Rural Ramen Bar

My fiancé and I visited Rural Ramen on New Year’s Day while spending a couple of days in San Francisco, and it was a highlight of our trip. The ramen was absolutely delicious—while we’re no experts, this was hands down the best tonkotsu ramen we’ve ever had. The ambience was warm and pleasant, and the service was excellent from start to finish. We also tried the flavored nigiri in strawberry and pineapple, which were a fun and tasty surprise, along with the shrimp tempura, which was perfectly cooked. We’d definitely come back and highly recommend this spot! 🍜

Great ramen, quick service and chill jazz music. I’ve been on a mission to hit all of SFs ramen places and this one is very good. I got the Tonkatsu Ramen and it was creamy, rich, and it had a huge portion of meat (more than any other ramen place I’ve been to) the slices were thick and tender. The noodles are flavorful and had the perfect texture. I also ordered the geso karage, which was pretty decent but I think a bit overcooked (more chewiness than I’d like). Would definitely come again.

First time here with my wife and she has never had Japanese cuisine and she loved it. The ambient is calm and it's definitely a vibe. The waiter is very nice and welcoming.

Was looking up ramen and we decided on this place. The noodles are my favorite part of this deliciousness soup! The coconut was perfect too. Will have to come back and try different ones. My friend who is vegan liked it too. Fast and friendly service too.

This was a great place to get some ramen. The mood inside is really sweet. They have a soft purple lights on that really help set a mood. The green tea was very good. My sister and I both loved it. The ramen was hot, filling, and very tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed the notes of ginger in my Tonkotsu ramen. The pork belly tasted like it was seasoned and seared on a grill and only added more flavor to the ramen. Definitely recommend if you're in the area.

The BEST ramen we’ve had!! Broth was perfectly seasoned and all Ingredients tasted fresh. Salad and appetizers were also very delicious. Waiter was friendly and attentive. Lunch special was a great deal.

coming around 1pm on a weekday, there was little to no wait for a table! the server was very sweet and respectful, managing the entire restaurant front by himself. i got the tonkotsu ramen & was pleasantly surprised at how much chashu they gave. each piece was thick & tender -- they did not skimp on the toppings! the soup was also flavorful, tying the whole dish together. one part of the dish that i felt lacked was the texture of noodles. i wish it had a bit more of a chew to it, just because it felt more on the side of "too soft". the noodles also didn't seem to absorb much of the soup's flavor so rendered the noodles itself tasteless. there are a good amount of tables inside, big & small, not too loud, with a small LED colored light at the front. great place to stop by if you're in the area!

We came here for a quick bite before a show at the Masonic. I ordered the Tori Paitan as not many places have this style of ramen. What I got was quite disappointing. The broth didn't taste like any chicken Paitan I've previously had. Instead it tasted more miso. I sorta confirmed it after tasting my wife's spicy miso. The broth was almost identical minus the spicy. The protein was also a letdown. It came with 3 pieces of chicken breast that lacked any flavor. The restaurant has nice decors. The waiter was friendly and brought our food promptly.

I had a pretty bad experience sometime ago, when I dined at this restaurant. Had ordered the Veg Ramen and the Japanese curry After I had eaten a little bit of the ramen, I noticed a bug in the ramen and brought it to the server's attention. He first tried to brush it off, and later just mentioned that it may be from the veggies they got. I wasn't going to eat the rest of the ramen after this. I expected he would waive off the price of the ramen. Any other restaurant, where I had such as situation, i.e. finding things that are not food (bugs, hair, plastic, metal) in the dish, has always waived off the dish Instead , he 1st insisted that he would just give me a partial discount since I had already eaten some of it. When I kept insisting, that the ramen should be waived off , he made a RACIST comment, trying to suggest how he sees Indian people do this often i.e. make up problems with the food to get free food. So the staff of this restaurant does not bother to clean the ingredients before cooking them and then tries to blame to customers about it. Not sure if the server even works there anymore. But not going to visit this restaurant after such an experience.

We came to this area for a concert and saw that they had some tables open to dine in quick before the show. I got the Tonkatsu ramen and this was a hearty broth with really rich meat and an egg. The noodles were good and the broth had some subtle flavor though it felt extra fatty. I could have done with more robust flavor but it was still good. They give a good portion too. The restaurant is nice inside and staff were nice.

