Where to Savor New Orleans’s Best Shrimp and Grits - Eater New Orleans

"With 11 locations from the French Quarter to the Marigny, Orange Beach and Pensacola, Ruby Slipper does breakfast right and has the lines to prove it. Slurp an excellent Bloody Mary and tuck into the Slipper’s version of shrimp and grits swimming in a beer and rosemary butter sauce over creamy stone ground grits, a biscuit on the side. The grits are so good you might need more, this time with thin fried catfish as a co-star." - Beth D'Addono

This is a New Orleans based chain that has some of the best biscuits I’ve ever tasted. The bacon appetizer and loaded tots were delicious. The entrees were also very good. I would highly recommend checking out this location and any other in the area.

Google
My Megas was delicious but it is a tad spicy, I like spicy but my drink became completely empty as was my daughter's and they were never refilled and we waited forever for someone to refill, finally after 15 minutes I finally was able to ask someone for a refill and by then my food was cold. My daughter didn't like the gravy and biscuits, I tried it and they were okay to me just different but the 12 year old didn't like. My husband liked the 3 little pigs omelet. It wasn't super busy and at least 4 servers and only half the tables or less were full. It was also freezing in the restaurant and it has a terrible echo so its really loud in there and hard to talk to the others at the table. Prices were reasonable. Even with my poor service experience I would try again. My husband still gave a good tip but I would not have if I had been paying. Our food came quickly but it took forever to take our order and we never were checked on. The server working the bar was our server and she had no one at bar. It was 9 am. She was more worried about stocking the bar. A guy was there with a shirt that said BOSS on the back of his shirt. He never came and checked on us either.

WOW, went here on a recommendation from a server at The Royal House and it didn't disappoint. First, its in an old bank building which is so cool. Must have 25 foot ceilings. The waiter was Outstanding, his name is Jack "Cracker Jack", he was so helpful and just makes you want to stay all day. The food, WOW. Soooo fresh and the flavors were authentic. It was a great breakfast. Could not ask for more. Definitely a must stop place. We are actually going back in a couple days...

The food here was so good we came back and ate here again trying something different! The French toast bites were my favorite but everything was so good. It was my first time trying fried green tomatoes and it was great! The hollandaise was delicious and the tacos were very flavorful. The staff were super friendly and attentive. Highly recommend!

Slip on this cozy shoe and take brunch to a magical place! The fare at the Ruby Slipper is the stuff of fantasies - and I highly recommend it. Combine multiple options from the “benne” menu of the eggs Benedict and feast on some fantastic choices (the Chicken St. Charles was the BOMB). Make sure you order the French Toast bites - these are delectable silvers, perfect for a group to share. The Florentine Omelette was beyond compare, and the vinaigrette on the salad was sublime. As far as drinks go, it’s “The Big Easy,” y’all! The mimosas are amazing (try the flight if you’re feeling ambitious) but don’t skip the Breakfast Margarita. You’ll leave brunch WAY happier than your arrived… :-) Great service and a cute atmosphere to boot. Put it on your list!

Google
Tony this one’s for you. This place is just fantastic. Good vibes, friendly staff. Tony served us at the bar and he’s just as cool as a winter breeze and knows what he’s doing with these amazing drinks. That Irish coffee is AMAZING. I had the southern BLT, chicken and French toasts bites and season blue berry lemon beignets. Wow. I wish I lived in New Orleans. Go here. Do it.

Google
Very extensive menu at this large and airy corner cafe. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a cold beverage, the smashed burger and a peacemaker. Delicious. This place seems to be popular with the locals and I can see why.

Google
Absolutely phenomenal experience at Ruby Slipper! From the moment we sat down, we knew we were in for a treat—but Tony, the bartender, took it to the next level. His exceptional service, spot-on recommendations, and friendly, welcoming personality made our visit unforgettable. The “trifecta” was simply astounding—each bite better than the last, with eggs poached to absolute perfection. My wife had the biscuits and gravy, and she couldn’t stop raving about how delicious and comforting they were. And the mimosas? Absolutely amazing! Perfectly balanced, refreshing, and the ideal complement to an already incredible meal. Huge shoutout to Tony for making our morning so special! Everything here was top-notch, and we enjoyed every single moment. If you’re in town, do yourself a favor and stop by Ruby Slipper—you won’t regret it!

