New Orleans-Born Brunch Spot Ruby Sunshine Heads to Hillsboro Village | Eater Nashville

"In Hillsboro Village I learned they'll be setting up shop at 1800 21st Ave South in the former home of Provence Breads & Café; owned and operated by Ruby Slipper Restaurant Group, the spot will bring benedicts, bloody marys, and mimosas along with New Orleans–inspired twists on Southern brunch classics. The menu highlights include bacon praline pancakes, a Gulf shrimp omelette, and eggs Cochon, and spring specials listed online feature a Nashville hot catfish benedict, banana pudding French toast, and a GooGoo Cluster pancake—traditional pancakes stuffed with Nashville’s own GooGoo Cluster candy, then topped with chocolate ganache and toasted marshmallows. Once open “later this year,” the restaurant will provide indoor and outdoor seating for 174 guests and hours of Monday–Friday 7 a.m.–2 p.m. and Saturday–Sunday 7 a.m.–3 p.m.; Nashville will be the chain’s fourth Ruby Sunshine location after Birmingham, Knoxville, and Franklin (the group opened its first Tennessee location in Franklin in March)." - Delia Jo Ramsey

Shout out to Dee who was an outstanding waitress! She was very friendly and helpful with menu recommendations. The food was fresh and hot! Everyone love their meals. Green tomatoes are a MUST TRY! We ended up ordering two more of them lol. Great food and great experience!

I was in town for a football game and decided to try Ruby Sunshine — and I’m so glad I did! The food was fantastic. I ordered The Little Easy, which comes with eggs cooked to your preference, bacon, and a pancake — the perfect portion. I also tried the boozy iced coffee, and it was absolutely delicious. The service was excellent. Our server, Alyssa P, was incredible — attentive, friendly, and efficient. I also noticed how hard the entire team was working; even with the restaurant packed, everyone was hustling and keeping things moving. We waited about 45 minutes for a table, which wasn’t bad considering how busy it was. The atmosphere made up for it — the décor is charming, from the whisk-shaped light fixtures to the bacon-and-egg wallpaper in the bathroom. One small note: during our wait, we did notice a few empty tables that sat uncleared for quite a while, which might have contributed to the longer wait time. Overall, though, it was a great experience — delicious food, excellent service, and a fun, lively vibe. I’d definitely go back!

Google
I love their breakfast. The egg-white floretine omelette is delicious. Cheddar grits on the side makes it perfect. I've eaten at and enjoyed the RS in Chattanooga many times, and this one is equally enjoyable.

Google
Food was okay, I recommend but not as my first choice. I definitely had better food and service in this city elsewhere. Large menu, lots of options but the food took a while, waited close to an hour for food after ordering and dishes were simple for a breakfast spot. (Biscuit breakfast sandwich, tots, avocado toast, and candied bacon). The place was large with lots of seating, I sat at the counter so I was sat immediately and there was always counter seats available. Indoor and outdoor seating was also available. While I sat there for an hour, I didnt see food consistently being sent out, seemed to be a bit of a pacing problem as I was able to put my order in immediately. The staff was friendly, and the food was good, I probably won't return with the pacing I experienced.

Google
We are never disappointed here! Whether we order our usual favorites or try something new, the food is always delicious. We’ve visited this location and others, and the quality is consistently excellent. The service is top-notch, and we love that it’s dog-friendly — they even bring out water for our pups! The mimosa flight was fantastic, and the Bloody Mary was just as good. Everything here is simply so good! This is one of our favorite spots whenever we’re in town.

Google
- Admittedly, we first tried to go across the street but couldn’t wait for the line. So if you’re in the same predicament, fear not - you are not going to regret moving over one street for your brunch! The flavors here were southern and warming. The fall special chai benets were incredible! With a chai whipped cream so thick it was damn near cheesecake and fresh hot Bennetts, it was on season and indulgent. For breakfast I ordered the one tomato two tomato Benedict and WOW. For starters, I think green tomatoes or tomatillos are underused and adore how they were fried on this breakfast! The grilled red tomato kept the juiciness needed. The biscuit somehow didn’t become soaked and instead was a pillowy home for all the toppings! I’ve worked in brunch restaurants and had sadly served many below par Benedict’s during a Sunday brunch since it’s always a rush. Despite being the same type of busy Sunday, the eggs were poached perfectly and my plate was well stacked. I did add a spiced latte, which was not quite top tier espresso but did a good job and wasn’t overly sweet.

Google
The hot honey chicken on a biscuit is great. I opted for fruit instead of the potatoes. My son had the peacemaker (2 eggs benedict) and my friend had the southern breakfast (2 eggs, bacon, grits, and a biscuit). They said it was delicious. Service was very slow and it was very noisy. The prices were fairly reasonable.

