little gravy on jeera Aaloo that will be easy to eat with poori

Yelp
Though I don't know too much about this cuisine, the foods we picked out were absolutely divine! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I came on Friday evening and was very happy with the tandoori chicken. I also thought the service was pretty good and highly attentive..... I highly recommend this place!!!

Yelp
My wife and I wanted to try another Indian Himalayan restaurant and just happen to walk past Royal Indian Cuisine. The staff was welcoming and friendly. We ordered the Papadam as an appetizer and it was accompanied by three sauces: tamarind, cilantro and a spicy sauce. All of them were very good because they had a thicker consistency than the one's served at other Indian restaurants. My wife enjoyed the Vegetable Tikka Masala and I tried a lamb dish the Kadai Ghost along with Butter Naan and basmati rice. We look forward to returning to try more dishes.

Yelp
TL;DR a hidden gem. Unvalued. Highly recommend. Will go again for sure. Food - 4/5 cup of hot chai - SO SO GOOD. A Must have. We ordered extra. Papadum - seriously best EVER. Crazy good. we ordered extra. (This is a favorite food of mine, I order these at every Indian place. These ones are my new ultimate. Transcended the genre.) Salmon Saag Curry, very good. Would order again Egg fried rice (?!yep I know!?) - super good, highly recommend Daal soup, fine. Nothing special. Garlic naan, great! Spinach naan, very good Plain basmati rice, good Coconut curry chicken of some kind? Looked and smelled good, my friend said was very good Spice level - perfect. They asked us our preferences unprompted and delivered exactly as requested. Service - 5/5 So kind and friendly, very prompt, very gracious, never in the way. Perfect. Pricing/cost - 5/5 So reasonable! Big meal, with a small amount of leftovers, for two hungry people, about $100. Atmosphere - 4.5/5 Pretty dining room, very nice furniture, inviting Cloth napkins. Unusually loud background music. Indian music is lovely but also weirdly interspersed with USA pop songs? Tables spaced apart nicely. Bathroom (a single) was very clean and nice. No wait and no reservations needed for 6:30pm on a Thursday evening.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance here - quiet, peaceful and quite classy! Staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. We ordered the butter chicken with naan and both were really good. The butter chicken was super creamy and rich, and the naan was perfectly soft (and also huge)! The food does take a while to come out but it came piping hot and was both fresh and delicious. The portion size of the butter chicken was a bit smaller than I expected but the quality of the food really made up for it. Will definitely have to come back to try their other dishes!
google avatar

Meg G.

Yelp
The service was excellent and I loved the decor! Food wise, it didn't taste very authentic and the food was mild in terms of spice, so that was a bit underwhelming. But it definitely makes sense with being on Filmore and mostly catering to non Indian customers. The best thing we had was the dal makhani!
google avatar

Huda A.

Yelp
Such a great experience, the food environment, the service, the quality everything was amazing. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
This place is so good. Food is fantastic and the staff is really friendly. Been here twice and got a few different things, I forget what they are called but goodness is it amazing.

Yelp
Royal Indian is as its name implies - tasty, grand Indian cuisine that is fit for the soul. My friends and I ordered out for lunch here and we chose to go vegan for the mains, so we could all have a bit of everything. Starting off with their Vegetable Momo ($9), the six piece dumplings were bomb and kicked off our meal in the best way possible. Savory and not too salty, steamed to perfection is how I'd describe these momos. For our main, we went with their Baigan Charta ($12) next. The roasted eggplant baigan had a ton of flavor and was a great accompaniment to our rice and roti. This version was pureed fairly well while at other restaurants, they retain some of the eggplant's structure. Either way, it was still a win. We also had their Dal Tadka ($13), stewed yellow lentils in Indian spices, and this was another great addition to our lunch. I actually preferred the dal over the eggplant dish in this case. Overall, a flavorful lunch that really left us full, even if it didn't look like a lot of food at first. Everything minus the naan was also 'accidentally vegan,' so if you're needing to find accommodations or want to explore more plant based eating, Indian is often a great way to start!
google avatar

Ariel P.

Yelp
Really was looking for great food with a good feel with some friends. And I feel like I met more but they are able to cook some of the best Indian food I've had. & yes I have tried a lot - highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Quick service and hot food. All items were tasty. Would definitely come back to try more items.