Yelp
Bright, fun atmosphere. Immediately upon waking in I felt a happiness from the decor and the welcoming. Our waitress, I think her name was Michelle, was very friendly. The food was AMAZING. My shrimp and grits were fresh and flavorful. The Benedict sandwiches were delicious and all of the sweets were great. Of course, we had to have beignets while in town and these were wonderful. As much as we tried to finish it all, we ended up with leftovers. We had some pancakes, some beignets and a biscuits. Even though we had a day of walking in the heat ahead of us we took them to go. They were still delicious the next day!! That tells you something. The drinks were tasty, too! The Bloody Mary was especially unique because it had a a distinct bacon infusion flavor. Very tasty! I'm glad we gave it a go and I recommend it for sure.

Yelp
This is a must stop. There are two but this one in Marigny is fantastic. At first, we thought it was closed because the door was a tad bit tough, as we didn't want to fling the door open. Q came running over to assist we finally gave the door a good push. He welcomed us with a friendly smile and introduction. Our party of 5 was sat and Veronica did a fabulous job. Friendly, knowledgeable, and even gave us recommendations for crawfish boil. Our drinks were filled, food was perfect (compliments to the chef as well). We will be back.

Yelp
We are here on vacation. 5 people with one with food intolerance. This has been the best experience of the week! When we walked in we were greeted by Q. He had pride in his employer and it showed. He set the stage for a great meal. The Veronica came in as our waitress. She ensured our meal was arcuate, delicious and hot. At the end, they both came over and talked to us about food and history. Just all around a great experience!
google avatar

Yelp
As I'm writing this I'm shaking my head in disbelief... This has been the best place we've eaten at since we've landed. The moment we walked in,... We were warmly greeted, friendly chatted up while we waited for our table and had the most delicious breakfast. Service is amazing and the hospitality was top notch. Veronica was the best, most pleasant. Most beautiful individual I have ever met. We will be back!!!
google avatar

Kelly P.

Yelp
This place has become a staple for us on vacation here in New Orleans. The service is fantastic. Veronica is such a sweetheart and the whole entire team is extremely friendly and welcoming. Not to mention... food is superb! Anything from biscuits and gravy to a veggie omelet is solid! Also the spiced vanilla latte is fantastic. All in all... this place is a 10/10 and definitely recommend coming here!!
google avatar

Felix P.

Yelp
Would normally be raving about the staff and the food etc. But for weeks now the espresso machine has been "broken"! And last year, the espresso machine was "broken" for weeks at a time! Now it's reached the point of ridiculousness! It's a breakfast place with a huge corporate budget! If you can make lattes or espresso at breakfast, maybe you need to be in a different line of work!!
google avatar

Yelp
The ambience here is casual. The food was generally good. I highly enjoyed the fried green tomatoes but wish they gave more in an order since they were really small. The breakfast tacos were in what appeared to be store bought flour tortilla (not great) so I ended up just eating the insides of the tacos. However, they were kind of bland and needed some seasoning. My friend who ordered the shrimp and grits enjoyed it thoroughly and my other friend said the fried chicken eggs benedict was lovely. The biscuits are fluffy and buttery so I highly recommend getting one to try. The amaretto iced coffee was a major favorite as was the blueberry lavender mimosa. The mimosa came in a full wine goblet rather than a more traditional champagne flute but not to worry because you can ask to take it to go if you can't finish it up there. This is a nice New Orleans chain where you can get a nice hearty brunch for a decent price.
google avatar

Britnee C.

Yelp
I am a sucker for eggs benedict so of course that's what I got. However, I have to say they were just okay. Kind of mid, really, but I do respect the fact that they have so many different kinds to choose from and you can mix and match when is something I wish more places would do. We started out with some drinks and my boyfriends amaretto coffee was divine. The show stealer is without a doubt the french toast bites. I don't even like french toast normally but these were so crispy and flavorful and I still dream about the praline sauce they come with. Our server Taranesha was so good to us and didn't let us feel neglected at all despite how busy the place was when we were there. To give anyone visiting a heads up, you do want to put your name on a waiting list through the website and don't forget to check in with the host when you get there.

