Detroit’s Best Steakhouses: Where to Eat Steaks in the Motor City | Eater Detroit

"Rudy’s boasts quite the selection of prime steaks, wagyu, and an awe-inspiring 28-ounce. Piedmontese tomahawk. The wine list is excellent, and there’s a full cocktail bar to boot. This isn’t the place to be shy, so order a martini, a steak, and some appetizers. Oh, and be sure to get plenty of sides — the mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and hand-cut French fries are all excellent." - Danny Palumbo

This is definitely the best restaurant in the area. Service was top notch, better than anywhere up to Bloomfield. I will say it was very difficult to eat dairy free. But that is sometimes common, not much as it used to be. High end restaurants are hiring chefs who create stock alternate ingredients. This area is quite tough for vegans and anyone avoiding common allergens. But this place was wonderful. Will totally fall in love when allergen friendly flair gets added. Highly suggest.

Google
Beautiful experience from start to finish. The staff was extremely attentive, our server was very pleasant and catered to my odd request of mixing lemonade with soda! The food was flavored very well. The non alcoholic drinks were very tasty. 100% will return and will continue to recommend!

This place is the hot place to be. It was very busy(Saturday night). Highly recommend reservations. Everything was super delicious and wonderfully plated. The waitstaff was attentive for how busy the place was. I was impressed. Tons of great dishes I wish I had enough room in my belly to try. We will have to be back.

Google
Obsessed! It’s so nice to have a local upscale dining experience without the hassle of driving to Detroit. The decor and ambiance is unmatched and the food is delicious! Must orders: Crab Arancini, Caesar Salad, Vodka Pasta, Mac & Cheese and the Carrot Cake!

Google
We had a nice dinner here even thou it was a packed. Our server Josh was great, he made good suggestions and made our experience a good one. The food was tasty and flavorful, the brussel sprouts were the best thing we ordered, steaks were good. The only things keeping this place from being a 5 star is the price, it’s a little bit too much for what it is and we had a reservation and we didn’t get seated right away and still had to wait about 15 min for a table which isn’t horrible but not 5 star either. Will go back for sure thou!

Google
The only sucky thing is the price of things. Definitely you will be spending a pretty penny and most meals don't come with a side. So expect to pay at least $50 for a steak and an extra $14 for the mac and cheese which, BTW, is to die for! Better than union mac. Creamy but doesn't sit heavy. I'm glad I went with that as a choice. My fiancé took me here on a Tuesday night for my birthday. He had the Frites and I had the Creekside Filet, as the waitress suggested it was not as chewy of a choice over the ranch flat I was debating. $10 more, but I'm glad I took the suggestion. Cooked medium, slight pink on the inside, juicy and soft while the outside was perfectly seared with great flavor! It barely needed sauce but the zip sauce went well with it. For an appetizer, the crab bites were good, but in my opinion a bit much in cost for the portion and could've used a little more cream in the middle. Overall, very pleased with the visit!

Google
Overall, great dinner. We got the sourdough bread which was great (not so sure about the very lemon butter). The crab arancini was amazing and would get again. The wagyu meatballs were decent but would probably pass on those the next time we go. I got the prime ribeye with zip sauce and my wife got the fried chicken. Both were great and no complaints there. We split the mac and cheese with onions and bacon and the brussels. Also great. My espresso martini was 10/10 and my wife got the strawberry mojito and passionfruit vodka drink which were both somewhat sweet. It was expensive but we knew that coming in. Overall good experience and would recommend.

Google
The place was phenomenal, but our server, Teena made the experience top notch. She had the best recommendations with all of the food and cocktails/wine. We would absolutely go back and ask for her. Thank you for such a wonderful time!!