This was our first time visiting this ramen shop! When we walked into the restaurant, we were immediately greeted by the staff and said we can sit wherever we liked. The restaurant was tiny, but luckily we were able to get an open table. Because of the pink lights and a dim setting, the place felt more like a night out, bar vibe- great place to eat and drink! The staff provided excellent service and the food was served very quickly after we placed our order! We got: 10/10 Tori Karaage: I liked this a lot! The chicken was juicy and tender, the batter was crispy and not overdone. Having the pepper is a great compliment to this dish. I'd order this again! 8/10 Shoyu Ramen: I love the portions. I felt like it was enough for me to feel full. I also loved how fresh and crunchy the bok choy tasted! The pork chashu slices were thick cut and delicious. I think it's an okay dish as the ramen noodle was a bit too chewy (maybe needs to cook it a bit longer?) and the broth was good, but I didn't really taste..much flavor. It was an okay broth! 7/10 Chicken Katsu curry: Love the fry on the Chicken Katsu! Portions were okay. The curry was a bit too sweet for my liking and I wish the chicken katsu wasn't thin. Overall a good restaurant! I'd come back to try their tonkatsu ramen!

My expectations were high given the current 4.5 stars rating but the food was just mehhh. The crab wonton were balls of cream cheese fried served with a honey dip. I did not taste anything else so they would have been ok for dessert. The tuna on my tuna poke had no flavor and the nori sheets seemed a bit old, although not quite stale. My friend had Tonkotsu and was not impressed either. The place smelled like a flea market (it was a rainy day and early evening so there wasn't much cooking going on). I went to the bathroom to wash my hands, the door was wide open and the paper towel holder was visibly dusty so I deliberately did not look around.

We found rural ramen bar because we wanted something warm on a rainy day and we were not disappointed! The spicy miso was super spicy without being salty and the tori paitan was sooo creamy. They were perfect to order together! The ramen portions are huge and the pork and chicken chashu in the ramen was giant too. I've never seen chashu that big before lol The poke salad was fresh and the chicken katsu curry was juicy and crispy too. My partner thought the curry was a little sweet but I thought it was just right and helped calm the spiciness from the spicy ramen lol The staff was very friendly and the food came out quickly. The perfect ramen spot!

While walking around SF, I stumbled upon Rural Ramen and decided to give it a try, so glad I did! I had the Chicken Katsu Curry, which was absolutely delicious with great flavor. It came with a small soup, which wasn't my favorite, but the main dish more than made up for it. I also tried the gyoza, pretty good! The staff was super friendly and the food came out quickly. I'll definitely be back for the Katsu Curry and can't wait to try their ramen next time!

When the word ramen is in the name of your restaurant and the ramen isn't good there's a problem. Went for lunch today the restaurant was empty the whole time we were there-- no fun to eat on an empty restaurant and now I know why. My spicy miso ramen wasn't bad but nothing particularly good about it either. My husband got the konkatsu ramen and it was awful. Noodles were weird and undercooked and nothing like ramen noodles. Nothing much in the bowl but bad noodles and seaweed. The pork belly was ok. Waiter was nice and it was fun to see the cable cars rolling by but we are definitely sticking to Japantown for ramen and wouldn't go back.

Great option for ramen on the outskirts of Chinatown located along the cable car line. I came here with a friend and their friend on a rainy night. It was pretty full but we were seated quickly. I love the flowers inside! We shared the Crab Wonton to start and things started on a high note. I liked my tonkotsu ramen and my friend said they'd get the spicy miso ramen again. The broth flavor was rich and thick, and I liked the creaminess of the egg and all the toppings.

Unfortunately rural ramen is by far the most unauthentic ramen I've ever had. We got the 2 signature ramen and the 'chicken karage' appetizer. The noodles were subpar, the broth was just ok. The chicken tasted like fried chicken without any seasoning. The worst part was upon entering the restaurant, there was a HUGE aroma of cleaning solution. No other customers were there and we were not greeted or helped by anyone until we waved to get their attention.

