A family-run café in a converted 1930s gas station fuels Japantown’s daily rhythm with espresso, local pastries, and community events. Loved by locals and a perfect stop before exploring nearby museums.

If you’re looking for delicious coffee and pastries, this is the place to be! I always enjoy their spicy mocha with buttery galettes, each with a variety of fillings — such a perfect combo. Everything here is super tasty, and the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. The staff are friendly and make you feel right at home. You can sit out on the front patio, soak in the vibe, and just relax — it’s my little happy spot. ❤️

I’m so sad to have to post a negative review. I love local coffee places like this, but I’m shocked to see that no one is commenting about how the coffee tastes like motor oil. Even worse - I got an iced coffee and it was so bad I got a hot coffee (hoping maybe it was brewed fresh?) and the taste was exactly the same. Unsure if this is maybe a me issue or the coffee is a bad batch this morning, but I can only describe the coffee as acidic, bitter, and overall hard to drink. I couldn’t have more than a few sips of either drink. The spam musubi and the korean garlic bun were pretty good! My friend also said the chai was alright.

Nostalgic, great food (the cherry tart was awesome). Wonderful treats (cookie was great). Complementary milk bones for my pup back home. I love the atmosphere. And the classic Coca Cola machine is nostalgic

Finally I got the chance to try Roy's and it didn't disappoint. From the outside looking in, Roy's has the best location. Situated in the corner lot in the heart of Japan Town, across from the Buddhist temple, Roy's has a cute outdoor seating area with ample spaces. In a sunny day like today, you can see people hanging out here with friends and pets, having a sip of coffee while catching up or doing their homework. Parking is a bit tricky as it's Japan town. But if you're willing to walk a bit, there're always street parkings 1 or 2 blocks away. One step inside Roy's and you'll be taken back to older historic times. Roy's so charming with two corner big window, classic coke dispensing machine and a red brick wall with arts and plants donning it. The delicious coffee smell mixed with yummy pastries welcomed me and made me feel immediately at home. The line was a bit long but it moved fast. I order Green Tea Latte on their special menu. My drink came out fast. I really enjoyed how light and smooth it was! The latte left a lovely aftertaste and I grew more and more in love with every sip. I'll definitely come back on a different day to actually sit down and enjoy a slow Saturday morning next time here. Until then, sayonara!

I love this neighborhood cafe. There's always a good mixed crowd of hipsters, children, and elderly. Coffee is yummy and service is fast. They also have some shirts and beanies for sale. A perk is that you can find out about events going on in the neighborhood from the cork board!

Google
Neighborhood gem with excellent breakfast and coffee options. The drip coffee is delicious and we really enjoyed the mushroom and onion brekkie. Everyone was friendly at Roy's, as were all the people eating there.

Roy’s Station serves Verve coffee. It is extraordinary. The young people who work there are very knowledgeable and friendly. They remember our preferences. It is such a pleasure to go for a cup of coffee to Roy’s Station. In addition people working there are artists. Check out the creation on my latte.

This place is the heart of the Japan Town community. It's a meeting place for locals, it's a hub for anyone who has a dog, and the family that run it are some of the most wonderful people I've had the pleasure of meeting. Anyone who stops in only once might just see a local coffee shop, but anyone who comes back and spends some time there will see a thriving neighborhood hub.

Yelp
Love the drinks at Roy's! I like to get their specialty coffees and teas! The pastries are also pretty good. I like to bring my dog and hang out on the patio! While the dogs can't go inside the building, there's plenty of seats in their large patio.

Yelp
TL;DR: A lovely and historic stop that serves a decent latte and mini galettes. The Details: Roy's Station is a location with so much charm. It's a historic gas station that was repurposed into an inviting neighborhood cafe. They still have some paraphernalia from their old gas station days, including a repaired old-school Coca Cola vending machine! Even though they don't have drinks with the same flair and creativity as say Voyagers nor do they roast their own beans, they serve Verve and know how to make a good latte. They also offer various mini galettes; I tried the leek and potato one, and while I wish it was toasted slightly longer, I enjoyed it for brunch. Service has been friendly all of the times I've visited--no complaints here! Overall, a lovely neighborhood coffee shop that I'd be happy to visit again if in the area.

