9 Southern California Spots for Actual Carhop Service | Eater LA

"Ruby’s Anaheim asks that you stay put after arriving and calling in an order from their massive diner menu. Just tell them your car’s make and model, and they’ll bring out the shrimp and chips, patty melt, or hot chocolate." - Mona Holmes

We had a good family dinner on a friday night. Love the paper car activity of the kids. And of course milkshake! They also have an unusual calamari sticks instead of the normal ring shape, but still taste like calamari so all good.

Google
Our go to breakfast place. Super clean and food is great. Stuff are very nice too. They have two trains running up over the head. My son enjoys to watch them.

Google
Yes, it’s actually 5 stars. Just go- you won’t regret it. Hot, fast, simple and so delicious. Not greasy or cheap either. Thick pattys, hand dipped tenders, generous salads and of course milk shakes. Super clean- gracefully aged classic diner. Thanks for doing such a good job!

Google
This place has a great mushroom cheeseburger. Ordered mine with chili cheese fries. Also got calamari as an appetizer. It was all very good!

Google
Food was delicious. It took them a bit of time to get it out due to graduations taking place nearby. Service was good. Clean place, clean bathroom. Parking was fairly easy to get. Getting out during traffic sucks. I had eggs Benedict with French toast. Eggs were perfect and the holandaise sauce was amazing. French toast was small but potent in flavor. 4⭐

Google
When is say the worst service its an understatement. Took some time to be served and orders taken. When the drinks were brought out no straws were given and was looking around for 5 min when i had to yell out for a waiter that wasn't our server to provide us some. My kids ordered shakes and were brought out after they had finished half their food. Had to get up and look for a manager for to go boxes. Then the cherry on top no pun intended but my 10 yr old daughter gets a red gumball and is excited to get a free rootbeer float but waited at the front desk for more than 5 min and at least 4 people looked at me but failed to assist us. I told her they dont want to attend to us and we had to leave. She was pretty sad and upset she didn't get her footwear float. 0/5 stars... wont be returning. P.S. Didnt mention the bill was given to us in record time so we can get out of there because they were closing.

Fun and friendly joyful staff, really digging the old school 50’s theme restaurant. I have the seafood combo and burger reasonable price and good food.

Yelp
I love coming here occasionally. The place is an awesome vibe. Food: I haven't been disappointed here before. I love the mushroom swiss burger and my daughter says this place has the best grilled cheese among other places she's tried. Their milkshakes are MUST-HAVES! Cost: Prices are standard across the board. I think they are fair. Atmosphere: There is wifi there and the train at the ceiling is always fun for my son. It's a great distraction to keep the kids entertained as they eat. Service: The staff are all friendly and smiling to my family.

Yelp
I came on a Thursday for dinner and it was a steady flow of customers and lots of families. Not too loud and had the old school music playing in the background. Good service. Loved the that this place hasn't changed and become modernized. Still true to the years of diner experience. Oreo milkshake was a must and it did not disappoint. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and let me tell you the way it was put together was eye appealing. I go to many burger places and Ruby's presentable burgers are incredible and delicious. I don't know why I haven't come here sooner!

Yelp
My family and l have been going to this location for a few years and, it has become one of the restaurants we often visit. The staff have always been very friendly and very attentive. My family and l have breakfast at this location and the food never disappoints . It is one of the few restaurants that l can eat at that doesn't make me feel ill afterwards. With a family of four this restaurant is both affordable and great for a family with small children. My kids love the trains and the overall 50's decor, they even love the 50's music that they play. Overall it is a great family restaurant and it's so nice to have restaurant like Rubys so close by. Thank you to the staff of Rubys that make my family's dining experience so enjoyable .

