Nashville’s 15 Most Underrated Restaurants | Eater Nashville

"A visit to the charmingly rustic Roy’s Meat Service means procuring fresh, local meats for many Nashvillians — they’ve been one of the city’s finest butcher since 2008. But you can make your food shopping extra productive by stopping at Roy’s during lunchtime. They serve plates of wings, burgers, and barbecue sandwiches Tuesday through Saturday." - Kellie Walton

Very limited selection of fresh cut Meats. And getting service here is seemingly impossible. Came in to get a couple of fillets, which they did not have any pre-cut fillets in their coolers. So I asked about them, but could not get a response or an acknowledgment from the staff. Keep in mind there were only two other customers in the building besides myself. Since I couldn't get acknowledged, obviously I didn't buy anything, and see no point going back.

When you go in the front door you realize this is not a cookie cutter chain store but a one of a kind locally owned business. I enjoy the friendliness and service that is hard to find these days. Had their famous smoked brisket yesterday and it was as awesome as always.

Roy’s is a Nashville institution. It’s hard to review overall as they provide so many services. There’s the BBQ which is more old school BBQ stand style and not the expensive, competition style BBQ common these days. Then there’s the meat and 3 style plate lunches which doesn’t have the variety of mains like the traditional Nashville places. Then there’s the meat service itself which offers custom cuts and high quality meats not found in common grocery stores. But it’s also a small grocery shop which provides vegetables and goods for the local community. And a beer store with a wide variety. Most important of all there’s the family and friends attitude that goes on there. Packs of kids coming in to get drinks after practice. Old friends who stop off to get milk, a tomato, some chops and check on other friends and pass family news. Dad’s coming in to get that custom cut for their “famous grilled ____” and a six pack for the weekend cookout. Tennis couples grabbing wine coolers. Local workers getting a quick plate lunch and eating at the tables in back or outside. All are welcome and treated like family. It’s a vibe not seen much anymore, unfortunately.

Came 15 minutes before closing and doors were locked today (6/15). If you want to close at 530 or 545, that's fine, but make it your hours. And if there's some sort of special situation or emergency, that's also fine! But post a note so customers don't think they wasted a trip just so staff could knock off early.

On this day in 2022, the wife and I went to Roy Meat Service for the first time. Had BBQ sandwiches. She commented that it was the best BBQ in town. Fast forward to current. We eat at RMS 3-4 times a month. Brisket, meat loaf, chicken with dressing, fried pork chops and more. This is our go to for steaks, bacon, pimento cheese and more. The steaks are so good, we take RMS steaks to the Masters for our customers. Go once for lunch and you will go back. It is great to walk in the door where everyone knows your name.

Google
I stopped by Roy’s for lunch today and was highly impressed. I had the meatloaf plate w/ greens and potatoes. They are one of the best meat and threes around, hands down. My wife always gets the beef quesadillas since they remind her of the ones from Es Fernando’s back in the day. If you’re in the neighborhood give them a try!

Beth Stoy

Google
This is my favorite BBQ spot. Everything I’ve had here has been amazing, their ribs fall off the bone. I also had Korean Dumplings and the Spicy Green Pork Quesadilla. Both delicious, the sauce with the Korean dumplings was especially good. They have a good and unique selection of drinks and usually have some farm fresh items for sale (cheese, milk, I’ve gotten farm eggs from here in the past). Also got yellow cake with chocolate frosting that blew my mind! It was the perfect texture and the frosting was the perfect level of sweetness.

Christina Taylor

Google
Roy’s is hands down the spot you need to go! From farm fresh eggs, produce, milk, to any of the cuts of meat you need! Just holler and they will get you taken care of! The meat and 3 is always a hit, never misses. And can’t beat the quesadillas, the recipe came from the old Es Fernando’s! Truly a little piece of heaven on earth here in east nashville. We love RMS!