Yelp
2nd visit, for Valentines Day. 445 res. We arrived early and we're immediately seated. Staff mentioned there was a 90 min time limit for the seating. The bar was full. It's a very popular bar and alot of people were eating apps and drinks. Wagyu meatballs in romesco sauce. 4 small balls for 17. They were good but the portion could be larger. Bread service $9 for a whole loaf Sourdough rye was outstanding. Comes with compound butter which is very lemon forward. Maybe too much so. Friendly staff nicely attired, very young . Very good staff. I asked for a wine rec and their guy came over and gave us an excellent rec. SouthAmerican pinot for 85. It was perfect. Wife had fried chicken Half chicken very crunchy. 25. I think it a bit overpriced. It's good. Not great. I had Duroc 160z pork chop. Cooked beautifully. An apple gastriqe also. Excellent. Sides were mashed potatoes. Good flavor Not great.Could be creamier. Creamed spinach is possibly THE best item on the menu. Black truffle lemon and parm. Our server was a 22 yo delightful young lady. Attentive without being annoying. Good job. There's a certain energy to this place. Absolutely beautiful. We had 2 drinks a bottle of wine 2 entrees and an app and 2 sides. $277. Still 4 stars. I love this place. I'm going to be a regular. Next visit I'm getting steak. I forgot. Dessert. Creme Brule and French silk pie Great!

Yelp
First time at Rudy's. Took my wife for her birthday, an amazing experience from start to finish. Stephen our server was personable, he was attentive without hovering and the rest of the staff took great care of us. Five Stars to Stephen for sure! We started with the Crab Arancini that was 5 stars all day long. We also tried the Sashimi, again, just amazing. For dinner I had the 14oz Rosewood Ranch Ribeye, was cooked perfectly and the crust on it was spot on. My wife had the Mushroom Pasta and she added shrimp, another winning plate filled with flavor. As far as sides we had the Grilled Broccolini and Mashed Potatoes, they did not disappoint. Wife had a Grey Goose Dirty Martini with house stuffed blue cheese olives, I closed the experience with an Old Fashioned (used Woodford Double Oak instead of the house Bullitt). Stephen surprised us at the end with the house made Carrot Cake for my wife's birthday, light and tasty way to end a fantastic meal. Highly recommend, while the price point is in the range you'd expect from a fine dining steak house, it was well worth the cost and we certainly will find our way the Rudy's again.

Yelp
My husband and I couldn't wait to try Rudy's Prime Steakhouse, and we were not disappointed! We started with the Caesar salad, made with baby gem lettuce. The staff thoughtfully split the salad for us, accommodating my vegetarian preference by providing a balsamic dressing, since their traditional Caesar dressing has anchovies. This level of service was truly appreciated. For our main courses, we shared the Vodka Pasta and the Mushroom Pasta. Both dishes were so amazing that we finished every bite. My husband also ordered the lamb chops; while he found them good, they weren't quite his favorite. For dessert, we had the carrot cake. It was very good, but, I still prefer the version at Jay Alexander's. Sorry, Rudy's! The ambiance here is very elegant and inviting, which makes it a perfect spot for a date night. We really enjoyed our experience, and look forward to returning very soon. Great job Rudy's!

Yelp
The best filet I have had in a long time! Awesome spicy Pear Martini that was our server's recommendation. Bread and butter were the low point of the meal (just kinda weird butter and bread combo). Prices were a little stupid for Clarkston... Noise level was pretty bad....even on a fairly quiet Wednesday night...like every other restaurant in town due to poor acoustic treatment

Yelp
Rudy's is a fantastic addition to the Clarkston dining scene, bringing a much-needed classy steakhouse to the area. This spot offers a memorable dining experience, with a menu that averages around $100 per person--well worth it for the quality of food and ambiance. The steaks are truly the highlight: perfectly cooked and packed with flavor, they're among the best in the area. The shrimp cocktail and burrata are both standout starters that I'd highly recommend. While the crab cakes fell a bit short of expectations, the bread was fresh and delicious, setting the tone for a great meal. The atmosphere strikes the right balance, offering a classy, well-lit space without the overly dim ambiance you often find in chophouses. The service here is top-notch as well--attentive and precise, making the evening feel smooth and well-paced. I'm thrilled to have Rudy's in town and will definitely be back. It's a spot that combines excellent food with a refined setting, perfect for a special night out or an upscale steak fix.