Yelp
Hidden gem. I've been coming here for years and it's consistent time after time. Great food, great service and kindness from the staff, always. It feels good to be in the space - I'm grateful they are still here in this viscous SF small business market!
google avatar

Yelp
They give a free appetizer that's crispy with three different types of sauces. When I grabbed mines, it broke and fell to the ground. The server heard me said oops and said she will give me another one. I felt so bad but thankful!! The tandoori chicken is yummy and smells so good from the grill. The vegetables biryani rice was yummy too and also the garlic naan. I went a second time and had the chicken kebab tandoori and butter naan. The setting is very beautiful with formal tablecloth and vases with flowers! Looks fancy but prices are reasonable. My friend said he accidentally left his Bible, but the server Irene was kind to call to let him know. Outstanding customer service!

Sabrina N.

Yelp
THE GOOD- samosas, biryani rice, naan bread, location, decor THE BAD- dirty glass doors, waitresses cleaning the table by brushing food and crumbs onto the floor then using the customer's drinking water to wet the table cloth then brush it off (I was floored seeing this!), dirty floors have NOT been cleaned, swept, etc. The texture of the chicken is questionable...was it really chicken? Waitresses didn't offer refills of water. THE UGLY- all table linen was wrinkled af, needs celing tiles replaced from visible water damage I thought I'd found a new local gem but I decline to return.
google avatar

Vida M.

Yelp
Came with a friend spontaneously, and was NOT disappointed. I ordered the chicken masala (spicy) and it was fantastic paired with my potato filled naan!

Heather P.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this gem quite by accident. Both the service and the food were excellent--their passion for authentic ingredients was apparent in how they described each dish... and the servers could not have been kinder. We highly recommend this place!!!

Music M.

Yelp
Too long of a menu and the price are way too high and nobody is gonna pay for a bowl of diarrhea if it's not done properly ha ha ha ha ha ha

Yelp
My family and I were here the other night by accident! The restaurant we originally planned on was closed and we were delighted to see that Royal Indian Cuisine was close by and open! When we arrived, we had a bit of a wait (about 5-10 minutes) and we quickly seated after the other party finished and the table was cleaned. My family and I ordered the following items: - Vegetable Pakora - delicious and served with three chutney sauces - Paneer Tikka Masala - no spice for kids (they LOVED it and devoured it) - Garlic Naan - a MUST for all the curries - Basmati Rice - another great addition to our meal - Navaratan Korma - my husband ordered this and thought it was lovely! Extremely flavorful and perfect in every way - Coconut Veg Curry - mixed vegetables cooked in a wonderful smooth curry base sauce - tomato and cucumber salad Overall - our meal was so perfect. We had NO complaints about anything. We loved the options we ordered and everything was wonderful. The staff were friendly and attentive.

Dan Asher D.

Yelp
Very underrated restaurant. The coconut lamb curry is so so good! It is a good match with Naan. Their mango drink is good too! It is a good place to try something authentic. Vibe in the restaurant is chill. It's not loud and it's kinda fancy.
google avatar

Yelp
We usually have been eating take-out these days, but today's experience reminded us of the joy of eating out. The staff was welcoming and more than accommodating to our two toddlers. They were very attentive and were willing to help whenever we needed. We got fish tikka masala, chicken achari, and saag paneer. We got many free samples of food too but more than anything else our server was good spirited and very funny. All the things that we have missed about eating out were at Royal Indian.
google avatar

Allison W.

Yelp
After five years of searching, I finally found my Indian restaurant in the city. While the decor may not be flashy, what won me over was the impeccable food and service (Jalson). From the Papadam and chutneys offered complimentary (not one other restaurant we have tried has offered that!) to delicious, perfectly spiced food, it was just such a relief to have well done favorites. Delicious saag paneer and chicken tikka masala with huge plentiful chunks of chicken, (something most other restaurants skimp on). I can't wait to go back and try the lamb! The Taj was ice cold and the gulab Janum they treated us to was perfection. Delightful experience and super well priced! A++

Riley N.

Yelp
Food was super tasty, the waiter was friendly and had great recommendations, they constantly refilled our waters, and the bill was very affordable. What else could you ask for! The waiters name started with a J.

Yelp
Just had lunch with my son today. Very pleasant and attentive. We ordered our usual menu, butter chicken, garlic bread and chicken biryani. Gave us free desserts . Thank you .

Yelp
Spent Mother's Day here. Restaurant never disappoints. Excellent service, atmosphere, food. Waiters were great and very attentive throughout the meal. Thank you! We'll be back soon.

Yelp
Best Indian food in SF! Beyond friendly staff. Chicken tikka is delicious, chicken is always cooked perfectly and never dry. Kabuli nann is spot on. Thanks guys!

Yelp
