"There aren’t many places for Jamaican food in Baton Rouge, yet it’s home to one restaurant serving up some of the best of the cuisine in the region. Royal Taste of Jamaica, just a few years old, draws visitors from far and wide to its small storefront downtown. David and Miya Suarez serve a concise menu of standouts, starting with eight varieties of patties and including plates of brown stew chicken, curry goat, ackee and saltfish, and oxtails." - Clair Lorell

I tried this place at the Cann fest. I ordered the oxtails (first timer.) Wasn’t disappointed with the taste, but it would’ve been nice if all my oxtail pieces were a good size. I’m not sure if $28 was too much/less, but I’m happy with my purchase.

The food was really good I had the chicken curry with a side of mango apple salad and rice and peas.the rice and peas went perfectly with my chicken curry. The mango apple salad was really refreshing and the juice that she made is really good she also gives big portions so you def won't be hungry after words she is also really funny most places dont interact with the customers like she do. They were games so you can have fun while you wait for you food to come out it didn't take long for it to come out either

The restaurant was clean. The owners were friendly! The food was amazing….delicious, fresh, and clean! Will definitely visit anytime I’m in Baton Rouge. The owner Mia was sweet, warm, and welcoming! I ordered the jerk chicken (dark meat) and callaloo as my veggies with a spicy beef meat pie! 🤤🤤

This is my first time trying this place after thinking about it a few times. It looked like a family owned restaurant with a very cozy and warm ambiance. Their service is pretty amazing. Very friendly, and we're very humble. They gave good suggestions about their dishes. We tried their oxtail plate, Jerk Chicken white plate, and their pasta with Jerk Chicken. The pasta was a Friday special deal. Everything tasted pretty amazing and authentic. We also ordered their fresh made pineapple juice, and i would go back there even if thats the only thing they sold, but with their amazing food, service, and the vibe ill surely be going back.

Google
This is the spot. We got patties, curry goat, and the jerk burger. All were freaking fire. Personally thought the jerk chicken patty was on another level. The lemonade is also insane! So fresh, super sweet, and you can tell it’s handmade since it has a little pulp in it. The people there are super nice and honestly really quick to get your food out given the care it takes to make those dishes. Lastly, the vibes inside are crazy. I loved the art and music. So we had a super pleasant time enjoying our lunch in there. This is the spot.

Nikk B Local Guide·22 reviews I completely agree with this review I could not have said it better! And this was from five months ago!!!!! Today is 6/19/2025 Cabbage and rice full of pepper no seasoning, rice was on mushy side. The oxtails were under seasoned. Spent too much money for the 3 small pieces of meat and not being able to eat the sides because of the amount of pepper. Will not try again! Sorry please do better 5 months ago Dine in | Dinner | $50–100 Royal Taste of Jamaica.... Does not fit the description of the food I received today.. To spend 65$ on 2 plates and not to be able to enjoy it because it was so full of pepper and not to mention the portions are a insult to Any Authentic Restaurant. Rice,Peas and cabbage are very inexpensive. I support the hustle but it hard for everyone. Coming from Florida where real Authentic jamaican food can be found this could never compete. NO customer service which is not like Jamaicans they are very welcoming especially to people who patronage their business.. This one start is too much for the service I received today. I paid 65$ for not even 20$ worth of food.. The mac and cheese was 4$ and it was a 1/2 of a serving.... Again God is not pleased...

I think they might just be BEST Jamaica 🇯🇲 food in the Baton Rouge area.

Yelp
Royal Taste of Jamaica in Baton Rouge is hands down the best Jamaican food I've ever had! Their oxtails are out of this world... the absolute best!! When I was attending law school at Southern University and working at the attorney general's office just down the street, I found myself here weekly. The jerk chicken? Bomb!! The curry shrimp? Bomb!! Even their burgers are unique and delicious. Every dish here is packed with flavor and authenticity. I absolutely love this restaurant and miss it so much. Royal Taste of Jamaica, please bring one to the West Coast - I need this in my life again!

Yelp
I've never had Jamaican food before but I'll definitely be coming back! We had the chicken curry, shrimp curry, and oxtails for lunch with two cheesy beef Jamaican patties. Everything was so delicious and filling beyond belief. I also had a pineapple ginger soda that I'd get again. I did have to wait 20-30 minutes for my order, but I noticed most people didn't wait long before their food was up so I think it just depends on what you order. The front guy wasn't rude or pushy with anything while I ordered. Really good experience all in all!

Mary L.

Yelp
Service was great, oxtails were really good. I also ordered the curry goat but they were running out and I ended up with nothing but bones. Very disappointing but I could taste the potential. It's the cleanest Jamaican restaurant I've ever went to. I would recommend you try it out. It's pretty pricey but what isn't these days.

Adriana O.