Yelp
Bustling place with nice atmosphere. Menu - overpriced but typical steakhouse menu Oddity. No ice tea, coke was in a mini can - sent back as it would not have filled a regular glasses and refills would be pretty darn expensive I ordered the waygu burger. Small , they never inquired on how I would like it prepared and it came out well done. Over salted. Overall I would not return. Overpriced over seasoned and underwhelmed

Yelp
Absolutely amazing time spent here at Rudy's tonight. They were able to accommodate my friends large party for her birthday. Every server was amazing and the food and service was top notch. I really like the ambience in here and it's an open kitchen atmosphere so you can see them cooking which is really neat. I had an old fashion, burnt orange manhattan, truffle fries, Brussels, burrata, and carrots. All were great! You will have a great time here.

Yelp
The food was outstanding and the service was awesome. A great new Clarkston Steakhouse.

Yelp
Omg. This place is one of the best steakhouses I have been to! We got the Wagu meatballs, calamari, Mac and cheese with bacon and onions, Wagu ribeye, and filet. The food was absolutely phenomenal. I am extremely picky! We will be back soon! The service was excellent and on point, as well.

Cynthia H.

Yelp
Grossly overpriced even bread is à la cart lobster tail the drawn butter was à la carte ridiculous, presentation was lacking one 5oz glass of house wine $18. Fine dining I'm very familiar with. This was a fine rip off. The remodel and ambience was very nice however, we were seated next to the hostess stand, which seemed to be the water cooler for the wait staff. It was the new kid in town, which is why we decided to give it a try, but it's definitely a one and done.
google avatar

Laura I.

Yelp
Service was impeccable. All four of us enjoyed the filets, and we shared the broccolini and fries. The steaks were cooked to order. We also had the sourdough bread basket with herb butter. The herb butter was quite lemony, so they brought regular butter. We loved the bread pudding and French silk for dessert. The ambiance was great. The restaurant was full, but we didn't find it crowded or too loud.
google avatar

Ray C.

Yelp
The renovations are awesome and probably the best vibe in Clarkston. However, there's very little to absorb sound. It was busy and all four of us had difficulty hearing each other and our server. The side dishes and bread were very good. The entrees were below average with above average pricing. We could have had much better meals at much better pricing elsewhere. I may try them again and if the food has improved, I will update this review.

Yelp
Had an excellent dinner at Rudy's tonight with friends. Ordered several steaks, one side, salads and an appetizer, everything was great. Service was very good, decor inside is also very nice. Highly recommend this place for a special meal.

Yelp
The atmosphere was amazing. Just moved from nyc and this place was one of the best meals we have had since. Unique plates that were delicious and the steak was outstanding and the service was even better. We didn't make a reservation and happened to pop in and were quickly seated at the bar. Love it and can't wait to go back

Rebecca L.

Yelp
I'm sorry to write this review! We've lived in Clarkston 40 years and watched Chris and Robert run Rudy's Market and now to open Rudy's Prime. We were so excited! 2 people in our party ordered ribeyes. They were less than 1/4 inch thick. Needless to say it wasn't enough. Everyone had 2 sides. 2 people ordered filets. One was well done and the other was pretty rare. They were both ordered medium. The drinks were terrific! The service was good and the restaurant is beautiful! Our bill was 534.00 before tip.

Yelp
Everything needs help, give them six more months to straighten out the issues. Food need help sorting out the correct seasonings as well as doneness. The ambiance makes it feel like it is an old converted building , no real charm just a box.
google avatar

Drew S.

Yelp
Great Vibe and good steaks. My gal and I split the tomahawk and I really liked the cream spinach. It was a little jazzier than most steakhouses takes on this staple. Had a delightful crunchy topping. I like the fact that it's a little dressy and has a great bar and cocktail seating area. Very attentive staff

Emily M.

