Roy's Pasties & Bakery

Had the traditional pastie and it was delicious. The filling had so much flavor. And the crust was flaky yet stayed together. Probably one of the best pasties I've hard. They also had a big selection of desserts. Friendly and fast service. Also a great view of the bridge if you eat outside. The pasties were very affordable.

Younger gals working - were nice, however, we were there 30 minutes just prior to closing, service could have been a touch more friendly: Food - 10⭐️🌟 of 5! Hadn’t had a pasty in a bit - found Roy’s online and brought our out of state kids for a visit and introduction to a pastime food. Top notch! Food was hot, filling, and tasted just like grandma made them. Indoor and outdoor seating was clean with a pleasant view. We’ll be back soon!

We visited Roys for breakfast pasties while on vacation and we decided to go back because it's that good. We got a breakfast party and the traditional and turkey ones to go. All three were amazing.

The food at Roy's is very good. The sandwiches are fresh, and they use their own bread. The side options are tasty, I can never decide between the pasta salad or the homemade potato chips. I also love that they have vegetarian options (salads, sandwiches, soups, and pasties). The view, whether indoors or out, is fantastic. They have plenty of outdoor seating, and you can even take your food to a table right on the canal to eat. It's also a great place to meet friends - good location and lots of parking. However, the service could be better. On a recent visit, the young girl at the counter did not greet us, she simply stood at the register and waited for us to order. She did tell us to "haveaniceday," in one bored monotone. My friend and I couldn't remember if we were supposed to wait at the counter for our food or if we were to sit down and she would bring it out to us, so we stood around the counter awkwardly. We were the only customers and the girl did not say anything to us. She walked our food out to a table and waited for us to follow her. She still did not say anything to us, just set the food down and left. A simple "have a seat and I'll bring it out when it's ready" would have been all that was needed. Anticipating customer needs and making them feel welcome are basic customer service skills. I wish I could say that this was a one off, but the counter help often seems reticent, not unfriendly, just reserved and usure of how to engage with the customers.

Right on the river. Lovely bakery choices. Some drink options. Good sized food menu. Several pasty options. Hubs got original and I got the turkey and cranberry. Pecan pie bar as well. Delish. The dining area small. You grab food and sit. The tables weren't cleaned but we made do. Great view of river.

Delish. The variety of pasties and pastries were beyond what I had expected. Super delicious. Highly recommend. Cute little environment, amazing staff. Clean and well stocked up.

A must for anyone visiting Houghton! Delicious sandwiches and artisan bread. Don’t miss the pasties. The Roy’s Pick sandwich is great, and the chicken salad is yummy and fresh with robust flavors. The sandwiches are big enough to share, but you will want to eat them yourself. The pasties are excellent. Dine in, eat on the terrace overlooking the bridge, or get it to go and take in a beautiful park.

The women working were delightful. They answered all of our questions and were helpful in making our selections. The Magic Bars are rich and delicious, the apple strudel is full of apples and the Nisu bread has a cardamom flavor.

Received the second shipment yesterday (1-16-26). Looking forward to enjoying these pasties. Never found out what UPS did with the first shipment. Thanks, Roys!

This is a cool place with really great service. So many tasty treats available it's hard to choose just one,

We always get pasties whenever we are in the U.P., and Roy's were excellent! So much so the kids begged for us to get more the next day! This pasty and bakery does counter service only. You can get ready made pasties, sandwiches, and bakery items to eat in or to go. They also have frozen pasties to take and bakery items at home. The frozen pasties are fully cooked and only need to be thawed and heated through. The inside dining space is somewhat small, but there is also lots of outside dining space as well. This was a great find and as more than the traditional pasty...my personal favorite was the chicken and broccoli.

Went here on a recommendation from a coworker. There's so many bakeries in the area that I want to try but definitely glad I came here. Really friendly staff, and just an absolutely tempting display of a bunch of unique baked goods. Everything looked delicious. Tried a handful of different things and was happy with them all. Pricing is also reasonable for what you're getting in my opinion. I'll definitely be back to try some more stuff here.

