"Although first built in 1898, the Royalton didn't burst onto the scene really until 1988, when Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck made it one of their projects and decked it out with daring, experimental design that drew a very trendy crowd. In 2007, the hotel underwent its first renovation since Starck's initial vision, with a redesign led by goop favorites Roman & Williams; the dark, moody lobby epitomizes their signature warm, modern style. Meanwhile, the rooms upstairs (larger ones have actual wood-burning fireplaces in the winter) are crisp and light, with white bedding and mirrored bathroom tiles. If you're staying in Midtown but need to be south of all the grand dames off Central Park, it's a great pick."

A History of New York Through Some of NYC’s Best Restaurants

"A 1990s hot-spot inside a Philippe Starck–designed hotel that became a daily staging ground for Condé Nast editors and media power players, with a tiny number of banquettes effectively reserved for top editors and an atmosphere that broadcast social hierarchy as much as it offered food." - The Editors

We stayed at this hotel in June 2025. We arrived late and the receptionist was very helpful helping us order food to be delivered. However, we were very disappointed that there were no vending machines for waters, snacks, or anything. There was no bar or restaurant. This place has so much potential because of location, location, location. Also, it's very cute in the lobby. The pandemic is over and they need to open up services. Also, unfortunately, the room was rather creepy. I got the feeling that it hadn't been deep cleaned in years. The bathroom was beautiful with a great big tub. I would have preferred a separate walk in shower. Although the location was wonderful, we will not be returning. I'm also disappointed that American Airlines had this as an option for a hotel. They need to visit places before recommending them to their patrons.

My wife and stayed at The Royalton recently and it was a homecoming of sorts - we used to stay here annually for a work trip for years. It’s been ten years or more since we have been back. It’s been refurbished since then, looks awesome! Staff was great. The only issue is there is no restaurant, but don’t let that stop you. Across the street is the historic Algonquin - with the famous Round Table. We’ve stayed in both in the past over the years. We liked staying at The Royalton and dining at the Algonquin on this trip. There is also a fantastic diner to the left of the Algonquin that you can get take-out food and bring it to your room. The proximity to Times Square, Empire State Building and Central Park makes it an incredible hub to enjoy NYC - and simply walking. Overall a fantastic weekend. My wife was a guest speaker at Columbia University and that event got rebooked again for next September. We will be back doing this all over again!

Google
Location is good for first-time visitors wanting to be near the action of Times Square, Broadway, but probably not if you want to visit the trendy shopping areas of Soho, Nolita, West Village etc. We liked that there was a nice diner (Red Flame) just opposite the hotel! :) As many other reviews have touched on, the hotel has close to no amenities (they have a gym). No pool, no coffee/tea machine, no water provided in the rooms (I did just see another review that guests were provided water when asked, but usually, if you are offering free water, you would provide it in the rooms, no? Most guys, myself included, would not assume to think water is available upon request) Also no bar, no food options in the hotel, no business centre. The room was spacious enough, but the room just felt cold and not welcoming (not sure if it's the lighting, the floors that felt hollow, etc). The bed and pillows were not comfortable and overall the chair, sofa did not feel clean. The service at the Front Desk was amazing, friendly whenever we stopped by to say hi, and always willing to answer any questions that we may have. The one thing that really soured our stay was the lack of service from the bell service/doormen. When we stored our luggage after checking-out, we were specifically reminded (by the bellman) that tipping goes a long way for them - which I understand completely, I always tip where there is good service - We decided to tip when we stored our luggages. When we came back to get our luggages, my husband and I were obviously struggling with our 4 full sized luggages and heavy backpacks to our Uber and not once did the bell man assist us with our luggages. What infuriated me the most was that he even asked "Is that your Uber?" then when I said "Yes", he continued to stand idly by while I struggled with the luggage down the flight of stairs. That was not at all a nice experience, and I doubt I will stay here again.

Google
It’s is a dated hotel so it that is what you are going for that’s great. There is nothing wrong with it just older design with smaller elevators, hallways and rooms with no view to speak of on the lower floors. Again though nothing wrong with it and its proximity to Times Square is nice just not the best place to stay in NYC

Google
Book it! The bad reviews are ridiculous. Location perfect to everything. Room was large ( queen room, standard) so cute. Shower was great. Quiet never heard any sounds! Staff was beyond. They even held our luggage all day upon check out for nothing! Cutest hotel. Yes no bar or restaurant but everything is super close so not a problem

ERROR ERROR

Google
Incredible service, gave us free water bottles whenever asked, upgraded our room just cause we asked, and gave us an extra blanket cause it was cold. Our room was great, big and had a couch, bathroom was beautiful with all surfaces being glass (water pressure is a bit intense tho), and it was very clean. Huge downstairs lobby with couches, computers, and tables. Great location, very close to Times Square and the midtown flixbus. Overall just the perfect hotel for our trip, will come again.

