"A packed social calendar (live music and nightly wine service), spacious and home-like rooms (Frette sheets, lots of natural light), and the organic small-plate-focused restaurant, Red Star Tavern, make Monaco one of the most coveted reservations in town. The elaborate, Mediterranean-themed tapestries and vibrant red-orange-and-blue color scheme throughout the communal areas and rooms are a refreshing departure from the strictly classical or modern hotels in the city. Lest you forget you’re in Portland, a live goldfish can be sent up to your room upon request to keep you company during your stay."

"Back up, and give us the wide-angle view of this place. If your favorite childhood toy was a kaleidoscope, and you think the Mad Hatter would make an insanely great interior decorator, then this cool, quirky hotel’s gonna be your happy place. After stepping through the royalty-worthy leaded glass double doors, the fun begins in the lobby, a technicolor tableau of low-slung pink and purple velvet loungers, plush fainting sofas, floor-length fuchsia drapes, and stacks of funky-patterned pillows, all of which adds up to just the right amount of over-the-top-ness. Add in a crackling black marble fireplace, an oversized chess board, and the occasional gypsy jazz swing band, and you’ve got the makings of a great party—and it's all before you even reach your equally-eclectic room. Phew! Alright, we can dig it. What’s the crowd like?Fido and family, conference-goers, happy honeymooners, girls' trippers. Got it. Now, onto the good stuff: Tell us about your room.Beautiful inside and out, top floor corner king suites continue the delightfully outrageous decor theme started in the lobby, and raise it a view of snow-capped Mt. Hood. Flocks of birds flit across the wallpaper, bright yellow and purple plaid pillows rested on the high-backed leather headboard, and after a few sun salutations on the in-room yoga mat, you can head downstairs to the adjoining Aveda spa for a deep tissue massage and detoxifying Moor mud wrap. That sounds divine. How about the little things, like the mini bar, or the shower goodies? Anything you want to call attention to?The WiFi’s free and speedy, complimentary organic coffee and tea awaits you in the lobby every morning, and if you've left your iPhone charger at home (the horror!), the extensive “You forgot it, we got it” list includes that, along with 21 other travel amenities, including a humidifier and hair straightener. In love with that zebra-print Turkish cotton bathrobe you’ve decided is totally your style? It's all yours, for a cool $150. There's so much funk—it's fun! Now brief us on the room service and food situation: Worth it?The on-site restaurant, Red Star Tavern, is hit or miss, so put in a little legwork (four blocks worth) and have dinner at Little Bird Bistro (sister restaurant to lauded Le Pigeon) instead; the roasted marrow bones and chicken-fried trout are standouts, the double Brie burger is beefy French-American decadence, and pastry chef Erin Hughes’ chocolate raspberry roulade will delight. Back at the hotel, cash in the nightcap and cookie coupon you got at check-in before retiring for the night. For breakfast, room service can send up smoked pork loin Benedict and blueberry buttermilk pancakes, or it’s a brisk three-block walk to beloved brunch spot Mother’s Bistro. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—tell us what they really did right.Plenty of Portland hotels are dog-friendly, but this one goes beyond. Expect a warm, wet-nosed welcome from the canine concierge, and if you’ve got a doggo in tow, his or her name goes up on the (dog-shaped) chalkboard. Request a dog bed, dog food and water dishes, dog sitter, dog walker (or doody bags if that’s your job); if you ask nicely, the front desk can probably even track down an excellent dog masseur. So cute! Bottom line: worth it, and why?Delightful decor, one the best hotel happy hours in town, superlative service, and a genuine soft spot for your four-legged travel partners make this cozy and colorful downtown den a no-brainer." - Jen Stevenson