Small spot in Chinatown that has been on my radar since it opened. They ran out of chicken, so instead of the karaage, we got the fried squid to start. Good sized app, but I wish the pieces were smaller. Some were quite large and awkward to chew apart. 4/5 I got the spicy miso ramen. The pork was so thick and dry. The noodles were akin to linguine, which I wasn't expecting, and the edamame was a weird addition in my opinion. Broth was on the thicker side, but thankfully not too rich. 3/5 They close at 8, which is early, especially leading into the weekend. The second the waiter came back with our bill (at around 8:05), he abruptly said "We are closed," and we were rushed out. I found this odd only because right next to us was a table of 4 who had just gotten served their food. I totally understand wanting to close up, but we were already wrapping up and there were patrons still eating. His tone left a sour taste in my mouth. Glad I finally checked it off the list, but all things considered, I won't be back, especially since the food was just mid.

Call me crazy, but the best thing at rural ramen isn't the ramen. The crab Rangoon is as good as I've ever had. All the appetizers are probably the highlight to me. Especially the fresh summer roles when you want something light and healthy. Overpriced but the peanut sauce it comes with is next level. The coconut water IN the coconut is a must have. Thai iced tea is surely up to par as well. If you live in the neighborhood it's worth going to every now and then. Wouldn't travel across the city for it though. (4.0 Stars)

Came for lunch today around 11:30am and I was the only one in the restaurant the whole time. I was greeted, seated promptly and handed a menu. I ordered the spicy Miso ramen ($16) which includes homemade noodles, spicy miso broth, chashu pork belly, egg, corn, pickled ginger, bamboo shot and scallions. I asked for medium spicy and it was not spicy at all. I would say everything about the ramen was thick: thick noodles (was a little soggy), thick rich broth, thick chashu pork. It was an ok bowl of ramen if you're hungry because it was quite a bit of noodles and the chashu was not only thick, but huge slices.

Came around 1:30pm on a Friday. Pretty empty but I can see how this place can fill up during peak hours :) We tried the tonkotsu and tori paitan ramen and both were great. The chicken chashu was nice and tender. The noodles were cooked perfectly and were really QQ! Loved how the soup wasn't too heavy and oily. Would totally visit again!

Absolutely delicious ramen and amazing service. We loved all the food. Beware though that the spicy miso is extremely hot. Our server was excellent. Two thumbs up

The ambiance was absolutely lovely, pink led lights and floral arrangements. There are booths, regular tables and bar seating. We ordered the tuna poke, there were notes of sweet from the mango and a crunch from the peanuts. We also ordered the geso karaage (squid) and shrimp tempura, both fried in a light batter. Absolutely loved the crab wonton, was so crunchy and gooey with so many flavors inside. For our entrees, we got spicy miso ramen and chicken katsu. The ramen was flavorful and the noodles are handmade in the restaurant. The chicken katsu was crispy and tender and came with miso soup and rice. Overall experience here was great!

Came here on a Sunday evening and we chose to sit inside. Bad choice because there were flies inside the restaurant so -2 stars for that. Pretty disgusting imo. However!!! The food itself was delicious. Service: 10/10. Our waiter was quick, attentive, and friendly. Food: 10/10 Enoki tempura- SO good. It was seasoned really well, and the tempura was SO savory. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! The sauce that came with it made the tempura taste even better. You have to get this! Spicy miso ramen- I didn't see the adjustment level for spiciness, but what we were served had a really nice kick to it. The noodles are thicker and stickier than typical ramen noodles, which I was a fan of. The broth was really thick and creamy, although a tad bit too oily. Chasu pieces were thick and tender, yum. This bowl was shared between the two of us, and the serving was perfect. Can't wait to come back and try their other items! But PLEASE. Do something about the flies in the restaurant because it was disgusting.

Walked here from the Embarcadero on a whim because we found out there was no wait. Rural Ramen Bar is a hop, skip, and a jump away from Chinatown, so it's fairly accessible, but if you're trying to park here--no. Anyway, it was a Saturday afternoon and I ordered their tonkatsu ramen. It was a solid bowl--nothing to really write home about aside from the fact that the slices of tonkatsu used were meatier than what I'm accustomed to, so I appreciated that. $17 a bowl is a little much for "fine" ramen though, so I can't really say this place is worth it other than the fact that you won't have to wait nearly as long as any of the other popular spots in town.

Rural ramen bar is so good, that here I am sitting in a ramen restaurant in SoCal,reminiscing over good times with rural. This places ramen is next level, the flavor is so rich and everything is so fresh. Every dime spent here is one well spent. Miss you rural you my one and only fr.