Google
Where do I even begin? This place looked incredible online, but upon arrival, I was disappointed. The receptionist was friendly and helped us get a better room, but it was still dusty, dirty, and had dirty linens, the bathroom was dirty, the room smelled like mold. There were no cups, coffee maker, or anything else useful in the room. It was also very dark and outdated. The lobby bar and restaurant have been closed since the pandemic, and the advertisements on the website are misleading. If I had known the rooms looked like that, I would have never booked. This was my son’s first trip to NYC, and they never brought the blow- up mattress. I had to call down for towels and other amenities. The location was great, but in all reality, this hotel needs a major makeover, better marketing with up-to-date advertisements, and the bar and restaurant need to reopen. This was by far my worst stay at an hotel in NYC.

Google
Great service from doormen, check in and housekeeping. Everyone was kind, thoughtful and friendly. A special shout out to Neal who works at the Royalton and recommended this space for a work trip. Easily accessible to Penn Station, NJT and Port Authority. Extremely walkable to all key tourist spots in Midtown. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
3.5 stars. I stayed at the Royalton for a 4-night business trip as it was the closest hotel to my company's NY office. I found it to be comfortable and felt accommodated during my stay. I would agree with everyone here on the point that this hotel could use big update and some additional amenities (glasses in the room, coffee maker, more hangers, etc.). The carpets and furniture are pretty worn down and dated. Besides that, I thought that this was a decent stay in the city given the price. My room was large and very quiet, which I was concerned would not be the case as I was right next to the elevator. I especially appreciated the staff here. Upon arriving, my room reeked of perfume. The front desk was swift at getting me a different room without any bother. I was greeted every time I entered the lobby. On my last day, the front desk held my bags while I went shopping, and gave me access to an office suite with a bathroom so that I could freshen up, repack my bags and head to the airport. The bellhop was very efficient at getting me a cab to the airport as well.

Yelp
Service was fine here. Lobby was super dark. Rooms were very strange. Everyone in our group said how weird their rooms were. Could definitely use some updating.

Les W.

Yelp
room was ok. No coffee or food or drink in the hotel. If you are an early riser, the local diners/restaurants open at 6AM. I would come back again, but I would bring my own coffee maker. Les

Yelp
Dirty, old, no amenities at all. The staff was nice and helpful and the location was great...but that being said.. that was all it had going for it.

Yelp
Easy check in process. Front desk person covered all the necessary details of our stay and what additional charges (resort fee) there would be. Room was simple and comfortable. Good shower pressure and hot water. Only USB ports (2 ports) on one side of bed which was a bit inconvenient but we managed. Otherwise bed was comfortable and room looked and felt clean. Only a one night stay for us. Actual hotel does not have a restaurant or bar but there are several with on the same street within the same city block.

Yelp
Beware: This place is nothing like the pictures! The photos online are completely misleading--likely taken back in 2006 right after a renovation that hasn't been maintained since. This establishment barely qualifies as a hotel and is in serious need of a full gut and remodel. To begin with, the entrance doesn't resemble what's shown online at all. Even our Lyft driver had trouble finding it due to the lack of signage. Upon arrival, we were met with a long staircase--no ramp, no assistance, and no staff in sight. The dim, unwelcoming entryway looked more like a back door, made worse by a peeling paint job and poor lighting. As soon as you walk in, you're hit with a strong, unpleasant odor that lingers throughout the entire property. The interior is so dimly lit it feels like they're either missing lightbulbs--or perhaps trying to hide the dirt. There are no restaurants or functioning bars in the building, despite what you might expect from a hotel. There's also no visible maintenance or staff presence, making it clear that upkeep is not a priority here. Navigating the building is a task in itself. The journey to the elevator includes uneven flooring and awkward transitions that make pulling a suitcase a hassle. The elevators are incredibly small--we had to turn sideways just to fit ourselves and our bags. Once we reached our floor, we were greeted by more musty air, stained and ripped carpets, damaged walls, and a generally neglected appearance that resembled an abandoned school basement. The room itself was the final straw. The carpet was loose, dirty, and not even properly installed along the baseboards--resembling outdoor carpeting without any padding. The furniture was outdated and grimy, and the walls were visibly dirty. Sitting on the couch felt questionable, and there was no way we were going to sleep in that bed or use that bathroom. We checked out within 15 minutes of checking in. That's how bad it was. We couldn't imagine spending even one night there--let alone four. Despite the "no refund" policy, we were prepared to walk away from the full cost just to get out of that place. They claim to be a 4.5-star hotel, but this place isn't even worth half a star. At least Motel 6 will leave the light on for you--this place can't even manage that.