The hotel was a short walk to Cheryl's (a restaurant with a menu that was recommended by the hotel's restaurant because I didn't want a buffet for breakfast), other good restaurants and local coffee shops, the 2 public squares that are used for pickups if you take tour(s) of Portland and/or the vicinity, Powell's City of Books, the art museum, and the farmers' market if your vacation overlaps on the day of this event. The room didn't seem to be recently renovated, but it was very nice. I especially liked the wallpaper and the bathroom decor. My room on the 7th floor overlooked the street with the light rail, and I loved the sound as it passed by. The sitting area off the lobby is relaxing, with a gas fireplace. The hotel used to be a department store, so it feels like a boutique or a one-of-a-kind hotel. I gave 5 stars for "Service," but I didn't use the services because I stayed only 3 nights, and I chose to be green by not having the sheets changed daily, and because I was on a solo vacation, I didn't need more towels, which I probably could have requested. The staff at the front desk is amazing. They were helpful and friendly, making recommendations of restaurants, coffee shops, and things to do, and briefly listening to my daily travels when I returned each day. The staff is social and comfortable with all ages. I'm a septuagenarian, and they are young. If I travel back to Portland OR, I'll stay at The Royal Sonesta again.

This historic building has been updated in many ways for the comfort of the guests. It has all the things you’d expect from a luxury hotel, including dry cleaning, in-room safe, ice bucket/glasses, bottled water in room, robes, extra blankets and pillows, an iron & board, hairdryer, soaps, shampoos, body wash, cotton swabs and balls, etc. The rooms are spacious and come equipped with blackout and sheer curtains to your preference, the shower has good water pressure, and toilets are updated to modern standards. The lobby is incredible, with tall bookshelves filled with books that you can take to your room, a piano, comfortable seating, chess tables, and very good coffee/tea/hot chocolate available in the mornings. They have on-site secured parking, and professional security. The location can’t be beat. Just 2 blocks from Pioneer Square, so the max trains can take you anywhere in the greater Portland area. Walking distance to Waterfront Park (you can walk across the Steel Bridge or Burnside Bridge from Waterfront Park, which we enjoyed on our last visit) and walking distance to the Galleria Shops, Powells Bookstore, and so much more! The staff at this hotel are top notch as well. Everyone has been friendly and helpful, and the cleaning staff do a great job keeping this hotel and specifically the guest rooms in good condition. My son and I have stayed at a few hotels in Downtown Portland, but none compare to The Royal Sonesta. We’ve stayed here 3 times and will definitely be returning. It’s just got such a fun kitschy Portland vibe and atmosphere, and I can’t imagine ever finding another hotel we like more.

Love staying here. The front desk often helps to set the tone of my experience at any given hotel. Ray, who works at the front desk, has such good energy. He’s always so professional and makes us feel comfortable during our stays. Will definitely keep booking here when visiting Portland.

This is a fine place to rest your head but is nothing special. ||The room was comfortable, the bed was fine, it was all fine-fine-fine. There's simply nothing special or extraordinary about it. It was clean. I found a deal on a discount site which made it that much more affordable but.... if you're looking for something with lots of charm or personality that is out of the ordinary, this isn't it.||The room decor is.... strange. Bright yellow and purple checked with bird wallpaper and big black and white graphic accents. But hey, you can see that in the photos.||There is a business area which is a small cubby space but I was happy they had one, as I had to use it.||And the check in process was very nice - the reception desk checked us in late and night and they seemed like they were used to it and were quite friendly. Do note, if you check in late, you'll either need to do street parking or park in a lot a couple blocks away as the valet/on site parking doesn't run late at night.||So a fine, clean stay. Just nothing special.

I usually stay with Marriott since we have status but decided to find something with some flair and this hotel is sooo clean and decorated in the most fun way. Super easy check in and Frederick at the front desk is so kind and helpful- everyone from the employee working near the entrance door and valet (I didn’t catch their name!) were very friendly too. Location is great for being on foot- would recommend!

Google
Comfortable, quiet, and well-located for my purposes. I stay here because of the spacious suites. The only thing I wish they would change is the $30 ($34.80 after tax) "destination fee" that leaves you feeling like you got ripped off, even though their advertised price is inclusive. Nobody wants the $15 credit for potato chips at a 300% markup in the "lobby market".