Yelp
While more and more fancy and pricey burger joints are popping up everywhere, there is nothing more down to earth and American than grabbing a classic cheeseburger and a shake or a Coke from a Ruby's. This 1950's themed diner has been a part of many local communities for over four decades and very little has changed through the years. The restaurant still features the same booths with bright red and comfy sofas, the servers still wear the same vintage retro-style uniforms, and memorabilia from the days of Big Band music still decorate the walls. Their burgers are always good and accompanied by fresh and piping hot shoestring fries that are properly salted. The meat is flavorful and not too greasy. I also like the toasted brioche bun. I usually go with the classic which comes with American cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and Ruby's secret sauce. Sometimes when I want to add some flavors from south of the border, I'll order the guacamole burger. Another one of my favorites is the hickory burger which comes with smoked bacon and BBQ sauce. I find the prices here reasonable and affordable for a treat at a local diner. Their service is usually prompt and courteous. The atmosphere is bright and cheerful and is certainly family friendly.

Yelp
Had a great experience here. Highly recommend their green beans, turkey club with sourdough bread, Chinese chicken salad. Their service was also excellent.

Yelp
I've lived in Tustin for over 27 years and have visited Ruby's a few times over the years. Over time, managers, waitstaff, and even the food have changed. However, I recently returned to this old-fashioned restaurant, and oh my gosh, I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food is! They've really stepped up their game when it comes to the quality of their burgers and fries. It was the best burger I've had in a long time. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I went there on a Tuesday and by Friday I was back again. The service was excellent, with friendly and attentive staff who made sure everything was just right. The restaurant was clean, and the atmosphere had that classic, nostalgic diner feel. If you're looking for a great burger and a fun dining experience, I highly recommend giving Ruby's another try! Thanks to the manager for having such a great team.

Aamir H.

Yelp
Amazing service and food! The waiters are professionals and extremely attentive! Ambiance throws you back!

Yelp
We came here with kids on a Tuesday! The restaurant was not crowded, and the server was able to accommodate us with having our kids sit on their own table. The food was good, your typical burgers and fries. What I love about Ruby's is the shake and the chocolate shake did not disappoint. The ambiance was kid friendly with a train track that goes around the restaurant, so the kids were entertained. Service was good too so overall it is a good place to take the kids.

Yelp
Bradley. Gave us great service. He was very attentive to us. All our questions answered with a smile. We give him a APLUS

Yelp
I've been going to Ruby's since I was a kid and I tell you, this place is something special. If you love an old fashioned 50's diner, Americana themed with decor and menu to match, this is it. We especially love coming in around the Holidays for the touch of Christmas nostalgia, seriously this place is a major throw back minus a juke box haha You can grab a nice sized burger here, skinny fries or "frings" (half fries half onion rings) on the side and the most epic shake you will ever have (I recommend the strawberry, vanilla or chocolate) But you could always go with a peanut butter or mint! Ruby's diners are getting harder and harder to find, but this one in Tustin is a great location with ample parking and right on the corner. A great, different date night awaits you here, and I HIGHLY recommend sitting under the ceiling mount train for an extra touch of entertainment. Great service all around, thank you Ruby's for the memories!
google avatar

Nathalie M.

Yelp
I'm so sad... this place has changed so much. I usually door dash, but today we dined in. All the things I've loved about Ruby's are no more. No juke boxes at the tables, bottomless fries, or what's going on with their cinnamon roll French toast (see image) that has always been a go-to favorite. I've never seen a skinner French toast, it was more like a crepe. I came here with someone who is not from the US, hoping to give them a classic American diner experience and it was a disappointment :( I know it's not their fault, but came for good food, and a full 1950's theme, but no waitress in their cute uniforms and food was mediocre I'll definitely try again, hoping it was just an off day. I will add that I appreciate that they still have the paper cars for the children, the gum ball machine, and the train operating on the ceiling track.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had lunch there several times in the past month. Our food has always been very good. On May 16th, Juan G was our server. He had a big smile on his face when he approached making us feel welcome. He brought our drinks right away. The food came out quickly and was exactly as we had ordered it. I like that it wasn't loud in the restaurant as so many places are. We were happy with everything from start to finish and will return again soon. I hope the manager sees this and will let Juan know we appreciated his superior service and congeniality. He was friendly, professional and efficient.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
Decent fish and chips and bacon cheeseburger. Classic 50' look. Very good milk shake. Round it up to 5 stars.
google avatar

Dennis L.