Small ramen shop with fast service and passable fare. A quick, affordable option for those who want ramen now. Since I was going to a show at the Masonic, I figured I'd pick something nearby to eat, and this restaurant is certainly one of the restaurants nearby. While it was pretty positively reviewed, I personally left a bit disappointed. The geso karaage had some oomph but tasted a little gritty and didn't go down too well. The tonkotsu ramen did have amazing chashu, which was the sole savior of the dish, but the broth was incredibly flat and salty, with no richness of flavor, and the noodles felt rather cheap both in texture and taste. I'd come back if I were in a bind and wanted to be seated and served relatively quickly.

A really solid ramen spot right on the edge of Chinatown! I discovered Rural Ramen Bar through Yelp, and with all the good reviews, I had high expectations. My friend and I both ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen. The broth is definitely on the heavier side, but it had a rich, creamy pork flavor and was surprisingly not too salty or too oily. Combined with the chewy noodles and nice, fatty pork belly, this was a super filling but good quality bowl of ramen (extra points for the A+ presentation!!). Service was quick, and despite the small restaurant interior, the ambiance was nice. They also have cute bar seating outside. Would definitely visit again to try out some of their other dishes!

Spicy Miso Ramen ($17) Soup base was extremely creamy, so I was glad that the broth was also spicy to alleviate the creaminess. The meal felt quite heavy and filling -- the juicy and also fatty meat was delicious but didn't help change that feeling at all! It also had bamboo shoots, which were a nice touch. I ended up struggling to finish this, as it was quite filling.

Delish ramen!! Would recommend to all my friends coming by for a visit. Out of my party of 6, 5 of us got the tonkotsu haha and we all loved it. Decor is a little silly... mix between a tiki bar and farm. They have big booths that can accommodate larger parties. Can make reservations in advance also.

Freaking phenomenal. I love , love , love that they had a cute outdoor area! Their park let was super adorable and it faced out so you can people watch ! Huge plus that they're dog friendly so we had our kiddies. We started off with the gesso karaage $8 and the crab wonton $9. The gesso karaage was my favorite . You can tell that the squid was super fresh and it was crispy and the breading was perfect. We rather enjoyed it more that the crab wonton ! It was good but think it needed more of that thick cream cheese texture. We devoured everything though 5/5 For the ramen we ordered the: Tonkotsu: Came with fresh homemade noodles , smoked Kakuni pork belly , egg, pickled ginger ,scallions , bamboo shoots & sesame $17 . I loved that this place doesn't charge for every single Ingredient like all the other places around the Bay Area . The broth was super creamy and flavorful . One giveaway of an amazing ramen is the first sip of the broth. You can tell they had been cooking the broth for hours. Next would be the noodles . It tasted super fresh and had a nice springiness to it ! The Kakuni pork belly was good but I suggest getting the Chasu. It was soo soft it literally melted in my mouth ! The egg was also cooked perfectly! It was creamy and a bit yolky just how a ramen egg should be . 5/5 Service was great and they did a wonderful job with checking in if we needed anything else ! Hands down one of the better ramen spots in the Bay Area ! Will be back !

Very flavorful thick broth. But also a rich taste. I asked for their homemade spicy sauce and it was delicious with my ramen. The noodles were very chewy and thick, which is my kind of ramen noodles.

Rural Ramen had yummy food and quick service, but a few things made this review 4 stars instead of 5. We ordered tori karaage and enoki tempura to start. I was super excited to try the enoki since I've heard good things, but I found it a bit too oily and it was hard to taste the mushrooms outside of the meatier section. The karaage came in a generous portion and was crispy; I would order it again I got the tonkostu ramen and was immediately struck by the presentation. Such photogenic ramen! The broth was outstanding -- rich flavor, a bit creamy almost. The ramen came with three chunks of pork belly, a generous serving but I found the meat a bit too salty, even for ramen. I was also was disappointed by the noodles. They were too soft, soggy almost. We were dining in person and only 1 of 3 small groups there, so I'm not sure what happened. Still, with fast service, pretty presentation, and delicious ramen broth, I'd be back to give this place a second try.

