The Best Apple Cider Donuts In Upstate New York - New York - The Infatuation

"If you’re coming from New York City, Rulf’s is a bit of a schlep, but it’s also the best orchard in the North Country. Their doughnuts are deeply spicy, and you can get them with or without a cinnamon sugar coating. You can also get your apple cider doughnut split open and stuffed with vanilla ice cream. This is one of our favorite fall desserts in the entire state of New York. We may or may not have taken a five-hour drive from the city just to eat this while surrounded by peak Adirondack fall foliage." - carina finn koeppicus

Google
Great place for the whole family! Fun for kids with a playground, sandbox, and the chance to feed the animals. There are also plenty of plants, seasonal activities like apple picking and pumpkins, and a very clean store with lots of unique items. The bakery is a must-visit with plenty of delicious options. Highly recommend!

Google
Definitely a well-run establishment. The endless acres of orchards with the Adirondack Mountains in the background is picturesque. The selection in their store is superb and they offer breakfast and lunch options as well. There is a well kept petting zoo and playground area for children.

Google
A store that sells a lot of items. Also sells fresh baked goods like cakes, donuts and cookies. You can buy plants, maple syrup, honey, and many other items here. The staff is friendly and helpful. It would be nice to be able to sample some of the sauces, dressing, and jams/jelly items.

Google
Great place to pick pumpkins!! I can't stand the service at the counter, they are so unpleasant in the store, but worth putting up with for the donuts and goodies.

We have been going here all the way from Suffolk LI since COVID started. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. They allowed us to go pumpkin picking and apple picking. My son picked a pumpkin that must of weighed 60 lbs, but same cost $10 and my daughter got a reasonable sized one. Their pumpkin bread is the best I ever had and their Blueberry pies were great as well! Thank you for a great afternoon, although the weather wasn't the best but you could only control so much!

Google
We felt the need to check them out we bought their jalapeño mustard from our camp store and it was very tasty. Sweet little farm store some crafts. Vegetables, grass-fed beef, and the bakery. We bought a tea towel and a mini apple crumble pie. They also have apple cider donuts 4 flavors.

Google
Great place for petting animals, playing on the kids playground picking apples, getting pumpkins and delicious produce and baked goods in their great little farm store at Rulf's Orchard. We got the cider and sugared donuts and went and got apples with our daughter and 1 yr old granddaughter. It was her first visit and hopefully not her last so we can make wonderful memories.

Google
An amazing orchard with many possible activities for people of all ages. We went at the end of September and one could pick apples, pumpkins, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Additionally, there is a corn maze and a petting zoo. You can also buy their produce alongside delicious baked goods including cider donuts. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Not charging 100 dollars for photographers to take pictures at your orchard, it's free advertising and that never used to be something you guys did. Also how can we "go through Amanda " when Amanda takes over a month to respond to an email. I think Mr Rulf would be disappointed...

Yelp
Locally owned family business. Started by Bob Rulf himself, he created such an amazing atmosphere for people of any age. Between the orchards, pick-your-own strawberries, petting zoo, and other events, it's sure to be a great time. There's also great bakers who make the best baked goods. Want the best apple cider donut in town? Go to Rulf's. Also pair with their homemade apple cider and yummy honey sticks!

Yelp
Their bakery section is on point. Ever since Cake Placid closed I've been searching for a peanut butter and chocolate dessert. Today, Rulf's had two different brownie bars ($4/per). One was peanut butter and the other was chocolate chip cookie dough. YUM. They're large, heavy, and perfect. The brownie is literally perfect and the peanut butter mix and bittersweet chocolate topping were icing on the cake. Their pumpkin bars with icing ($2/per) are always moist, tender, and not too sweet. They recently had a fudgey chocolate oat cookie that my husband loved. I wish I had taken pictures but I ate it too quickly.

Yelp
One of my favorite orchards to visit yearly! First off, come hungry because they actually have really good food and lots of options. I personally loved the breakfast quesedilla because it was HUGE and the eggs were cooked fresh. Their desserts are a whole other thing though. I have a major sweet tooth and I have a very hard time choosing just a few because they're all SO good and cheap. You can go at various times through-out the year to pick everything from strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, apples and pumpkins. The tractor rides and farm animals are great for kids too. Highly recommend making the drive out here, you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
I cannot believe my husband and I have never been here before! What an awesome place! We did the blueberry/strawberry/raspberry picking and the fruit was outstanding! The girls in the trailer who helped us were so sweet and friendly! I got home and made the most delicious blueberry raspberry tart! We also bought candles and an apple cider doughnut. The homemade pies look amazing! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
They make the most amazing apple cider. It was so good I almost drank an entire half gallon in one day! Not to mention their delicous fresh picked or pick your own apples, cider donuts, pettimg zoo for the kids, wagon rides , pumpkins, pick your own , snack bar etc. It's always a pleasure going there.