Yelp
It's my first time at The Royalton Hotel and it didn't disappoint. From the entrance we were greeted and assisted by Neil, and helped us with our luggages. We were early for the check in time and the room was not available yet but they allowed us to leave our luggages at the hotel. Front Desk Staff Stefano was awesome as he assisted us in expediting to make our room ready for check in. He went above and beyond to assist my mom in storing my mom's medicines at the fridge while we wait for our room. The following day, Stefano and Johanna had a fridge delivered to our room. The room is clean and spacious, have a great view, a small desk, clean toilet. The location is walking distance to Bryant Park, Empire State Building, Times Square and a lot of nearby shops and restaurants. Highly recommended. Check it out!

Yelp
Stayed for a business trip , they booked it obviously. Looks OK from the pics but all the 5 star reviews have to be AI or a scam. It looks ok from the outside and lobby. Rooms are disgusting. I'm talking about its barely better than what I paid $25 in a third world country. I think the last sentence tells you all you need to know . I even changed rooms bc it was so gross and the "new room" was barely better. Still SHOCKINGLY DIRTY and run down and broken .

Yelp
Spackennahboom! My wife & I went for 3 days. She had a work meeting with her company. We came to NYC while it rained kinda hard; the place is an old hotel, but very warm & cozy. It does have a great staff that keep it very sanitary & clean. Every person in the staff is very helpful & always willing to help. The rooms vary from size & time line. Ours was a nice cozy queen size bed. Mattress could have been better. Retro update with bath, shower, fridge & update retro trim was nice. Lobby has a warm fireplace & elevators are minis?! They work well though. So far, so good it's been 24 hours... Basically our 3 day stay wasn't eventful bc it was raining & Mae had work 8-5 each day.

Jean F.

Yelp
Run down and empty. It used to be pretty and lively, not anymore. Maybe good for a basic stay of the price is right.

Yelp
The Royalton is a nice hotel, but lacks amenities. I'm sure the place was booming back in the day. The lobby is very dark and cozy with a large fireplace, nice little spot to just sit when you come in from the cold. The staff is very friendly. My room was clean, the beds were comfy, good pillows. The bathroom was fine but there's no counterspace for your things and the bathtub definitely needs to be redone. It's a great location, right by Bryant Park and Times Square so lots of restaurant options. No refrigerator in the room, no microwave in the room, which is unheard of in 2024. We had to go to the bodega a block down to get waters and snacks to keep in the room in a cooler. After reading the reviews, I knew their restaurant was no longer open and they didn't have snacks for purchase. The red flame diner across the street is very good for breakfast. It was a great location for us to set up for the Thanksgiving parade.

Yelp
I pitty the fool, and guess who's the fool in the case? ME!!!! I booked off a 3rd party website that said this hotel was 4 stars. It's literally a 1 star. They are so dated it's pathetic! Old, ran down, & dusty looking. They're in need of major renovations. This place looks like a hotel that was nice in the 80s/90s Era, and it's definitely no longer. They don't have any amenities in this place. No restaurants or bars or small kiosks. The 2 stars are for the courteous workers, and they didn't have roaches or rats, thankfully. But this place is trash, honestly. I wouldn't stay here again. We paid $1000 for 3 nights, and the motel 6, I'm sure, would've been newer. The owners should be embarrassed to own this place. Like all the money they're making is sad it looks old

George C.

Yelp
It was disappointing. I made reservation by mistake thinking I was at the other Royalton. The Lobby was a ghost town as the bar and lounge are permanently closed. The very small Eleveators were shaky. TV had only really basic channels. The Tile floors were chipped. The room had a disinfectant smell upon entering. The Rug had seen better days. No soap dish (think about that).....BUT The Woman at front desk on ck in was a pro. The bell men were fantastic. They actually took us one by one to a cab accross the street in pouring rain when we were checking out. Really above and beyond. Place is Clean and really quiet considering the location. Just be aware.......Most reviews are very old.
google avatar

Sam K.

Yelp
Really dingy, holes in floor and run down. Rooms were spacious, but felt pretty outdated.

Yelp
Like an aging supermodel, the Royalton hotel used to cut quite a figure in the go-go '80s but is now just a gravity ravaged vestige of her former glory beating back the cobwebs. On any given day (back in the day) you could find the bulimic stilettos of the Condé Nast fashion army staring at their romaine and A-List luminaries like Bob Dylan mumbling through his lunch. Now, it's a shell. No restaurant, bar or any extracurriculars to take your mind off your tiny, dated room. The old girl is still there mingling with the far too late to the party guests but she is now well past her sell-by date. Paging Dr. Botox. Two charitable stars for this fading dowager bride.