Kim M.

Google
I looked forward to eating here, but was sadly disappointed with their biscuits and gravy. The gravy was tasty with the right amount of sausage and seasonings. The biscuits, which were hard and difficult to cut, definitely were not freshly made for lunch and tasted as though they lived in the warming drawer for several hours or overnight. I was hungry enough to saw through this signature dish, but definitely won’t order it again. The restaurant was unusually lightly attended with maybe one-tenth of the seats occupied so I requested one of the numerous open tables by the windows. The hostess agreed then sat us at one of her wait tables near the restaurant’s center with just a view of the windows.

Yelp
The food was bomb, the drinks were cute, and the prices were right ! Oh, and our server Alli was a DOLL !

Yelp
We had an amazing server/waitress. I have had amazing service there and never had to wait long for my food. The food is always delicious and they always get the orders correct. I would choose to eat here for breakfast and lunch again!! It's also very clean as well!

Mychal O.

Yelp
Food is very delicious. The Omelets are big enough for two people and the French toast are Amazing with the dipping sauce.
google avatar

Gabriella L.

Yelp
Amazing service and ambiance!! They were incredibly accommodating with our group of 6, and everyone said they enjoyed all their food a lot. The drinks were also very good, and there's a wide selection of options with seasonal varieties. I do recommend joining the Yelp waitlist ahead of time for fast/immediate seating, but for a Saturday morning, it didn't seem like anyone had a super long wait.

Yelp
My partner and I stopped by on a Sunday morning. Definitely get on the waitlist before heading over because even with it, we waited about 45 minutes to an hour. It's busy in there and the bar area looked cute. We ordered the mimosa flight; pineapple and watermelon were our favorites. The candied bacon was overly sweet and a little grainy. The Southern breakfast had dry potatoes but decent flavor, and the poached eggs on a biscuit with pork were just okay. We also had a side of pancakes that tasted more like cake and were a bit too sweet for me. Service was great, but overall the food felt pretty average for the long wait. If I weren't in a hurry and happened to be in the neighborhood, I'd give it another try because the French toast looked really good.

Yelp
I haven't always had the best experiences at ruby sunshine locations, but after attending an event here I was willing to give it another shot. Things seemed to be different and change implemented. Sadly, this was not the case. I actually just left this establishment. Upon entry the patio had maybe 4-5 tables that were occupied. On the inside there were quite a few empty tables, quite a few people waiting on food who seemed to be irritated by the wait based off overheard conversations, but we continued to wait at the hosts stand hoping to be greeted and seated. There was an employee talking to a couple as they were leaving who was visibly crying. She left the conversation, stood at the bar and started counting money. Still crying not sure what happened, but yeah. Still no communication with the numerous employees who walked past us several times. At this moment I was ready to go, but then we inquired about speaking with the manager. Manager comes out, whom I recognized from the event. We explained how we had been standing here for a while, but never addressed and it seems like everybody was in a panic and running around frantically. He proceeded to say that he had multiple people call out and they were short staffed. Very fair. I hear you sir. But communicating that with the guests you have standing in your doorway would be beneficial. We told him that effective and prompt communication about wait times or even being short staffed could prevent this. Before deciding to stay we asked how prompt the service would be considering what he disclosed. He stated they were looking at about 20 minute ticket times. We decided to stay and was sat a table close to the bar. A gentleman approached us with two waters and stated are yall ready. Mind you we just sat down. Hadn't had a chance to even look at the menu. We told him not yet. He proceeds with "well I was told to be prompt so I figured you were ready." *inserts passive aggressive body language* He goes by the name of Raleigh, Rolly or Riley. At this point I'm confused how a great conversation with the manager turned into a passive aggressive response from a server we never even communicated with in regards to this. As he walks away from our table he proceeds to approach the crowd of employees standing in the foyer area near the kitchen to mockingly tell them what he told us while inserting his *passive aggressive body language*. Of course, they laugh with him as if this is great practice and customer service. It continues when he walks inside the kitchen. Now, im assuming he's telling the same story because multiple employees start to look outside the window in our direction making this encounter very obvious what took place. In this moment I don't even want to eat here for the fear of what else could be next. We stopped one young lady with a blue shirt and short hair who was amongst those laughing and asked her to get, Ken, the manager for us. Ken comes out, and we explain the entire behavior since the conversation with him when entering. He stated I did tell him to be prompt but not be a ______. But again it was communicated with Ken that we weren't asking for prompt service, but prompt communication on if or when there was going to be a delay because of being short staffed. He claimed to have understood. I don't recall if an apology was actually granted. Nothing was offered to us. But we did end up leaving. If you have read this far, I do hope you have a better experience than I when trying this establishment.

