Yelp
Yesterday on a whim after visiting LSU's campus a coworker and I happened upon this gem of a restaurant in the downtown Baton Rouge area. I had never eaten authentic Jamaican cuisine, but my coworker had during a destination wedding in Jamaica. My coworker ordered a small Curry Shrimp, green beans, and Jamaican rice. I ordered a small Jerk Chicken-dark meat (leg quarter), Jamaican rice, and callaloo. I asked for a vegetable item reflective of Jamaican cuisine. The chef suggested callaloo, which is a Jamaican green traditionally made from amaranth. I am unsure if this was amaranth or substitute green combination, but the greens were spicy and flavorfully delicious. The tender grilled jerk chicken and Jamaican rice were equally delicious. I tried one of my coworker's large shrimp, which was tasty and very fresh. Both of us were pleased and will certainly return to try other menu items. As an aside, the restaurant moved to this location on St. Charles St. from its original Florida Blvd. location near CATS terminal. A sign in the window informed patrons it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Royal Taste of Jamaica is a positive addition to Downtown Baton Rouge and the community at large.