Yelp
This place was a strange, strange experience. +++++++++++++++++++++++ F R O N T D E S K +++++++++++++++++++++++ The dudes at the front desk were generally not nice or super busy. They would take calls while serving you or interrupt what you say. 1-2 of the staffers are okay, but it was also incredibly hard to hear them through the glass and they sat very far away and spoke really softly. I do appreciate that they checked our vax status before giving us gym access. +++++++++++++++++++++++ R O O M +++++++++++++++++++++++ // Bedroom There is a bed with two circular recessed shelves that have the remote and the phone, but can't fit very much else. Maybe just your classes. Next to the bed there is a side table, but also this WEIRD WEIRD PROTRUSION from the wall that actually looked dangerous. It had long pointy metal wires sticking out of it. But really, STRANGE. There was an oddly placed desk in the middle of the room that kind of blocked one of the closets. There was nowhere else to put it. TV is on the side and can be angled but still doesn't fully angle to either the bed or the couch so you still have to sit awkwardly... There was a sofa at the end of the room. It was okay. Just another place to sit. It was sandwiched by two closets. One with drawers and one with hangers and the ironing board. There needs to be hooks because there's not enough space/hangers to put both big coats and blazers and jackets. There were no cups or ice bucket. Nothing! Nothing to even put my toothbrush in. The room smelled like smoke...bleh // Bathroom This is very narrow. There's one side with the sink and the other side is like a vanity with a metal stool. Its pretty tight. BATHTUB IS NICE! It's HUGE! It is a big perfectly circular tub, it can fit two people. But the bath tiles are a terrible dull green color and gives the water a weird color because of the reflection. +++++++++++++++++++++++ A M E N I T I E S +++++++++++++++++++++++ // Lobby The lobby area is really nice with comfortable couches and beautiful fire places. It looked like a cool place to sit and chill because the rooms were so uncomfortable. // Elevators Elevators are tight and tiny and the doors are narrow but there are 3! I don't think all of the elevators are Ada accessible. // Gym Gym is nice! It has two pelotons, some treadmills, free weights. It is open 24/7 with a water fountain! You need to show proof of vaccination before you can access the gym! It is small, but I appreciate having a peloton just downstairs. +++++++++++++++++++++++ A M B I A N C E +++++++++++++++++++++++ THIS HOTEL FEELS LIKE A SUBMARINE IN A BAD WAY! Like a claustrophobic way. Narrow hallways painted gray with weird little circular accents that look like bolts and screws. +++++++++++++++++++++++ O V E R A L L +++++++++++++++++++++++ We only came here because it was for work and this was the main hotel everyone was staying at. There are wonderful hotels nearby. Not coming here again.

Ariana W.

Yelp
It was simply outdated. They don't have any amenities for the price we spent. The elevators were broken, tiny & scary. The hallways to the rooms gave submarine & half the basic necessities were not in the room we had to ask for them.

Yelp
I stayed here for a staycation Labor Day Weekend. I checked in at about 11am and even though it was well before the standard check in time of 3pm, they had a room available and let me check in early which was amazing! This hotel is conveniently located in midtown, close to Grand Central, Times Square, and lots of subways. The lobby of the hotel is gorgeous and feels very ornate and fancy. They have automated double doors as well which adds to the convenience when entering and exiting the lobby. I had a room with a queen bed. The room was clean and a decent size, given that all NYC hotel rooms are generally small. The room also had a good sized couch. The bathroom had two large mirrors and lots of free toiletries. The highlight of the room was the giant round tub with disco ball-style glittery tile. Great for a nice, long soak! I ordered takeout and forgot utensils and cups and they were able to quickly supply everything I needed at the front desk. The front desk and concierge staff were also extremely welcoming and attentive. An interesting note about this hotel is the hallways are narrow and the elevators are tiny. But this was a great stay!

Yelp
I stayed here for my bday weekend and wanted space and convenience. Let me tell you this establishment did not disappoint from start to finish. Also you should know that you have a beautiful gem representing your brand with the receptionist Janay welcoming your guest. She was amazing we came to the royalton because the previous nights accommodations weren't exactly what we were expecting so finding this hotel was definitely luck and it was the best kind. Janay made us feel welcomed and valued our entire stay and she helped us navigate our time in the city with a smile on her face.. BRAVO ROYALTON hold on to her tight. Thank you again to the entire hotel team. Will stay here anytime I visit the city!