Yelp
This place is delicious. I'd give them 5 stars but my table was a little sticky when I sat down. Other than that, it was a great experience for the family. Arrived on a Sunday at 11am. This place is busy!! Like ... really busy! I kid you not, people were going in and out every 5 minutes. I had no idea it was that freakin busy!! We ordered the ruby burger. I added an egg on top of it. It came with French fries too! Also got 2 kids meals. The grilled cheese and the chicken tenders. Both also had fries with them. The strawberry milkshake was the best, as my kids loved it! Thick, creamy, and full of flavor! Yum! They brought us waters also, and even little cups for the kiddos! Straws were also provided, didn't even have to ask! They gave two foldable cars for the two kids too. It was an amazing experience.

Yelp
I dropped by to take advantage of the BOGO offer. It's been forever since I ate at Ruby's. Easily 10+ yrs ago at the one in Crystal Court. So it was a bit nostalgic. I ordered to go since I was starving after 3 hrs of pickleball. Got the Hickory Burger with fries. It was a monstrosity of a burger. Bacon, onion rings, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese and a big patty. Overall I give it a B- because I wasn't a fan of the hickory sauce and the regular fries were awful. I wish I would have upgraded to onion rings. The other entree was the albacore (tuna) melt. It's been a while since I've had a tuna melt. It was yummy but a little light on the amount of tuna they gave me (Shrinkflation) and I upgrade to sweet potato fries. I gave this sandwich a B+ Overall this place is deserving of 3 stars but service was nice so I gave it 4.

Yelp
Ruby's Diner has always been a favorite. Love the Theme! And of course, love the food! Ordered were Chocolate Milk Shakes, a Guacamole Burger and my fave - The Hickory Burger! Make it a point to check Ruby's Diner when in Tustin! Shout out to Juan for such great service! Ruby's Diner opened its doors December 7, 1982, on Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, California. Over 40 years ago, a small bait shack sitting on the end of the pier was converted to our first Diner. Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, with a name as simple as its menu, Ruby's Diner offers the Highest Quality Burgers, Fries, and Shakes with a service motto of "Make Room for Everyone™". https://www.rubys.com/our-story/ Check out my Tiktok Video on Ruby's! https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT86Qjcm8/

Yelp
I got an order to go here and the service was amazing. The wait time was low, and they were quick to get the food out. Jorge was my server, his diligence was outstanding from getting the soda i ordered out first so I had something to sip on while I waited to making sure I remembered to get ranch and ketchup with my order. He even went above and beyond to make sure if I needed a soda refill before I left. To top it off, the food was packaged really nicely and he even offered me more cherries for my drink! Since I ordered to go, I wasn't there long but the overall ambiance felt the same as any other ruby's based on the entrance/waiting area alone.

Shaw K.

Yelp
Walked in to have lunch on a weekday afternoon and it was surprisingly busy. I'd like to preface by saying I have a soft spot for Ruby's as there is a sense of nostalgia when I eat at one. I got a Ruby melt burger which was a little pricey in my opinion at $15 but it was actually quite delicious. The patty was juicy and the grilled onions really made the burger taste delicious. The fries however were a miss and the ketchup tasted off. I also ended up getting a peanut butter shake which was excellent and I enjoy that they split it into two cups. The servers were friendly and i enjoyed the decor as well as the toy train going around near the ceiling. I think the theme is great and I wish there were more of them around. I certainly seeing myself returning in a few months time based on just nolstalgia factor alone.

Dima A.

Yelp
Mikella was the most welcoming host to encounter. We walked in with a party of 11 and she had the best attitude and was so sweet and accommodating with our party. We were celebrating a birthday and although she wasn't our waitress, we were seated next to the entrance, and she continuously checked on us and was so smiley and positive. the ambiance was amazing and dessert and drinks were perfect for the occasion. 10/10 experience everyone was in a great mood

Yelp
I have always loved the 50's diner concept, and Ruby's is the best! The very first location opened 40 years ago here in Orange County. I joined their email list so I get all their deals and offers, like this weeks BOGO breakfast deal. The breakfast items, are delicious, especially the malted waffle. I also really love the classic Ruby's Burger, and the year round holiday themed Roasted Turkey Sandwich with cranberry sauce spread. Absolutely love their fries too! Oh and you gotta try the many flavored shakes!
google avatar

Maximiliano D.