Yelp
I've been here 2x this month. 1st time was exceptional. Staff was friendly and attentive. Food was delicious. Came back this week with a friend. They were pretty empty, and plenty of staff. But our waitress this time was not as attentive. Even though she was nice, she was slow forgot one of our items, and when we said something the wrong thing was brought to our table. We had to ask for things she kept forgetting to bring to the table. Ketchup, straws, etc. The food was still good, and I would probably go back to give them another try because of this. But if there was continued iffy service, then I'll try somewhere else.

Yelp
I still come here every few months and it's delicious! I haven't had a bad meal, whether it's egg, biscuits or pancakes. They have delicious coffee options as well! It can get busy on the weekends so definitely worth getting there before 9am. I love the outdoor patio! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Hailey A.

Yelp
If you're in Nashville you'll appreciate the free 1 hour parking lot behind the building! The servers and hosts were super friendly and helpful. I got the omelet with a biscuit and the biscuit comes with a honey cinnamon butter that is delicious. The butter has a nice subtle flavor if you aren't into sweet butters. The coffee is also surprisingly good and I'd go back just to get a coffee! It is also pet friendly on their outdoor patio if you need to grab food while with your pet (they even have water bowls)! Overall it's a great casual place to go with friends or alone since they have bar top seating.

Yelp
I'm not gonna lie I didn't love the food or the drinks. It's a nice little place in a busy area, but it also isn't opened too late so just judging it for brunch vibes but I don't think I'll be coming back. The food was pretty bland and I had to send my food back because it was pink catfish which according to google is bad. They said it was just the seasoning but they took it off the bill and I just didn't eat other than my friends leftovers. servers were super nice though so I will give them that and the biscuits were definitely a crowd pleaser.

Yelp
We came for the Yelp event and had a nice time . We had a nice selection of finger food that are offered in this establishment. From beignets to chicken and stuffed tots. All was great and enough to get your fill. The service from the staff was great for the amount of people that came . The decode inside is towards the modern side but very colorful and fits the building . The owner said a few nice words and Bailey did another awesome job. Looking forward to the next one .

Yelp
We went to Ruby Sunshine for brunch on Sunday and used the yelp waitlist feature - it was so helpful and we didn't have to wait too long when we arrived! Our waitress- Gaysha was SO awesome and funny, she really made the breakfast all that better! Would definitely visit another location in the future, the food was amazing! I've been missing NOLA food since I visited last year and this really hit the spot.

Yelp
Stopped in for brunch with amazing company. Breakfast was good...portion size was on the smaller side but good. Drinks were also tasty. We had a nice time.
google avatar

Yelp
Everything we ordered for breakfast was amazing!! The service was top notch. The candied bacon is a must. The biscuits and gravy were amazing.
google avatar

Jamika H.

Yelp
We ordered from here 2 mornings while staying in Nashville on vacation. Food was delicious each day! Menu has a nice variety, so we picked different items on day 2. You can't go wrong no matter what you choose.
google avatar

Shannon M. C.

Yelp
I enjoyed the small bites I had. The blood orange margarita was delicious. It was an event so the service was kinda show, but I assume it was just because it wasn't regular staffing.
google avatar

Herb S.

Yelp
Great food, if you can wait for a table. Food arrival was a bit long, but that's to be expected!
google avatar

Yelp
This was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. I'm a big Benedict fan and a fan of drinking with breakfast and this place did not disappoint. There was no wait on a Sunday at 10:30am. We ordered and everything came very quickly. The Keeping the Peace or whatever similar name it has where you have two different Benedicts... nothing short of BRILLIANT!! I had the Charles st Chicken and Flattop. Everyone else in the group had some version of biscuits and gravy. The drinks were awesome and in my husband's Bloody Mary, just like thrown in the glass, were these amazing pickled green beans. They were so delicious and our server gave me a cup with a few of them to go since I mentioned them!! We will see the folks at Rubys next time we are in town, no doubt!!
google avatar

Dana P.

Yelp
Loved the food. Always have the best options. Service...slow. Waitlist online- hostess didn't understand it. If you're not in a hurry, this is the place for you.
google avatar

Kellie D.

Yelp
We were so glad to find this place as the line for Pancake Pantry was down the sidewalk on a freezing cold morning. We were seated immediately here. Waitress brought us waters then disappeared for awhile. I ordered the Buddha Bowl and husband the Spanish omelette. Food came out fairly quickly. Buddha Bowl was fantastic-- lots of flavors mixing together. Husband enjoyed his Spanish omelette. He wanted ketchup for his potatoes but waitress didn't check in on us for a long time, and we had to wait awhile on check. Otherwise, good food-- nice spot for breakfast.
google avatar

DeMario J.