Wow. Easily the best pasty I've ever had. It was thanksgiving in a hand pie. We also grabbed some donuts and scones. Amazing. I love that they will ship frozen pasties to you so I won't have to wait til next year to eat these incredible pasties.

I ordered a carrot cake for a birthday party. It was $40 and could feed 8. The taste of the cake was good. It was moist. The cream cheese frosting was as sweet as I wanted it. Where I was disappointed was the decoration of the cake. The writing was completely off center. Part of the icing had begun to crack when I picked up the cake. You can see it at the W of farewell. I could tell that blue icing had been squished into the white at the Y in Kyle. I got a cake from a bakery because I wanted it to be decorated by a professional. I could have baked my own cake, but I paid $40 for a nice looking one. What I got is not professional looking at all. I will not be ordering birthday cakes from Roy's anymore.

I originally visited Roy's two years ago during my first trip to the Upper Peninsula. They have a more modern take on the pasty, taking the rich shortcrust dough and stuffing it with fillings such as mozzarella and pepperoni, beef and cheese, or the classic breakfast combination of sausage, eggs, potatoes, and cheese. I honestly don't particularly like the traditional pasty, so this is a nice departure for a meal on the road or while hiking. We weren't able to make it this time until near closing time and we unfortunately discovered that they only had the traditional and turkey cranberry pasties left for the day. We opted to try both of them as we hadn't gotten either during our first visit. Traditional Pasty, Large ($7.50) - This is a massive 1 pound pasty that's placed into a specially constructed dual-layer bag. Even with this bag, the amount of oil and grease soaked through both layers and then even more leaked into the paper bag that was holding everything. This pasty had a big problem from the very start - the bottom of the pasty was fused to the waxed wrapper and I could not get it loose at all. When I tried to take it out of the pouch, the pasty completely fell apart, rendering it into essentially an open faced sandwich, with a giant meat/veggie patty on top of a thin layer of crust. Don't get me wrong - both the crust and the stuffing (meat, rutabaga, potato, onion and carrot) are good, but the pouch ruins the pasty. The one thing that Roy's does better than competitors is the cook on the rutabaga - the reason I don't like traditional pasties is because I don't like the taste of rutabaga. In this particularly pasty, they are cooked well and the taste is much milder in comparison with some competitors. (3/5) Turkey Cranberry Pasty ($7.65) - This is a smaller size 12 oz pasty. I was a bit apprehensive getting this as it seemed like it had a little too much going on. I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did. The interior is stuffed with turkey, potatoes, gravy, dressing, and cranberries. There isn't too much meat inside - I found that they kind of go overboard with the amount of potato and dressing. But everything is distributed pretty evenly throughout and it all works well together, creating a delicious bite every time. And unlike the traditional pasty, this one didn't fuse to the bag and I was able to actually eat it as intended. (4/5) I recommend visiting Roy's on Wednesdays as that's when they make their more modern pasty interpretations. Also, definitely go earlier in the day so they have all types available and you can pick and choose. As a bonus, if you sit in the main seating area, you can see the bakers making pasties and other treats through a giant window into the kitchen. Bathrooms - Two individual rooms, one for men, one for women. Overall rating of the food this visit: 3.5/5

We were headed up to A buddy's cabin near Calumet Michigan when my tummy started to grumble near Houghton MI.We stumbled in to Roy's Pasties and Bakery right on the lake and decided to grab a bite. It was early morning and the goodies were just coming out of the oven.The friendly staff made suggestions of what type pasties we should give a try.From breakfast pastie to chicken cheddar and then traditional.Wow! So many options.We got 2 of each.The best part of a pastie for me is the crust.Roy's crust was not as flaky as I would like it but they made up for it in flavor! My favorite was the traditional.The beef,potatoes and rutabaga was in harmony. People could be seen sipping dark roast and enjoying each others company by the lake.The atmosphere is definitely coffee and croissants. Roy's Pasties and Bakery seems huge but you get that small town service in a decent size city.This place is perfect for breakfast,lunch or hit up the the cafe same owner next door for dinner.