Google
The location is very convenient for getting into downtown from the airport. The rooms we had on our two stays a week apart were both spacious and comfortable. Water bottle were provided. Parking is available at $49/day, I thought that rather high. Also, it wasn't until after I had made the booking that they informed me there is a $30/day "destination fee" whatever that is. And the a $30/day amenities fee that can be applied to cover restaurant or mini-bar charges. Since breakfast is $15/person, it covered that for us. BTW, the young woman at breakfast, Nadyah, was a delight. She would have made the place 5 stars, but I have to knock off 2 stars for them adding fees after the booking. That isn't right!

Google
The rooms are comfortable and tasteful! Loved the decor! All the staff are helpful and caring! We had dinner at Finch which was delicious! Scarlet Bibb was the best salad I have ever had!! The wine was great, and the Pan-Roasted Bistro Steak & House Angus Burger were delicious! The staff was friendly and attentive! I recommend this to everyone in Portland to enjoy the hotel and restaurant! The parking staff are attentive and took great care of our car!

Yelp
The Royal Sonesta perfectly captures Portland's eclectic charm. I've stayed here several times, consistently choosing it over other options for its prime location, excellent service, and spacious rooms. The front desk and valet staff are always incredibly friendly and accommodating. On my most recent visit, when the heating in our room stopped working, they promptly upgraded us to a new room without hesitation. The hotel also has night security, which made me feel completely safe, even as a solo female traveler. I highly recommend the Royal Sonesta to anyone seeking a genuine Portland experience!

Yelp
This hotel is fantastic. I love the decor. The room has character. The service is amazing. We arrived early into Portland and we came to the hotel with the intention of just dropping off our luggage until check-in time later in the afternoon. We were able to get our room with a view of the mountain. Our shower was not working but we also did not want to leave the room that we had so they send a lovely maintenance worker to fix it in 10 minutes. The woman in the front desk with the long dark maybe black hair is fantastic. Her smile was so welcoming. She gave us recommendations and had someone one upstairs very fast to fix the shower. Another plus you get a $15 daily credit towards the lobby market. It really comes in handy.

Yelp
The Royal Sonesta in Portland is located in down town, there are a lot of things that are walkable food, shops, public transit and bars. The hotel itself has a quirky cool vibe in my opinion. The decor is super different and makes the hotel unique which I appreciate. It's not one of these cookie cutter hotels that all look exactly the same with a branch in every major city you go to. The furnishing and wall paper gives it a super unique vibe. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful shout out Kelsy I hope I spelled it right. She was very helpful answered all my partners questions and helped us modify our reservations since we ended up adding a day. She was again friendly and helpful which is what you want when it comes to customer service Their restaurant has a good breakfast as well as dinner and they do have good happy hour deals if you don't feel like wondering around town. The room we got was spacious, we had a king suite which was super roomy for the two of us. Bed was nice and comfortable, pillows were actual down filled and I passed out super easily as soon as I laid down. The little living room area was nice since it closed off from the bedroom and had its own TV as well. All in all it's located pretty central in downtown, there's a really cool bar 100 feet away and I liked the hotels vibes. If I were to come back I wouldn't mind staying here again.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay. We hosted a conference here and the staff helped with every request we had. They had everything we needed to host a small group -- from project to audio. Parking is super easy and underground. The lobby is a beautiful display of maximal decoration. The room was fantastic, from floor to ceiling. Everything was clean and quiet. I didn't run into any problems with my room, or anything else for that matter. The kitchen staff were really helpful with food prep and serving. They were even so kind as to suggest sightseeing location!

Yelp
My first stay at The Royal Sonesta was a great experience. It will surely be the first of many more to come. The room had a view of both the city and Mt. Hood. Always cool to see the contrast of those elements together from a decent height (10th floor). The room also had bird themed wallpaper and an interesting decor in general. My favorite was the Q*bert upholstered chair. The staff were all very friendly, but what really made my stay special was my first impression of the hotel. Karla greeted me and checked me in when I arrived. She was very friendly and a pleasure to chat with. I had some issues figuring out the card/lock and she was very polite and understanding (despite it being a problem I created). Her professional demeanor combined with her customer first service are what every staff member should strive for. A++

Yelp
Super cute and quirky hotel. I enjoyed my stay. Owen at the front desk was an absolute delight and made interactions fun and welcoming. There is (was) no restaurant open during my stay. Also, no in room refrigerator. I ordered everything by Uber Eats and DoorDash. Their "living room" lobby was a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy. They serve coffee there in the mornings. Room was comfortable and I look forward to my return. Friendly, quirky, and fun.

