Rubies on Five Points

Tuesday night is BYOR bring your own record. Awesome little upstairs bar. With a cool and fun bartender. Well definitely be back. Tamales at the bar or tacos downstairs can't go wrong.

Rating is for what it is: A 1,000% 5-star ghetto-fabulous dive bar - the best I've seen in the area - perfectly right on point. And not cliche in concept - they literally have the cheapest drinks and shots, and $4 tamales - I had 3! And or the low price of $12, I may add. Tamales were so surprisingly legit.

Beef quesadilla and and old fashion (dont judge me). Everything about this place is great. I got my drink and food in a flash.

I'm actually posting a review on Lady Bird Tacos... If you all don't know, it's a new taco cart the owner has set up in from of Rubies, and they are open during lunch hours (until 3pm I believe). Highly recommend the Al Pastor! Real chunks of pineapple... and the spicy salsa has delicious depth of flavor. Use the QR code in the pictures to order. :) Sorry, probably should have posted a picture of the tacos... but I ate them all.

Came at 12:40am. They claimed to close at 2am. Do not walk here if you expect to get drinks past midnight. Charged us $6 for a hot beer. Never again . I don’t recommend to any one looking for drinks late night in Durham.

Me and my wife go here frequently. Love the vibes and the bartenders are top notch. Been sleeping on the tamales. Finally tried them they are Stars as well

To whom it may concern, I recently visited your bar and Alex was the best bartender/overall general person that I have ever met. No seriously. Meeting Alex was like walking through the rain and then suddenly stumbling into an iridescent ray of sunlight. Meeting Alex was like shivering in the cold and someone offers you a jacket. Not just a jacket, but a beautiful vintage Italian lambskin jacket that not only keeps you warm but makes you feel beautiful and then they tell you that also you can keep it. Meeting Alex was like walking into Narnia through the bleak closet during WWII but without the back snow witch stuff. Anyways you should cherish him with all your heart and never let him go. I love him with all my heart and would maybe die for him? Is that weird. Not a bad bar for a sweet little upstairs dive. You walk up from the street, and there are basically two rooms at the top of the stairs. To the left, there's a large open room with 4-5 tables around the edges. A mirrored ball was slowly spinning over an idle DJ setup on the street side wall. There's a fireplace and a dartboard beside it. We'll talk about that later. To the right from the landing is a smaller room with an 8-seat bar on one side and 3-4 three-top tables opposite. True to the name, most of the lighting is in the red end of the spectrum. I stopped in with a friend after a large gathering just to wind down. We got a drink and sat at the bar talking with the bartender and a few other patrons. Alex was busy pouring up drinks, and most of the patrons were couples, so we got a refill and threw some darts and chatted in the quiet of the dance floor in the other room. Really nice darts. Not much for a board or a place to score games. But we were just tossing and talking. This was a Monday night, so many of the larger venues were closed. It was good to have a place away from the street, but still easy walking from elsewhere in the 5-points area.

Had a fun time. Drank tequila slushies while bopping around to 80s and 90s karaoke music! Durham is talented!

The pictures do not do this place justice at all!! Amazing live band, great service, and a very accepting atmosphere. Drink were super affordable(3 drinks and great tip for $23) and attracted a great crowd of people. Favorite bar I've found in Durham by far!

We had a spontaneous night out on Thursday last week. After dinner and a few cocktails we thought it was a good idea to grab another round somewhere else. We didn't really have a plan in mind, but started walking regardless. At five points, we happened to notice good beats vibrating down the stairwell with an open door leading up to the source. We had no idea what to expect as we climbed up the stairs, following the music and flashy lights, but we were pleasantly surprised when it happened to be one of Durham's newest bars! Rubies had only been open one week at that time, yet there was still a decent stream of people at the bar and seated in the cozy booths. There was a DJ, fun lights, and retro decor. We were all feeling the vibe. There is a full well bar, plus beer (but not sure about wine). The bartender was welcoming and very swift. I am excited to return to Rubies to see how it matures. It was pretty laid back during our visit, which I actually really appreciated because I could actually have a conversation with the company I was with. I would love to see the intimate, cozy, yet casual atmosphere remain even beyond COVID-19, but time will tell!

One Wednesday evening, my friend and I left Bull McCabe's in search of one more drink to top off the night. I walked by Rubie's and saw the red lights upstairs. I was immediately intrigued and hit the Google to find out what was going on. I read a positive review that ushered my friend and I into the establishment. As you walk up the stairs, the steps illuminate in such a welcoming way, and I immediately knew I was in for a good time. The ambiance was delightful as my friend and I chatted over drinks. The clientele gathered, and the atmosphere changed from a quaint speakeasy into a dream destination. The music was bumping, the drinks were flowing, the people were delightful, and the room was filled with love. All walks of life were in the room for just one reason: a good time. I truly cannot recommend Rubie's enough. There is something here for everyone. Needless to say, the "one more beer" at 9:30pm quickly turned into 1:30am "oh shit, I have to be at work in a few hours." My only regret is that they have only been open for a little while and I am soon to be moving out of the area. Rubie's will forever hold a special place in my heart and I hope she does the same for you. Amazing bartenders, amazing vibes, 10 outta 10 would highly recommend to all of my close friends. Pro tip: check out the bathroom near the stairs, the selfies in that mirror are amazing!!