Yelp
This place has always been one of the best burger restaurants in SoCal. The burgers are never frozen and delicious. Their chili cheese and Cajun fries are mouthwatering. Don't miss out on the shakes too. The staff is super duper friendly and the restaurant is extremely clean. Definitely worth it

Yelp
Our 1st. Time here in Tustin Ruby's Diner. We happened to charge outside in the same parking lot and big plus for us. We stop to charge and the this will be our New spot out here. Yelp
Best patty melt, best Asian chicken salad with best dressing. Best Food. We live in Corona but whenever we get a chance to be in Orange County we always go to this Rubys. Friendly service.
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
Wow, have you been to Ruby's lately.??Fast friendly service and yummy burgers for sure, but I was there during lunch on a weekend. And they did not miss a beat. Quickly seated, drinks order upon seated and our food was delivered efficiently. Great burgers by the way. And shakes are yummy. A for sure place to visit anytime of the day.
google avatar

Carla B.

Yelp
Delicious! The closed the Orange location, so my husband and I drove to this Tustin location. The burgers were fresh and yummy. We shared a banana split and it was exactly what we wanted.
google avatar

Tiffany V.

Yelp
I had an appointment nearby and saw this gem! All of the Ruby's near me have closed down and I was super excited to have the food again. The service was really great! The food hit the spot and brought back some really great memories. I'll definitely try to make it back!
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Got go for the Super Burger, or the Cobb Salad. Enjoyed the weekend eating here, and it was good food. Super Burger with thick cheese melted patties with everything on it. They have the steak or thin fries. Prices are just about right. Good customer service. I'd come back.
google avatar

Antonio M.

Yelp
Oh man, this food here was so delicious every crime every bite. The food was perfectly well-made. I can't complain about anything here. It was just perfect all the way around our server is on top of his job came quick. The place was very nice music from the 50s very clean, very comfortable temperature inside as it was a hot day even though they did not have A&W, which is my favorite. I still had a root beer anyhow, my burger was perfect. I ate it so fast. I almost bit one of my fingers. I'll I can't wait to come back with my daughter and have a Sunday or a milkshake to my birthday weekend I highly recommend everyone come here to eat. I've been to the Rubys and Whittier and this one is just as good. Only thing is they did not sell shirts here and that was a bummer. Guess I gotta go back to Whittier to get a shirt. Otherwise everything was top-notch to it score of 10 out of 10 clean tables clean restaurant, all the staff were incredibly nice and professional. We didn't have to wait or try to flag anyone down they were on top of everything perfectly. Everyone should be proud of this restaurant who works here it's a fantastic team.

Douglas V.

Yelp
First time we've had breakfast at Ruby's. Party of 5 included our 3-yr old granddaughter. She needs to each right away so we all ordered and asked our server to bring her meal as soon as it was ready. He was back within 10 minutes with her eggs and pancakes. He brought out the rest of our order shortly thereafter. Server was very attentive in checking on us and quick with coffee refills. They even gave us an empty cup to take home because our granddaughter liked the color and name. Will definitely return!

Yelp
Happy New Years 2022! Came here bc I was craving their malt shakes. It definitely didn't disappoint! We ordered 1 Double Vanilla Malt Shake to share. It came out in those 2 glasses, which was super nice Chicken Tenders Dinner, but it being served on top of fries didn't make the fries taste as delicious. It would have been a lot better served on the side of the plate. Not a fan of coleslaw, wish to had swap it out for fruit or something. Didn't try the coleslaw at all. Fried Green Beans was fine. I just didn't like how it tricks you that its filled up from the bottom on the cone, when there's actual liner paper crumpled up at the bottom then filled with green beans. I didn't care about the sauces, I had no idea it would come with all 3. I hadn't order or chose any sauce bc I didn't want any. I would have been happy if my green beans were just in a basket, so that reach wasn't so high. Overall, service was great. I didn't catch the young white girls name but she got our orders correct and was able to check on us for any drink or fries refilled. Though, it was not busy with dine-in. The takeout orders was super busy for this place on New Years Day 1/1/22.
google avatar

Bob J.

