How New York Ended Up With Nine Chinatowns | Eater NY

"I find Ru Yi to be a seafood-focused Chinese restaurant that’s part of the Broadway cluster in Elmhurst." - Stefanie Tuder

We had moo shu vegetables and pork belly! Ask them what do you like to eat. They give great suggestions. We had a fantastic lunch and while it is an hour and a half away from home. It was would be the drive. We were heading home from a visit to Kentucky.

I dined in around 1pm on a Tuesday for lunch. Got a table and was able to order right away. So this is a Chinese restaurant with a sushi bar and some Thai dishes as well. I ordered the chicken pad Thai which looked and tasted almost just like pad Thai from a Thai restaurant for a fraction of the price (Thai restaurants always charge way more for pad thai). The only difference is that real pad thai from a Thai restaurant will have both shrimp and chicken, tofu and eggs. But for the fraction of the price of pad thai from Thai restaurants, I was happy with what I ordered and it was still very delicious. They also have affordable lunch specials here. My pad Thai also came with the choice of spring roll, soup or salad. I chose the wonton soup and it was very good authentic small Chinatown style wontons. I would definitely come back here again.

Google
The food was good and the service was good for a busy place. It is cheaper to order takeout because you will get a better bang for your $$. It is an inflated menu inside, but otherwise, we did enjoy this place.

Google
Ordered a dish with shrimp...got chicken. Ordered fried rice, got brown rice, undercooked. Ordered spicy, got sweet. Orange beef was average. Fried rice had 1 pea & 1 sliver of carrot. Very disappointing 😞

Google
Driving from Tennessee to Illinois I stopped here to get lunch. It was busy. It smelled good. Service was prompt. Nice menu selections. I ordered General Tso's Chicken with Wonton Soup and Green Tea. The chicken was plentiful but overly sweet and 70% breading. Soup was decent, slightly bland with big tasty dumplings. Here's the Breakdown: Decent, plentiful food in a busy setting +3 stars. I woukd go again to try a non breaded option.

Google
They are always super nice here. Since it's only a mile away I often order take out and that's when you find out how shoddy and skimpy the meals can be. They don't cut back on portions and the food is tasty as if in a fine Chinese restaurant. I know of at least 2 different families that live well outside the county (40 plus minutes away) who often make the drive for the food. Try it and you will agree. The place take pride in its food.

Google
Stopped in on my way home to get dinner. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was nice and the food was so yummy. I asked about the pineapple chicken being too spicy for me, and she said we could make it for you, so it's not spicy at all. Wonderful visit all around, and we will definitely be back.

Google
Both times I've tried this place for carry out they've made major mistakes- once neglecting to leave out pork ( for our holiday family meal) and then left out an entree . The taste is great, but two family meals ( over $20/ per person) were ruined . I'll gladly change rating once they get it right. A good expediter needed. Also, it would be fabulous to have descriptions of sushi on menu.

Yelp
Stopped in Ru Yi for dinner while staying in Columbus. The first thing we noticed was a lot of take out orders. We ordered the crab Rangoon and egg rolls, both were good and piping hot. We then had the House Duck and the Basil Chicken. We loved both. The duck had a nice crispy skin even with the sauce on top. The Basil Chicken had a ton of assorted vegetables and great flavor. Both were done Thai style. The service was very good. We will return whenever we are in town.

Yelp
Went on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. Loved the lunch specials. I got the sushi special, the salad was great that came with it, I would love to buy a bottle of the carrot ginger dressing. The bento box was great to try a lot of little things. Service was great! They were so good with my daughter. It was right off highway, would def stop by again if in the area.

Yelp
Great sushi every time we go. Can never finish a drink before they bring another. The egg drop soup is so nostalgic. I recommend it to everyone! Atmosphere is fairly authentic, and the manager will often come and chat with you.

Ganiyat A.