Yelp
Roys is located a little off the beaten path in East Nashville and unless someone has told you about it or you live near there you probably wouldn't know it was there. Whether you are looking for a reasonably priced plate lunch or want to take something home, Roys has pretty much what you need for a successful bbq at the house including a decent selection of craft beer. The meat is priced competitively with Publix or Kroger but looked to be better quality. in addition, they also carry high quality wagyu if you are making a special meal. Sandwiches are prices around $6 each and a meat and with 2 sides is less than $10. I ordered the 4 bone ribs ($8.50 a la carte) and turnip greens and enjoyed it on the patio outside. The ribs were very well done but the sauce was really one of the better sauces in recent memory. If you haven't, check them out. Places like Roy's are what gives Nashville a unique, friendly, neighborhood feel in comparison to other concrete jungle cities.

Yelp
I love that Roys is still around, I remember walking over as a kid to get an ice cream or soda during the summer. He is the neighbor butcher, and one of the nicest guys in town. How many places now a days remember you from when you were a kid. Staff is friendly and if you are an OG East sider you'll have a great time catching up with the other folks who are still around here. He's added a gravel parking lot and the street has some as well. The food is always incredible, this man knows his meats! For two trays and a pulled pork sandwich (a must have) it was 30 bucks glad to see his prices haven't changed much either. Never changing though is the banana pudding, still one of the best In the city. I should have gotten two since the first one didn't even make it out of the parking lot. Overall I'd say if you haven't been here already come check it out and if you have, remember to get that banana pudding you'll regret it later.

Yelp
Nobody can shut Roy down if somebody shuts Roy down by following lawsuit I will guarantee you the whole community of the Nashville will not put up with that because boys will support his family and all the staff

Colin O.

Yelp
Best butcher, best customer service, fresh food, great environment, east Nashville treasure.

Yelp
Great butcher option for Lamb, Goat, and chicken options. (No ground beef or steaks.) They we're open on Sunday; which, was perfect as few butchers are. Great customer service and appreciated the butcher cutting up pieces for size. We have a Great Pyrenees dog and just decided to switch to raw food. Lots of great options of liver, ribs, etc. We will be back to get some things for ourself as well.

Yelp
Bought 20lbs of ground chicken a few weeks ago. I emailed with someone, they claimed it was organic. I thought the price was great so I placed the order. When I picked up, the service was good, a young man carried it to my car. When I got home and looked at the poultry I thought it looked fatty, but decided to cook it anyway ( I cook for my dogs). I have a couple of instapots, so I used them for cooking.. the smell was super off and rancid. I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt so I cooked it in the oven to see if it was maybe my instapot wasn't heating correctly... still smelled like rotten milk, then I cooked the rest in the air fryer and the smell and look was still the same. I wanted to really like their service and meat... I reached out via email to see about a refund even though I was not expecting one, but in hopes that someone would acknowledge my comment. No reply. I've never had chicken smell that gross in my life, Ive had three friends tell me that my house smelled rancid and awful. I wasted about $120 and more including other veggies I put in with the chicken. I will never be returning to this place. I was trying not to be judge mental with the looks of the interior and their rotting vegetables and expired candies I saw while there waiting for my order.. they have good reviews... I wanted to be supportive of a local shop. I should have left when I was standing in line and the whole store/ market felt off.. PLEASE BE AWARE, they may be feeding you bad and contaminated meat and dousing it in sauce. It would be nice for someone to reply to email but seems like they don't value their customers. Because of how awful the meat is I think I should report this to the health department to investigate. It's not ethical and right to sell bad meat.
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
What an awesome establishment. It's one of the few places we've found that sells tri-tip, so we jumped at the opportunity. It's been so long since we've had it and it didn't disappoint. Great quality meat and they even picked one out of the back for me. Great staff and excellent service. We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Amazing spot. I wish I had a place like this in my neighborhood. Truly a hidden gem. I was lucky enough to be disc golfing nearby got two of my favorite drivers there. (Calling them the meat shop discs) And loved the pulled pork sandwhiches. Really good food absolutely Delicious.
google avatar

Robert V.

Yelp
RMS is now one of our go-to's for great meat and local dairy (eggs). Nothing beats a neighborhood butcher.

Andrew H.