Yelp
This hotel is a shell of its former self. There is no longer a bar nor a restaurant. The elevator is barely functioning. There's no valet nor parking on-site (even though both are advertised online when booking). On top of it lacking these amenities, they still have the AUDACITY to charge a resort fee. Comical. Before arriving, I had TERRIBLE service from the front desk staff. Because of that interaction ALONE I wouldn't stay here again. For the price, you could stay somewhere MUCH nicer (Mondrian, Staypineapple, etc). The only saving grace, and the reason I gave two stars instead of one, is the balcony in my room. It was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. I didn't utilize housekeeping, so I can't comment on that. The room was neat when I arrived, though I don't know that I would call it clean. The sheets were dingy and smelled like dust. They use vinegar in their cleaning products, so the whole bathroom smelled like vinegar. The bathroom features are nice. The design and decor (especially both shower heads) are unique. Probably the best thing about this room = the shower. The proximity to everything is a perk. Very close to lots of landmarks. In short, this hotel was crème de la crème about 30 years ago. However, now: it's barely functioning. I wouldn't be surprised if it closed in the next few years, or got bought out. Especially considering the piss poor service. ***The doorman was the nicest. Very attractive also... Overall: 1.5/5 - Would not recommend and would not stay again.

Yelp
Wish I'd read these reviews before booking my stay! Talk about faded glory. Deserted lobby Closed bar/restaurant Rickety elevators Dead silent on my floor (good in a way but also disconcerting) No coffeemaker in room or drinking glasses (huh???) Staff was friendly and helpful, but the desk clerks are tucked back into these nooks and it felt very bureaucratic, like you were visiting a bank teller The location is great, and my room was clean.

Yelp
WOW! fabulous hotel. the ROYALTON is exquisite. Lobby is something to see. Check-in was not warm nor professionally greetable. :( Rooms are 007 James Bond style. Fantastic tub. Well sized tub. Room sized is spacious - nothing like a Holiday Inn nor a Hampton hotel room. Much more room. A very comfortable stay. Staff can be a bit discriminator. Racism should not be an issue here - but it is. If you are not WHITE then the staff, at times, may get to you when they feel like it. They might be slow to address your issues. They talk to you differently than others. They look at you differently than others with that hawking look being anti-warm. The staff NEEDS to be retrained on hospitality, professionalism, being cordial and to be aware that racism in the work place is a FEDERAL VIOLATION.

Yelp
No bar No restaurant Fridge didn't work No coffee in my room No drinking water glasses Hotel VERY RUN DOWN and depressing from my last visit in 2019 Very disappointing!! Super expensive at $500/night!!! Only thing to recommend this place is its perfect location in mid-town within walking distance of most of the theaters Staff all nice and mostly helpful

Yelp
This lovely, slightly hidden gem is an absolute treasure! This was my first time staying here and I will definitely be staying there again. The staff were very helpful & friendly. From my check-in to my check-out and in-between, the staff were wonderful! The hotel's style is 1930's/1940's glamour and I was all in for that! Located between Times Square & Grand Central Terminal, it was the perfect location for everywhere I went via the subway (New York Botanical Gardens, Broadway shows, Lower East Side, Financial District). Due to Covid-aftermath, the bar wasn't open, but that's not a problem when you're in New York. The room was comfortable and roomy enough for this solo traveler. I chose a room with a bathtub and that was glorious! I need that bathtub in my home! I didn't get to check out their gym, but next time, I will. The Royalton was fantastic!

Yelp
This place could be amazing....location is great. The hotel itself was apparently sold during covid to a company that has zero interest in it. Dank, dark, dated. Where there once was two thriving bars and a restaurant, now is a ghost town. Completely shut down. Poor people working here seem depressed and miserable. We asked about restaurant and bars and the guy at desk blamed the new owners. Our room is depressing as hell and ran us $1k a night. I would leave in a heartbeat but it's holiday season and everything is sold out. No coffee, no water, no doorman, No bell staff. It's so sad. Clearly new corporate owners have no concern. I can't wait to check out. I heard two people already at desk demanding refunds. What a dump

Be aware that as a 'cost savings' this hotel only offers six TV stations. No news, no sports, no nothing. They don't mention that on their website...