Yelp
Super service and packed at 8am on a Wednesday for a reason. So many delicious options. We had the spring begnet with lemon curd and creme. Then we ordered the Benedict where you get to choose any 2 or 3?! We ordered fried chicken and bacon Benny. Soo good! Lovely service and cheerful upbeat decor!
google avatar

Isabella M.

Yelp
Food and service is always great and so are the mimosas! The candied bacon , the pancakes, shrimp and grits are some of my favorites!
google avatar

Yelp
Street parking, outside dining and a great staff. Everything and everyone was PERFECT. It's been awhile since I have given any establishment that type of love. But the Ruby Slipper Cafe was everything we needed and more! Cute and quaint. Small and cozy. What more can you ask for and it was only steps away from our Airbnb in the Marigny neighborhood. There was so many items that we wanted to try. We are actually considering returning in the morning for breakfast. Our server was Herman, lively and friendly and made me feel like a regular. A great place to eat, relax and feel like you are a regular (loved and appreciated)!
google avatar

Thomas T.

Yelp
The restaurant is so charming on the inside with a real New Orleans vibe. The staff is very attentive and were transparent with issues with staffing in the kitchen on the day of our visit. The wait was long, but it was so worth it. The Trifecta has eggs cochon, chicken St. Charles and Bayou shrimp, a good way to sampl each. The St. Charles was my favorite of the three. The portions are huge and very filling with the eggs cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Tony U.

Yelp
Pretty good place to grab a 10am breakfast in the middle of the week. More locals come here so there isn't the grifter vulture hovering vibe that you'll see in the noise infested French Quarter area. Service is polite, friendly and dependable. I had the shrimp grits and it was nearly perfect until I realized it didn't come with an egg. Would have been perfect with an over easy egg on top of it. Was still pretty good.. I also had their signature Bloody Mary. On a hot humid summer day here, it hit the spot. Interior is outdated orange but still quaint. I'd come here again with no worries.
google avatar

Michelle L.

Yelp
First meal here in New Orleans and it was delicious. I'd recommend this to anyone visiting. White chocolate pudding pancakes reminded me of a cinnamon role and were sweet and fluffy. Comes with syrup and bacon. The eggs cochon were recommended by our server and it was BOMB. Biscuit underneath, pulled pork, and poached eggs. Spinach was a nice touch for some greens. Service was so friendly, nice vibes, and welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Brunch spot. Very diverse menu. I had the seasonal Honey Ham Benedict special that was out of this world. The ham was so flavorful, it was crispy and sweet, but savory, hard to describe. It was so delicious. And the crispy onions on top, YUM. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, and I noticed how they all got along so well, and were in such good moods. That tells you a lot about the business when the employees are happy. Great location, outside seating and plenty of seating inside. Really cool eclectic atmosphere.
google avatar

Richard S.

Yelp
We love this breakfast place. Customer service is top notch. Food is delicious! Exactly what you are looking for in a brunch spot. Jessica was a great server! But the man here is Q, he is the ambassador for this restaurant! Get the biscuits and gravy!' Only reason not 5 star is sometimes it is a bit slow.
google avatar

Renee N.

Yelp
We tried two breakfast places and this was one was my favorite! Patricia was nothing short of amazing and her recommendations were spot on! It seems to get kind of busy but you can go online and add yourself to the waitlist. There was a bit of a wait on Saturday morning as it was St. Patrick's day weekend. Everything we ordered was superb and They have several locations in throughout the city. While it appears to be a chain, I have zero complaints. My preference is to try and find local establishments. You should definitely try this place out.
google avatar

Daichan S.

Yelp
This spot was on my list of places to visit while in New Orleans. I didn't know there were several locations. Luckily, we made it to this location and there wasn't a wait. This location is located in a residential area so you'd need to find street parking. This restaurant has a smaller, intimate setting with a bar conveniently located in the middle of the restaurant. We were seated right away and the waiter here was very friendly. He was sure to keep us laughing with his jokes and accommodate our needs. I decided to build my own omelet since none of the omelets had exactly what I needed. The omelet came with a giant biscuit and grits to die for! I don't believe I've ever had grits that good. Either the portions were too small or the food was just that good because I was able to finish my food (I never do this) and leave satisfied and full. They also have a variety of breakfast cocktails and coffees. I was feeling risky and ordered a boozy iced coffee. All in all, everything met my expectations and I Wouldn't mind returing.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
We really like this place. Consistent food, fun environment. I love their omelettes. Service is a little on the slower side but everything always comes out hot and yummy!