Yelp
We first got shrimp roll and that came out hot and nice. Then they brought in my meal (mei fun with beef) and the horrible smell of the beef is out of this world. Honestly, I do not know how they felt comfortable to serve me that and I didn't even know how to make my complaints of them using spoiled beef, because of the language barrier. We paid for it and left My partner got shrimp with rice and that seemed fine. I learned that shrimp is probably a safer option at these restaurants. Definitely ruined my day and I couldn't eat anything again.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch. Nice clean place. Reasonable prices. The service was good. The Pad Thai was good. The egg roll could have been bigger and a little better for the price. I'll be back. Wish they had Pho.

Jeff ..

Yelp
Each time I eat there it is always enjoyable. Food is very good and staff are very effective.

Yelp
Went here for dinner on a Wednesday evening and it was a wonderful experience. Very friendly staff with quick service, they even ran my glasses back to me when I forgot them on the table The food was delicious and came out fast. While the building outside looks rather small the inside actually has plenty of dining area as not to feel cramped or crowded. Definitely will be going back.

Stormy M.

Yelp
Staff was very friendly but that's some of the most overcooked bland food I've ever tasted
google avatar

Yelp
RuYi has great food and we often go for a packed lunch time to eat here. First time for dinner and while it was quieter it gave us time to check out the menu and really try some other items then our lunchtime specials.. My son (an asian food addict) and my very picky daughter were able to find really good fresh meals from a range of Chinese, Japanese and Thai delights and we will certainly trek down to Columbus to eat here again.. 3 empty plates and no cries of Dessert please !!! winner winner

Yelp
When I feel like Oriental this is the place I go. Love their garlic chicken with a side of the garlic sauce, freid rice and an egg roll for lunch. The meal is plenty large with enough for lunch the next day.
google avatar

Steve V.

Yelp
Very average too below average Asian food, recommend the Chinese selections over sushi as the latter is substandard
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
BEWARE!! The service here is bizarre, we had a man hovering over our table and he touched my baby without asking. We could hardly understand him. The other waitress had her belly button sticking out and smelled horrible. The food was HORRIBLE. I got sushi, my husband got pad Thai. The pad Thai tasted and smelled like dog food. The sushi was bland and disgusting. The ambiance was all around creepy. Never ever ever going again, waste of $50.

Yelp
Worst experience, and it's not the first time with such kind of mess at RuYi during COVID. Order management totally in a mess. At 5pm, on group chat order the dinner, totally forgot to prepare when at 6:07pm I called RuYi to cross check, then reminded in the call, I could pick up at 6:30pm. Came at 6:38pm, Nothing was ready, CAN NOT BELIEVE!!! Food taste is not bad, BUT SERVICE is terrible...... remove 2 STARs due to poor service.

Pierrick H.

Yelp
Driving home to Chicagoland from Kentucky, and my son found this place along I65. We had low expectations, but were greatly surprised and impressed. The food was terrific and very reasonably priced and the service was excellent.

Ava N.

Yelp
i am vegetarian and highly allergic to fish, i ordered a vegetarian roll and they put it in with a crab roll and the crab smeared all over my roll which left it ruined. i called very nicely and asked if they could just redo my roll or just give me a refund because the roll was no longer edible for me. they absolutely refused and hung up on me. they told me it's not their fault im vegetarian basically and i can deal with it. i was nice the whole time and the lady talking to me was so rude the entire time.
google avatar

Mike F.

Yelp
My first time eating here. The food was really good and so was the service. It wasn't real busy. I will have to come back.
google avatar

Katlin H.