Yelp
Spots like this are so important to a community maintaining its character. So much of east is gettin paved over for big million dollar tall n skinnies, it's beautiful to me I can still go down to RMS and get a killer pulled pork sandwich and some collar greens for like 12 bucks. Good down to earth Nashville folks in there working hard and keeping it real. When I go in there and get a few groceries I need and avoid Kroger it makes my day. Keep on keepin on y'all! Ps. If you're looking for a Whole Foods to get organic chicken to cook for your designer dog then this is probably not gonna be what you're looking for. It's something you might just not understand.

Mike K.

Yelp
I'll keep this short and sweet. Roy's is the best most authentic last standing barbecue joint in East Nashville. You must try this place. The hospitality is next level. There is no comparison! I hope this place stays forever.
google avatar

Jane S.

Yelp
Roy's is what it's all about! Friendly neighborhood butcher with amazing cuts of meat, amazing hot food and amazing people. I highly recommend the quesadillas they use smoked meat...words don't do it justice. Every neighborhood needs a Roys.

Katherine O.

Yelp
This is the best place in East Nashville! A true mom and pop establishment with amazing food. Everyone who works there is so nice and helpful.
google avatar

Dorene Z.

Yelp
Stopped in on Saturday because I had heard of quesadillas just like Es Fernando. Ordered the green chili...one to eat there, one to take home. They were AMAZING!! Exactly the same taste! I was so happy!Customer service was beyond friendly! I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Vlad G.

Yelp
Great environment & food! Staff is friendly and a store from the past. Quite charming!
google avatar

Kristy T.

Yelp
Don't like how they make the food. I had the roast beef with mashed potatoes and beans. Literally nothing was good. I've never seen or tasted potatoes and beans like that and the roast beef wasn't even good. I didn't finish one thing on my place. I had a couple bites of everything and threw the rest away.

David B.

Yelp
Rad spot, friendly staff, epic meat! Everything that a local butcher shop that's an important part of the neighborhood should be and more.

Jaclyn K.

Yelp
Dang. The flavor on the bbq chicken is 10/10. You can tell this is a darn good food entrepreneur who is serving the neighborhood in style. Will recommend to anyone visiting. Nice people, amazing food, and local groceries as needed!
google avatar

Brittany F.

Yelp
We were passing through Nashville and wanted to get some steaks. Roy's had a great selection and good prices! There was cold beer and other produce as well. There were locals outside the shop that were super friendly and welcoming!
google avatar

Jan J.

Yelp
went in to purchase some steak, i was blown away by not only the quality but the hospitality. I felt SO at home and welcomed. Thank you! Will continue to come back.

Jonathan J.

Yelp
Great example of don't judge a book by its cover. Doesn't look like much on outside, but everything was great green beans great baked beans. They even cut filets for us and threw in a small one for free. Highly recommended!!!
google avatar

Lorrie M.

Yelp
Best Green chili quesadillas!!! Great meat. Family owned and great people. Go there often
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
Just found out about them and didn't hesitate to drop by! They have such a a great selection of meat and at a reasonable price! Not to mention they have a good variety of cheese, deli, vegetables, and dairy products. And my boyfriend definitely enjoyed the cold beer! In addition to their fridge items, they also have a menu of items available - not exactly sure pricing or how it works, but it all sounded delicious. The workers were very pleasant and, one could tell, cared about the patrons. I will be back!! Especially after having some of the marinated chicken with dinner tonight *drool*
google avatar

Blake R.

Yelp
Jeff Roy has kept it real for the neighborhood so many of us called home back in the day, and many still do. I guarantee you, you will leave saying that was some great food and fellowship. I have gotten to know Jeff more since I have been stopping by since I am back in the South. One thing that stands out to me (other than the great grub) about Jeff and his son's that work there - they are grateful for their loyal customers and being able to serve East Nashville! Thanks, Jeff!
google avatar

Ben C.

Yelp
These guys have really quality meats and wonderful prices. Some of the warmest and most helpful staff you'll find, it truly feels like going to a friend's house. I literally never get my meat from kroger or Publix anymore
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Just recently found this gem after 10 years in East Nashville. The meats here are fantastic, I frequent the tri tip and bacon. The hot food they have available is equally good, just tried the lemon pepper wings today and they were spot on! The no frills setup is straight forward and to the point, which I love. It's become a bit of a weekend stop for me during the summer. Excited to see what they have in stock or cooking in the back.
google avatar

Jeffrey H.