Yelp
Ruby's used to be my go-to place for a nice lunch, but not anymore. I ordered a Ruby Burger with Chicken, which costs around $17. They took away unlimited fries and give even less now with your order, which makes no sense. What's the incentive to go here anymore. Avoid the server Alfredo. I think that's his name. He's Mexican. He keeps saying "My friend" but proceeds to never check on your table and is slow. Waiters like this don't deserve a tip! Shakes are the only good thing left. I'd come here just for that if at all. Go somewhere else until they fix this place!

John N.

Yelp
$3.51 "Packaging Fee" for Takeouts? This is ridiculous for a traditional American restaurant. This used to be a go to place, but now not only the menu prices have gone up, but greed has taken over (unfortunately it seems to be an industry trend).
google avatar

Ellie S.

Yelp
love their milkshakes! good place to come with family for lunch, waitresses are always nice :)
google avatar

Elaine I.

Yelp
Don't know what is happening there, but the food is steadily going downhill. The French Fries taste horrible and are always cold now. They are definitely using a cheaper oil because it leaves a terrible taste in the mouth afterward. The fried fish is often not cooked all the way through. So disappointed because I really used to like this place. The service, however, gets 5 stars!
google avatar

Yelp
First time at a Ruby's and I love the vibe! It's so cute with all the diner props and the train just adds that special touch and even though we went late at night, the waiter was quite accommodating to what we wanted. Dine in is open! You get paper menus, and the napkin holder comes with your food. It is required to have masks when walking in! The kids shake cup was so cute! But I do think it's more worth to split a large shake because I was surprised the split shakes were not regular shakes. The oreo milkshake was pretty solid, I liked having the oreo chunks and it wasn't too heavy, thick or sweet. I did not taste any chunks in the cookie dough one in the one sip that I had but I think that would've made it better. The burger was.. alright. If I were to be honest it really does taste like an in n out burger. But the fries are a really good texture of crisp and fluff so it's pretty easy to eat a whole basket. PLUS you can refill!!!! The waiter was kind enough to get us mustard, ranch, and buffalo sauce to dip our fries into too. Side note: I expected the booth seats to be hard but they're quite bouncy, which is kinda fun. I would overall go to split fries and shakes with someone! Hope you go support so they stay in business because it really is a cute establishment :).

Richard O.

Yelp
Being a past customer of Ruby's I always came back to this place. Now,never again. The hamburger was a sloppy sandwich. Meat patty was like cardboard. The avocado was not fresh or flavorful. Bun was small and could not accommodate the extra lettuce that made it look large. Never to return!

Tom V.

Yelp
I took two of my granddaughters to this location and it didn't;t disappoint. They thoroughly loved their kids meals and I got to indulge in a juicy burger and fries. I even splurged and had a chocolate milkshake. Ruby's is still solid. I've been going here with my kids since 1985, and now I get to take my grandkids. Classic!

Skitter H.

Yelp
Food here taste average good for me just because I often venture to different food at different places. Calamari here came in a cheese stick size form of a giant squid, seasoned in bread crumbs and fried. Pretty tasty and interesting. I tried their breakfast pancakes & waffles, corn beef hash & tuna sandwich. Just pretty good nothing extraordinary. I can't taste the coffee flavor in their coffee milkshake and I requested for double the coffee. Customer service is good. Never once have a problem. Staffs are nice and polite. I came here not so much for the food or the service, but more for the nostalgic memories.
google avatar

Kel N.

Yelp
I went here for breakfast and the pancakes were soo good!! the overall diner theme is so nice too, there was even a little toy train above the tables :)
google avatar

Donovan C.

Yelp
Took my daughter here for lunch today. A family walked in as we did and got seated right away and the guy said he will be back to seat us in a moment. We waited for 16 minutes and never got a seat!! You guys need to work on that customer service!! No need to worry though. Rock & Brews took care of us!!
google avatar

Selmy B.