Yelp
Great place for coffee and pastries for a quick breakfast. Service was quick. Hubby liked the coffee. Place was really busy and they do allow for pets as they had seating in the outside patio. Both my husband and I got two different drinks but they tasted similar and as they were both served in the same way, not sure which was which. lol.

Yelp
Roy's Station Coffee & Tea located on the corner of 5th & Jackson Ave. They offer outside patio seating and inside seating with A/C. The staff are super nice and friendly. The decor is simplistic but has that homey feel. They even have a working glass bottle soda machine. One unisex restroom with code. I ordered a Dirty Chai (chai + espresso). It was good.
google avatar

Neha B.

Yelp
Almond croissant is so good we went back and got another! The dirty Thai and iced green tea with lemonade are also amazing, would definitely get again. The sweetness was just right for me. The garlic cream cheese bun was too sweet for me, it's more of a Korean style and just isn't my favorite. Love the interior and there's plenty of outdoor seating, this is definitely a neighborhood staple. I didn't know it used to be an old gas station back in the day! The baristas are all so friendly here.

Yelp
I'm sure this is a one-off experience, but still pretty disappointing... We were driving through Japantown and saw a bunch of people sitting outside this coffee shop. It looked so nice, so after we got our poke we headed over for some much needed coffee. We ordered a Dirty Chai and tried their Coco Bee Latte, one of their specials for the month. Here's where the experience turned south: they had a young kid helping out (which I think is great btw), but she dropped the dirty chai on the floor. When I picked it up from the counter, there was a long awkward pause (I think the barista was hoping I didn't see her drop it) and with a lot of hesitation, they said "so you want us to make you a new one?" I politely said yes and no worries cause I didn't want her to feel bad, but after some reflection, I wondered why wouldn't that be the default solution? Then the coco bee latte came out and it's a hot drink? If my memory serves me right, the description says something about "cold brew latte," which makes me think that this would be an iced drink? (It's not). Cutting to the chase, the dirty chai was sour and the coco bee latte was extremely sweet. So overall, not a great experience. I did see some other reviews about the service and totally understand the frustration. I mean it was ME saying "no worries" even when they didn't apologize and hesitated to rectify the situation. Total: ~$15 with tip

Yelp
Nice little gem in Japan Town! They have ouside tables where everyone was having a great time with their fur babies. I had the Carmelito Latte, the barista recommended I added cinnamon to it and it was the best recommendation it was so good. I also loved that they had a gluten free brownie also very good. The service was amazing our barista remembered our name when we came back to order an iced Thai Tea which was also sooo good.

Yelp
It has been a while since I've been back here, and I must admit the quality and care that they show when making the drinks has greatly improved. Before, when I came here and ordered a cappuccino, I got some very bubbly foam on it. But now, I have ordered this latte and mocha, and I get really good latte art on it. The service was fast and responsive. They made sure that dairy milk was okay, so it was a good reminder for me to order oat milk. The ambiance hasn't changed, and I have always appreciated its embrace of its past as a gas station.

Yelp
San Jose Japantown is a lovely area, I've admired their restaurants and shops but haven't really taken a deep dive of historic spots. Here was my experience. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking. Plenty of parking but it can get busy. Seating: Inside and outside seating. Room for 40 people or so. Good for small groups or individual. Vibes: Japantown is a pretty charming place. A lot of local shops and eateries. The spot itself is pretty charming. You get the historic feelings of a gas station but the modern feelings from its current design. I enjoy the lite rock music in the back. Good place to catch up with a friend or get some solo work done. FOOD: Sencha (Recommend) Served hot and as advertised - a little grassy, some sweetness, and oceanic tones. I morever felt the Earthiness like all most green teas are. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Great! Got my order pretty quickly. TL; DR OVERALL: 4 Stars. Good selections, pleasant drink, and great experience. I felt like I was immersed in Japantown by hanging out in this area journaling and observing the interactions of people. There may be your chain coffee shops but this one stands out with its specialized drinks and great service. Best wishes to the Murotsune family! Until next time. #RepresentASIAN TIPS: *They serve some lite brekkie and baked goods (while supplies last)

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood for work and stopped by for a quick caffeine boost. They are similarly priced to the other coffee shops in DTSJ. I ordered my usual espresso and took it to go. I typically order a triple shot but this time I opted for a double. Don't be like me, I was lowkey drowsy (or dehydrated). Service was quick and there was a good number of customers seated outside on a Monday morning. It's a nice quaint shop that used to be a gas/service station. Check them out if you happen to be in Japantown.

