Ruby’s Cafe Review - Nolita - New York - The Infatuation

"Pass by Ruby’s at 7pm on a Wednesday, or 10am on a Saturday, or 1pm on a Wednesday, and you will be able to see one thing: the people like it here. This small little place on Mulberry just a few steps down from Rubirosa is typically packed with people, both inside and overflowing onto the sidewalk as they wait for their spot at one of the (very few) tables. But unlike a lot of other Australian cafes serving avocado toast to people lining up to take pictures of it, Ruby’s isn’t new. In fact, it’s been around for a long time - since 2003. The good news is it’s still going strong today, with a great menu of salads, burgers, sandwiches, pastas, and fish. Come here when you need a breakfast, lunch, or dinner that checks off any or all of the following boxes: affordable, kind of healthy, not healthy, super cute, and super casual." - Katherine Lewin

We ate here 3 mornings in a row on our trip in May 2023. It's that good! It felt like I was having breakfast at my Maw Maw's house.❤️ Delicious food, cozy atmosphere, very friendly service. I can't wait until this May when we get to go back!

Stayed a couple nights at the RV park down the road and had breakfast here. Great food, super nice people, cute decor. Now if only they had real cream for their very good coffee….

Excellent service and excellent food. We had breakfast there and everything was so tasty. The owner was there and he was very nice too. Do yourself a favor and eat breakfast here! Prices are low and quality is high.

Google
Slowest service ever. I had to wait an hour when they told me 15 minutes. They also notably served people who were of a paler complexion before me. I will NEVER come back here

Yelp
Ruby's is a great place for a plate lunch or breakfast. Just don't get in a hurry. Eunice is a unique little town known as the Cajun Music Capitol of the world. Things move at a slow place around here and Ruby's is no exception. If you've got time though, it is worth a visit. My first trip to trip to Ruby's was at lunchtime. It was pretty crowded with all locals which is a good sign. The wait was brief and our order was taken quickly. The wait for the food was not brief and I started to get nervous since I only had an hour for lunch. When the food arrived though, time was less of a concern. I'm talking legitimate Cajun cooking that fills you up and makes you smile. It's science. My second trip was for breakfast. The place was still filled with locals and there was still a delay in getting food. But this time, I had no time limit and was stress free. We had a large table of work folks and our orders hit all of the highlights of their breakfast menu. I got a western omelette. It was a good choice and my co-workers all reported similar happiness with their food. Prices are very reasonable and the servers are very friendly. If you find yourself in Eunice and have some time, make sure to stop by Ruby's.

Yelp
I like the jalapeño burgers and the pecan salads. They offer a little cup of dessert after your meal. Try it is tasty. Wish they would update it to be a more 50s diner style inside and milk shakes. Kick it old school.

Yelp
Awe man, this place is the PERFECT spot to go to for down home southern cooking just like your grandma makes! They have daily lunch specials so today they just so happened to offer beef tips with a choice of two sides. YUMMMMMMMMY!!! The beef tips were seasoned so well and so flavorful, I ate the entire serving it was so good and brought me back to when I was a kids eating at my grandparents. The mac & cheese was tasty too as well as the green beans. Very small location and a lot of regulars come in so get there early to beat the lunchtime rush. Staff is super friendly, they have really good prices and the food comes out fast and hot! I will definitely be back next time I am visiting my family!

Yelp
Been a Ruby's fan since birth LOL. Never disappointed, whether I get my order to go or dine in. Always see familiar faces amongst the happy customers.

Yelp
Great lunch specials and bread pudding in a small town cafe. Nothing better! Waitress was super nice and attentive. Crab Cakes were very good.

Yelp
Cafe style, good food. Nice atmosphere, great morning biscuits! The owners are really nice guys!

Yelp
Generous portions, fast service, good prices, and friendly local atmosphere, make this small place a winner. The plate lunch specials are a must order. I enjoyed the shrimp cooked to perfection with rice and 2 sides as well as a salad. The Black Eyed Peas were scrumptious and the green beans were awesome. The Ice T was also very refreshing.

Yelp
Consistently awe are pleased with the food, service, setting, and ambiance at Ruby's. In fact today we showed up 35 minutes before closing the lunch service and we were automatically welcomed in and offered suggestions on the lunch menu. Today I took our server's suggestion and ordered the citrus salad, excellent. The server was on top of their game, the service was excellent, we were not rushed through our lunch.

Yelp
So I have read the reviews....and some say fast service......so if you are seated....order off the plate lunch specials section.......two other groups come in...they ordered off the regular menu and they both received their meals before you? is that considered fast service? Oh ours finally did come out.....35 minutes after we ordered.....food was good, but when your blood psi is already elevated from pitaful service....hard to enjoy the meal.....probaly will not return anytime soon.....your choice if you want to roll the dice on service......