Heather V.

Yelp
The wait was over an hour, even in the wait list. Be sure to get yourself in the waitlist!!!! It was worth the wait. We got these great Bloody Mary's while we waited on the street. They had olives, lemon, lime, and Cajun green beans. You could even kick it up a notch with bacon. We had the shrimp Bennie, the pork Bennie and the tomato Bennie. Also the biscuits and gravy. I loved the shrimp. We sat at the bar, not by choice- but so glad we did. The servers at the bar were great. They made the meal. They were funny, sassy, and entertaining.
google avatar

Jamila C.

Yelp
I had a basic breakfast omelet with grits, sausage links, and a Peach Bellini (but what I really wanted was the Lavender Paloma). I settled on the Peach Bellini, because I felt like it was the civilized thing to do considering we were there for brunch and flying out shortly after. What I should have done was start with the Peach Bellini and then chase it with the Lavender Paloma. I will just have to return to Ruby Slipper Cafe on my next trip and make things right with myself (and NOLA). Everything I ordered was delicious. We came just before the rush but wasn't able to get our order in within enough time; therefore, we ended up waiting quite awhile for our food to hit the table. These are just some parting notes, place your food order right away and order yourself two drinks at a time : )
google avatar

Andrea Z.

Yelp
So many delicious options to pick from! Amani , our server is so friendly and down to earth! She's o nice, I want to put her in my pocket and take the trip with her. Also, Q, is so friendly and funny. He gave us a great recommendation along with Amani to get the morning margarita and man did it deliver! The food was fantastic! I had the OG Sammie and it was perfection!
google avatar

Rudy D.

Yelp
Originally passed this place a few days ago. Line was rather long so decided to dine at a place a block away and realized why there was no line! Went there early yesterday. Fortunately they got us in right away. Decided to get the Southern Breakfast with another biscuit and a side of gravy. Food came quick! Grits were really buttery and the biscuits were fantastic. The fried green tomato was good. Bacon was flaccid. Would definitely come back.
google avatar

Renea H.

Yelp
You can never go wrong with brunch at this location. The servers are always super friendly , and very attentive. The food never disappoints either! Our family like to come to this location from the Westbank every time family Is in town. Give it it try , you won't regret it.
google avatar

Nia E.

Yelp
The staff was very kind as I waited for the rest of my group to arrive. They prioritized first come first serve basis. Food was good, tasty, and flavorful. It was busy by lunch but very chill and relaxed atmosphere. Good place to bring family for a little brunch.
google avatar

Becca D.

Yelp
100% came for the mix and match bennies. I had planned out my day to find a place to grab lunch after getting a massage and heading back to my Airbnb to get ready for my cousin's wedding. This place popped up along my walking route and as soon as I saw the menu, there was absolutely no question where I was going lol. The only issue is - how can you decide on bennies?? There were SO many yummy sounding options! I was sitting up at the bar and the bartenders were so lively and helpful! I ended up getting the Chicken St Charles, and they told me about a special crabcake bennie they had so I did that one as well (since I was originally thinking the shrimp bennie). I also had the mimosas flowing of course lol. The bennies were very yummy, especially that crabcake! The place was hoppin and lively while I was there, def a great option for Saturday brunch!
google avatar

Melanie K.

Yelp
Wow. Delicious brunch food that's on the indulgent side. French toast bites were crispy with a delicious maple sauce. Cinnamon swirl pancakes were also delish. Bennies done really nicely. Big portions - come hungry or share. Best coffee I had in NOLA! Staff is fun and seems happy to be there. Was a 20 minute wait to get in on the weekend, but worth the wait!
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. With the specials and fresh ingredients it's always a good place for breakfast or brunch. You must give it a try
google avatar

Jim T.

