Just saw Bonnie & Clyde and it was incredible! Wonderful singers, actors, lighting, etc. Was totally immersed in the production. Congratulations to cast and crew for a fully enjoyable performance of the BEST. Thank you Rubicon for your presence here in Ventura.

Jason “Argo” Adcock

Google
Their auditorium is a very small one but the staff turns that to their advantage making best use of the space to stage a show with an intimate atmosphere. I felt like I was right up on stage with the actors. I could tell that the entire cast and crew had such a passion for their show. It's really nice to see a live performance and feel the energy between the actors and the audience. You owe it to yourself to find the time to attend a live show! Also worth pointing out that the theater is just a few blocks from downtown puting it in easy walking distance of lots of great restaurants and bars where you can enjoy the nightlife after the show.

Google
Have enjoyed each performance I have seen at this historic little theater. A true community treasure!

I’m so excited to meet Lauren on Sunday ! This is a dream come true for me !

Google
We are season subscribers and proud to support this gem of local theater. We just attended Once! and it was fantastic. A great story and production with a cast of characters that keeps flowing and entertaining from start to finish.

Google
Because each production is an individual and would be according to the taste of the individual watching it I will talk about the facility. A theater is very nice and cozy, the seating is very comfortable, the sound quality is quite good. There are not really any seats that are particularly far away from the stage. The Productions are always good and the cast is always very professional. I've never seen a show there that I did not enjoy. I'm sure you will feel the same. Enjoy

Local repertory theater always has a place in my heart. The Rubicon makes performances special.

Google
I love this theater! We saw "In the Heights" yesterday and it was amazing. Terrific acting, singing, and dancing by everyone. The theater is small so there are no bad seats and sound quality is excellent. Staging and lights are professionally done. I found it as good as a Broadway show, honestly. If I lived here I'd buy package tickets for sure.

Yelp
I'm excited for the best night of my life ! It's going to be so much fun! Thanks again for making my wish come true

Yelp
GETTING HERE: Located in Downtown Ventura on Main Street. The cross street is North Laurel. It's across the street from the Circle K. REVIEW: Support local! Support the Arts! I am beyond devasted that I only just attend the Rubicon this year. I had the great pleasure of attending the show The "A" Train, and I could not have been more impressed! Truly. LINKS of importance: https://www.atraintheplay.com/ and https://www.rubicontheatre.org/events/a-train/. Please do give them a click to see the crucial details of this one-woman play. I won't give spoilers. although I am tempted to. :) Follow Anne and get on the mailing list for the show. You won't be sorry and hopefully she'll be back to the Rubicon. Also consider signing up for the email blast from the Rubicon so you can get the shows on your calendar. I know the Rubicon offers outstanding shows and performances, and now that I am hooked I will have more check-in's and pictures soon. They also offer special packages and education packages. The volunteers were beyond knowledgeable and were very happy to share the rich history of the Theater. 110% I recommend the Rubicon. Enjoy!

Yelp
Have left voice mails and through FB to see about accessible seating. No one has returned messages. Can only guess they either have no seats that meet our needs and they don't know how to tell us, or they don't care.

Yelp
the theater is cute and the summer youth program performance was great!!! there's a docent named Marcie who was transphobic, unprofessional, and from downstairs, I heard her in the theater speaking ill of audience members. the building is also NOT ADA compliant and the bathrooms are tiny and only accessible by stairs
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
Rubicon remains a cultural landmark for Ventura County. Excellent productions, wonderfully crewed and casted. The staff and volunteers are friendly and helpful. The theater itself offers comfortable seating and you can truly say -"not a bad seat in the house!". I have never regretted having season tickets and encourage anyone who enjoys live theater in an intimate setting to support the Rubicon.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at the Rubicon! It's an older building (used to be a church) that they converted into a theater, so it has tons of personality. The staff was so friendly, the show was wonderful, and they had a delicious BBQ truck and great band before the show. They even had a cute little after party downstairs with drinks and snacks. I have nothing but great things to say about this local theater. Definitely worth checking out!

Ernest C.

Yelp
Went to see Forever Motown at the Rubicon and it was great. All the songs were great and their performance was outstanding. would recommend highly if you can get in to see the show. Love all the Motown songs. Ernest & Margie Canning

Yelp
This is our favorite theater! We have been coming to see plays and musicals off and on for over 15 years, and now that we live in the area, we buy season tickets. Almost every show is 5 stars! Eisenhower was fantastic!( our most recent show). Please support local theater and come and see a show for a wonderful evening out!!