Yelp
This was unfortunately not a great stay. I stayed at this hotel this weekend for one night. My friend and I booked the hotel at a rate of 316 for the night. Upon checkin a few things occurred: 1) the entrance is blocked by two men having a discussion, in street clothes it seemed like we were in the wrong location turns out it is the hotel and the one man says this is the hotel just come in and then eventually offers to help our bags but that part was just awkward because no signage and the employees were not clearly identified. Also there was no ramp so for someone who has physical disabilities like myself this was not accommodating 2) at checkin the person at the desk tells us the rate we booked online was a government rate, however after explaining this several times that we had no idea it was a government rate, we just booked the room at the rate displayed online, they insisted on charging us the higher rate which was over 550 for the night. This to me is not fair considering the way the rate is advertised online 3) the lobby: the middle of the afternoon we arrived at 3 pm and nothing was open, the bar had no one attending to it it was completely empty also at night absolutely nothing happening... on a Friday night?! 4) the room: the room was spacious and the bathroom was decent...I will give it that but there was hair on the door knob globs of yellow hair... there were barely enough plugs for us to plug in our phones to charge and utilize the heating pad that I needed. The bed sunk in the middle horribly and for someone who suffers from spine issues this was not ok. I did not sleep. No water or coffee machines in the room. Again if we had paid a cheaper price I would accept this as "you get what you pay for" this is completely unacceptable in my opinion. We could have stayed at a much nicer, more conveniently located hotel for the same (higher price) and gotten much more.

Yelp
Bindin is a great representation of how high the standards are here. We are so happy with Bindin!

Yelp
This is the strangest, outrageously overpriced hotel I have ever visited. The STAFF, however, is extremely courteous and helpful, within their very limited means. As you walk in, you ae warned: the entire first floor is out of use - the seats, bar, tables are all entirely void of anything, leather couches falling apart. The bedroom has no coffee maker, no kettle, empty mini fridge (out of order anyway...) no glasses, no cups, nothing. What a disaster, for $500 including "facilities fee?" a night. This would have jumped to $600 for a Saturday night, but I just could not stay one more night. Such a shame, because it must have been a lovely hotel but it is really embarrassing. I was told that the Royalton on Park AVenue has "everything", the rooftop, room service, etc. Why not rehab this well-located hotel (if you need to be midtown) - I was able to obtain a kettle and buy some instant coffee from Whole Foods around the corner. The TV only has 4 channels (you need to connect your own device for more.) Unbelievable.

Yelp
If you are looking a hotel near Times Square, this is a pretty classy spot for a fairly affordable price. When I walked in, I was blown away by the wooden decor and pod like seating areas where catching up with friends while enjoying a couple cocktails type of place. Check-in was quick and easy, and my room was even ready by 11am. The elevators are tiny, 2 ppl and luggage is all that fits, but no biggie. The king room was very spacious! It has a nice coach/seating area to relax on. The way it was decorated reminded me of being in a boat. For those that need a make-up room, these rooms had mirrors on 3 sides. Getting ready and doing my hair was so easy since I could see the back of my head (love the simple things). The bed was a nice mixture of soft/firm. Huge TV has and adjustable mount. A huge closet. But no iron could be found. The bathroom def needs some upgrades. Noise from the outside is also loud, especially for us because we had a room next to the elevator. Overall, loved staying here. Centrally located, and easy to get to various MTA lines within a 10-15 minute walk. For the price and the vibe, it checks the boxes

Yelp
Pros: The staff is nice and very, very accommodating. Bathroom is clean and modern but small. Cons: I felt like I walked into the Twilight Zone. The other reviews are dead on. Desolate, dusty, cranky elevator to the top. Weird, dated room layout. Modern shower but no shelves hardly to put your stuff down. TV is to the side and pillows in back so can't watch TV unless you move from the back pillows at an angle. Odd, Odd, Odd is the best to describe this place. And not a 4-star hotel by any stretch of the imagination.

Yelp
Promoted as a four star hotel, this is far from it. Don't forget the big resort fee they bury in fine print. Find another.

Yelp
I wish I could give 0 starts to this hotel. I booked to come in and see a client but came down with Covid and couldn't travel. Because I got sick after the 48 hour cancellation time frame they wouldn't budge on the cancellation fee. I was charged over $300.00. I encourage anyone looking at this hotel to go elsewhere. This was a terrible experience and the manager there wouldn't even budge on this.

Yelp
Little late to the party posting this review but for me - to come in to the city for drinks done right - this is where it's at. Bring your credit card, Benjamin's and be sure you have friends with a wad of cash too. Not cheap, not a bargain by any means but for the perfect pre-dinner cocktail- get in here. Dropped $375+ on a bar bill for a few rounds for 9 of us. Worth every penny.

Yelp
My bf and I booked our stay at The Royalton through Hotwire. It was quite affordable for the location. The lobby was dark and intimate, I loved the details in the decor. They also have a connecting restaurant/bar which was lovely. -Location: Right next to Bryant Park and is close to a few metro stations down the block. Times Square is also a couple blocks away. -Our Room: 1 queen bed facing the street. It was much more spacious than I expected considering we were only a couple blocks from Times Square. Our bed was so comfortable, we never wanted to get up in the morning. I also loved the standing shower and the waterfall shower head. There's no fan in the bathroom but they did provide matches and a candle. The toiletries were actually pretty nice too. I appreciated all the little details in our room/bathroom. -Service: From the moment we checked in and out, and everything in between, the customer service was great. The cleaning staff was always greeting us in the mornings. Overall, I was impressed with The Royalton. My bf and I enjoyed our stay here and we'd definitely recommend it.