Yelp
Fantastic food and service at the RS. When in New Orleans, get Cafe de Mondé out of the way then checkout this place. Excellent large biscuits. My friend got Chicken St Charles with shrimp. I got the Spanish omelet with shrimp. Tasty. The Casual atmosphere makes it a great place to spend the morning.
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp
Great brunch, breakfast! Their versions of eggs Benedict on their biscuits, daily baked in the premises, were delicious! Great hollandaise sauce. Crispy breakfast potatoes, good french toast, and avocado toast with salmon. Nice location, clean, and the service was very friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
I just added this place to the old bookmarks. Yeah, it's that good. At first, I wasn't truly impressed by the bartender, it took him a long time just to acknowledge us & he had a bit of a bland personality. I was a little worried but like normal I dove in cause they say the proof is in the pudding. Started off with some super friendly & energetic customer service from Teri. Definitely brings out the flavor and attitude of New Orleans. Very friendly and hospitable. She really impressed us with some super amazing customer service. We tried a couple of drinks and we all had different meals and everybody left with a full belly and super satisfied. Definitely worth trying this hot spot. Get in there for some great Louisiana hospitality & food!!
google avatar

Dee D.

Yelp
I've been to this location twice and they have yet to disappoint me! I usually sit at the bar and Tony the wonderful bartender has done a magnificent job of taking care of me. The staff is great, the atmosphere is warm & welcoming, and the food is divine. If you're in town definitely give them a try!
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
We had such an amazing experience here today - our waitress Michelle was the most lovely and attentive person and the food was so freaking good. We had the eggs Benedict trifecta and it was all delish, especially the fried chicken.
google avatar

Danace Y.

Yelp
Great southern brunch. Great value for the food and the size of the entrees. It is by reservation only so make sure to reserve. They have a waitlist but it does take time. We waited for at least 30 more minutes after the initial 20 minutes we were told our table is ready. Make sure to hydrate and you can buy drinks at the bar while you are waiting for your table or stand in the shade across the street. The flights are very affordable and it's nice to try different drinks without buying a regular size drinks. We enjoy everything we ordered and the favorite is the watermelon drink.
google avatar

The M.

Yelp
They got rid of the salmon benny! NOOOOOOO! No need to change things. Still love this place!!
google avatar

Saith B.

Yelp
Talk about what a place to visit , everything was so rich in flavor and surprisingly affordable. The Customer service was amazing felt like i knew everyone . 5/5 service !!! really did enjoy the Chicken St. Charles Benedict. it was the best thing I have ever tasted

Janine S.

Yelp
At first, when I walked in I thought," darn, it is so loud in here". The acoustics were bad. As soon as I was seated at the bar(I was traveling solo) I was greeted by one of the staff members with the warmest most genuine smile. He made the best recommendation. The Chicken St. Charles was by far the most delicious thing I've eaten in forever!! Thanks Q! I will definitely go back whenever I am in New Orleans again!

Pete B.

Yelp
The service, food, and atmosphere are what make this a great place to enjoy brunch. Tony also makes the best bloody mary in New Orleans!

Matt J.

Yelp
Every BLT should have fried green tomatoes. Staff was all in a good mood and it was a great way to start our morning in New Orleans.
google avatar

david w.

Yelp
Amazing breakfast great way to start the day. Great little neighborhood spot . Staff is on point

Audrey M.

Yelp
Nice place for a NOLA breakfast. Service was good and wait staff were very friendly. Try the beignets...they are bite size and shareable. The breakfast tacos were also really delicious.
google avatar

Iesha W.

Yelp
So, the food was so good on Friday that we came back on Saturday! I was so excited that I didn't even get any pictures of the food. Of course, I ordered another Gingerbread Latte. It was a little different this time, but still delicious. This time I had the SOUTHERN BREAKFAST with Two egg whites, stone-ground grits, applewood-smoked bacon, fried green tomato, and a buttermilk biscuit. I also had a side order (1) of the PEACHES & CREAM PANCAKES (Filled with caramelized peach compote, topped with whiskey cream sauce, fresh peaches, and whipped cream). We tried to purchase one of their shirts, but they ran out of the red "Brunch people..." one. Run don't walk in! My next time in New Orleans will definitely start with a stop at the Ruby Slipper!
google avatar

Kameya P.