Yelp
Had an excellent first experience at Rudy's prime steakhouse. My boyfriend took me here to celebrate my 25th birthday. We both grew up in Clarkston and were excited to go downtown. Having worked at two steakhouses, I had certain expectations, especially with the price points. I gotta say this place checked all the boxes. Our server, Joseph was super chill and told us about the specials. he was attentive, and really jived with us. We ended up sharing a ribeye and getting a few sides in an appetizer. My boyfriend was worried It wouldn't be enough food since we were sharing, but by the end we didn't have room for dessert. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone celebrating a birthday or anniversary. Food is great service was great ambience was perfect.

Yelp
We were really excited to try this place for a date night. Our typical go-to is The Fed so we were anxious to try out Rudy's next door. The restaurant itself is intimate and inviting. Service was good but unfortunately the food was very disappointing. We ordered a Waygu Ribeye. It was very undercooked. The center of our steaks were cold. It's never fun sending a steak back at any restaurant, it just never comes back the 2nd time tasting good. It wouldn't be a huge deal but when you're paying 75$ for a steak, it's a different story. We did end up ordering dessert and their carrot cake was delicious. We also enjoyed their cocktails. Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend. Our bill was over 200$ and we left unsatisfied and disappointed.

John K.

Yelp
Well I just tried to order a few desserts to go which they said they weren't set up for. I've eaten here and they've packed up a dessert for me. All that would need to happen is instead of putting g dessert on a plat, put it in the same box they did the last time llol. Let's disappoint a potential regular and not make money. Solid plan.

Yelp
We dined at Rudy's Prime last night and were not disappointed. The ambiance, service and food was wonderful. My only critique is that the main course came out very fast after the appetizers. We would have liked a little more time in between. Also, try the fried chicken with pepper vinegar.

Michael P.

Yelp
Over priced. Under sized. Too freaking loud. Food is good, but why do I need this experience? Can get better food at this price point. This may be Clarkston's clearest manifestation of its arrogance. You can get everything better at that price, but here you get to experience it a block away from Mill Pond.

Angela L.

Yelp
Went here for my birthday. Interior was gorgeous, I love what they've done with the place. Drinks were outstanding, service was impeccable, and food was unbelievably good. Best meal I've ever had, I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Robert has transformed his history location in Clarkston into a truly amazing Steak house. We had the lamb chops, prime filet, fish, and some of the best sides on the menu. The scallop appetizer was very tasty. The carrot cake topped off a great meal. It was nice to see the family is involved. Robert was away, however we were able to talk to Chris for awhile. Highly recommend the new leader in Clarkston dining!

Jeannie T.

Yelp
No complaints about the food, service or Ambiance... when Rudy's was Rudy's Market, that store was there for everyone. Rudy's Prime Steakhouse is only there for the well to do. Your food prices lock out probably 3/4 of the people whonlive in the area. Clarkston isn't Birmingham, Franklin or Rochester Hills. What are you all trying to prove. I mean seriously $65.00 for a drink. $30.00 for a side dish of carrots? I think it is just sad that you have made yourself just another snobbish restaurant. I guess the rich people will keep you in business.

Patty E.

Yelp
My family and I were so disappointed with the quality and price of the food @Rudy's Prime Steakhouse. To start, everything is à la cart, including the bread which is basic sour dough at $8.00. The appetizers are very small, expensive and underwhelming. The steaks cost a minimum of $75 each. They were so salty and my New York strip had a long strip of silver skin which was impossible to cut. There are so many other great steakhouses in Oakland County. This place is not worth the trip to Clarkston unless you are a rich person and like terrible food!

David K.