Yelp
Drink: Matcha w/ Strawberry. I love me some matcha & strawberry but this missed the mark on the Strawberry. The matcha was good but the strawberry was like a syrup and not fresh, which is what I prefer. Ambiance: Hip coffee shop vibes, friendly staff, and a good amount of outside seating. Parking: Street parking only and it can definitely be difficult to find a spot. Bring your walking shoes and check out some Japantown shops along the path to Roy's

Yelp
The brewed coffee here has a most unpleasant salty taste. They are probably using unfiltered hard tap water. It's a shame they can't make a decent cup of coffee as the location is quite pleasant.
google avatar

Bernard S.

Yelp
I came in around 10 AM on a weekday and ordered a cold brew. They have a great selection of drinks and pastries. I would've sat down and have something to eat but I did not have enough time but maybe next time. Overall, Roy's have great service and the ambiance is really good! I highly recommend this place!

Kenny H.

Yelp
I ordered the matcha latte and it tasted ok but the vibe here is really nice. They bring out your drink and food which was really cool and I really like the spam musubi that they had.
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
I've seen Roy's in Japantown for years but I finally stopped by for the first time several weeks ago and ordered the iced matcha latte. I was pretty disappointed since the matcha taste was pretty weak and watered down, and the drink was overly milky. If I come back in the future, I don't think I would get the matcha latte as you can get better drinks elsewhere though I'd be open to trying another drink in the menu. It can be pretty hard to find a seat on the weekends, as it gets pretty busy. Street parking is available throughout Japantown.

Yelp
Great coffee and tea here. We stop by every time we are in Japantown. Service is fast and friendly. The pastries are great too - get the galletes.

Yelp
Saw this place when we first arrived to San Jose two days ago, but it was already closed, so today we made sure to stop by first thing in the morning as we are headed home to SoCal. Great atmosphere with friendly staff who greet you and make your order speedy fast! Lots of cool old timey decor like a corded landline telephone, a gas pump, a soda fridge. I think maybe this location used to be a gas station now converted to a cool coffee shop. Lots of yummy looking pastries too, but today we just got iced dirty chais and a drip coffee. A couple indoor tables, lots of tables on the patio where you can people watch from this corner of Japantown. If I lived here, I would visit all the time!

Sasikala M.

Yelp
Cute retro coffee shop which brings in a chill crowd. Coffee is pretty good with lots to choose from goes great with the fresh pastries .
google avatar

Briana V.

Yelp
After attending viva Calle bike function , Roy's was a stop on the rest break. The line was pretty long but went by fairly quickly. I got the matcha strawberry which was fairly good, I was hoping for the strawberry to be a bit freshly like a puree. The pastries in the glass looked amazing so next time I will have to switch up my drink order and maybe try a pastry. Service was very friendly and loved the old school gas station building.

Shevata K.

Yelp
Got a Teddy Graham latte, tasted of cinnamon, slightly sweet with notes of vanilla. It was a good latte and would go back if I was in the area, cute outdoor space with friendly knowledgeable staff. Would recommend checking out
google avatar

Yelp
This is a small but cute cafe. There was a line up out the door on a Saturday morning. They have several sweet and savoury French pastries and to my delight more savoury ones. They offer to heat up the pastries when you place the order. They also serve coffee and tea as the name suggests. There are also Japanese English children books, very family friendly place. Some indoor and outdoor seating available but does get a bit crowed with the lines in the way.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Aesthetically, this place has it. The large outdoor patio is a perfect place to grab a coffee and hang with friends. Otherwise, Roy's is mediocre at best. My iced vanilla latte was overwhelmingly sweet in an artificial kind of way. The ham and cheese croissant was good though but I swear it being warmed up was it being microwaved which kind of ruins the pastry. However, it was a good size .