A neighborhood gem! Delicious Tonkotsu Ramen with rich pork broth, great chew on house-made noodles, three generous pieces of pork belly, yummy stewed half egg, mushrooms, scallions and pickled ginger. Very attentive and friendly service as well. Will definitely be back with family and friends to try other items from the menu.

I randomly found this place because I heard that they make their own noodles daily so I decided to give it a try. My friend and I showed up around 2 PM and the waitress let us know that they were closing at 2:30 she gave us the option to stay until then and dine in or order for take out which I thought was very sweet of her since they were literally about to close. Moving onto the food, it came out very quickly, and the moment I laid eyes onto the bowl of Ramen I was too stunned to speak. This broth itself was the most flavorful Tonkotsu broth I have ever tried and don't even get me started on the hard boiled egg that had incredible flavor, as well as the pork. Just exquisite. What an amazing spot and I can't wait to go back. The ambience was very calming and I waitress was phenomenal and I appreciate her so much.

4.5 stars for a relatively off-the-radar ramen shop. We got really lucky with parking, and there wasn't a wait at all (unlike places like Mensho's). We happily were seated and got to ordering. Whenever I go to a new ramen place, I usually go for the most popular ramen ooooorr the tonkotsu. Since the tonkotsu is the most popular, I went with that. Overall, a very above-solid bowl of ramen! Broth is good, noodles (could be more but I just like noodles) were good, and everything else came together well. I'd totally come here more if I lived closer-by, but I'm happy to have tried and support this lil rural ramen bar :)

Best ramen i had ever had in town ! This place always be my hidden gem and go to place for ramen their ramen is creamy and so dense but not to creamy that make you feel cheesy! The kakuni pork belly is the chef's kiss for me Will definitely be back !!!! Rural Salad Kakuni Pork Belly Spicy Miso

This place hidden in SF made to my top 3 Ramen spot list in SF. The broth is as creamy as you would expect and the chasu absolutely delicious. I added the house spice for a kick and it was my best decision. Service is fast and location is very low key neighborhood spot. Worth it FOR SURE

Remember all those times you've ordered ramen and halfway through, you've wound up eating all the toppings and meat and still have 1/3 of your noodles left? Well, you won't run into that here because Rural Ramen truly has it down with the optimal ratio of noodles to protein in their ramen bowls. I had the spicy miso ramen and the chashu pork slices were large and decently thick with a hint of char. The egg was a bit closer to a medium (boiled), but a tiny bit in the center was still soft and gooey. The noodles were cooked perfectly with a nice bite to it, and the miso broth was pretty tasty! Not as bold what I've had at marufuku, but still pretty damn good. Friendly and prompt service, I'll definitely be back!

REALLY enjoyed the ramen - I got the Tonkotsu. Lot's of great flavors, and the meat was perfect. However - we also got the Tori Karagge - and it was pretty poor. The meat had lots of sinewy chewy bits in it, and I thought it was way overcooked.

A new ramen entrant on the edge of Chinatown. The ramen is solid, though no Ippudo. But it's the non-ramen dishes which are really sleeper hits here! Tonkotsu Ramen: The first noticeable thing is that there are three huge slices of thick pork belly! Nicely marinated and so tender. The broth itself was a good cloudy color, yielding a rich taste. Though it smelled very "porky", which you don't quite get from places like Ippudo which are also rich but have a smoother and more complex taste. Almost like the opted for lots of fat and dark meat to flavor the broth instead of cooking pork bones for a very very very long time. The noodles were firm and chewy. They went a little overboard with the bamboo shoots in my opinion. Loved the soft-boiled egg with a nice gooey yolk. Overall, an enjoyable bowl of ramen. Rural Signature Noodle: Was actually priced $5 higher than listed on the menus (though they had little paper menus reflecting the new price). But I can kinda see the increased price since it was full of nice seafood: supersized shrimp, scallops and mussels. The noodles were similarly firm and chewy, like in the ramen. They were tossed in a fishy umami spicy sauce with a hint of lemongrass. Felt Thai-ish. As far as seafood-centric dry noodles go, these were pretty darn good!

There were several shrimps, tofu, and an egg, all of which were tasty and added to the dish without being too much. I cannot wait to make my way through the rest of menu of this new neighborhood restaurant. I encourage y'all to try!