Yelp
This hotel was one of our resting places on our way up to Seattle. There is complimentary valet for parking and you take the elevator up to the lobby. The hotel was very quirky and different than any hotel I've stayed at. I really enjoyed the decor and the interior of both the lobby and our room. There was complimentary wine served in the lobby from 5-6PM and we enjoyed the bar that was in one of the corners of the hotel. The bartender made my marg really good! I'd definitely stay here again as it is in the center of a lot of shops and restaurants. Highly recommend!

Yelp
We were checked into a room that smelled like feces so we had to request a different room, which the staff complied. Things were mostly uneventful for the rest of our trip until we discovered we were charged with a $400 cleaning fee. Luckily we haven't leave Portland yet and was able to inquire further. Come to find out, the lights above the bathroom sink have fallen down and they charged us for that! All I could think about when I saw the pictures is that my 2 year old daughter was just sitting on the countertop to access the sink to wash her face and brush her teeth earlier and had it happened any earlier she could've been hurt! We're talking to the GM to resolve this. UPDATE: The GM refunded the charge after their investigation. And asked us to delete our negative review. So because they came to their senses and refunded the charge, I edited this review to reflect the facts and removed my emotions from it. Things were resolved satisfactorily but I still didn't like how they handled the situation. So there, it's a decent hotel if nothing falls apart during your stay.

Yelp
Putting it simply - hidden fees and rashes. NOT A GOOD EXPERIENCE. My partner and I booked a PNW vacation and stayed here for 4 nights. Advertised and PREpaid a little over $80/night. When we arrived - they very POORLY described a $30 additional fee for some kind of "destination fee". When explained initially, it sounded like the fee was already paid and we would receive some kind of credit to their "snack bar" also credit for the restaurant and bar that wasn't even open and accessible. They also took our card for a $100 charge in case of incident that was later applied to these "destination fees". This seems like poor billing practice and DECEITFUL. On top of the lack of description and overcharging us for something we didn't want, the shower was having maintenance issues. It either had to be very hot or very cold to keep the pipes from shaking. Not a very relaxing hotel experience. My partner doesn't like to ruffle feathers so we decided not to say anything. This was a mistake. I also noticed I developed a rash after staying there. It formed about 2 days into the trip. I don't typically have sensitive skin but assumed it could be associated with the cleaning products they use. I took an antihistamine which would typically help any reaction and they are still there which leads me to believe they may have a bedbug problem! When attempting to get to the bottom of these charges, we were never given access to any kind of supervisor or manager. It was very clear based on the staffs reaction that this is something that happens often and we are not the first or only to have issues with this "destination fee" 0/10 would not recommend.

Yelp
I absolutely love this hotel! I have stayed here a couple of times, when it was under the name Hotel Monaco with my dog, Bella. I recently visited this past '24 Halloween weekend, and it still lives up to my expectations. They remain extremely friendly and accommodating to dog owners. Also, I enjoy that they have unlimited amounts of coffee in the lounge because it is so comfortable and inviting to hang out there. It is a quiet, nice place to grab your laptop and get some work done. And after work, they have a very fun karaoke bar around the corner and a bodega that is open late night. They don't allow dogs there, just a tip, in case you are walking your dog in the wee hours of the morning.

Yelp
Walked in with two functioning knees, hobbled out with torn ligaments. For the same price you could stay in another centrally located hotel downtown with bathroom floors that aren't hazardous AF when wet. Did the survey only to hear, "It's concerning..." You don't say. My ER bill is concerning. Stay literally anywhere else where you can walk out with two functioning knees and avoid a BS "amenity fee."