Yelp
Crab cakes with crawfish cream sauce; I have not had many crab cakes in my life. If every crab cake could be like these, I might not much else. Amazing amount of crab, and just enough breading to make them slightly crispy on the outside. The sauce, with bits of crawfish, was decadent, in every good way. Alligator bites; The batter was relatively light, and thin, allowing you to fully experience the alligator meat, which was delicious Corn & crab bisque; There was so much crab in this dish! That's not a complaint! Velvety creamy goodness, with a generous amount of corn. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! David was our server, and was the model of professionalism. I was visiting a friend in the area, who suggested we try Ruby's. If I lived in the area, I would be here regularly.

Yelp
This quaint cafe has precious curb appeal and the friendliest welcome when you enter! I ordered one of the daily specials and was thoroughly happy with my meal and experience there. You get SO much food and the prices are great. I definitely found my spot for when I'm passing through Eunice!!

Yelp
THIS IS UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP I loved Ruby's now the place is back to the owners of it 1960's-80s. There is still a Ruby's cafe around the corner but I haven't been there, n they don't serve supper. The charm of this place is exactly the same, just diff name over the bar. Yuengling is about the only non bud coors type beer. Having a ham n cheese po'boy. Its good. Service was good once they noticed me. Odd hours so make sure you check. It was a good sandwich, I'd prob need to eat supper to be blown away so the stars are what they are.

Yelp
Great ambiance and great service. The food was good and the bar looked nice for happy hour. If your ever in the area be sure to stop in for lunch or dinner. There isn't too much in this town so this place definitely stands out. A must visit.

Yelp
Best seafood salad ever! Generous portions of grilled shrimp & crawfish with chunky crabmeat added - very fresh lettuce - delicious!! If that wasn't enough, the service was outstanding. Strongly suggest you give this place a try

Yelp
Outstanding Cajun food, great service. We were given good advice concerning this restaurant before the Eunice Players Theater.

Garen M.

Yelp
We had a great lunch at this place. They have lunch plates available so we chose the crawfish etouffe with fried eggplant. It was delicious. There were many sides and a salad. No one walks away hungry. The sides are mostly canned veggies, but that retro taste is sometimes just what you are looking for. Our waiter was tops.

Laci R.

Yelp
This place was fantastic! The staff was extremely nice and accommodating. We had a large group of 20 people and did not make a reservation. The staff did not hesitate to make us comfortable in an area for just our group. The building was beautiful, clean and very inviting. The food was delicious, definitely some of the best. The food portions were large and the prices were great for the amount of food you receive. We will be back!

Yelp
One of my favorite spots to dine in. It's a cute/cozy restaurant downtown of Eunice. You can sit outside and enjoy lunch/dinner with your love ones. The food is tasteful and the service is excellent.

Yelp
Great place for plate lunches. Good service and better food at a great price. Would highly recommend, especially if you want authentic home-style cajun food.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! Such good homestyle cajun food. I used to eat here pretty often for lunch while I was in school, but now that they've moved the business to the old Nick's building, they offer dinner too (which is also phenomenal). So now I can get my Ruby's on at night!

Yelp
Don't be deceived by the nice exterior! For lunch our dishes looked like they came out of a elementary cafeteria , way too salty and not to mention the complimentary Duncan Hines cake! :D The cashier even asked what we thought but didn't even try to make it right. I'm not sure about dinner but if it's the same cook save yourself a stomach ache!

Yelp
my sea food salad was ok, just ok by the way. not trying to judge a place from a salad but a salad is all i had

Yelp
Ruby's is a great restaurant. The lunch menu is "ok." The dinner menu is where the fun is at. The servers and bartenders are really nice and friendly. Not to mention this is the only place in Eunice with a REAL bar that can make, mix, and serve REAL cocktails and drinks.

Johnny G.

Yelp
This is an excellent place to eat. The food was delicious. The servers were kind and attentive. The building had that "old and quaint" vibe.

Tammy H.

Yelp
I had the displeasure of having lunch here where the corn was brown (it appeared they add new corn to leftover which may explain the variations in color) and the potatoes were instant. The hamburger steak was by far the best thing on the plate and that's not saying much. I also ordered a salad with dressing on the side that came smothered in dressing which I realized was a good cover for the brown lettuce underneath. Needless to say I was very disappointed after reading other reviews. My friends lunches were no better and when we told the waitress she jsaid I'm sorry and walked away. Maybe their regular cook was on vacation?

Kelsey G.