I had my first ever pasty here! It definitely lived up to the hype! We also had an apple fritter and a danish, and they were both amazing. The place itself had cute diner vibes inside, and lots of seating outside on the water as well! The staff was very friendly, even when they got very busy. Definitely a perfect family friendly place to grab a bite to eat!

Service is horrible, worker in the morning didn't even look up from her cell phone when I was trying to order. She then without being prompted, started complaining about coworkers not doing their job, using profanity and foul language. I just wanted a coffee but left with a bad taste in my mouth.

We loved their pasties a lot. We got the traditional one, the crust was 10/10. The blueberry cronut was excellent. Their other baked goods are pretty good as well

It's a pasty. The service was polite, helpful, and efficient. The pasty, an original, which my wife and I shared a couple of bites of, was fed to our golden retrievers as a reward for going on a good hike.

Can't really rate it because even though we arrived 30 minutes before close and they were out of hot food.

We had seen many signs for pasties but hadn't tried any. Before leaving the UP, we stopped at Roy's of Michigan to taste this local must. Wow! We loved the original pastie since the breakfast ones were sold out. The coffee and pasties were both fantastic. The counter service was friendly, and the line moved quickly. Inside and outside seating was plentiful, making it a comfortable stop.

Interestingly, this is a pleasant river view restaurant, so the ambiance is nice whether you're on the patio, inside or upstairs inside. I received explanations and recommendations from behind the counter, so the service was good. And, the Cornish style traditional pasty was delicious and reminiscent of my UK trip. This is a very good place to stop when visiting the historic Keweenaw peninsula.

Well known place in the UP and the positive reputation is probably well deserved. They were quite busy when we were there and the lady helping us was quite brusque and seemed aggravated when we didn't know the local terms for some of the items. The checkout clerk was much nicer! The donuts were very good, but not exceptional. I likened them to the Village Pantry (convenience store chain in Indianapolis) donuts, but smaller and a little greasier. The cherry cake donut was tasty but left a greasy feeling in my mouth. The maple bun (we called those maple cinnamon rolls or Persians), was good but again left a greasy mouth feel. The flavors shined but the donuts were lacking. The coffee was excellent!! My wife had two cups of the Snickerdoodle coffee and was very pleased, which is hard, as she can be a little bit of a coffee snob sometimes. The atmosphere was like that of any coffee shop run by hipsters; get your coffee and food and get out of their way. It's fine for a college town. Go to Roy's for the coffee and then go around the corner to Dunkin' for the donuts. Your wallet and mouth will thank you!

A fraction of what it was.Prices have risen,customer service was bland at best,sandwiches weren't completed as ordered,no sides included.I don't know what happened to Roy's but none of it is good unfortunately.

Great overall place, you can definitely get the pastie you want, just don't come too late. They have other stuff, but who wants anything but a pastie?

My friend took us here on a Friday morning during tech's graduation weekend and it was packed!! Rightfully so. They have a lot of different pasty options to choose from but I went for the traditional one as this was my first "real" U.P. pasty. It was so good! It was HUGE and it started crumbling a bit while trying to take it out of the bag. I do wish it was a bit warmer but that's okay. I heard the breakfast pasty's are delicious but they were sold out when we got there. I loved looking at their baked goods cases. Soooo many options to choose from and the strawberry and cream cheese pastry stood out to me. It was delicious. Not too sweet and tasted fresh. Quite a bit of seating options so it seems like it would be a nice place to meet someone for a casual breakfast or to study/get work done.

Stopped in for lunch on our way to Copper Harbor. Fabulous chicken salad sandwich with in house artisan bread. Interesting pasty choices. The bakery items look fabulous!

Got the OG pasty...so good and filling just like the miners enjoyed back in the day! Highly recommend Roy's for your pasty and pastries!