Yelp
Wife and I visited 11-15. Late seating as it's very busy Seated immediately. It's loud and lively no doubt. Server Nathan was good all night. Service is solid all around. The ow er is watching. We found a nice bottle of Chateau neuf De Pape for a hundred. It was good. I order lamb chops wife ordered vodka sauce pasta dish. Both excellent. Burata with marinated tomatoes was excellent. Mac N Cheese side was good. Wife's brocollini was tastey and very tough. Woody actually. The only food complaint. Had it refired. Still tough. Waiter took it off the tab. Carrot cake top flight. $258 total. We sat at he bar which is stunning for an after dinner drink hoping to see Tyson fight. Glad I missed it! The quartz bar is amazing. The atmosphere is vibrant. Very busy with people having a good time. Very welcoming. We feel comfortable there. Owner Robert is an attention to detail guy. He passionately stated his goal is to make this place better every day. I believe him. We will be back.

Mark K.

Yelp
Great dining experience! Very Nice ambience and decor. Started off at the bar while we waited for our table to be ready. The drinks were on point as well as the service. Our table was ready for our scheduled reservations. Nathan was our server and he was great. Great personality and very helpful with what to order. Everything we had was amazing. The crab arancini, wagyu meatballs, and the piedmontese tomahawk(cooked to perfection). I read a few other comments saying its pretty pricey. I just got to say, you get what you pay for and definitely worth the money.

Kate A.

Yelp
Definitely a must-visit! The food was simply outstanding, and the service provided by Jonathan and Ashley was fantastic. Their professionalism and attentiveness made the evening enjoyable. They were knowledgeable about the menu and ensured that every aspect of our meal was perfect. If you're looking for great food and exceptional service, Rudy's Prime Steakhouse is the place to be!

Yelp
This is the best small market I have been to in Michigan. There's longevity that comes from treating your employees right, delivering quality to the community, and running a good business. I lived in Clarkston several years back, but recall the trips to Rudy's for pizza, snacks and the like. I try to stop in here when I am in the area. Their Beer selection is great ; if I lived in the area now this would be my go-to. Highly recommend !

Patrick L.

Yelp
Thank you Rudy's for going above and beyond and making a special occasion the BEST suprise ever! KIMMIE YOU ROCK and I will be forever grateful to you for helping me to make my sister's birthday special. It's not easy celebrating a loved one long distance, but YOU made it HAPPEN! The mum plant is spectacular and I wish I was there to enjoy the "Bumby Cake" with my sister. I look forward to thanking you in person next time I'm in Clarkston, my favorite place in the whole world. Patrick Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Yelp
The best homemade salsa on the planet. Get the green salsa. Trust me. You will love it! Also, they offer the best catering food as long as you don't mind picking it up. They are the secret to our great parties.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
Very friendly with a interesting mix of local products. Good pizza, and pepperoni sticks. Tons of beer with decent prices. The deli counter isn't cheap, but everything has been really good.

Lu H.

Yelp
I recently had Rudy's Market cater a baby shower brunch. I can't say enough about the service, beautiful display of food on trays and in chafing dishes, and great tasting food. I highly recommend and will definitely use them again! The French toast bake was mouth watering good and the gourmet fried chicken for the chicken and waffle station were amazing. The caramelized bacon was a great addition! Loved everything.
google avatar

Perla F.

Yelp
Their pizza dough is very good, but today I was told I won't be charged for the paper bag to put in as in other costs extra to have my groceries bagged.
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
We always drop in here when we're in the neighborhood for dinner. Just a cute little neighborhood market with a terrific local beer/wine/spirit selection. Not cheap, not comprehensive, but fun and friendly, and always has something new and interesting.

Steve F.

Yelp
Awesome food, but it comes at a price. I highly recommend the pizza family deal. Staff is always great. Can't beat the location and convenience.

Edgar B.

Yelp
No way! Avoid at all costs. I'm not sure how you can charge 9.00 for a simple sandwich to begin with. But it ought to taste better than fast food. Crazy and ridiculous. Oh, the pickle was good. But I paid 9 bucks!

Ron B.