Yelp
Limited menu due to CoVid shortages. Went with breakfast found the Rubyspuds super greasy sliced potatoes with slivers of raw onions needed to be cooked longer. The ABC Omelette which was the only one on the menu was simple with strips of bacon, cheese, and a hard half of avocado. Hubby had the Cinnamon roll French toast good size and he enjoyed them. Coffee is standard diner fare. Service was friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
We returned back to this great location for dinner. The milkshakes were fantastic, as always, service was quick and efficient. And I have to say, we received our milkshakes in record time. Just incredible service! And an update from the previous visit. There was definitely no tough burger like before, but I have to say it's still disappointing in comparison with the angus beef patties from the past. J.D.G previously asked me what can be improved? And I have to say, without hesitation, THE MEAT. This time around I had the seventeen dollar super burger, hoping for something, well, super. But unfortunately it was more of the same in the burger department. However, still looking forward to our next visit. Thanks!
google avatar

Isabel S.

Yelp
Terrible food, mediocre service and the one star is for cute decor. Maybe it was my fault for ordering fish and chips but I wasn't feeling a burger but my sister also had a crappy breakfast item - cinnamon roll pancake which was super eggy and had very little cinnamon roll taste. Back to my fish and chips, it seems like they pulled it from the back of the freezer and it was in there for 3 years. Overly fried and flavorless.

Yelp
I've been coming to this Tustin location for years. I've always had a great dining experience and enjoy their hamburgers. I think they serve up some of the best fries in the business. The decor is always fun from the pedal airplane to the overhead train moving along the track around the perimeter of the dining area. Big booths provide plenty of room to spread out and enjoy your meal. In the past, there was always competition to find a great parking spot and to put your name on the waiting list before the line was out the door. Now, I think the burger market is over-saturated with many boutique hamburger joints, all selling double digit priced burgers. They can be found at any decent sized center or mall. Ruby's is still busy, but to our advantage, you don't have the long waits or congestion to deal with, when you're hankering for a great hamburger. Over the years, Ruby's has evolved their menu to include unlimited fries. Personally, I liked that originally you got a big basket of fries with your burger. With unlimited fries, the meal seems to scrimp on the fries, and you feel like you have to constantly ask for more, to get a decent amount. This probably is beneficial in that it helps keep waste down to a minimum by giving customers a smaller portion when the meal is served, but I don't believe it presents well. This is just my opinion and as I said, I absolutely love their fries! There are many burger places to choose from, but I keep coming back here.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went in for dinner around Christmas time and enjoyed a great meal. It was a busy night with groups of people celebrating together. The service was excellent and the burgers were delicious. I enjoyed the gluten-free bun! We enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and cleanliness! We will be back for another meal soon!

Yelp
Had a great lunch here recently. They cooked the burger to perfection, to order. The fries are unlimited, but they are generous on the 1st round, you really don't need to ask for more. They had this special charity drive shake. It had the true taste of strawberries inside. They added sprinkles which added a nice surprise texture. - They emailed me a free bday shake offer - So glad I came in Place was clean. Service was strong, solid and attentive.

Yelp
The Tustin location is the best in my opinion. Each time we go there the service is excellent. Everyone is quick to greet us as soon as we walk in. I was a tiny bit disappointed to find out that you can't order breakfast items all day anymore. I used to love ordering the veggie scramble or waffle in the evening hours. I know this must be a corporate decision and it is no fault of the employees here. I guess the sales of breakfast items didn't warrant an all day offering ?

Yelp
Breakfast review. Came on a weekday morning. The service throughout my visit was exceptional. The booths are clean and comfortable. Aside from the usual 50's decor you find at any Ruby's, there was also some train related signage here and there. I ordered the french toast combo which also came with eggs (scrambled) and a choice of meat (bacon!). I had a cup of coffee as I waited for my meal. The coffee was strong & hot - pretty decent for diner coffee. My french toast was done properly but really nothing out of the ordinary. They provided more than enough butter on them! I had to pop a few extra statin pills to keep my cholesterol in check. The eggs were fine but the bacon was crunchy-hard and overdone. I accidentally dropped one piece onto my plate and it shattered into pieces! Overall all it was simply a good experience, no more, no less, which in Yelpspeak = 3 stars.