Yelp
Absolutely love picking up meats and veggies from this place. They're always willing to cut additional steaks if I need. They've got a good beer selection and it's always colder than you'd expect. Lastly, their marinated chicken is some of the best chicken I've ever had. Do yourself a favor and check it out ASAP!

Adam W.

Yelp
Popped in for dinner and everything was excellent. Great meats and sides. Service and hospitality was amazing. If it's on the menu, it's delicious.

Yelp
I just moved to East Nashville from Ohio and I can say I have found my place for meat. I walked in after reading some reviews in Yelp and was immediately greeted by someone sitting inside the door on a bench. Come to find out it was the owner. He introduced him self as Jeff, the owner and also introduced his son behind the counter (Dylan, if I'm not mistaken). He asked about what I was looking for and showed me a few of the cuts he had. He also told me if I didn't see anything I liked he would gladly cut me something. I found a couple of nice ribeyes and at a great price and he asked how I would be making them. Old cast iron pan, salt, pepper and some fresh garlic, seared on both sides and basted in butter. Is there any other way to make an amazing steak? I know there is, but this was perfect for these steaks. Jeff and his son were awesome and Jeff even thanked me from the back, by my name, as I was leaving. I will be back for all of my meat and have to say; y'all (I'm trying to learn the lingo) have a customer for as long as I'm in Nashville. Thanks again for an awesome experience and I will be back for some filets.
google avatar

Yelp
Though I have left the neighborhood, when I return to my favorite merchants, I also come here for my ribeye and bacon... If the pork shoulder or leg of lamb is on sale, I'll grab those, as well. I like the personal attention, and the fact that they like their jobs, which provides a pleasant experience. THiS is a welcome experience, to discuss the meat, suggestions, special cuts, variety.. Let's not forget Packers Briskets! Don't forget price. Excellent, fair prices on their products. Go grab a pound of bacon, a ripe tomato, from their garden, maybe a head of lettuce.. And go home and build a BLT with fresh ingredients. Call a friend to share lunch with. Grab a green tomato and some mozzarella.. sauté up sliced green tomato in bacon fat and garlic.. add a slice of mozzarella, seasonings and eat! Simple summer fare and they grow the tomatoes right there, in their garden. And say hi and introduce yourself. They are neat people and this is a great way to shop. Kind of like if you were in Aspen at the local butcher shop... Friendly people. Excellent bacon. ::heart::

Yelp
A community institution! I love this place, everything they have to go is soooo delicious and their meat is so fresh. Just tell them what you need and they will make it happen. Super friendly and I love supporting local.

Zac C.

Yelp
Best kept secret in Nashville , get quality cuts of meat or fresh local vegetables to take home OR hang out and grab some deliciously prepared ready to eat food and fairly priced beverages !!! Family owned and operated by great people . I love RMS

Shannon C.

Yelp
I just learned that Roy's sells the red chili & green chili quesadillas from Es Fernandos. I've missed the red chili quesadillas so much since Es Fernandos closed down. I haven't tried the meat +3 offerings or butcher shop meats, but I've heard good things about both. The staff is very friendly & I'll be back.
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
This place is so great. Wonderful owners and folks that work there. So glad they are in the neighborhood

Tim S.

Yelp
This off the beaten path corner store, meat market and kitchen is worth going to. They have a nice assortment of meat, miscellaneous corner store items, and a short order kitchen. We had lunch and all of the things we had were good. Friendly and professional staff, and quick turnaround time on our order. Very limited seating so plan accordingly.
google avatar

Leila L.

Yelp
Wow! We've lived in Nashville for two years and found this place today. Tucked into Shelby bottoms. We purchased two prime steaks for din din. One of the best cuts I've ever had. We will be coming back ASAP.

Rachel M.

Yelp
The friendliest staff, super delicious ribs, all around great place. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Francois J.