Yelp
Never again for us. My wife went in to have steaks cut extra thick and two of the men behind the counter were so putoff by what they thought was a rediculous request that one of them dropped a 10 to 15# piece of RAW BEEF ON THE FLOOR to all the customers disgust.................................hE then picked it up and PUT ON TOP of 4 or 5 other pc of raw beef on the back counter YUK........................she went running out of the strore never to return
google avatar

Caroline S.

Yelp
Great food can be found at this little market in Clarkson. The staff is very friendly and knows most of the regular customers by their first names. I feel this adds a big touch to personability creating a level of comfort at a local convenience store. They accept credit cards as a form of payment for convenience. They take call ahead orders for pizza and other great food that they offer so that you do not have to wait there for your order to be filled...great store!!!
google avatar

Malorie Z.

Yelp
Huge selection of beer, liquor and wines. I've had plenty of the food from there and we haven't been disappointed yet. They will let you taste before you buy so that's always a plus. I also like that they sell food items from locals- cookies, honey etc. Yes, it's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. We stop in to shop about once a month.
google avatar

Kelly O.

Yelp
This is a great market to buy some great wines and unique beers, good cuts of meat, homemade salads and sides, interesting sauces and unique items. Some of the wines are priced a little high compared to some of the other local places, but it is a great selection, nonetheless. As for their steaks, they are amazing! Around $20 for my boyfriend and I to each have a Delmonico, and totally worth it. The staff is helpful and friendly. I will definitely return!
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
What could be a great little market for its community is actually a major disappointment. They carry some good stuff, but it is poorly stocked, poorly run, and most of all, filthy. I could imagine seeing dirty floors, ceiling tiles, and walls in a gas station bathroom, but in a market? No Thanks. I will find the wonderful thick cut New York steaks somewhere friendlier and cleaner.
google avatar

jan t.

Yelp
Great wine and craft beer selection. Lots of charm and a friendly staff. Their catering is superb! We ordered the tenderloin for Christmas dinner and it was done to perfection and served with a delicious horseradish sauce. can't wait to try more!
google avatar

sally k.

Yelp
Rudy's has great gourmet foods. They have a really good Sweet Rub, Yellow Dog Sweet Shake. Black Dog Belly Rub.

Stacey M.

Yelp
Great selection in the back deli. Slightly over priced but friendly staff and delicious food. Excellent selection of wine! Such a great place in downtown.
google avatar

Christy F.

Yelp
Nice little shop. I stopped in to grab a drink while at the Taste of Clarkston. I noticed they had a pretty decent wine selection, a nice selection of candy, pre made food that looked decent. While you can not do your grocery shopping here, you can grab some good quality items. I think I also spied McClure's pickle potato chips. They had a good selction of beverages too....like my beloved grape aloe drink that I get at supermercados and san pelligrino limoata in glass bottles. I did get overcharged 50 cents on my soda...but I'm not one to bring that up.
google avatar

Evie B.

Yelp
What a cute lil market!!! Do NOT go in here on an empty tummy or if you are waiting for your turn at Union Woodshop! : ) LOL When you walk in, you are immediately hit with the smell of a fresh made pizza smell or baked bread... YUM It's a cramped lil' place. Lots of unique items. Wine on one side of the store, beer and other liquor on the other side of the store. I actually found a banana bread beer!!!! They have a small lil deli section at the rear of the store. From what i could see, it looked like homemade items such as lasagna, meatballs, ziti, pasta salads...These mom and pop places are the places we need to keep in business. Lots of character and the comfort of home : )

Kaley S.

Yelp
My husband and I recently went to Rudy's to grab a quick deli sand which. We were so surprised at how delicous they were!! Everything is carved to order and even though the prices are a tad high it's totally worth it! We even went back for another sandwhich two days later. Each time we went we tried something new and everything was fantastic. They also have a very wide selection of deli items, it's fun to go and wander. We will definitely be repeat customers.