Yelp
This place is by far the most personable Japanese restaurant around! As soon as we walked in we were greeted by who I assume was the manager or owner. He immediately started a conversation with us and continued to joke around with our 4 year old son. Service was fast and they checked on us multiple times to make sure we were okay! Definitely will be coming back to this place more often

Yelp
Dining options in Columbus are rather limited in general and extremely limited for Asian restaurants. This is a great place though and not just because it is a big fish in a small pond. If I lived closer, I would come here frequently. Their lunch specials are terrific. For $6 or $7, you get a soup or salad, choice of rice, and an entree. The cooks obviously know what they're doing and the food is excellent. The cuisine is kind of a mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Thai. Service is prompt and friendly so no complaints there either. The dining room is nicely appointed and there were several other people there when I came for a weekday lunch. This is no carryout joint (although I saw several people getting takeout). You can bring a date here for dinner and not feel cheap at all (even though your meal WILL be cheap).

Yelp
I am not a huge Chinese food fan but my husband was really wanting chicken and broccoli. I have been to Ru Yi before and got a dish that I liked so I agreed to go, knowing I could at least get that same dish. (I forget the name). Anyway, I ventured out and got Shrimp and Vegetables and it was great! It was a big portion so I was able to have leftovers the next day. This dish, leftover, was better the second day too. I also love hot and sour soup and theirs was really good too...kind of spicy but good spicy. If you go through the week during lunch time I think they have inexpensive lunch options which is always a plus.

Gail H.

Yelp
This is my go to restaurant for Asian. Lunch or dinner, I've never had a problem with it. My favorite is the Tempura lunch and dinner. The lunch "box" is in a lacquered box with a salad topped with an awesome, house made, ginger dressing, a couple of pieces of sushi, pot stickers and your main choice. ok, now I'm hungary - better head over before lunch is over :)

Angie H.

Yelp
Food is always good as well as the sushi. It's a small restaurant but they stay busy. They are very busy with takeout and very quick to prepare.

Yelp
I was tired of fighting I-65 rush hour traffic and we decided to take a break, get off the interstate and get some food. There are certainly many fast food options around this particular exit but we were in the mood for Asian food. This restaurant certainly has it all! Authentic Chinese food, American-Chinese food and even sushi. We ordered off the authentic Chinese menu and got pork & string beans, double cooked pork, Szechuan chicken (which was not on the menu btw but suggested by the waiter) and salt & pepper shrimp. The food came out fast and the dishes were quite tasty. People around us were ordering sushi and seemed to be enjoying it. Service was prompt and friendly. We really enjoyed the food and it hit the spot. If we lived around this area we would certainly come here more often. However, after an hour or we had to get back on the interstate, but we were satisfyingly full, and had considerably less traffic to contend with :).

Jeff R.

Yelp
Excellent! Great service. Rolls and Entrees were extremely fresh and flavorful. Best General Tso I've had, and the bathrooms are very clean!

Yelp
Ru Yi was a nice alternative to hitting up a chain during our roadtrip to Indy yet I still left feeling perplexed... So you have tofu available. Why are you not able to substitute another protein (chicken) for tofu in a dish? For example, our waitress had a hard time grasping our orders and I think I threw her for the ultimate loop (really??) when I asked if they could substitute tofu in the General Tso Chicken. She looked confused and told me no. As a professional vegan, I have NEVER had any dining establishment deny this request if they have tofu on their menu. I didn't want to be a pest nor create and uncomfortable moment so I just ordered the Teriyaki Tofu as she suggested but knew that thus request was easy peasy.... Besides that, the food was tasty and the restaurant was quite nice especially for something that is right off the freeway. It is highly unlikely that I will dine her again but that's just due to location but Ru Yi seems to offer a nice selection of Asian cuisine including an extensive sushi menu. Just don't ask for anything that is not printed "as is" on the menu!

Yelp
As I am coming from another state, this restaurant is on of my choices for lunch or dinner. I would stay this restaurant is not the best Asian place in US but it is acceptable. Good customer service! I would recommend Thai Curry if you like spicy.
google avatar

Donna A.