Yelp
Avoid like toxic water!!! I live in NY, and for years recommended this hotel to clients from out of town and enjoyed its bars for after work drinks. Recently recommended to a friend, and couldn't believe how a true 4-star hotel can turn into a smelly, unlivable and unsanitary place to stay. The bars are no longer open, there's a single employee at the lobby, the rooms are smelly and unclean. I don't understand why this place is still listed as 4-star in all travel sites. There's a number of recent reviews describing the same kind of decadence. You should believe them all and avoid this place at any cost!!!

Yelp
This is our favorite hotel in NYC and it pains me To give a 3 star rating....but it has been ruined with the installation of what looks like high security lighting?!? Did something happen? Was there a crime? This hotel is always clean, well kept...staffed with great people and more importantly has such a sultry, romantic and sleek persona. Not sure who made the call to light it up like a soccer field, but it will chase long term/frequent quests like us away....we have stayed 14 times in the last year. Who wants to have date nite at a bar with epic drinks and be blasted by light? I love the room lights are all on dimmers, so if people say its dark they can brighten up their own space. Management, please at least dim down the lobby and bar....you have literally killed the mood!!!

Yelp
Location location location! Lovely and accommodating staff. Reading previous reviews, I'm shocked at all the Karen's complaining about not having a coffee pot. The rate is reflective that the rooms lack some amenities but there are at least 3 coffee shops and restaurants within stone's throw. . Comfy beds, dark, quiet, HUGE room, giant bathroom and easy walk to everything. We loved it!

Yelp
I have supported The Royalton through the years for 20 years. It's a nice location, but severely needs a renovation, its and restaurant is closed but the room rates are high. I was charged $640 for a Thursday night--just for a basic room--and sadly, other than the location, you'd be better off in a Holiday Inn Express for under $150. The two stars are the average of a zero for the accommodations and 5 star for the staff who are friendly and doing the best they can with what's left and that says something. If you go here, use some app where you can get this hotel for dirt cheap or go to one of the others across the street--the Sofitel or maybe Algonquin--but not here. You'd only be paying for a memory or for what's possible not what is.

Yelp
We have stayed in this hotel once before and liked it so we decided to give it another try. Big mistake. We got to our room and it was freezing, so we turned on the heat and cold air blew out so when we went to dinner we asked the front desk to have a look at it; we returned to find a space heater plugged into the wall. The bathroom is a JOKE...there is such little counter space that you have to juggle around your toiletries just to get ready. There is one very small shelf in the shower to put soap, shampoo bottles, face wash, etc., so something has to go on the floor, which is just gross. The lighting is bizarre...there isn't even a pen and paper in the room. And there is NO COFFEE in the room; even the Best Western has coffee!!! A French Press coffee in the lobby is $8 and although they do offer lattes and cappuccinos, their machine was broken. Then there's the lobby, which also has not seen an upgrade since the 80s. It's loud, dark and obnoxious. The only thing that is somewhat nice is the women's bathroom off the lobby... Basically the hotel is old, dated, and in need of a really huge makeover.

Yelp
This hotel felt deserted. The bar was not open at all and I didn't even consider room service given the old smell all around the place. The decor feels like it's suck in there 80s. The only thing it has going for it is the great location. I was more disappointed in this hotel because I booked it incorrectly. Beware! thought I had booked the Royalton in the Park Ave location, which has the pool/rooftop bar instead I incorrectly booked this place.

Yelp
This is the first negative review I have ever given I would have appreciated it if the Royalton Hotel would have advised guests that there were no good restaurants or bars Paying $800.00 for two nights was inferior to Motel 6 There were no cups in the bathroom and understanding Covid a couple of cups in plastic would have prevented us in buying same On most occasions entering the hotel there was no security or front desk personnel What was most unpleasant were guests bringing in food in plastic bags and eating in the lobby. We asked for fresh towels but the wet ones were not taken away and no turn down service The hotel asked for our response and after we did it have not received any information I respectfully recommend no one to stay at this hotel

Ed N.