Yelp
We were scrambling for a specific turkey a couple of days before Thanksgiving that could be spatchcocked and Roy's exceeded all expectations. We had the best Thanksgiving turkey...ever! We're going to go back for all our meat needs!
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
My neighborhood go to for everything - beer, cigs, meat, produce, made to order burgers, disc golf frisbees, batteries - it's a true gem of a place, fun and full of nice people.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Don't see myself going anywhere else, great selection and made to order cuts of prime beef, I bought 7 aged prime beef sirloin stakes from him that when cooked you could cut with a fork, perfect marbling perfect taste, thanks Jeff you are the man

Shanna C.

Yelp
I visited RMS for the first time yesterday to buy steaks for 10 people. Jeff Roy helped me choose the best ones and even mixed a rub for me to use on them. The price was great and the filets were EXCELLENT! I'll definitely be back and highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Johnny T.

Yelp
When I go to Roy's Meat Market, It Feels Like Home. The owners and the employees are always so friendly. The store has a good variety of items and a great beer selection. And they have the best fresh meat and poultry in town and the owner Jeff will take great care of you.

Nick K.

Yelp
Great selection of meats and beer. Very fair prices. Fresh (as in good ground beef made from trimmings of steak) ground beef was $2.99 a pound. Staff is friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Marissa G.

Yelp
I LOVE living up the street from Roy's. The beer section is so nice for the space, they have so many nice every day needed things (veggies, eggs, milk, juice), and the staff is always so so helpful and kind. I don't eat meat myself but I always go up there to get meat for my dog and they packaged meat brand new and individually for me to freeze. I will continue to come back again and again!

Ryan B.

Yelp
incredible. great prices, even better food. support local quality. they were out of brisket, but everything else was considerably awesome. wonderful sides and a tangy in house bbq sauce made a memorable meal.
google avatar

Benjamin S.

Yelp
I love this place! Great meats at fair prices and they cook a great lunch on the grill out front. It has the feel of an old country shop, and none of it is contrived. The folks who work here are also very nice and care about the quality of their work. Go get some bacon!
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Great meats, great price always friendly and helpful! Prepared food is good and fresh, craft beer selection is good for the size of the store. Only thing I can complain about is that it's tucked away in East, with the drive though!

Gracyn D.

Yelp
We come here all the time because we live right down the street and this family owned butcher shop is just the sweetest and the best around. Knows our name every time we come in and just has the best attitude and customer service you can find anywhere.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the best barbecue i have ever had. It is crazy to me that there isn't a line out the door at this place. I see these poor tourists and east Nashville transplants spend insane amounts of money at places like Edley's, Jack's, and Martin's while they could be spending half the price for a way better meal. Earlier today my friend suggested we go to Roy's for some brisket. I had been here before to get beer but had never had the food. So I wanted to try the best they had to offer so I got a half rack of ribs, and order of brisket, three sides, a drink and a pack of cigarettes... $27. I couldn't believe how little I was paying. So anyways we head home and go to town. The ribs fall off the bone, the brisket melts in your mouth, and I'm like a pig in shit. My friends were getting annoyed with how much I was talking about it. After cleaning my plate, I knew I had to try more. So I went back into Roy's and told the guys how blown away I was. I said I had to try the pulled pork. And while you're at it let me get some pulled chicken as well. Once again I had the best pulled pork and pulled chicken sandwiches in my life. Shit, I put the chicken sandwich away and ate it six hours later, and it was still the best I ever had . I used to work the pit at Archer's BBQ in Knoxville and up until now I thought me and my old boss made the best BBQ around. Roy's absolutely blows us and everybody else out of the water. We really gotta get the word out about this place. It's a crime that everybody doesn't know about it. I'll be back as much as I can. Even though it's not a restaurant, it's better than any other place around. You have to go.

Mugdha G.

Yelp
Love having this place close to home! Great for picking up freshly grilled bbq lunch, some basic produce for sandwiches/breakfast, essentials and shelf stable items, beer, and of course meat. Also, love how active they are in the community and bringing it together for tailgates and block parties!