Yelp
Our flight was cancelled, and the hotel refused to refund us for the night that we did not stay at the hotel. Heads up, they also charge for parking and tack on other random fees. The airline also lost our luggage. When we checked in, we were clear with the Sonesta receptionist that we may see our luggage delivered. We let the next Sonesta receptionist , who took the night shift, know that we may see our luggage delivered. The next day we checked out of the hotel. We went to the airport to look for our suitcase, and we were told that our luggage was delivered to the hotel. This is both an American Airlines and Sonesta failure. We were not informed about the delivery. When we checked out of the hotel they didn't inform us that they'd received our luggage. Sonesta accepted our suitcase and failed to tell us that they'd received it. This is not a complicated situation--Royal Sonesta charges too much for this kind of incompetence: it is not a high-end hotel experience. It's not a high-end hotel.

Yelp
Valet is not worth $52 while staying at this hotel and the location that it's at. They also charge a resort fee so take advantage of the water bottles, Wi-Fi and any of amenities. If you have a pup, they are dog friendly but it is $75 for 2 nights. They provide mini biscuits and doggy bags at the front desk and have a bowl of water in the lobby. The design of the lobby and rooms are gorgeous, there are no complaints there. It's like a dream and influencers perfect selfie stay. The TV is only cable and doesn't provide streaming. TV and remote, very outdated and had some trouble turning on the living room tv. There is ON demand for an extra cost. Lots of their electronics are outdated, and can say it's time for an upgrade. For the price and "luxury" hotel, I'd expect a microwave or at the very least a mini fridge. Especially since we even opted for the upgrade and still no mini fridge? OH! And only 1 robe? For a room that could be for 3... The night shift receptionist is friendlier and funnier than the day shift ones. Both night and day shift valet drivers were top tier tho! Had great conversations and it was the little things they did that made the stay nice.

Yelp
Sanji was awesome! She could tell we were tired and upgraded us to an available suite. Shoutout to Howard also, he was working hard! Place was awesome and the quirky boutique style was so charming and cute and our made a stay a little more enjoyable! The whole staff was awesome. Only thing was I wish there was breakfast available but they did have muffins/cereal bars along with coffee and tea. Thank you Royal Sonesta!

Neal S.

Yelp
Had a fabulous stay. Very friendly staff all around. I love the design and the lobby area is a great place to relax over a cup of coffee in the morning or reading at night. Wonderful design both in rooms and common area. Had a kind of dreamy, whimsical vibe. Will definitely stay again.

Yelp
I needed to get away from Seattle with my kitty cat. I had a long week stay here and truly enjoyed my stay at The Royal Sonesta Portland. The staff is caring. Huge bedroom with fun vintage style decor. It's super clean everywhere. Second floor is for those with pets and it's awesome. New carpeting. Super comfy bed. As other mentioned, yes the $25 resort fee made me frown at first, but the room rate is much lower than other hotels nearby. I took advantage of the fee that gives you $10 credit for meals or cocktails at the adjoining restaurant, another $10 credit for products or services at the adjoining spa/ salon. Two bottles of water in my room everyday. Fun wine tasting. Other hotels such as The Kimpton Vintage next door takes similar amenities fees and you don't get anything you don't get credit for anything. Valet parking the same rate as other hotels. And it is right at the lower level with someone there at all times. It's not located further across the street or elsewhere like some other hotels. Loved my stay and I'll return in a heartbeat.

Yelp
We stayed at the Royal Sonesta Portland for a music festival at the expo center and we had such an amazing time. This hotel is the cutest little boutique hotel I've ever stayed in. I loved all the color and beautiful details. We had a grand king suite with an amazing view of the city. I told the front desk that it reminded me of the Grand Budapest Hotel. "Like" my review if you've seen and love this movie!!! Because you must stay here at some point in your life. I'm giving this hotel 5 stars because of the interior design yes but also the top tier quality individuals they have running it. I believe their name was Mykel? I use Expedia as much as I can for travel rewards and so as usual, I checked in as a third party booking and for some reason they didn't have my reservation. I was a little frustrated at first but then kicked myself in the butt and knew they'd figure it out since I had all my booking information/receipts. We had payed almost $1,000 to stay for the weekend. Luckily they had the same room we booked available. They just needed some time to get it sorted out so they offered us free drinks in their bar and let us leave our bags in the lobby. When we got up to the room, it was absolutely stunning. I thought there would be a pull out sofa in the living room because the room description said 3 people. I believe in the 1 bedroom suites they have a pull out sofa but in the grand kings, the sofa is a crescent shape. It worked fine and Mykel brought up blankets and pillows and extra towels and an extra robe. I had to step out and tell them personally how much it meant to us how hospitable they were and how respectful and never once made us feel like an inconvenience. We were there to dance to the favorite DJ of my best friend and the fiancé of my 3rd person in the party who recently passed away suddenly. The stay here made our trip unforgettable. I cannot recommend this hotel more. Just an absolutely delight. Can't wait to be back.