Yelp
Amazing!!! From the service to the presentation of my Sushi to the freshness of the food. This place was the best place we had eaten on this trip. Would highly recommend, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
Good mix of Japanese and Chinese Cuisine. Made to order meals. My group of six tried several. It was a little hard to understand our server but I was pleased with my General Tso's meal. I sampled the bourbon chicken and would highly recommend that meal. We also tried the California rolls and the sushi sampler with only accolades for each. Not really a fine dining but the meals are better than the typical fast food trend.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Just had some awesome General Tso's Chicken and was very impressed. Definitely not what I was expecting though - it was chicken with some broccoli, was expecting red peppers and onions with my chicken but I might not have read the full description. There wasn't much broccoli but a huge amount of chicken. Combined with the rice, it was more than enough for one adult male in one sitting! Definitely will come back for this dish - it might take me a bit to venture away from it!
google avatar

Andi W.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant based on a myriad of reviews and were not disappointed! We ordered Miso Soup, the Red Dragon Roll, and two Volcano Rolls. The service was quick (there weren't many people in the restaurant, so that did make a difference. As we finished up, the manager (?) came over to ask how things were. He ended up staying for about five minutes to give us ideas of specials and other foods he thinks we should try. We walked away with full bellies and a takeout menu. We recommend this place to slanyone looking for good food and good service.
google avatar

Yelp
We were in Columbus for a two day get away and found this Japanese restaurant. We started off with the California egg roll which was really good. I had the General Tso Chicken and my wife had the sesame shrimp. We were not disappointed at all. The entrees were fresh and hot. If you are looking for something different while away from home or looking for a nice atmosphere this place is it. The only down side was our waiter, though good, made me feel a little rushed. The restaurant is clean as well as the restrooms. It is priced well and I felt the bill was reasonable.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
A one star is generous, WTH happened, this used to be a fabulous Resturant... now it is awful, we ordered 3 different meals and NONE of them were fit to eat!

Pat L.

Yelp
Pick up only during Covid. The food is outstanding and they have a great selection. The sushi is always perfect. I order through the app and make special requests on just about everything and my order is always spot on. My wife loves the shrimp fried rice and edamame. 4 stars instead of five because the ala-carte sushi is a bit pricey.
google avatar

Priya S.

Yelp
Horrible device and cold food. Taste of our regular dish changed. Tofu was like rubber.

Kelly C.

Yelp
Ru Yi is one of the best Asian fusion restaurant I have ever eaten the food was hot and a very good quality. The service was prompt and friendly. The Tom Yum soup was hot and very good I would definitely come back to Ru Yi and eat anytime.

Critic X.

Yelp
Very quiet, only three ither people for dinner. Sake came not warm but boiling in a metal flask and metal cup. So hot, it could not be poured. Sake normally comes in a porcelain flask and matching porcelain cup. Had to ask for utensils and a napkin. Egg roll was a bit small and miso soup, instead of a mostly clear broth as is usual, was dark brown. Sushi was ok but i've had better from supermarkets. As is common in many Asian restaurants, check was given without offering desert which i believe was on the menu. Missed opportunity. Only average at best, waiter asked if everything was ok several times so attentive but i believe his English was not great.
google avatar

Ishita S.

Yelp
The server and the manager here are sooo rude. They don't know how to behave. I asked for an extra plate and servers said "wait few seconds" and Just didn't come back. My friend's dish had stale chicken and smelled weird, when he told the manager, manager was asking others how their chicken was and then he told my friend that they used the same chicken. I have never seen such rude behavior. They food wasn't great and some dishes even smelled bad. We are never coming back.
google avatar

N1C0 S.

Yelp
Just be careful when you ask for chili oil / hot sauce. They charge you. It does not make sense. Condiment should be free. It is almost the same thing if an american restaurant charge you for tomato ketchup / pepper.. or japanese restaurant charge you for wasabi.
google avatar

Judy P.

Yelp
Love this place but left half of my order out of my carry out and I had to drive all the way back. Offered me a salad I said no thanks you need to take off my sushi roll. Wouldn't do it. Sorry been going there a while but I will not return. Lost my business and my friends. Cheapness cost your business.
google avatar

Angel A.