Yelp
I love this place. The oxtails are amazing and and plantain are delicious. Their rice and peas are also delicious--not dried out or stingy on the peas . And the coco bread is divine. I've tried 3 of the patties and prefer the traditional reg and spicy beef patties. Two things that kind of leave a sour taste in my mouth: 1) I feel like they are unreasonably high. 2) Order way ahead of time if you need it to be ready for pick-up. I ended up waiting more than 10 minutes past my expected wait time even though I ordered ahead of time.

Andrea B.

Yelp
As the people are very friendly, their food is good! I love their jerk chicken especially on Fridays with the Rasta pasta. The pineapple lemonade is very good!

Green B.

Yelp
They pressure they Rasta pasta go hard and they jerk chicken @ salmon a must go to see for yourself

Yelp
I finally got to try this spot one Friday evening. I arrived around 6pm. The restaurant has plenty of seating inside. The owner was very friendly and patient. He explained the different drink options. I ordered 2 white jerk chicken plates and one oxtail plate. I had cabbage and Mac and cheese as sides. All came with rice. I think I paid around $80. Now I must disclose that I don't really order Jamaican food so my palate isn't used to the flavor. Overall I think the food was a tad too spicy for my family. We ate it but it's not anything that we would just have to order again. If you like spicy food then the place is perfect.

Michael H.

Yelp
We stopped in for a tasty lunch and were delighted to have found this restaurant. The service was very friendly and prompt, and our jerk chicken plates (served with rice and callaloo) were wonderful! Seasoned perfectly. We're excited to go back.

Destinique D.

Yelp
My brother recommended this restaurant. He's never eaten Jamaican food before but he liked it. He said the jerk wasn't really spicy but there was flavor there. So I went on my lunch break. Now I love Jamaican food and I've eaten a lot of it. The chicken was good however the amount of food and price didn't match up for me. My rice was missing the beans like barely there and I had Mac and cheese as a side I should have just gotten cabbage. I was charged $4 extra for what equal to maybe two teaspoons of Mac n cheese that was ridiculous and it lacked flavor and was very oily. That broke my heart. If your going to charge me extra at least give me more than a sample size. I'm used to rice and peas being included with jerk chicken and then two sides for the price I should not have had an empty compartment on my plate. I gave three stars because the chicken was good and while they didn't have Ting they did have Champagne Kola. Would I go back I would because the chicken was good.

Joe W.

Yelp
I usually get the same thing every time I come here, oxtails, rice and peas and cabbage. It's amazing. I can't even explain it. They are so good the meat just falls off the bone. The cost is of them are is right on point, and definitely the best in Baton Rouge. Service is good, very authentic, I actually feel like I'm getting a taste of Jamaica. A royal taste. the restaurant itself is painted with a Jamaican color scheme but I never stay to eat in. There is always people eating in though.

Yelp
I wanted to update my previous review to discuss how Royal Taste of Jamaica has moved to 320 St Charles St, in Downtown Baton Rouge! This new facility allows indoor seating and is convenient to everything Downtown. What hasn't changed is the great Jamaican cuisine! The spicy succulent meats and savory sides have just the same homemade flavor they have always had. Come check out the new & improved location, and enjoy a deliciously different meal option!

Marieca L.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant at the recommendation of a friend. It is a very small building with some tables for eating in. I got the jerk chicken plate with rice and cabbage. Everything was delicious and the owners were very nice. My only complaint is that you don't get enough sauce on the chicken. There was a light drizzle on each piece. It was .80 for additional sauce which was provided super sparingly in a tiny cup. Regardless I would visit again if I'm in that area. Jerk Chicken

caleb h.

Yelp
Too pricy even for downtown Baton Rouge. I mean we're talking chicken leg quarters, rice and beans...it was good but not great. About $5 a plate too high.

Steven G.

Yelp
Yesterday on a whim after visiting LSU's campus a coworker and I happened upon this gem of a restaurant in the downtown Baton Rouge area. I had never eaten authentic Jamaican cuisine, but my coworker had during a destination wedding in Jamaica. My coworker ordered a small Curry Shrimp, green beans, and Jamaican rice. I ordered a small Jerk Chicken-dark meat (leg quarter), Jamaican rice, and callaloo. I asked for a vegetable item reflective of Jamaican cuisine. The chef suggested callaloo, which is a Jamaican green traditionally made from amaranth. I am unsure if this was amaranth or substitute green combination, but the greens were spicy and flavorfully delicious. The tender grilled jerk chicken and Jamaican rice were equally delicious. I tried one of my coworker's large shrimp, which was tasty and very fresh. Both of us were pleased and will certainly return to try other menu items. As an aside, the restaurant moved to this location on St. Charles St. from its original Florida Blvd. location near CATS terminal. A sign in the window informed patrons it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Royal Taste of Jamaica is a positive addition to Downtown Baton Rouge and the community at large.

