We came to Rubens twice in two days, and the difference between the food and the hospitality was genuinely disappointing.
Night one: We walked in without a reservation and were turned away with a very blunt “no reservation, bye-bye.” Fine, rules are rules. So we made a reservation and came back the next day expecting a nicer experience.
The setting downstairs is actually pleasant: clean, cozy, and with real potential for a wine-cellar vibe. The food was good (not exceptional, but definitely enjoyable), and that’s why I’m giving 4 stars for food.
But the service was the problem, and it wasn’t a small one.
Our waiter was cold, unfriendly, and made us feel like we were bothering him the entire time. Menus were basically dropped on the table, communication was minimal, and the overall tone was “rush through this” instead of “welcome, enjoy your evening.” It’s a shame, because the place could feel warm and charming, but the service drains all of that out of the experience.
The worst moment was at the end: I ordered an Americano and received an espresso. When I pointed it out, the waiter insisted it was an Americano because he had “already added water,” even though it clearly wasn’t. No apology, just an argument and attitude.
We spent around €240 for four people, which is a pretty decent bill. I chose not to tip because the service didn’t earn it. After that, the mood at the door became noticeably colder, and when I gave feedback, “your waiter is the reason this experience went wrong”, the response was basically: we disagree, bye. No interest in hearing it, no professionalism, just dismissal.
Ok food, but the service is so bad I wouldn’t recommend this place unless you’re comfortable being treated like an inconvenience.