Yelp
Love this place. The overall experience is top notch. Great pastries, gift ideas and family friendly especially in the fall. Great location right off the highway. It's a must stop for us.

Yelp
Mr Rulfs has come a long way since I first went here as a child. Back then they just had a bunch of apple trees all lined up in a row, some good apple cider doughnuts that they'd just started to distribute, and these great lollipops that I'll never forget. Some 20 years later, Mr Rulfs is still alive and kicking, and has a lot more going on. Selection: Gone are the days of just a few types of apples and the occasional tomatoes and ears of corn in a roadside stand. Nowadays Mr Rulfs had a pretty good operation going with some 15 types of apples, pumpkins, strawberries, blueberries, squashes, tomatoes and peppers. The full list on the website, and everything is seasonal. If you want fresh Rulfs produce, most of the time you can find in local grocery stores (I'm pretty sure even Price Chopper sells his apples) but heading out to the farm is the best idea. They also have several greenhouses set up now. You can get all sorts of flowers and plants and gardening tools and mulch. It's definitely a fun look around, although go early in the season, by early August everything's pretty picked over. In the holidays you can get your trees and wreaths from Mr Rulfs, too. If I remember they might even have firewood for those with no ax in their shed. The store and bakery sells everything from Vermont maple syrup, honey, jams, pies, breads, candy apples, carmel apples, doughnuts and produce. It's a heavenly smell in the cozy barn-like shop. You can't go wrong, and you'll always leave with something good. Venue: What first started out as a dairy farm with a few acres, Mr Rulfs Orchard has developed into a grand farm with over 150 acres of produce, seven greenhouses and a grand store. The apple orchards are open for all to walk through, and you can pick your own strawberries, blueberries and pumpkins in season. When heading down Bear Swam Road, you can't miss it. It's huge. And it's open all year long, so you have no reason not to stop by if you're in the area. We always used to drive out from Plattsburgh, but people as far as Saranac and Tupper Lake, Messina and Lake Placid head up for apples and doughnuts. Hot apple cider in the winter is the best, so try it out. You can wander for hours or head in for quick shopping trip. They always have events going on, and you'll always find nice people who will help you out. It's scout's honor up here in the North Country, so don't go stealing any apples off the trees, but if you want a snack while you're shopping around, no one will object. Just make sure you don't walk out without paying.

Yelp
I have always enjoyed a trip to Rulfs whether to buy plants, fresh produce or have lunch in their cafe. But I won't be going back until there is a vaccine for covid. Not one employee was wearing a mask. Some had them but weren't wearing them other didn't even have them. Very disappointed.

Yelp
This was a nice find. Farm fresh produce. They also have great breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. I had the breakfast quesadilla which was yummy and filling. My bf got a bagel egg sandwich which was also good. Worth the stop for fresh food!

Yelp
This is as cute and ornate of a local orchard you are going to get. Do yourself a favor and buy some apple cider and cider donuts. YUM! They also feature fun things for kids during the season, which is nice for families. You can't go wrong going to any local orchard in the area, so its hard to advocate any one over the other. Rulf's does have a great selection of maple and apple related items (bread, muffins, candy, etc) which I haven't seen in many other orchards though, which makes it stand out.

Yelp
Love going here but the employees can be a bit rude most of the time unfortunately! Baked goods and donuts are the best! Skip the lunch specials, their over priced and never good! The breakfast quesadilla is the best item on the breakfast!

Yelp
Went here to pick up some corn on the cob since we were camping in the area. Great selection of craft foods from pies, jellies, maple syrup and even homemade ice cream!

Yelp
This pick-your-own orchard offers delicious apples and all kinds of berries throughout the summer season. Their fruits & vegetables are first rate. But sadly their farm stand baked goods are less memorable than their fresh fare. We bought donuts and a small pie there recently. Both LOOKED amazing. But appearances can be deceiving. The donuts were "nothing to write home about" and the scrumptious-looking pie had more "filler" (possibly chunky applesauce) than whole fruits & fresh berries. So disappointed! And the pie was very overpriced for it's mediocre quality. A little 6" pie for over $7 ??!!

Yelp
Great place! Great people! Great apples! We used to live in Plattsburgh and now whenever we visit we go to Rulfs for apples to bring home and doughnuts to eat immediately! They are the best!