Yelp
Their summer menu is really tasty, especially the Citrus Pecan Salad with mango - pineapple vinaigrette. On weekdays, they serve plate - style lunches in addition to their regular menu of poboys and seafood plates. Entree selections for lunch range from traditional baked chicken to very Cajun choices, like jambalaya and ponce. All come with two sides, small salad, and dessert (usually a small piece of cake). As the sun goes down, the menu becomes more sophisticated with additions of steak, pastas, and more. Great place to grab a bite with friends and family.

Yelp
I was heading from Austin to my home town of Ville Platte for a visit with family and found myself in Eunice at lunchtime. I thought about a drive-thru fast-food burger, then woke up to the possibility of something better. Yelp first led me to Ruby's on Walnut, but it was closed. (It's only open for breakfast, I learned later.) Yelp then led me around the corner to Ruby's Restaurant & Courtyard. The old storefront, charmingly if sparingly decorated in a style that suggested the Golden Age at the beginning of the 20th Century, offered a daily special sandwich and daily special plate lunches with a choice of several meats and two side dishes (as well as an unmentioned salad of shredded lettuce with dressing). I had chicken stew over rice, with candied sweet potatoes and turnip greens). The stew liquid was an unappetizing flour paste, and I left most of it and the rice untouched on my plate. The chicken, turnip greens, and sweet potato, however, were all enjoyable. Including iced tea and tax, the reasonable cost was $10.52.

Yelp
Amazing home cooking, great staff and beautiful old atmosphere. Went for lunch. I had meatball stew. Husband had crawfish etouffe. Huge portion with salad and 2 sides. Will go back again for weekend menu

Yelp
Okay food, but pricey. If you want to hold an event there, BEWARE! Three times out of Four (took me a while to get it, that the owners just don't care) I made reservations for a large (well paying) event, and they screwed it up. First Time) For a Christmas Party, everything went fine. They charged me more than I had expected, but was overall satisfied. Second time) Called me the morning of the event (about 60 meals) and informed me that they "accidentally" over-booked and wanted to know if we could do it on another night. Really? The answer was HELL NO! They made it happen. Funny thing was, there weren't that many people in the rest of the restaurant, so I considered it suspect. Third Time) The night of the Christmas Party, we were placed in a much smaller room than was promised. When I asked the owner about it, he told me that he changed his policy, and if I wanted the bigger room, I'd have to pay them $1,000 over and above the catered meal cost. Very unhappy. Fourth Time) They called me a couple weeks before the Christmas Party and told me that they couldn't do it, that I'd have to change to another night. That was the charm. I told them to shove it. I called Rocky's Cajun Kitchen, and even with short notice, he made it happen.

Yelp
Wandered in here last during intermission of a show at the Liberty Theater. Had never been here because I don't live around Eunice.. it was also the coldest night of the year and downtown looked evacuated. Ruby's was packed, the food was really good, the staff was attentive and the check was extremely reasonable. I had a shrimp enchilada and my partner had a wonderful pecan and satsuma salad. We had such a surprising pleasant experience that I tipped almost 40% because to me that was what it was worth.

Yelp
Excellent food every day! Thanks for delivering during the week! Keep up the great service to the community.

Yelp
This restaurant in an out-of-the way town sits on the old main street. It specializes in Cajun food. The meals we ate were excellent. I ate the grilled shrimp, and this might have been the best plateful of shrimp I ever ate anywhere. It is really easy to overcook shrimp so that it is at least a little bit rubbery, and there was no hint of that here. My husband ate the specialty of the house--crawfish gumbo over rice and a piece of fried fish, and he also thought his meal was excellent. I don't know how many places there are to eat in Eunice, but this place is not just the best of a limited choice: this restaurant would stand up in much more varied markets! Highly recommended.

Yelp
Went out exploring about an hour from the house and decided to go to Eunice for a little shopping. Wow! Stumbled on Ruby's and fell in love. The food was excellent . My husband had a shrimp poor boy that was very tasty . Perfect size, dressed well and the shrimp were fried to perfection. It was not all bread! The homemade onion rings were heaven. My mother-in-law had a ham and cheese sandwich that was well dressed and she raved about it. I had a plate lunch that consisted of a salad, two sides of my choice, coleslaw and macaroni salad that were super. The best part was the entree, crawfish etoufee over eggplant. The crawfish were not fishy, spiced just right and the eggplant was fried like french fries. It was soooo good. My meal was less than $10.00. We all liked our meals so much, a take out box was not necessary. We all three split a piece of chocolate cake with chocolate icing. It was excellent also. We will be back and next time with friends for dinner. A+ service from our friendly waitress and the beautiful surroundings in this treasure of a building made for a delightful lunch.