Yelp
Wait time was minimal the day we visited. The service was ok (we did feel attended to off and on and questions were answered) but it also felt like one of those "where's my server" type vibes as well. The volume was good for the amount of ppl inside, not too loud at all. There is a bar if you prefer, indoor, and outdoor seating. The food is my reason for the lower rating. Everything seemed to need a bit more "umph". This place claimed to be New Orleans based and I needed a little more of that. Nothing was quite seasoned enough to give me that N.O. vibe or flavor profile. Worth a try: sure. Just do t expect a flavor kick to the mouth. Otherwise, solid place.
google avatar

April O.

Yelp
Came on a Saturday with 4 adults Was in town and met a friend and her friends for brunch. Of course I got a mimosa flight, whats a brunch without a mimosa. We each enjoyed our meals and had a blast talking and laughing. The customer service was A1 and I could see myself coming back when in town.

Yelp
Went to Ruby Sunshine to celebrate to of our friends birthday for brunch. The food was soooooo good I can't even put it in words. The moment we got the food I started eating. No picture, but straight to the point. In my belly! We'll be back soon!
google avatar

Tamika M.

Yelp
This was my first time going and I hadn't heard of it before. I was with a group of 10, celebrating two birthdays. We were able to get seated quickly without reservations. Everyone was so nice! The food is resoreasonably priced and delicious! I loved the ambiance and the decor! The whisk light fixtures with eggs in them, were my faves!
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
There is plenty of competition for breakfast in Nashville, and we really enjoy this bright breakfast spot. Solid breakfast classics and a few unique options are available. The coffee is good, and the mimosas are tasty!
google avatar

Weiting H.

Yelp
A nice breakfast/brunch spot with a variety of options. I got their biscuits and gravy, and it was delicious. The gravy had bits of meat in it, and the biscuits were soft and fluffy. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Tea L.

Yelp
I was invited for brunch and was excited. The best thing was the no wait time. The Bloody Mary was good but the food was just okay. The pancakes were dry and the French toast felt more like croutons then French toast. We liked the beignets buy they were in small pieces you don't get the fluffy soft texture you would expect. The trifecta was a good sample to try if you've never been there but only 1 out of 3 were impressive in taste. As for the mimosa flight- it was ok in flavor but for the price you could go somewhere else for a bottomless version. It was worth the try based on recommendation but it's not a "I have to come back" place.
google avatar

Clorissa C.

Yelp
The ambiance and service at Ruby Sunshine gave full fledged brunch! Location is great for a post meal stroll or to find something different to eat... Pictured is the Gulf shrimp omelette. The shrimp was so fresh it retained its original gulf flavor. No complement of seasoning whatsoever, so I was left to my own devices. We also got the basic two pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I mean it was exactly what it sounds like.
google avatar

Julia P.

Yelp
Ruby sunshine never fails!! I had the breakfast tacos with chorizo and they were phenomenal. The sauce and tortillas were amazing. Everyone enjoyed their food! Service was great and we were able to get in quickly.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
The wait is pretty much the same as for any brunch spot in the Nashville area. We were seated outside (dogs allowed) and they had live music. She was really good! I think they might be under staffed as it wasn't as prompt but they were attentive. Had the breakfast tacos with Shrimp with a side of breakfast potatoes. The tacos were good, but I think the potatoes were a bit overcooked. I think the portion of potatoes was a bit small. Parked at a parking garage across the street from the Belcourt Theater. Street parking available as well. Overall it was good and will go back to try a different dish.

Ken M.

Yelp
Sat down fairly immediately with a good view of the line at Pancake Pantry :). Ordered the make your own omelette which comes with 1 protein and a cheese, neither of which I wanted. I asked the server if I could just do a couple of veggies since they are cheaper than the proteins and cheeses and she said sure. When I got the bill, sure enough she charged me for all the veggies and when I asked she said that the menu was wrong and didn't include any proteins or cheeses and wished they would fix the menu. Okay, right. Other than that, the food was just decent. It's a great location and the food is fine if not great, too bad the service is off.

Dana P.

Yelp
Food is great. Always love the atmosphere. Service is slow, or atleast at the bar. Hostess didn't understand the online waitlist.
google avatar

Drew G.