I can't even rate this place on the pasties because they are never in stock. Went there many hours of the day a few different times and never had anything. The desserts are good though nothing extravagant but good and fresh. My main complaint is that they do not make enough for the days sales on pasties, I feel like a restaurant that constantly sells out of an item would then make more for the day

Roy's pasties are top notch with amazing varieties to choose from. The breakfast pasty was so good that we had it two mornings in a row for breakfast. My kids also loved their apple fritter and strawberry cream cheese pastry. I would give Roy's six stars if it was an option.

After spending almost a week hiking and backpacking on Isle Royale I wanted good food (not freeze dried) and came here. Had an INSANE sandwich (Roy's Pick) which hit the spot. The s'mores cookie is so good as well. My friend got a pasty and also gave their compliments. Fast, kind service. Next time I find myself in Houghton I will be back!!!! There is a nice place to sit on the sit and also outdoor seating. Would be nice if some music was playing but I really can't complain. Thanks Roy!

If you have one place you need to stop and get pasties from, this is the one. We bought several pasties (breakfast pastie, danish pastie, and their spicy pastie). We loved the breakfast pastie and spicy pastie (this was our favorite). The danish pastie (another breakfast one) wasn't as good. Staff was amazing and we would love to come back.

Fabulous pasty and bakery in downtown Houghton in the Keweenaw peninsula. Open daily. They have giant cookies, donuts, cronuts, pasties all fresh. They also sell frozen pasties to take home to heat and eat. We came for their breakfast pasties and they had sold out of their fresh ones. So we bought their frozen breakfast pasties. Heated them up in the oven the next morning and they tasted great. Breakfast pasty: eggs, sausage, and potatoes. Danish pasty: danish dough, eggs, peppers, onions, & ham. Pasty with a kick: traditional pasty that substitutes rutabaga for jalapeños and hot sauce.

When in Upper Peninsula, MI a must try item is pasty. It's a pot pie version of Michigan. In Houghton, MI the best place to try pasty is Roy's. I tried traditional that had pork, turkey, potatoes, carrots and some really delicious seasoning. Portion is very filling for breakfast that makes you skip lunch. They also have some donuts and baked goods.

Absolutely great pasties definitely a must try for anyone who appreciates a great pasty

Stopped here for lunch after hiking all morning at the Lake of the Clouds. It was 2:00 in the afternoon and there was a quite line, which I consider a sign of a good place to eat. It was very clean and the staff were super friendly. My daughter had to have a U.P. pasty. She had the beef pasty and enjoyed it. I ordered the Portage sandwich which was delicious! My husband had the Hot Italian Beef sandwich. He said it was very flavorful but there could have been a little more meat in it. He likes a higher meat to bread ratio. We all split a yummy m&m cookie for dessert. The case of donuts and pastries looked very enticing as well. We would definitely stop again if in the area.

I ordered a cake for my son's birthday he works at mich tec they told me to order from there I live in the grand rapids area so I thought it would be o.k I also asked if they'd send a photo of the cake I paid 55.00 with my card here the cake that was delivered.I spoke to the owner who started arguing with me because I didn't leave my name it wasn't a nice conversation she stuck up for her cake decorators sadly this is the cake my son and his coworkers received on April 10th 2023 I was so embarrassed

What a place! Great baked goods, sandwiches, soups and, of course, pasties. Stopped in with a group for lunch and we truly enjoyed ourselves. Friendly and courteous service with a smile. We tried a large number of lunch items and then went back for cookies and bars for dessert. Don't miss this place for a delicious lunch. $$

Great sandwich and sweet treats spot with a view! Highly recommend grabbing a coffee and donut and walking along the water.

We went here specifically to try the Thanksgiving dinner pasties, and I have to say we both agreed they weren't that good. It sounded like a much better idea in theory, unfortunately. The amount of options here are pretty great though! Lots of types of bread (I bought a loaf of nisu bread, which I'm planning to make bread pudding with- I'll try to remember to update this after I make it tomorrow but we'll see haha), and lots of dessert options as well. They even have a lot of salads and sandwiches in addition to their pasty menu for lunch. Overall, worth a stop to pick up some goodies, even if I would skip the pasties here personally.