Yelp
Really cute coffee spot located in San Jose's Japantown! Parking can be a little tough during peak hours since it is street parking only, but there was plentiful of parking on the Friday morning we came in. The vibe of the shop is really cute and has an old timey feel since it is decorated as an old (gas?) station. The inside is pretty spacious and there are lots of tables if you want to study here or just hang out! They also have a bathroom! Service is really nice and they were able to give good recommendations to my friends and I! We ended up getting the sweetened matcha latte, mango creamsicle smoothie, and a churro decaf latte. The matcha latte wasn't as sweet as I'd like, but still very earthy and good for people who don't have a sweet tooth! The mango creamsicle was a little overpowered by the creamsicle part and tasted more like yakult, but was still refreshing. The churro decaf latte also wasn't really sweet, but had a good cinnamony after taste to it.
google avatar

Malisa S.

Yelp
I honestly feel that this might be a one off experience but it's still really disappointing to pay over 8bucks for a latte and have it be 1/3 foam. The latte itself was also not very good ... It's already a splurge to get coffee from a Shop now so I'm just a little upset. I love supporting small businesses and hope that no one else has this experience. But I don't think I would ever come back to get a coffee from here again. Such a bummer since it looked super cute , busy and the staff were friendly.
google avatar

Tina K.

Yelp
An old gas station turned into a coffee shop? Yes please! This place is right on the corner in Japantown and offers a beautiful outdoor patio with plenty of shade and umbrellas. The patio is also very dog friendly. Inside, the coffee shop stays true to its retro vibe. The employees were nice and the menu had a bit of everything. I loved my matcha, unsweetened and the mocha was great!
google avatar

Janice O.

Yelp
Came in one afternoon for a Vanilla Toffee Frappe. There were a lot of people ordering and sitting outside, but it didn't take long to get my order. The people who helped me were wonderful and I didn't feel rushed. The frappe was good. Definitely tasted the flavors. Would definitely come back again.
google avatar

Yelp
Love the coffee, pastries, and bone here. Located in Japantown. I had some work related things to do across the street from here and decided to take a work meeting with a colleague here. It's hard to find a small independent coffee shop that is good without it be overly exaggerated.
google avatar

Kay O.

Yelp
Yeah, after year I come here and it's always delicious, filling, and I love their customer service! I love sitting outside and looking at their amazing succulents that have been growing for generations I've been told, and I love the corner spot lively yet quiet environment.
google avatar

Yelp
Best local coffee shop in Japantown, SJ! The staff is super friendly and the locals are all so nice. Great place to grab and go coffee or stay for a while with their indoor and outdoor seating options! Check out their Japantown merch too, my hubby just scored an awesome limited edition tumbler! We LOVE Roy's!
google avatar

Tara L.

Yelp
I won a gift card for Roy's from an auction in Japantown earlier this year and I finally had an opportunity to use it today. I wasn't too impressed with their coffee, unfortunately. I had a spiced mocha which the barista recommended and it was served lukewarm and a bit too spicy for me. It gave me heartburn and I couldn't finish it. My husband asked the barista what the strongest coffee was and he didn't answer him and just rung him up for black coffee with an extra shot... okay....only black coffee for you, sir! I honestly don't think the barista was in the mood to be there today. My daughter had a sweetened green tea latte which she enjoyed. We also got a banana bread, lemon loaf, and an orange poppyseed loaf which were okay.

Yelp
A nice place to cool down after walking around Japantown! Lots of seating and friendly staff. They offer a unique variety of drinks and besides coffee the smoothies are pretty good too!

Yelp
Roy's Station Location: in San Jose, Japantown, on the corner of Jackson and Fifth st. Ambiance and Decor: Throw back of an old school gas station mixed with contemporary and Silicon Valley Vibe. Huge outdoor sitting area which is available for pet friendly enjoyment. Service: Friendly smile. Barista's seem to know many of the locals. Food: i have yet to eat here since I've only came here for their coffe. Drinks: they cover the gambit of expresso drinks ie white mocha, mocha, churro churro Latte, chocolate cookie frappe... During my visit I ordered a standard iced mocha. The expresso had a deep floral richness as it was mixed with the chocolate. Overall: 5/5 totally worth the visit. Prices are inexpensive and the local crowd makes everyone feel like family.
google avatar

Sahiba M.