Yelp
Recommended MUST TRY! And it definitely is a MUST TRY! Our group of 4 thoroughly enjoyed our meals! Our waiter Imani was delightful and energetic! No fault on our server we do have one complaint and that was we waited a long while for our food to come out. Other than that our food was delicious. I chose the shrimp and grits. And I was blown away. I wish I would've came sooner so I could've gone move than once. Until next time!
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
So I'm very late reviewing this but my husband and I loved coming here for breakfast. As a matter of fact, we came here twice on our vacation! Everybody was so nice and the food was amazing. It was busy at times but we didn't have to wait that long and it never got too noisy.
google avatar

Erin H.

Yelp
I had my first Ruby Slipper Bloody Mary sixish years ago and every time I have had a Bloody Mary since I've been disappointed that it isn't as good. So on my latest visit I was looking forward to having my favorite Bloody Mary at this new location -- and it didn't disappoint. And neither did the rest of the menu. I introduced my BFF and sister in law to Ruby Slipper and got them hooked, too. The menu is full of variety and flavors and the staff are the friendliest, most helpful and funny people around. The wait is well worth it, but I recommend you reserve a table ahead, especially on the weekend. They have some outdoor tables, but not a lot, and limited seating at the bar. The eggs cochon are one of my favorites -- pork, biscuits, and a heavenly hollandaise sauce. It's filling and rich and perfect for brunch. We also shared the French toast bites and candied bacon -- divine and delicious. The rest of the table had a Florentine egg white omelette and classic biscuits and gravy. We were all members of the clean plate club and everyone agreed to return the following day for brunch. On all three visits our servers were excellent -- friendly, fast, and made excellent recommendations. We were never left wanting and appreciated seeing all the smiling faces, even when the place was slammed with tables. I really cannot recommend this place enough. I've been impressed with every location (Canal Street, Magazine Street, and now this one) over the years -- you just can't go wrong.
google avatar

Lexi B.

Yelp
Incredible brunch experience & amazing service by Michelle! We loved the Gulf Shrimp Omlette. The entire staff was so nice & we enjoyed our experience so much that we returned here for brunch the next day. Highly recommend this spot!
google avatar

Aha G.

Yelp
Great service, all the servers were super nice and employees checked in with us frequently. The food...I could truly eat here every single day. It's filling, and very reasonably priced for the amount and quality. The split plate Benedict option is awesome because it was impossible to choose between all of the amazing options. French toast bites were soooo crispy and perfectly sweet. Coffee beverages are a win, hoping to try a cocktail next time. Just an all around great brunch spot!
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
We received terrible food and service today for brunch. Our food was cold coming out and flavorless. Our waitress could not have been ruder the entire meal. She made passive aggressive remarks and yelled at us throughout the meal. It was unbelievable and I will never be back to this location.
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
My daughter and I came here for a quick breakfast before leaving town. We were seated promptly but then waited for a little while before we were able to order. In fact in the time it took the waitress to come take our order, she had actually gone to other tables and taken their orders first, so I was a little nervous that our wait time would end up being much longer than expected. As it turned out, food came out relatively fast so it was not too long of a wait after all. I ordered a cup of hot coffee and my daughter ordered a specialty coffee drink. We ordered one of the seasonal beignets, which had an almond, blueberry, and cream cheese topping. For $7, we were a little disappointed when the beignets came. While there were four beignets, they were all really small. Also, the beignets were much harder than expected, and were actually very difficult to chew. My daughter had a cheese omelette with potatoes, And I went with the peacemaker, choosing two of the benedicts from the list. I wanted the Eggs Cochon and the corned beef, but they were out of the corned beef so I ended up with the chicken Saint Charles instead. The benedicts were both delicious. Service could've been a little better, but it definitely could've been worse. I waited a long time while they made fresh coffee, both at the beginning and then again for a refill. In the end, it was fine.

Yelp
We'd enjoyed a meal at the Magazine location several years ago, but didn't realize their were other locations. Visited the Marigny location and had a wonderful lunch, including the best friend green tomatoes we've had in a long while. Our server, Tony, was attentive, friendly, and offered some great suggestions including the Lavender Paloma, which I would never have ordered on my own, but truly was delightful as he promised.