Food was good. Service average, no one is thrilled to be at work on a holiday weekend. I hate being hyper-intuitive. They were out of the chicken and broccoli Pastie, but the vegetarian was also delicious. I wasn't brave enough to try the turkey cranberry pastie. I am used to spelling it pasty. I don't know these things. Lol. Oatmeal chocolate chip cookie was delicious. Gracias. I appreciate the Pastie being served warm, om nom noms.

Delicious! I had a breakfast pasty, blueberry hill cronut, and dark roast coffee. All three were fresh and tasty. We'll be back!

A friend of our family brought fresh pasties for us to try. We absolutely understand why this family love this place. My favorite one was the "thanksgiving dinner" one. The crust is flaky and not heavy and it is stuffed with deliciousness!! The chicken broccoli pastie was also delicious. They freeze well and the instructions to reheat is so easy to do! I look forward to visiting in person sometime

doughnuts are good pasties are good it's all good they could get a little more variety in the doughnuts and stuff and I'm not too fond of the taste of the filling they use if they improve on these things id give it a 5

If you're reading this, your obviously either in the Houghton area, heading there, or thinking of going there. When you're in Houghton, there are a few places that I consider "must visit" places. This is quickly becoming one of those for me. Their pasties are most excellent - light crust and flavorful filling. I get the traditional because I'm kind of a purist. But I definitely enjoy that - no gravy or ketchup either! It is excellent plain. Their other bakery goods are excellent as well. When I want to take a taste of the UP home, I grab some of Roy's bread and Vollwerth's sausage to bring home. You really can't go wrong here.

I was visiting from out of town and this place came highly recommended from the locals. I ordered a $14 coffee cake, and I was a bit surprised it was delivered to me in a pizza box! Why not a plain white box or clear wrapping? A very classless presentation to say the least! I had to take it home to rewrap so my hosts didn't think I read invite wrong. Its too easy to blame on supply issues = I don't care.

We drove all the way from Houston to see what the Keweenaw region had in store for us, and the pasty was definitely a highlight of the trip. Their deserts are out of this world and the view was also such a treat. GET A PASTY HERE.

I love all of the food at Roy's and it's so wonderful to eat inside with the gorgeous view of the portage. I do feel like it's a touch expensive but it's still worth it. All of the pastries I've tried have been delicious and same for the sandwiches. The breakfast sandwich and chicken salad based sandwiches are some of my favorites along with the bakery special and the potato salad is definitely worth ordering. I wish I could go here every day.

Husband got the Traditional pastie, not very flavorful and dry. He came across a large piece of gristle, most of it went into the trash. I had the Turkey and Cranberry to try something new. It was ok, fairly oily on the bottom. It was moist. Asked for utensils, were waved over to where they should have been located, but they were all empty. We sat outside and the tables were clean. Landscaping is pretty.

Went in today just for sweets. Everything tasted sweet except their service is not! Workers do not seem very happy, perhaps they are just tired and overworked? My son who lives in Houghton said he experiences the same.

The pastie was pretty gross- I had the breakfast one and it was lukewarm and had a horrible mouth feel. It was mealy. The people working there were fine. I tried a donut that was actually pretty good but I'd never get a pastie there again.

The best local bakery in Houghton. Right by the water, it's a great place to grab coffee, a loaf of bread to go, pasties or doughnuts.

It may be my goal to try pasties that are recommended to be. Roy's was recommended and it was amazing. I will show mine pictured with ketchup and it really isn't needed. They usually sell out by afternoon. My husband and I were lucky. They weren't sold out and it was so good. Flaky crust, chunks of carrot adding some natural sweetness and parsnips, onion, potatoes and beef. What I especially like is this pasty had big chunks of veggies. OMG! My husband and I split one it was pretty big but, we also split a bowl of their homemade soup Chicken Curry. My husband got dessert that was so rich, he could only eat the sessions. It was called Grandma's Mistake. It was a good mistake! Chocolate, peanut butter, crispies, butter and magic. The view is breathtaking, great service, great food.

Best Pasties and baked goods in town! Will be going back next time we drive through. Little hard to get to but we'll worth it.