Yelp
Love this place! The food was superb. We tried the curried goat and the jerk chicken. Both were amazing. The sides, drinks, and cake were all great too! And the kind people running, the place were very pleasant and helpful with suggestions when we asked. Will definitely return the next time I'm in town.

G P.

Yelp
Here in town for my sister's graduation and was looking for a late lunch spot. Tried a few places and ended up here but decided to take our meals to go. After a long day, this absolutely hit the spot! Not only was the staff friendly but the food was fantastic. We got the goat curry, oxtails, and jerk chicken with various sides. All very good, but the jerk chicken had a unique flavor different from other jerk chicken I've had. Glad we ended up here!

Sasa K.

Yelp
Small portions and over-priced, but tastes good Preferred jerk chicken over ox-tail! Eat more Jamaican food people!!

David S.

Yelp
It's the food truck experience but with walls, air conditioning, and a bathroom! Typically I avoid work week lunches that involve styrofoam plates and plastic wear, but ABSOLUTELY making an exception for Royal Taste of Jamaica! I had the brown stew chicken and coworker had the jerk chicken. Each had a side of rice and cabbage. The cabbage was the hidden gem - soaked full of mouth watering seasoning. The stew was absolutely delicious, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a juicier Jamaican chicken experience full of rice-drowning goodness! The jerk chicken is the staple, a great first impression to Jamaican cuisine if this is your first time. Hoping they get popular and start offering table service soon, since their food is deserving of hard plates and metal silverware!

Tanesha Y.

Yelp
Omg I saw this off Tiktok and it's absolutely the best!! You will not be disappointed

Tanya F.

Yelp
Love me some Jerk and curry chicken. The cabbage is always seasoned to perfection! I love this lil spot. Favorite lunch go to.

Courtney E.

Brianne J.

Yelp
Was looking for some good Jamaican cuisine, and we found it here. Th staff was helpful and friendly. Well worth the drive. We will be back.

Robin B.

Yelp
It's hard to find oxtail in this Podunk city. And this is done so well! I hope these guys stay open! We need good, different food choices in Baton Rouge. I love seafood, but sometimes I need something different.

Charles L.

Yelp
This is a Take Out place with a few tables remaining from Christina's. Walls are blinding bright yellow. Expect service in Styrofoam with plastic utensils intended for Take Out; chicken and oxtail were more bone than meat, plantains and rice were good - food was tasty as other reviews indicate; I'll go back when they are ready for Prime Time.

Larry M.

Yelp
OMG! If you love Jamaican cuisine this is hands down the best place in town. Service was an easy 10/10! Don't tell my mom but they have the best mac n cheese and yams I've ever had. Their Jerk Chicken is off the chain! Atmosphere was very small business traditional Jamaican style just the way it's supposed to be. They're so good I'm on my way there right now.

Jeff ..

Yelp
I had the rasta pasta and my wife had ox tails and both were delicious. Definitely recommend if in the BR downtime area.

Richard J.

Yelp
This is an outstanding Jamaican restaurants. Their oxtails are second to none with a delectable gravy served over perfectly cooked rice. The plantains were cooked perfectly with just the right touch of sweetness. They have a wide assortment of beverages that aren't sold at most American restaurants. This is easily one of the finest eateries and definitely the best Jamaican restaurant in Baton Rouge.

Eve W.

Yelp
Finally tried this spot! Got it delivered. It was tasty. I had never had oxtails before. I'm glad I tried it!

Tony L.

Yelp
I decided to come here on a hidden whim and man, it was well worth it. I ordered the Large jerk chicken (dark) with rice and cabbage along with a side of la carte of ox tail. Both of the items was ASTOUNDING! The chicken had that Caribbean spice that I crave, the rice complimented the chicken, and the cabbage melded well with everything. The ox tail.... so gelatinous and tender.. WOWS! This hidden gem is a solid 10/10 in my books and I definitely be coming back.

Glenesha G.

Yelp
Great food.. oxtails and goat are my fave.. rice and peas is a must..sweet potatoes are good too

Michael C.

Yelp
This is my new favorite restaurant in baton rouge. The oxtail, jerk chicken, and all the sides had the perfect amount of spice and flavor. The fresh pineapple lemonade was super tasty. I loved it!

Stanley S.

Yelp
Best authentic Caribbean cuisine in town i recommend the oxtails but everything I've tried has been delicious prices are reasonable and portions are great

Darri S.

Yelp
Finally tried the Oxtail.... God damn! C'est magnifique! A fu**** party in my mouth.

Tee G.

Yelp
We ordered the Ox tail and the Curry Chicken plates. The ox tail was so tender that it fell off the bone at the touch of the fork. The rice and vegetables on both plates were equally delicious! I also ordered the beef patties and they were to die for! Not to mention, the inside of the restaurant was very clean.