Yelp
We were really impressed with the service, prices and the food was really good! Hot & Sour soup, chicken with garlic sauce were delicious! My husband loved his as well. He got general tso chicken Can't wait to get it again!
google avatar

Kati H.

Yelp
Horrible service! Do not eat there if you have a shellfish allergy, I made it known when we ordered our carryout, and when we got home, there was Shrimp in my food. We called the manager right away and it seemed to pain him to apologize, nothing was offered to fix the issue, a supreme disappointment especially for what you pay!
google avatar

Isaiah C.

Yelp
After having tried every Sushi restaurant in Columbus, I have decided this is one of the best ones you can find in this region of Indiana. The staff is always friendly and they have very reasonable prices. Even if you don't like Sushi, Their other Asian dishes are delicious. Try the Bourbon Chicken, It is awesome!

Matthew R.

Yelp
I have been eating at Ru Yi for years and am a very big fan. They have great prices, great atmosphere, and a great menu. I have never been disappointed with any meal I have had there. That being said, it doesn't have the same glitz as Taku or the quirkyness of Hisui (not a bad thing, just an observation). The owner is always there and the wait staff are always very friendly. Ru Yi can't be beat if you're looking for a safe bet, pleasant experience.
google avatar

JAMES W.

Yelp
One of the nicest places to eat in Columbus, IN. If you like sushi and are in the Columbus area, this should definitely be a consideration. The place is clean with little decoration. Lights aren't overly bright. A simple, pleasant atmosphere. My only complaint is the servers were overly helpful. Three different servers stopped at our table to see if we were ready to order. We politely responded that we needed a little more time but it wasn't long before the next person would stop and ask. Many different people stopped to take our order, deliver drinks or food and just to check on us. So the service is great, maybe even too helpful. We had a variety of sushi as well as the curry chicken. Everything was fresh and tasted great. The curry chicken was a nice combination of vegetables and meat, not too heavy on either. The curry sauce tasted really good, a nice spicy kick. The sushi was great. I have to be in the mood for sushi, its not something I eat much of. My wife is close to being a connoisseur, she could probably eat nothing but. We both left full and pleased. Prices are what I'd expected, $10-20 a person. They have a variety of sushi, both in types and quantities...platters sized from a few varieties for a couple up to huge platters for parties. Overall, a nice place to get fresh Asian cuisine.
google avatar

Johnie M.

Yelp
Best Chinese and sushi in town. Service is great open all day no hurry pushing you out the door for 2.5 hours rest like rest of them. Cheap eating at lunch great prices can't be beat.

Yelp
Ate there first time today. Was delicious. Asked waiter for suggestion, made a great choice! My mom got Japanese, I got Thai (per his recommendation, it was new to me). Was wonderful. Had new and different choices then other places we have tried. All amazing and I highly recommend trying this place out! Glad we went.

Pamela B.

Yelp
Wonderful staff, accommodating, and prompt. The food was delicious and the kids liked the food. Going to be our new regular Asian food fix from now on! The lunch prices were awesome! The staff is sweet.
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
Have only done carryout from Ru Yi but it's always right, and always good. Sushi is fresh and nice looking, and the Thai Curry is outstanding! VERY happy to have another Asian alternative in Columbus. Prices are good and quality is good as well. Dishes have all been just right in terms of spiciness and we usually ask for more spice, which they are happy to accommodate. Looking forward to a chance to go and have a nice meal in house and really get into that Sushi Bar.
google avatar

Susana D.

Yelp
Packed 'em in on a Friday evening for dependable Chinese fare. Hefty portions of the usual suspects prepared with care. Pleasant atmosphere.

Patricia K.

Yelp
Normally we love this place. Have gone here many times and the food was really good. But this time we picked up my usual chicken curry, and it was awful. I'm not sure what change they've made, but it didn't even taste like curry, it was very perfumey. So disapointed. Hoping they go back to their original recipe.