Yelp
A good choice to stay in Portland, centrally locate in the downtown area adjacent to pearl district. Pros: *Super clean, one of the cleanest hotels I have stayed in. I mean, walls, mirrors, floors, everything well cleaned to detail. *excellent location *efficient front desk, I asked for extra towels and a fridge change, they were there in less than 10 min. *Friendly staff *I appreciate the nice firm mattress, they have invested in great beds. *rooms are quite big for the price Cons *$53 parking- I mean it's Portland this is not Manhattan, relax. Just park outside, we found parking no problem each night and in front of the hotel. *They charge you $10 an hr. if you decide to check in early. Again relax, not even Las Vegas charges, Portland is not a city with lots of tourism, in contrast to other big cities and their prices don't do justice. Very elevated, it's not the four seasons. Overall: more pros than cons, hence I'd stay here again in the event of returning to Portland.

Yelp
I stand by my original 3 star review, despite this Portland Troll, Adrian L., (pictured) DMing me just to call me names. I wonder what happened to Adrian to make him so angry... Must be something in the water.

Ariyah D.

Yelp
Stayed here one night for a quick college tour trip. Had no fridge so we had to request one which wasn't a big deal. Parking was $49 a day which was brought down from $52. I had an automatic $25 day fee charged which was for 2 water bottles, "service" which included things like answering the phones at the front desk and helping with issues, and "complimentary" WiFi. The service was friendly and the rooms were clean but they add the $25 fee no matter how you book so watch out for that add on.

Kaylee A.

Yelp
I just want to say, the hotel is super unique in decoration, but other than location and its looks it is not really worth the stay if it's longer than a day. They do not accommodate for parking and charge 52$ for valet parking, no fridge or microwaves in the rooms which is annoying as we had a longer stay here but not my biggest problem.
google avatar

Frank W.

Yelp
Don't try to get wifi or food or drink. Worst connection problems I've ever had in a hotel. Front Desk kept requiring me to bring my laptop down so they could connect.
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Had high hopes for this downtown property. While staff is friendly, competence is rare. During a four-night stay, our room was only cleaned once! Always excuses...this "never happens." Hardly anyone was staying here, so it's not like they were busy. While several people were at the front desk, only one on duty could do anything. Only one person can check in guests? First set of room keys didn't work. On last day, we were offered a two-hour late check out to make up for the errors. But then we were charged for it when we went to check out. No notes had been made. They removed the charge, but this kind of clown show is not expected at a hotel of this level. I know there are employee shortages, but something needs to change. And quickly.
google avatar

Alexander D.

Yelp
Booked this hotel because of the Tesla chargers they have in the garage. Unfortunately, the front desk encourages other guests to use the spots, even though they knew specifically that I had a Tesla and was planning on using the charger. Now I sit waiting down them to contact these guests and I wasted time waiting for a spot that should've been for Tesla charging.

M W.

Yelp
We had to stay here when the airport caused us to miss our flight. We were so lucky, as the location (in downtown Portland) was perfect, and the entire check in process was easy. Chris, at the front desk, was phenomenal! In fact, he's the reason for the 5 stars review. He went above and beyond, and made sure we were taken care of (despite not having our luggage). The heating system in the room needs some help, and the grout needs some love, but it was easy to overlook all that with how Chris made us feel.

Yelp
Boutique hotel in the Pearl District, really cute rooms with Instagram shot furniture all around, lobby very quaint has free coffee and tea every morning. My stay so far really has been good, staff is very polite and helpful; the area where hotel is situated is a bit sketchy if you don't have experience navigating in a city with "city folks."

