The 31 Essential Kolkata Restaurants

"At the turn of the 20th century, Ahmed Hussain migrated to Calcutta from Lucknow and set up a small eatery with only three items on the menu: khuska (a light dish of turmeric-tinged rice), lightly spiced qaliya made with chunks of goat meat, and mutton chaap (slices of goat meat braised with a rich blend of alliums and spices and pan-roasted in clarified butter). More than a century later, Royal is one of the luminaries of Kolkata’s fabled Mughlai cuisine. The menu has expanded over time, but the place is still synonymous with chaap (now also made with whole chicken legs). The signature, crowd-favorite biryani doesn’t include potatoes, in keeping with the tradition of Hussain’s native Lucknow; instead, big chunks of meat and a few tiny meatballs nestle in a bed of fragrant, fluffy grains of long-grain rice. Note: A few years ago, the restaurant opened a glitzy outlet in Park Circus where it serves Kolkata-style biryani, complete with a glistening orange potato." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Established in 1905. Still serving with pride. There is something in the food taste that will keep you visiting there several times. Though they make Awadhi Biryani which means there is no Aloo innthe Biryani. But the taste and mutton piece is so beautiful that will make you forget about the Aloo. Mutton Chhap is their signature dish. So must try this. We had tried Chicken Jojobas starter which was very good.

Visited Royal Indian Hotel recently — the food was overall good. The mutton chaap was especially delicious and full of flavor. However, the biryani was a bit disappointing as it had more of a Lucknowi style, which didn’t quite meet my expectations. On the brighter side, the firni was excellent — creamy, perfectly sweet, and a great way to end the meal. The staff were polite and provided good service. Overall, a nice dining experience with a few areas for improvement...

It was a very bitter experience for us from beginning to end. We have to ask them many times for a glass of water and remind them several times for the menu card. We ordered for chicken biryani and they served mutton and pretending that was out fault. The attitude was something different as if they are doing any charity. They must keep this fact in their mind that it is our hard earned money we are spending for eating out. Food quality 'so so' but overpriced in comparison with quantity. After this bitter episode they were literally forcing and arguing with the customer for the amount of tips 😀.Strange indeed! So Debipaksha has started and we are planning for eating out,if you don't want same , please avoid such so called heritage restaurant of our city Kolkata.

I visited this restaurant with two of my friends about two weeks ago, and overall, it was quite a memorable experience. We decided to go for three plates of mutton biryani, one plate of kadhai chicken, and three cold drinks to go with the meal. The biryani, without a doubt, was the highlight of the evening. It was extremely fragrant, the rice was long-grained and perfectly cooked, and the flavors were rich and layered. The pieces of mutton were tender and juicy, cooked just right so that they almost melted in the mouth. Every bite carried that authentic biryani aroma, which made it completely satisfying. The kadhai chicken, on the other hand, was slightly on the oily side, but despite that, the taste did not disappoint. It had the right balance of spices, and the chicken was well-cooked, making it an enjoyable side dish with the biryani. The restaurant has two seating sections one Non-AC and another AC. The AC section is located upstairs, accessible by a narrow, ladder-like staircase. The staff also mentioned that the AC and Non-AC sections have different rates, which was interesting. We opted for the AC section, and though it was more comfortable, it was also crowded. Because of this, we had to wait around 15–20 minutes before getting a table. In the end, the food quality and overall dining experience were worth the wait. If you are planning to visit, I would recommend trying the mutton biryani for sure, as it truly lives up to its reputation.

The Royal Indian Hotel is a true gem that exceeded our expectations in every way. As soon as we stepped inside, we were transported to a bygone era - the interior is a testament to the hotel's rich history, with every detail telling a story of its own. The ambiance is warm and inviting, making you feel like you're dining in a royal palace. But the real star of the show is the food. We were a bit skeptical at first, wondering if the hype surrounding this hotel was justified. But one bite into their dishes, and all doubts were dispelled. Every item on the menu is a masterclass in flavor and technique, with each bite more delicious than the last. The must-try items are undoubtedly the Mutton Rezala and Biryani. The Rezala is rich and aromatic, with tender mutton pieces that just melt in your mouth. The Biryani, on the other hand, is a symphony of flavors, with each grain of rice cooked to perfection. While the hotel itself is a delight, the only downside is the parking situation. Being located on a busy street, finding a spot can be a challenge. However, this minor inconvenience is well worth it for the exceptional dining experience that awaits you. Overall, the Royal Indian Hotel is a must-visit for anyone looking to indulge in authentic, mouth-watering Indian cuisine. With its rich history, warm ambiance, and incredible food, this hidden gem is sure to leave you wanting more. Don't miss out on the opportunity to dine like royalty - visit the Royal Indian Hotel today! P.S. Do try the Mutton Rezala and Biryani - they're truly unforgettable!

This biryani is just as delicious as I remember from a year ago—truly a favorite. It's less spicy, but in a way that enhances the flavors without overwhelming them. While you won't find the typical aloo, the taste more than makes up for it. I also tried the mutton chap, which was average, but both the chicken and mutton biryani are absolute must-haves for any biryani lover.

Their Mutton Chaap and Galouti Kebab are to die for! So so juicy and delicious. Melts in the mouth! One of the very oldest Biryani shops in Kolkata, probably the oldest one I think.

To be honest, their biryani isn't too good, meaning it's not something you have to eat, but it's good, at least compared to normal shops. The rice in the biryani is very soft which makes it different from others, there is a very small amount of palm oil mix, the taste is very simple, not spicy, 1 piece of mutton, no potatoes, the limited amount of rice is not even a little more, 1 plate does not fullfill one's stomach properly, this is not a biryani worth eating for rs 400, only 1 piece of mutton and limited rice, it's only hype..