We called to check if hrs changed for holidays, & he answered so kindly! Our miso ramen came out quick and was sooo flavorful, everything from the pork belly to the golden egg has its own taste Our views were nice (frisco during winter is so beautiful), inside was super well lite and the perfect spot for a date or eat in meal (o)

My bestie and I, who are avid ramen eaters, decided to try Rural Ramen Bar after seeing all the high praises here on Yelp. This was one of the few times Yelp has led me astray...no idea how this place has a 5 star rating. At best, this is 4 stars for DC level ramen; 3 stars for Bay Area ramen. The ramen doesn't even have ramen noodles!! It's a Thai owned restaurant, which is perfectly fine, but this is not authentic ramen.

Went again to Rural Ramen, and the quality is still there. This time we had the shishito peppers, Spicy Miso Ramen, and of course the Rural Signature Noodle. This isn't your normal ramen bar as they have many different options and really unique dishes. Give it a try!

Decent ramen in the city. I initially went to Chinatown for dim sum but it's like a mad town there so I decided to change. It's a chilly day, so it's perfect for slurping piping hot ramen. Not the best ramen in the Bay Area but it's ok. Pork slices are flavorful, but slices are too thin. Toppings are good, seasoned egg is decent. Noodles are house made which is good but it's not a good fit for Japanese ramen. It would suit Chinese noodles better. The broth is rich and creamy without overpowering anything; however, I could see that it could be too creamy for some. Overall, it's a B score. For $19 (including tax), I would expect more: thicker pork slices, thinner noodles, and at least a full egg.

Stopped by this place for lunch. We had the Tonkatsu ramen and Karaage. The breading outside is super crispy; however, the chicken itself is a bit too gingery, not my fav. And one piece of chicken was undercooked in the middle. The Tonkatsu ramen was good, not great. The broth is thick, but the flavor was kinda flat. The noodles are good though, firm and chewy. Service was vey good. Overall, a solid ramen spot if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

Terrible. Two of us had the spicy miso ramen lunch special and the other two had the tonkatsu ramen special. Food - bleh! Appetizers included with special: Sishito peppers- overly salty. Karage chicken- dry and tasteless Ramen noodles tasted like cold spaghetti noodles in the spicy miso broth. Chashu piece was overcooked and dry. Two of us could not finish the meal as it tasted mediocre. Service: poor. Not sure if language or general communication barrier. The lady was clueless, slow and seemed quite confused. Overall, we do NOT recommend this place. Much better authentic ramen places exist elsewhere. Instant noodles taste much better. The price was too much for the lack of quality and authenticity. It used to be a Thai restaurant at this location and that food was much better. Ambiance was okay. Mostly empty.

07.01.2022 | 6:45pm Location: we parallel parked on Powell street with minimal issues. Looks to be street parking only. There is outdoor parklet seating available. Service/Wait: the restaurant was empty upon arrival and started to fill up midway into our meal. There was only one server, but he was very nice and prompt despite taking care of multiple tables. Food: * Tonkotsu Ramen ($17.50): the tonkotsu broth was so creamy and different from any other ramen place I tried, but it at times lacked flavor due to the high quantity of cream component. The smoked kakuni pork belly was so delicious and melted in my mouth. The egg was slightly overcooked. * Spicy Miso Ramen ($17): the spicy miso broth is definitely spicier than I expected. The edamame was a nice touch. The char siu pork belly was also good. The homemade noodles had a thicker texture than regular Japanese ramen and was more chewy, but nevertheless tasted great. Overall a solid choice for ramen if you're looking for broths that are slightly different than that of regular Japanese ramen.

Holy smokes - the food was worth the slight jog down the hill from our hotel. Ordered the miso ramen and pad Thai with shrimp. Very generous portions and tasted so good! Was ready to go and was a perfect meal on a cold wet rainy day.

We ate at the Rural Ramen bar on the day of the Warriors Parade/Juneteenth. It wasn't too busy but had a steady stream of patrons coming to dine. I had the Tonkatsu Ramen and few of the friends had various other dishes. The portion size of very reasonable as was the price. I liked that they had the thicker size noodle, with two decent size cuts of Chashu, with the different types of veggies (that is listed on the menu. The broth was creamy and flavorful. I'm glad to say that I did not have "after effect" feeling if msg or an urgency to drink water. I would definitely come back again!
