A Guide to Royal Thai Cuisine

"Singled out alongside Blue Elephant, this restaurant is presented as offering genuine Royal Thai cuisine to the general public—an accessible taste of traditions otherwise available to very few." - Chawadee Nualkhair

An authentic Thai restaurant that serves traditional flavors foreigners can comfortably enjoy. We ordered 11 dishes and 5 desserts for a welcome dinner for 6 Korean business partners, and everything was simply amazing. Must-order dishes: • Appetizer platter (orderves) • Crispy tiny shrimps (กุ้งฝอยทอด) • Black sticky rice with coconut cream (ข้าวเหนียวถั่วดำ) All dishes were beautifully presented, flavorful, and well-balanced — a perfect introduction to Thai cuisine for our guests. Note: The restaurant has limited parking space compared to its size, so if you’re coming as a big group, it’s best to arrange transportation in advance.

We went for lunch at this restaurant. The history of the house is interesting and it has character and nice decor. The food was good but not the best we’ve had. The cost was 2-3 times higher than all other places we went to during our stay and for what we ate, we failed to justify this. Given the choice there is in Bangkok, I wouldn’t return or recommend.

I was recommended Mallika by a front desk manager at Hyatt Place. It seems to be a common occurrence based off other patrons who stayed at other Western brand hotels. Let's start with the food. Nothing was bad, nothing was great. I tried the Pad Thai, Pork Neck, and Som Tum Thai. I've had better papaya salads in the states for what it's worth. Pad Thai was probably the best thing I tried but strangely no peanuts in the dish. What threw me off was the obviously tourists targeted pricing. The Pad Thai was 300 baht. So was the pork neck meat. On top of that, there's a 10% tax and a 7% VAT added on at the end of the meal. I really felt like I was eating in America and not Thailand based on the pricing. Service was good and the atmosphere is non-existent. The interior is quite dated and whilst the day I visited was a rainy day, the restaurant was mostly empty except for a couple of other tourist tables. The menu is also gigantic, looks like an encyclopedia, and is hard to navigate. I'd stay away if I were you. There's much better options in Sukhumvit that won't squeeze your wallet and will most certainly taste better.

Really delicious food and drinks! The style of the restaurant is just outstanding. I really loved the old thai style. The choices for a menu were a lot. You get a full book full of menus, never seen before. The prices are really low for that high quality in my eyes. I would highly recommend this!

I was advised by Marriott hotel staff about this restaurant. It turned out to be the best Thai food I have had in the past few years, great service too and super reasonable price. Will definitely go back when I am in Bangkok again.

Was recommended by my friend and have returned for a second time. The food is amazing with a huge array of selection. Loved the pork neck and the Coconut Pudding as well as the fish. The lemongrass tea is really fragrant and refreshing as well. Would definitely come back again on my next trip.

My wife saw this place on YouTube (เสือร้องไห้) and told me they have their own garden. The pad CU was one of the best I’ve ever had: the veggies were perfectly crunchy & fresh & it wasn’t overpowering. When I have had cheaper pod CU, it’s hard to explain, but it tasted “cheap”. This one tasted like perfectly cooked luxury pod. CU, if that makes sense. The Fried tofu was also perfectly cooked, it was crispy on the outside and a bit soft on the inside & so not oily I thought it might’ve been made with an air fryer. The decorations are amazing, a great spot for private functions and weddings, but not enough parking for that, so take a taxi & The food was really really good. My wife said this is the best soup I’ve ever had for this kind of soup. We will definitely come back

Bangkok never ceases to amaze me in the number and variety of excellent restaurants that are on offer to locals and visitors alike. In over 200 days of visits to the city over the past 10 years, I thought I had tried every style of Thai cuisine in the various neighborhoods surrounding Sukhumvit and the BTS line. But today, a local Thai friend introduced me to what they described as ancient royal Thai cuisine at the Ruen Mallika on Soi Setthi Thawi Sap near its intersection with Sukhumvit Soi 22. It is by far the best overall Thai dining experience that I have ever had. The restaurant exterior is a bit hidden in an off-street, sheltered location and the modest entrance belies the wonderful atmosphere and excellent dining experience that you will enjoy inside. As you are guided through the restaurant to your table, you feel like you are wandering through an ancient, royal Thai courtyard. Everything is elegant and speaks to Thai tradition and culture. Each menu is a three inch thick album containing a page with a large photo and description for each item on the menu. As you page through the menu everything looks and sounds so yummy that you really have a hard time choosing. My Thai friend properly advised that we needed to over order our dishes so that we could sample and enjoy a variety of the wonderful tastes and flavors on offer. We ended up ordering four separate dishes to share including a crispy rice cake/peanut sauce appetizer, sweet and sour chicken soup, papaya salad, and a crispy pork with curry sauce. Everything was so fresh, flavorful and well prepared. We also ordered rice and a berry tea to accompany the meal. We were fully stuffed about 3/4 of the way through our meal but got a second wind after a few cups of tea and were somehow able to consume our entire order. An outstanding surprise was that our entire meal in this wonderful place only cost 1790 baht. (Not street food prices but about half the cost of some other fancy Thai restaurants that I have experienced.)