Yelp
How can anyone NOT include this treasure when recommending ANYwhere in Ventura to visit? True they are not performing in the theatre at this time, because of COVID requirements, but you can help them raise the funds needed to put in the infiltration system Equity demands so that this gorgeous theatre company can reopen in their home. They have been staging shows this summer, however, at the Villanova Preparatory School in Ojai, up the road, so you can still see their wonderful work. Once they're open, you TRULY NEED to experience the family/homey atmosphere and the HIGH, CALIBER/CUTTING EDGE quality of the shows done here. It really is second-to-none. DO NOT MISS THIS WHEN YOU GET THE CHANCE TO BE THERE!!!

Yelp
I actually haven't seen the show i want to see in June ,Ain't Misbehaving. I live in a over 55 community and inquired about group sales which is 12 or more. we would pay 64 dollars for a Sunday matinee instead of 69 dollars. Shame on you Rubicon for not caring about seniors. This is outrageous and a big fuck you to us post covid.

Yelp
What a mixed bag this place is. Bought a season subscription. Fully enjoyed "In the Heights". Then saw "The Realistic Joneses"...the worst theater experience we have ever had. Had we not been seated in the first few rows (and would have felt badly for the actors), we would have gotten up and left--it was that bad. Next on our subscription is "Dark Moon" which we are looking forward to. HOWEVER, they literally just called to let us know that they switched the show from 8 pm to 7 pm---our tickets are for TOMORROW! That is very inconsiderate and short notice---and with NO apology whatsoever, in fact, a bit of smugness. We'll have to cancel our dinner reservation which now impacts another business (to say nothing of our personal schedule, our commute, getting out of work to get there, etc). Not likely to sign up for a second season. Disappointing.

Yelp
We have had season tickets for the last five years, and have enjoyed every performance. An amazing professional local theater with talent from film, television and Broadway providing first rate performances. Small venue with good seats, cookies and beverages available during intermission. 'Little Miss Scrooge' was a highlight last year, and is being offered again this holiday season. Definitely worth seeing.
google avatar

Jack F.

Yelp
We've walked & driven by this playhouse many times, but other than a few positive Yelp reviews, had little idea of the caliber of productions or just how cozy the venue was until tonight. Tonight we saw the play "Moonlight and Magnolias", a four-actor play about a complete script re-write of the classic movie "Gone With The Wind" to avert disaster for the movie studio. It was incredibly well-acted, professional, and funny. If you love all-things "Gone With The Wind" like my wife does, it plays through September 18th.
google avatar

Citee M.

Yelp
This is a great venue with friendly, helpful staff. Four stars because the bathrooms are downstairs & can only be accessed from one side of the stage (on one side, the stage is along the wall).

Yelp
2/23/17 One stop at Ventura's Rubicon theater this season and you can skip your next Blues Festival plans. You will have already seen the best! When Miche Braden and her in-tempo trio take the stage for their extraordinary adult presentation of The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith our laid back beach community is brought to life. Production details are rich and real to the 1920s genre. Braden's singing, dancing and pathos are not to be missed. Musicians; Hankings (Bass), Gibbs (piano) and especially Nelson (saxophone/clarinet) don't miss a beat, a bump or an opportunity to grind it out, Baby. Hightail it to Main Street and get in step. http://www.rubicontheatre.org/ The Perez Sis'tas in Oxnard

Yelp
I've seen a few plays here.....very professional and well done theatre! Just saw A Christmas Carol and wasn't disappointed, I really enjoyed the interpretation and use of a smaller stage....bravo!!
google avatar

Ivan H.

Yelp
We saw A Christmas Carol. We have seen many versions on stage and this was one of the better directed and acted. There was very clever use of the stage and props and a well thought out combination of narration and acting which allowed more of the original novel to be presented in an effective manner. The quality of the acting was quite good. The theater was small and intimate. This was our first time there as we live an hour away, but we will certainly be back.

Yelp
We are lucky to have the Rubicon Theater Company in our community. I have seen many shows here over the years. Recently I saw Last Train to Nibroc, and it was absolutely amazing! Definitely one of the best experiences I've had in a theater. I'm going to make the effort to see every show they put on. Bravo!

