Great café in Footscray with a nice outdoor seating area that is dog friendly. We didn’t have to wait for a table for two people outdoors at 1:30 on a sunny Saturday though the café was pretty busy and full. We had matcha lattes, smashed avo, shokupan with condensed milk, and the king oyster mushroom eggs benedict. Everything was of a good standard, but not mind blowing. The service was great though and the vibes are nice, especially on a sunny day.

The service truly stood out more than the food. I ordered a cheeseburger from the kids’ menu, and it arrived slightly undercooked. When I asked if it could be cooked a bit more, they offered to remake it fresh and even removed it from the bill. This showed how seriously they take customer satisfaction, and we genuinely appreciated it. The food was reasonably priced and tasted good. The place is usually lively and busy, often with a queue, but it’s very family-friendly and welcoming to pets, with a spacious outdoor area. The restroom was clean and thoughtfully equipped with a baby changing table.

A gorgeous little cafe hidden away in the suburbs. The staff are super friendly and whilst I only had their coffee, which was excellent, the brunch food others were eating looked phenomenal. Really enjoyed sitting outside in the sun as well.

Chef! Loved our meals & presentation was very nice too. Crowded cafe, fur babies space outdoors, optional outdoor dining space & a lovely gardening setup of natural herbs & food goodies.

The brown butter with condensed milk shokupan was amazing! The brown butter gives it a gentle, softened taste and the condensed milk a harmonising sweetness. Bread was amazingly toasted and equal in taste. 5/5

If ever there were a 5-star brunch place, this would be it. I ordered the congee and the oyster mushroom benedict – both were absolutely terrific. The flavours were fresh and well-balanced, and the presentation was spot on. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. Highly recommended if you’re in Footscray!

💜 Takeaway orders out front, so you don't have to deal with the crowd. 💜 Courtyard and indoors, heaps of seating, all full of people. Atmosphere was relaxing and upbeat, staff super available, food, drink, and coffee were great and fast. - Oat Magic was strong, which I loved. So many places make it weak. This was the best I've had for a long time. - Potato, Leak and Samorza Croquettes were incredible. Super interesting mix of flavours and textures. No downsides. 5-Stars

Lovely atmosphere and always great food and service at Rudimentary. Often a short wait for a table due to its popularity. Staff are always friendly and professional. Food is consistently good.

A green, open oasis in urban Footscray, Rudimentary has only been open a week and is already doing gangbusters: On a Friday afternoon the line stretched out the door as tattooed hipsters and mums with bubs crowded into the airy and sunny space. The cafe is anchored by open kitchen/dining room in converted shipping container. The space, all blond wood, green tiled counter, and sixties swivel chairs, opens onto the expansive, gravelly garden. Herb filled planters, plenty of bike parking, and a stretch of picnic ready astro turf makes for an inviting and relaxing place to chill and have a coffee. The well curated menu features waffles with figs, a brisket sandwich, a "raw" salad, and selection of baked goods, and plenty of eggy things. I had the crumbed green tomato sandwich with tomato relish, mayo, and pickled onion on a fluffy brioche bun. Very decadent for a veggie sandwich, but full of flavour (could fried green tomatoes be my new favourite Melbourne cafe trend? Very likely). I was super stoked to see a small, mixed green salad punchy with vinigar dressing accompanying my sandwich. Perfect to cut through the sweetness and richness of the sandwich. It was a very reasonable 11 dollars. My flat white was good, served plenty hot, as I like it, and service was friendly, if a bit rushed. So far, so good. I'm eager to come back and try a few more dishes here: As it is, Rudimentary has one of the best spaces in the west and at least one very good sandwich...Looking forward to next time.

Great experience with two kids, outdoor space, Sun shining, excellent food with clearly locally sourced (outdoor garden) ingredients Hope this stays a secret for a bit longer

I really liked how they designed and used the available space to create this Cafe. I would have never thought a place like this exists in Footscray. But as the place was new, it was quite busy at lunch time and had to wait for almost 45 mins, also they did not have enough tables to accommodate this vast number of customers. But overall the service was good i would say, it was not worse nor that good! They forgot to give us the menu for a time, but later on apologized for that. I ordered the all day brekky with 2 poached eggs and toast and all the rest (sausages, bacon, potato hash) were extra, which made it an expensive place to have lunch. But there portions was medium as well. And food was cooked quite well though on the well done side, which made it a bit chewy and hard.

Standing out from its surrounds Rudimentary's Danish looking design is beautifully juxtaposed against the gritty urban landscape of Footscray... And now that sounding like a wanker is over and done with we can get down to the food bit. It's delicious. It's not to frilly and not to simple but there is something on the menu for everyone. From breakfast burgers for the people who need to soak up the Alcohol the night before (I feel ya), to fancy sounding porridge, eggs, and sweet breakfasts. The menu is not specified into breakfast and lunch so I'm assuming you can order both all day and feel no judgements (just last nights). I came here on a Saturday around 10:30 and it was just starting to fill up. I ordered the crumpets with lemon and passion fruit something or other and it was delicious. The breakfast burger looked pretty more-ish too and so did the scrambled eggs. Coffee good, staff nice and attentive, ambience cool and casual. Will definitely be returning.

Great cafe, love the concept of using shipping container. We only had coffee and it was good. The menu looks great and I would definitely love to come back and try their food.

Poor thing. Waiting for more than 20 mins for just coffees, explained that the waitress forgot it and then someone else said sorry to us not that waitress! Food not good as well. Burger is just like mac

I went here with a friend on the weekend. The space is really beautiful, as is the garden. However, there was a very long wait for our table and my chai came out after 15 mins whilst we were still waiting in the garden. My biggest disappointment was that there were no vegan options. When I asked if they could make anything vegan, the first waiter said a flat out no and then gave us time to think about drinks. A second waiter came to take our order later, and she said she would check with the chef. The only thing they could make vegan was plain porridge (without any of the fruit) and toast (with jam and no butter). I ended up just having my chai. I'm sure their regular food is great but I am really shocked that in Melbourne, a cafe doesn't have at least one vegan option available. The chai was really good so I would come back here for tea and coffee at least.