Yelp
Cute cafe on corner of the road, with outdoor sitting. I went with my laptop to work here and took an outdoor seat. The staff is welcoming. They don't have a lot of options, I wish they had more options to eat but could see only a few quiche, brownie, banana breads. I found the inside decor too cute!!!
google avatar

Kam B.

Yelp
Ambience and aesthetic was super nice and staff was really kind. However if you like quality coffee/syrups I wouldn't come here. I got an iced vanilla oat milk latte and the coffee itself was very overpowered by the artificial vanilla syrup, and the ice was already melted when I got it making it more watery. Would come back for the pastries and tea maybe.

Anabel H.

Yelp
Normally order a latte, it's extremely expensive. The staff that I've encountered is not too friendly, I really want to like this place but they seem bothered the last few times I visited. Biggest downfall as a parent of young ones is that there is no changing table. Please add a changing table, thanks!
google avatar

Jane M.

Yelp
Stopped by Roy's while I was in the area. Tried their dirty chai latte and that was delicious. Also ordered their spinach and chard pastry which was good. The mocha was okay. Service was really fast even though they had a huge line. They do not allow dogs inside so if you have a pet you have to stay outdoors. All in all a good place to grab quick breakfast and coffee.

Yelp
Cozy vibes and the best matcha latte in Japantown. My go-to spot for a relaxed afternoon

Yelp
The drinks here are always so consistent and so good! I meet my friends here to catch up and it's always a hit cause there is something for everyone! Service on point, ambiance is always relaxed and welcoming. Go support this small business!

Yelp
Another spot I tried to find my favorite coffee place is Roy's Station. Trying to find a well balanced coffee place has been an adventure. Here are my thoughts. Service: Friendly and helpful service here. They were super welcoming when we arrived and attentive as well. It didn't take that long for them to make the drinks, but it looked I came at a good time during the weekday. I usually see longer lines on the weekends. Food: They do serve breakfast items here. Mostly I saw that it was from Zannattos. Nothing wrong with that actually because I like Zannattos food. Their sandwiches are always YUM! They also had other items like a croissant and the usual pastries. I wanted to order one, but I totally forgot it when it came time for me to order. The drinks I ordered was from the barista special. I ordered the SJ Taiko Tropic Thunder and Maggie's Mocha Toffee. I thought the mocha toffee was delicious. Though I should've ordered it as an iced drink but I spaced out and forgot to mention it. It wasn't bad hot anyways. It had a perfect balanced between sweet and bitter. You can taste the sweet chocolate and the bits of toffee with ever sip. Ambiance: Cute design and brings me back to a car hop kind era. They didn't quite have a lot of decorations going on, but some aesthetics in the right places. They do have some seating inside but there are more seating areas in the front. Would I come again? Maybe?
google avatar

Samson W.

Yelp
I had been wanting to come here since it is very popular. For having a coffee shop in the middle of San Jose Japantown. I ordered iced mocha and it was amazing. Though it was a little bit on the pricey side. Pretty much all the seating is outside. Though two tables inside. I would likely come back. Because of no parking lots.
google avatar

Eddie G.

Yelp
Small little coffee shop right on the corner. Service was great but my coffee actually had too much milk I feel and the syrups they used tasted very artificial. Half way through my drink I'm I got a slight headache.
google avatar

Yelp
stopped by the afternoon for a quick caffeinated pick me up and ended up with a delicious savory snack as a bonus! i got the brazilian black guava iced tea and my boyfriend tried the mango creamsicle blended drink. we also decided to split a chicken pot pie galette (and yes! they will warm it up for you) they had a few other savory galette options in addition to some basic sweets (cookies, brownies, and flavored breads like lemon/banana/etc) the people working here when i stopped in were welcoming and friendly~ service is good and fast! inside there's a couple of tables and some bar seating and some fun books about san jose & japantown for you to get some mental snacks along with your actual snacks. although there's not too many tables inside, they have a nice seating patio seating area with umbrellas (make sure to grab a free treat from inside for your four-legged friend) tl;dr- cute little coffee stop on your way in (or out) of japantown
google avatar

Evangelina B.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Roy's! I'm so embarrassed as I live in San Jose and love trying all the local coffee shops! I so regret not coming here sooner their coffee and food are delicious! I ordered a spiced mocha with almond milk and a spinach + chard pasty. Both were VERY delicious! I was so hungry I forgot to take a picture of my Spinach+ Chard pastry. But I highly recommend both items! Today was an event in Japan town and the line was a bit long but they were pumping out orders quickly! Highly recommend their business!
google avatar

Leila S.