Yelp
This hotel was nice many years ago but now it is run down. No doorman, no food or bar service, the carpets are stained and threadbare and rooms are in desperate need of renovation. Too many hotels are claiming to be 4-5 star hotels and blaming Covid (still) for now looking like 2-3 star hotels and this is a prime example. :(

Yelp
The Royalton hotel is located is the perfect location! It is a block away from the bus stop, train station, many cafes/restaurants, and many New York destinations such as Time Square, Chrysler building, Empire State Building, etc. The hotel itself is sparkling clean (which is a top priority of mine when it comes to hotels). My favorite part of the room would be the disco tub. You can adjust the bathroom lights and take a nice bath in the bathtub after a long day exploring the city. Siobhan and the Royalton staff is we're friendly, professional and accommodating and made sure I was enjoying my stay. I am looking forward to staying at this hotel again during my next trip to New York. The Hotel is located walking distance to everything such as the train station, bus stop, and places to eat or drink. If you have the chance, try to get a room with the disco tub which is really cool and relaxing with the light that you could adjust to make it dim or light a candle. I'm a clean freak but every time I came back to my hotel room it was sparkling clean. Siobhan and the Royalton staff are friendly, professional, and accommodating.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I drafted this review in July 2018 but had neglected to post it until now. Booked the Royalton for a short work trip - grateful I only had to stay one night. The room looked much brighter and more beautiful/welcoming in pictures on the Royalton website than it actually is. Their website details the room as having an "exquisitely pleasing palette," but the aesthetic (light gray walls, gray tile, gray/teal carpet) really just makes the room feel very dark and gloomy. My room was lacking natural light because of the surrounding buildings, but even natural light wouldn't make this place feel better. There was something that resembled a small bloodstain on my carpet and one of the buttons on the tufted couch was loose - not a big deal, but just makes the place look poorly taken care. Overall, being in the room was just so depressing and I left immediately after unpacking just a few of my things. The bathroom, described as "a sparkling and invigorating space that refreshes and restores," gave me low-key prison vibes. The tiles (same tiles on the wall and floor) are dark, old, and dirty-looking. The pipes on the toilet are rusty. The sink is stainless steel, as are the vanity stool and a small cup next to the sink. It seems like there was an attempt to go for a sleek, modern look with the stainless but it honestly just looks like what you'd see in a prison cell. Even with the disco tub (which was the only great thing about the bathroom/room), I wanted to spend as little time in the bathroom as possible. While the lobby of the hotel looks lovely (albeit very dark) perhaps this hotel would greatly benefit from investing a bit more in updating the rooms themselves. Given the countless number of options for hotels in NYC, I know I can find something better for the price and will not be staying at the Royalton again.

Yelp
Worst hotel I've ever stayed in in NY. No coffee in room or lobby. Nothing in lobby. No water glasses, trash can liners, burnt out bulb in articulating mirror in bathroom, ONE roll of toilet paper, 1 small bar of soap (even after our first night), no leak guard trim on walk-in shower, . no Ipod dock, radio etc., no ID for tv stations (weird). No mini bar, no ice bucket, no blanket in closet. I didn't check for ice on our floor or room service. 3 of the smallest (4 close friends, small) elevators for the entire hotel (one broken our entire 4 day stay. Listed as one of the most romantic hotels in NYC, maybe for a quickie with a hooker. Old and run down hotel in serious need.

Yelp
I love this hotel it's clean, modern and very close to tile square! The elevators do bother me a bit though. They can be bumpy and also move around a lot but over all great hotel

Yelp
The Royalton Hotel has the bones to be a really nice hotel but it sorely needs an overhaul top to bottom. Every space is dated and worn and sadly, the lack of guests due to Covid make it feel even more dreary. Our room had a fridge that didn't work, a full size bed, not a queen, no clocks, very loud A/C, crazy lamps, a bathroom mirror right out of a circus fun house and an even crazier bed post. The elevators are tiny and the lighting is poor throughout. We also had a female staff worker on our floor who entered our room when we were in it and once when we were returning claiming she was "looking for a bag" both times. Other than that, the staff was very nice and the location is great for anything in the mid-town area. We hope that ownership will find a way to renovate this hotel.

Yelp
The Royalton Hotel is a special treat for locals needing a getaway or for those visiting the city. I do not think I will stay anywhere else other than here. The location could not be more perfect. A short walking distance from Times Square but far enough away from the crowds and busy nights. Across the street is DB Bistro Moderne, an absolute must for dinner. You can walk to any of the theatres nearby for a show. The entire hotel charms you from the moment you walk in. The bar is fantastic- bartender had some crazy skills to show! The entire staff was friendly, welcoming, funny, and helpful. Concierge had a genuine interest in talking to us and asking about our plans. The room was something else. Bed was the comfiest hotel bed I've slept in NYC. The bathtub. My. God. The bathtub. It was the sole reason I chose this hotel and it did not disappoint! Described by the concierge as a 'disco tub', it easily fits two people, water temp. and flow were great, and the 'disco' feel of the tiles made for an awesome bath.