Yelp
The Rubicon Theater continues to wow me. This small Equity playhouse in the city of Ventura has productions that rival L A and New York. Yesterday I saw "Love, Loss, and What I Wore", and it seemed to touch every woman in the house. There was much laughter and a few tears, but a thoroughly enjoyable hour and a half. If you can possibly see this show, go. Now.
google avatar

Miss P.

Yelp
The Christmas play was wonderful! The actors were great...and the story was played to perfection....this is why I gave it "5" stars....truly deserved! (We have seen this specific play numerous times at various theaters...and Ventura was equal to much bigger and well known). The issue we had was with patrons both adjacent to our seats (front row). They were apparently playing some sort of a game (they were adults, 30'ish). Every time they opened up their cell...BRIGHT lights. I finally cleared my throat and looked at them... then they tried to cover the cell, but continued to play. Patrons behind even made a soft comment. Still every time the cell was opened...BRIGHT lights!. Very distracting, and rude! Please not only ask patrons to turn off the noise of cells...but emphasize not use them.at all! (the light is distracting). We have seen theater staff approach patrons about this distraction and if continued the patron was removed! We are sure the actors noticed...sorry! Thanks for a wonderful christmas experience!

Yelp
A nicely run professional theatre in Ventura, we watched Gem of the Ocean here and it was a delightful cast and poignant play. The seats are pretty good all around, it's a small and intimate theater. The theater itself is a historical site and get really good talent performing here that many will recognize from films, television, and Broadway. The cookie and water offered to us at this particular performance was an additional bonus.

Yelp
My review is colored by the fact that I would prefer acting to singing, and plot to chaos, so when I went to see "It's Only Life," I didn't realize what it would be like. Not my personal favorite, but then this is review is about the theater, not that specific production. Be sure to check out a variety of productions here. I understand from the friend I went with, as well as others that the Rubicon is first rate, and the acting on the whole quite good. The actors in the production I saw had lyrical voices, and the staging was interesting. 2008 marks their 10th anniversary season, so they must be doing something right, but don't expect bargain basement pricing, just because it is in Ventura. The theater offers acting classes for adults and kids, and the schedule is on the website. It is an Actors Equity Association, so most roles are filled by union actors. They also have a summer youth camp, and have started an International Theatre Festival. In 2008, the artistic director for that event was Linda Purl. I

Deborah S.

Yelp
Tonight's performance of South Pacific was outstanding. We've seen this production in cities larger than Ventura, however the vocal/acting talent along with creative set design for this intimate theater all made for a stand-out experience! We will certainly be back in 2019.

Virginia M.

Yelp
forever motown...wow that was amazing show.the performers were all extremely wonderful! ventura county needs more of that type of entertainment.! everyone who also worked that program were personable and helpful. thank you rubicon!

Yelp
I came here Thursday night for a Christmas play, nice theatre friendly staff clean place and great actors snacks are available at the entrance. The only down side is parking we parked a block away the whole area by the theatre was packed!

Yelp
Such a great theater! Every seat wonderful, See Rock City cast, sets, everything awesome. The neighborhood is sweet as well, nice to stroll thru afterwards. Worth the drive from Long Beach, though be advised to expect traffic on the way.

B F.

Yelp
Broadway quality theatre right in my own backyard. Grew up in NJ/ NY. Used to see Broadway shows with great frequency for many years. Rubicon is in the same league in every way.
google avatar

Tamra K.

Yelp
Fantastic Theater In Ventura, Ca. We saw See Rock City and it was excellent. We had balcony seats which were still great seats. Smaller venue and I hear it compares to the big guys. Probably not a bad seat in the house. Beautiful and historic. Pillows!! Comfy. Great set, nice crew. Parking is on the street. Looking forward to seeing more here.
google avatar

Jenn G.

Yelp
I came here to watch 'You Can't Take It With You' and enjoyed the performance. I sat all the way in the front, stage right, and liked how small and intimate the theatre was. There are few bad seats inside and because of the size, sound carries well throughout. They have a "$30 under 30" deal where you subscribe to a package of 5 or more shows for $30 per show if you are under 30 y/o.
google avatar

dave g.

Yelp
Great independent/ professional theater in Ventura. National-level production ranks up there with all the big theaters in LA. Go there. It's a gem.
google avatar

Pamela H.