Yelp
The folks here are friendly and can help you if you have a question. This is my go-to coffee place when I need a moment to myself. There's not a lot of seating indoors. But I find it more enjoyable sitting at there outdoor patio. I love the creamy texture and hint of cinnamon in my churro latte. And it's great they have a variety of food from local places like the matusbi lady. Truly worth a visit if your in Downtown San Jose.

Yelp
I'm not one to typically write reviews on a small business, let alone write a bad review, but I feel as though this needs to be said. Yesterday afternoon (August 26th), I went into Roy's Station to grab tea and a little treat before my work day. I ended up getting an iced herbal tea, and a brookie (a combination of a brownie and a cookie). The brookie in the display case was labeled as gluten free and vegan, and was sitting alongside other pastries. What the label failed to mention....is that it was made with both almond flour AND peanut butter. Typically when things are gluten free, the alternatives used are rice flour or almond flour. When it's made with almond flour, there's usually some sort of disclosure letting folks know of the other allergens included, in this case, it would have been tree nuts. I also had my guard down because it shared a case with other pastries i've had before, which were nut free. Lack of labeling PLUS cross contamination. A double whammy. Two bites in, and I immediately go into anaphylactic shock. The symptoms included were me throwing up, wheezing, face swelling, tongue swelling, my body turning red, being covered in hives, eyes getting watery, my sinuses got congested and I couldn't breathe which lead to a panic attack as I rushed home to get Benadryl. I decided then to cut my losses and go to the ER instead, where I spent the rest of the day. Now I'm going to be on steroids for the rest of the week. .....all of which could have been avoided if the case was properly labeled. I thought I could trust this small business since I lived in Japantown for years and is somewhat a community staple. Very disappointed with their prioritization of for those who are vegan/gluten free, and their lack of care for folks who have other dietary restrictions. If you have a nut allergy, or really any kind of allergy, please practice caution when buying from Roy's! Especially since they aren't practicing caution when selling you pastries. Update: We went to in store to tell them today, and they changed the label to say that it is a 'Peanut Butter Brookie'. When I purchased it, it was labeled as just a Brookie, with the description being '(Brownie + Cookie)'. At least they changed it!

Yelp
Roy's is a neighborhood gem and a place you should support over big chains like Peet's and Starbucks. Their coffee is delicious and their espresso only comes in shots of two- yes please. They have an array of sweet and savory pastries to pair with your coffee including croissants, quiche, moon pies, danish, lots of them have fancy French names and every one we've tried has been delish. They also have smoothies and teas if coffee isn't your thing. My daughter and I have started coming here weekly and it is always a highlight.

Noelle's Yelp Notebook 2022 The Pandemic Chronicles Roy's Station Coffee & Tea is somewhere my parents loved going. It's only recently I have gone here with family and friends. Located in the Japantown area of San Jose you'll find a friendly group of people making coffees and teas. They also sell savory or sweet pastries, pound cake slices, spam musubi. There is no indoor seating. They only have outdoor seating. Sometimes they close early if it's raining- a few months ago we stopped by and they were closed when it was raining. My favorites here are their iced lattes and savory quiche like pastry. This is a great spot for coffee and a snack. Noelle's Notes Outdoor seating only Love their lattes

Yelp
Excellent coffee shop in the heart of San Jose Japantown. Went there with a friend after a satisfying lunch at Kaita nearby. She ordered a decaf latte, I ordered an Andy special, which was quite similar to a Havana cappuccino as it contained cinnamon and honey. The orders were ready quickly, but they forgot to add either honey or cinnamon to mine, which made it just a plain old boring cappuccino! They fixed the mistake but did not remake my drink, so I didn't get the beautiful heart design on the foam (this is what my father would describe as first world problems!). My refurbished cappuccino was tasty, and my friend enjoyed her drink as well. Will be back for sure when I'm back in the neighborhood.