Greg J.

Yelp
Always fresh and good. Jerk chicken and cabbage with rice and peas is a must. Will try the jerk burger next.

Rebecca W.

Yelp
I don't remember the last time I ate authentic jerk chicken. I was so happy to try Royal Taste of Jamaica at a food pop-up they did at Southern Cofé. My husband and I ordered a jerk chicken plate and were so bummed that we didn't order two of them. I think we we went over the chicken bone several times searching for more meat on it. That jerk chicken was so incredibly delicious. I found out that they had a spot on Florida Street and will soon be moving into the new Millennium Park. I can't wait. In the meantime, I know that I can get my fix at their current location. If you want to check them out, be sure to follow their social media pages for their open times because they do change. So, next time I visit, I'll need to try their oxtails or their curry goat. All of this typing is making my mouth water. Do yourself a favor, after reading this, promise me you'll pay them a visit!

Emily D.

Yelp
I wanted to write a review before I even got the food. First, the location is awesome. Super convenient and right by the convention center. It's a little hidden, but once found, Royal Taste won't be forgotten. Second, one I walked in, the staff treated me like family and carried themselves with happiness, which means a lot to me. Food always taste better when made with love & you can feel that from this place. The ONLY ONLY ONLY complaint is I wish the jerk chicken had a little more sauce. I was craving more. Next time I'll just ask to add extra sauce. So glad to have a taste of travels nestled right into Baton Rouge. Also don't forget to ask about the cocoa bread

Ray C.

Yelp
I haven't had Jamaican food much in my life but I can easily say this was the best Jamaican food I had to this point in my life! The service was outstanding the guy who took our order was super friendly and helped with our ordering and gave us recommendations. We ordered the oxtail which came with a side and rice which we ordered cabbage with it. We also got jerk chicken with cabbage and rice as well. The Jerk Chicken was strait fire, the chicken wasn't piping hot but it was still dam good and had good flavor, the cabbage was solid and the rice it came with complimented the whole dish as well. The star of the show was the oxtails, which oh my goodness was delicious. I have to say that was the best oxtails I have ever had in my life, it was braised in some awesome broth to give it such amazing flavor. I honestly will definitely be back many times because the oxtails is amazing and the jerk chicken was really good too!

Shrone T.

Yelp
A co-worker was telling me about this place so I decided to go by and buy a small plate. I wasn't disappointed I called in a jerk chicken (dark) over white rice and cabbage plate and it was delicious. For some authentic Jamaican food in the downtown Baton Rouge area I would recommend this business. The staff was very friendly and informative of the menu.

Vicki H.

Yelp
This little hole in the wall have some bomb as food!! I order the oxtails and the jerk chicken the oxtail were good but that jerk chicken was as good as the ones I ate in Jamaica.. it was delicious

Morpheous S.

Yelp
As I can change my mind, to be fair, I tried this place again to ensure it wasn't a one-off experience. Tried carry out. I stand by my original opinion. Its a rice plate with some gravy, with a little piece of bony meat, few baby carrots and two lima beans. Three table spoons of cabbage on the side. All for $26. I should have had some TJ Ribs... I really don't mind paying for quality and value. I have made my final donation here.

Bre M.

Yelp
As you can see I already started eating it, this is by far the best Jamaican restaurant is BR.

Serena H.

Yelp
Very distasteful and disrespectful employees: I told an older lady, "Hello, in an attempt to continue my order" when I was rudely interrupted by her. Her comment to another customer was also completely uncalled for, "Baton rouge residents have zero manners" so show her that and keep your money to yourself since she thinks so minimalistic of us as residents who supports their small business. I am very unsure what her issue was but she should really check her attitude prior to coming to work. Save you time and money. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND, IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS!

Melody N.

Yelp
Come here for the oxtails! Everything was great but wow these really impressed me. Great staff and great food! Love having this in town.

Shevelle F.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I had a variety to support the black business. EVERYTHING was good. The burger had the right amount of spice, as well as the jerk chicken. The mild meat pie was the best that I've had, and the oxtail, hhhuuummmm-um good! Will definitely be back to try the desserts this weekend!

Heather S.

Yelp
Food is always fresh and delicious. I was able to order some.of the patties as well... spicy beef, curry shrimp and curry chicken... all delicious! The owners are always kind and friendly. I can't wait to go back.

Tirzah H.

Yelp
I enjoyed the offerings from this establishment. Everything was perfectly seasoned and freshly prepared. It was a step in the right direction to break up the monotony that plagues the food culture of Baton Rouge, LA. I will be back!

Breyonne S.

Yelp
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I will be back !!! Service was amazing but the food was out of this world!!! Everything hot and loaded with flavor! My new favorite spot
