As a bit of a burger connoisseur, I like to think I know my way around a good patty. So, when I checked out Royale With Cheese in Detroit, I went in with a discerning palate. My take? It's... alright.
The Pulp Fiction theme is definitely the star here. For fans of the movie, it's genuinely a fun, nostalgic trip with clever little nods everywhere. They clearly put effort into the ambiance, making it a decent spot for a casual hang if you're into the film's vibe.
But for me, as someone who really appreciates a standout burger, the food itself landed firmly in the "just okay" category. While some of their more creative ideas, like the Kruncher burger or the Fried Mac & Cheese bites, pique interest, the core burger patties often felt under-seasoned or a bit bland. They lean heavily on the toppings, sauces, and cheese to carry the flavor, which isn't always a bad thing, but it left me wanting more from the beef itself. I've had better, more distinctive flavor from patties elsewhere. And honestly, the buns could sometimes be a bit soggy or not adequately toasted, which really impacts the overall texture of a good burger.
The "Royale Fries" are generally solid--crispy potato wedges that hold their own, especially the Garlic Parmesan. But other appetizers, like the Nacho Cheese Ravioli, frankly reminded me of something you'd pull from a freezer bag and warm up.
Service is usually efficient, fitting that "fast-food but good food" ethos, and the place feels clean. My main hang-up, though, comes down to value. For what you get, especially if the burger isn't truly knocking it out of the park, the prices can feel a bit steep. An $11 "just a burger" needs to deliver more than just "good enough."
So, while Royale With Cheese offers a pleasant enough visit, particularly if you're there for the Pulp Fiction novelty, it didn't quite hit the mark for me as a top-tier burger destination. It's fine if you're in the area and craving a themed burger, but I wouldn't make a special trip expecting a truly exceptional culinary experience.