Yelp
Just saw the opening night of Last a Train to Nibroc. It was one of the best theatrical experiences my friends and I have had in years! The writing was wonderful--witty, funny, touching. The two young actors were superb. The director, costuming -- everything was great. The Rubicon Theater is such a gem of a small intimate theater. This one is worth seeing whether you live in Ventura or want an out of town experience. It will be playing until May 10th.

Yelp
If you can get tickets to, "My Fair Lady," please get them and enjoy this wonderful production. I have seen "MFL" several times, in Washington, D.C. and in Boston, and think that the quality of this production exceeded all the others. I am amazed at what this theater company can do on a small stage. The production was, in my opinion, flawless.

Lsue K.

Yelp
This is a GREAT theater company!! If you live in the area, and haven't been to see a play there, shame on you!! The acting, directing and staging are superb. They have a beautiful converted church, with very comfortable seating. No matter where you sit, you can see and hear everything!! If you live in LA, and can't stand the thought of driving "all the way to Ventura", well, it only takes an hour (if you don't try it at 5 pm on a Friday) :), and hell, it takes that long to get downtown to The Taper, or Disney Hall! ...and ps...if you think a relatively small theater can't do a "large" piece, with a big cast, then you need to go see their production of MY FAIR LADY. ( I think it goes to mid-Nov.) Enough said. Get your "bloomin' arse" to Rubicon!!! Support the ARTS!!
google avatar

Leanna F.

Yelp
Love the Rubicon!! Danielle White does wonderful work with Wigs, Hair, and Make Up! The Actors are always top notch! Love the Arts in Ventura!
google avatar

Linda C.

Yelp
Saw the latest at the Rubicon, "2 Pianos 4 Hands" - what an amazing performance and an original script. Not fair that two men are so overly endowed with talent!! Their ability to banter and blend both with words and music held me in rapt attention. The grand finale was a complicated and intense piano duet that was so musically entrancing that it brought tears to my eyes. They deserved the standing ovation they got and more! Thank you Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblatt!
google avatar

Debbie B.

Yelp
I have been fortunate too see several productions at The Rubicon. I recently saw Master Harold and the Boys. I was moved to tears; it will be a theatrical experience I will never forget. It moved along so gently until it powerfully and swiftly shook me to my core. I was swept away by the cast that included Anthony J. Haney as Sam, Chris Erric Maddox as Willie, and Daniel Stewart as Hally. The artistic creativity and risks taken by the leadership of The Rubicon should be applauded. This theater is a destination must!
google avatar

CE B.

Yelp
I saw a funny play here called "Noises Off". Not knowing how tiny the theater was, front row seats seemed pretty cool. Yikes! Not the best play to see up close, right under the actors' noses...literally. A couple times the actor's split flew my way. Duck! My advice is to get the seats upstairs.

Ray K.

Yelp
Just saw "extras" last night at the Rubicon. We left at the intermission as did over half of the audience. It was the worst show we have ever seen at the Rubicon. We try to support the arts in Ventura, but with shows like this I can see why the Rubicon is struggling to survive. I won't ask for a refund, because I want to see the theatre survive. Sadly, I don't think anyone working there had a clue how disappointed the audience was with the show.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Definitely an older crowd...not somewhere I would go on date night but may recommend to my grandparents. I actually created this account because i'm disappointed in the lack of small theatre options in Ventura for people not in their 60's and older.

Michael M.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and catch Jennier Leigh Warren's show! She's an amazing talent that transports you back in time with her voice and stories of some of the greatest singers. This is an intimate performance that truly highlights Jennifer's take on some classics. The accompaniment on the piano is also stellar! Thank you Jennifer & Gerry for sharing your immense talent with us!!!

Ella M.

Yelp
Last weekend I saw a performance of the world premiere musical Daddy Long Legs, and I was impressed. I see a lot of good theatre and this show took the cake for the year. The two performers carried the story effortlessly and literally sang their way into my hearts. This sounds cliche but I have not been able to stop singing snatches of songs. It was charming and delightful and I've half a mind to follow it North to Palo Alto Theatre Works. Thank you, Rubicon, for putting on a show like this!

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Ventura's cultural crowning jewel. I've been a subscriber for many years. This little theater rivals any big city theater, including New York. The sets, acting and directing are first rate. Just saw tonight's performance of "Collected Stories" . Don't miss it.

J S.

Yelp
Well organized and great performances. The theater is small which means every seat is a good seat. We cried at Steel Magnolias and laughed out loud at The Mystery of Irma Vep - something for everyone!