Yelp
Great clean place to stay in downtown Portland. It's a very interesting place and front desk Scott was the best! Parking was a bit pricey and not included in your hotel room price. But it is valet parking and if you call down when you are ready to leave, they will have your car ready. Please tip your valet!

Yelp
Everything about our experience was absolutely wonderful. We felt welcome from the moment we arrived. Everyone (valet, concierge desk, and doorman) was so professional, kind, and welcoming. The GM of this hotel should truly celebrate this staff and do everything to keep them.

Yelp
Really cool bird theme. Kicked it, cranked the tunes and enjoyed the p- town vibe! Rock on kids, rock on! This is the suite and its sweet! No amenity fee for bs you won't use anyway. Close to the grub for the food trucks... Stay there , don't be a square...

Yelp
last minute reservation and very pleased - great service, super dog friendly and staff helpful!

Yelp
This is a scam of a hotel. Nice looks, poor everything else. Was charged almost double my booking rate, and after complaint, they got some but not all of that money back to me, so I stayed. The toilet didn't even work properly. They came to fix it and then after the man left, it still didn't work. The fridge in the room also doesn't work. It smells like pee almost everywhere, which isn't inherently their fault, given the location, but it's still something that brings the experience down. Just extremely disappointed in it overall

Yelp
The space was great, but the staff is better. Very nice to speak with. Curtis and the house team are very friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again.

Yelp
We have stayed in several hotels recently and Royal Sonesta was by far the cleanest, and best customer service. The decor is eclectic but so fun and cute. We really loved it.

Yelp
Good location and the on site parking with in and out privileges was so convenient. We stayed in a corner king suite and it was the comfiest hotel stay we've had in ages. Cozy bed, quiet, good blackout curtains, friendly staff. We'll seek out other Royal Sonesta properties.

Yelp
Up until check out this place was a five all the way. The whole place is lovely and the food at the restaurant was great. After check out we headed down to get our car only to find out the valet fee was $52 for less than 24 hours!?! Huh?? The valet was super nice and wildly apologetic. Went back in to ask about it at the desk and that guy was also nice and apologetic. Enter the manager - he was an absolute condescending, belittling jerk. It was so unfortunate. A nice attitude and explanation goes a long way. My point to him was that this fee needs to be a bit more forthcoming and he just went full throttle mean. Paying $52 is one thing but being spoken to in that manner is another. Downtown Portland is struggling so bringing people in seems like the thing to do - not completely alienating them. I will not step foot in that place again.

Yelp
Cute, boutique hotel! Room was smaller than it looked online, but worked fine for us. Clean and nice amenities. Parking was steep at $45/night, but worth it because it was an easy in and out.

Yelp
I talked to a customer service rep who aid they never reserve over the phone after talking to a booing agent 20 minutes prior. Messy and rude.

Yelp
Not a good stay. We used to bring our dog here for years when it was a Kimpton hotel. Everything is the same except now they charge for pets $75 per night without any mention of it, when a hotel buys out a very well known Kimpton hotel known for its amazing pet friendly policies, the new hotel should mention it - after we clearly told them we have stayed here for many, many years prior. We never received a dog bed after calling down twice, but were charged a fee with no dog bowls, bed or usuals that the pets would receive. The manager Daniel is rude and this is no longer the hotel it used to be! We don't recommend staying here.

Yelp
I stayed here when it was a Kimpton many years ago...and fell in love with it. Gorgeous and unique decor all throughout the building, great customer service, and dog-friendly!

Yelp
Still the same feeling as the last time we stayed. My husband and I were not looking to stay again we were just asking about our points to visit another Sonesta and again no o e at the front desk and when they did arrive to answer our questions no answers were given. It was a "please call the info number"or the just plain I Don't Know. This place needs to be condemned and Fast

Yelp
Just stayed here for one night as my wife and I were moving to Portland. Amidst the broken, vandalized buildings and the army of homeless in downtown Portland, Royal Sonesta was an oasis. My wife and I were seriously impressed with every facet of this hotel -- the decor, the customer service, and the comfort. The gentleman at the front desk named Scott checked us in and was very helpful and friendly. He followed up with us after we checked in to make sure we were happy with the room -- we were. The elevators were fancy, with wood and felt paneling. The room itself was amazing. Everything was very clean, and the soaps and lotions in the bathroom were all very high quality. The bed was comfy and clean. Not only that, but this really fancy hotel is even pet friendly, which is the main reason we chose it -- we have two cats. So our well-behaved cats roamed our room while we relaxed. I would readily stay here again and would easily recommend this hotel to others.