Yelp
I really love this place for brunch. I always sit at the bar and enjoy the overall ambiance. The food is fantastic! I can't decide on my favorite dish. I have loved everything that I've tried here. The sweet heat chicken and French toast bites are excellent. I can't decide which one of the Benedict's is best but I love the trio!! The breakfast sandwich is top-notch and delicious and the tacos with chorizo are definitely worth ordering again! I look forward to coming back!
google avatar

Andrea M.

Yelp
I was only in Nashville for the weekend & I had Ruby Sunshine twice lol. I had the Hot Honey Chicken with French Toast. WOW it was absolutely delicious! I wish we had one in Atlanta.

Ashlie M.

Yelp
Food was amazing! Our server was very attentive. Very cool vibe. Excited to come back and try more things on the menu!
google avatar

Alexa B.

Yelp
Had the soupiest shrimp and grits I've ever had at Ruby Sunshine. The bartender recommended them... he was kind, I will say. Ion know what I was expecting...but whatever it was, it wasn't it.
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
Long line at a place across the street so we tried this place. It was very good! Staff was friendly and food very good. Try the cane syrup butter and biscuits. Fantastic!

Greg K.

Yelp
This place serves #ThatBrunchLife. My wife and I have never had beignets before. They're fried pastries with powdered sugar, if you didn't know. The nicest people work here. If you're in line next door at the pancake pantry, come on over. This place is JUST as good.
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
The first time I saw Ruby Sunshine it was packed and there was a line. So when my friend group chose Ruby as our weekend breakfast spot, I expected a wait. Somehow we lucked out by it not being crowded and got a table immediately. Even though there wasn't an overwhelming crowd, the service was average. It took a long time to get food. The grits weren't as thick as I prefer and the fish tasted like the grease needed to be changed. My friends had shrimp and grits, which was more runny than preferred. I think we'd give the restaurant another try and select other dishes.

Sergio A.

Yelp
came to eat breakfast on a weekday and was not too crowded as sat down right away. Enjoyed the coffee and food as the portion was great to start morning.

Shannon L.

Yelp
The food is always excellent. Love the atmosphere there, service is great. The seasonal beignets are always delicious.

Ellie W.

Yelp
We joined the waitlist and when we were 1st in line to get seated the hostess seated 4 other parties before us who just walked in. Then when we asked her about it she just kept upping the time telling us they are waiting for a table to open when we had just watched 4 tables open and she sat newer people.

Sydnee W.

Yelp
Food was the only saving grace about this experience. The service was basically absent. Our server did not come to check on us once. I found a pitcher and refilled our waters after a while. We waited 20 minutes with empty plates waiting for our server to give us the check- we could've just walked out really. We asked for an iced latte and it was just cold brew (one could easily tell) - talk about false advertising.
google avatar

Millah J.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite local places in Nashville. Not only are their brunch drinks great - get the Morning Margarita and thank me later - but the food is *chef's kiss*. I'm partial to the Migas, fried green tomatoes, shrimp omelette, loaded tots appetizer, shrimp & grits, and biscuit with cane sugar. Yeah, I like a lot! If you're ever visiting Nashville, stop in to see Rick, Dee, Tiana, Greg or Abby...they'll take care of you!!

Erica E.

Yelp
Cool place and wonderful food! Really worth it. Don't miss it if you are looking for a great breakfast menu.

K C.

Yelp
Everything was delicious! I had one of their seasonal specials: the strawberry cheesecake stuffed french toast. It was fantastic! I used a little syrup with it, but I really preferred it with just the cream it was served with. My husband had the white chocolate bread pudding pancakes. If I ever go back, I'm getting that for sure! I had a couple bites of his & it was divine! Our server was pleasant. We were seated by the door, so my only complaint about the atmosphere was that we heard the music playing indoors AND the piano from the musician playing on their patio overlapping. Not a deal breaker by any means, but one music source would have been more ideal.
google avatar

De'Laka B.

Yelp
Ambience is super hipster. Drinks are pretty good. I didn't see anything on the menu of interest. Great spot to people watch. Service was decent.
google avatar

Vivian G.

Yelp
I wish we had this in my neck of the woods. It's such a perfect combo of breakfast/brunch/mimosa/drink. I didn't partake in the drinks bcuz I was doing enough of that at night, but the food was so good I came twice while staying down the street. It gets crowded after 9, so going before then helps. My first visit I got the Eggs Blackstone, Benedict with the sauce & everything that u love about a Bennie. My next visit I got the French toast bananas foster, you think u died & went to heaven,&some.bacon on the side confirms that! Wow! Service is on point t & the coffee is light but tasty. The place is noisy, but that's bcuz if you're eating with friends or solo, you will most likely exchange pleasantries with people you don't know, and that was so great. I met another New Yorker, like what! Great spot! There's a few more throughout Nashville.