Yelp
My husband and I stayed here for a 7 day trip and enjoyed every second of our stay. The location was perfectly in the middle of all Portland has to offer and the employees are some of the best I have encountered. Kathryn and Mark in the valet area were amazing to deal with. Kathryn always managed to ask about our day and recommend random places and things for us to explore throughout Portland. The front desk employees were also great. A major shoutout to Karla who always managed to help us and extend our stay for 2 additional days with no difficulty. The house keeping staff were also great and kept the hotel extremely clean. 10/10 would recommend this hotel to everyone traveling to Portland.

Yelp
Had an amazing stay. The location was perfect and the room was both spacious and comfortable. What made the stay over the top was how wonderful the staff was. Kathryn and Mark at the vallet were so fast and a pleasure to deal with. Kathryn was always eger to hear about our day and give recommendations for new adventures. Karla at the front desk help resolve a tricky reservation mix up with ease and a great attitude. Would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Yelp
Why is there a GIANT mirror in font of the Queen size bed? And why is it glued to the wall? And most importantly,,,, why is it a double sided mirror..

Yelp
I recently visited Portland for the first time and I chose the Royal Sonesta because it seemed like a great central location, but I'd be lying if I said the website's photos of their adorable decor wasn't a main selling point. I'm happy to report that it's even better in person! The lounge area is so cute and t's a great spot for meeting up in the morning. My friends and I enjoyed hanging out and playing chess there. The rooms are really nice too, my husband and I stayed in a deluxe king room and it was incredibly spacious! We even had a sitting area with a super comfy couch and arm chairs, it was a perfect spot for decompressing and chatting after our long days of sightseeing. The bed was really comfy as well, and the bedroom and sitting area each had their own TV. Before booking, we noticed that the hotel is pet friendly, which made us wonder if we would find pet hair in the rooms, but we didn't and our room was perfectly clean. And as a bonus, we got to see a lot of cute pets in the lobby! We even met a guest who was traveling with her adorable pet kitten :). The surrounding area around the hotel is a bit rough with many run-down buildings and sadly many homeless folks, but that's difficult to escape in an urban downtown place like Portland. It's still a great location, especially if you're hoping to explore the city on foot. A lot of attractions like Powell's Books, China Town, tons of breweries and more are within easy walking distance!

Yelp
We enjoyed Royal Sonesta's excellent service, expansive lounge room, "lobby market" option for snacks and drinks available even late, clean rooms, decor, and location in downtown Portland. The garage parking for guests felt a bit high ($45/night) but certainly secure and easily accessible. Overall happy with our stay and would come back.

Yelp
Rude, elitist staff/policies. . I entered into the parking garage from the street- it was snowing and cold out and I needed directions to somewhere nearby. I was told by the valet employee that this was private property and no one was allowed there (despite him conversing with a couple right at that moment). I was told to leave out of the car exit, and on my way out I heard the valet apologize for the interruption. He, and the couple he was talking to, went on to discuss how they like and approve of keeping undesirables off the property. Not sure if treating people so poorly is hotel policy?

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place! Rooms were very clean and very nice! The front desk was also always very helpful and the valet was always nice as well! They really take care of you here and I highly recommend this place for anyone who is in downtown Portland for a few nights it is in a good location for things to do in the city as well! Will most likely be back next time in Portland!

Yelp
very okay. the room was fine, but the tub didn't drain properly. also no microwave, fridge, or coffee maker in the room. parking is VERY expensive, but if you don't use it your car will probably be broken into. we left a day early because there was a drive by shooting literally right outside the hotel. very traumatic. they didn't charge us for the last night that we didn't up staying , but no compensation was offered.
