17 Essential Restaurants in Marin County

"The mother ship of this Marin-grown bakery is at Marin Country Mart, with lines out the door on days both sunny and drippy thanks to its rare roast beef and cambozola sandwich, quiche with gruyere and butternut squash, and all manner of bread and pastries. Avocado toast on campagne bread or one of the huge chocolate croissants are available at all four Mairn locations." - Christina Mueller

Google
Unprofessional and unfriendly service. Lost my order which happens, no problem, but then they made me prove that I had paid for the order by showing them the receipt on my phone. The guy took my phone from me and saw that I had paid but said there was no order. I had ordered a few minutes earlier at the counter! Not online! There were only 4 customers in the bakery at 2:00 pm. I then had to say, well either I get a refund or you make the sandwich. He went in the back and brought someone to the counter who took care of it in the least friendly manner imaginable. No apology, no offer to comp my drink or even the wayward sandwich. This all took half an hour. Ridiculously bad service and completely unfriendly.

Google
My search for the best blueberry muffin is almost over. I give their muffins a 9/10. Nice local bakery that’s not too overpriced. They have fresh Quiche and awesome brownies.

Google
Its my 5th time visiting this location. I have to say their pastries are good but the service is not meeting up the expectations at all. I understand we always visited during their busy weekend morning time but the service was incredibly slow, unprofessional, and not friendly. They all looked tired and seemed not liking what they were doing, not very organized in their orders/services as well. I guess the bakery just needs to hire more people, train them better to get prepared for these during peak hours…? Just not giving a good impression on the rustic bakery to the customers….

Google
If you read many of my reviews you know I'm a bakery fan. Life is really about going from one bakery to another and seeing what each does best. My vote for Rustic is their quiche and salad. The baked goods are excellent. Up until today, I would have said that their croissant were not quite as good as Tartine or Arsicault Bakery, but today, all the baked goods and croissant were magnificent. Good coffee.

Google
Grilled Marin Melt Cheese sandwich was delicious. Orange cake was overly sweet for my taste. I arrived after noon and missed all the fresh pastries.

Google
I went to this Rustic Bakery for the first and last time on Magnolia in Larkspur. I ordered a combination of soup and 1/2 sandwich for about $17 plus dollars. The Asian chicken soup was delicious with lots of chicken. As to my sandwich which had about 1.5 slices of thin turkey lettuce and a sauce. It was eating bread. Before I left I decided to get a box of cookies and asked one young man. He said $5.99 and when I got up to pay for the cookies,7.99 I was quoted. The young man was gone and the new cashier, asked me to wait. He came back $7.99. I decided to call the manager and tell him what happened. He seemed concerned and said that they have new staff and thanked me for letting him know. That was it and I believe he could of offered me a baked good the next time. However, there will be no next time.

Google
Between my wife and me we ate four of the turkey baguettes and a mocha. The sandwiches were tasty and a cut above deli fare but certainly didn't justify a $10 price for each sandwich. A quaint place but don't bring your appetite.

Google
Bravo, bravo, bravo... Rustic Bakery is just the best! Fantastic array of menu items and everything is perfect. Best breakfast burritos on the planet and their various salads and sandwiches are amazing. The food is always fresh and prepared perfectly. Our family LOVES Rustic Bakery!

Yelp
So good! Clean food, delicious and well-prepared. Known for their baked goods, I'm also a fan of their salads and sandwiches. Breads and pastries are excellent but sometimes I'm disappointed when my favorite is sold out. That's a reminder to arrive earlier, especially on a weekend. I appreciate that all eat-in food is served on real plates and bowls, with real forks, etc. No plastic or paper. Take-out is in compostable containers. At busy times there can be a wait both in line and for food prep. The work-around is to order ahead on their app.

Yelp
Went there this morning and had their ham and cheese quiche and hot chocolate. The quiche was one of the best I've ever had. The hot chocolate was great also.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
The food is good. The Mediterranean wrap was quite good. Nothing special about the turkey pesto sandwich and it was dry. The quiche was delicious. Best part of the meal was the pickles, tastes like they make them there. Pricey little beehive.

Yelp
If you want the best quality pastries around, rustic has you covered! I use them for work catering on occasion and they are always a hit. The restaurant is located in a cute little mall (The Marin County Mart) and has indoor/outdoor seating. It's always pretty busy, but moves quick. There soups and sandwiches are always a great option for lunch as well as the salads. There is not a bad item on the menu!

Yelp
Love rustic but the doordash for this location hasnt worked for like a month. Tried ordering an iced latte & no matter what you do, it says "select portion size" and it's not an option. I have probably tried on 4 separate occasions.

Yelp
Excellent Turkey club sandwich.just the right ratios of bread, meat and condiments. Very friendly service

Yelp
We love Rustic Bakery and its high-quality food! Their entire team is exceptional, a testament to their management's hands-on approach. We are frequent customers and miss this place when we are away, even when we were in Paris! The French can learn a thing or two from these guys!

Yelp
Cute bakery/vibe near Marin mall We ordered ginger scone and scrambled egg avo toast ) good) and egg / chorizo burrito ( too much chorizo and bland)

Yelp
Nice little bakery/cafe. My sister lives up the hill so it's super close by. Nice selection of pastries ( we came during the week- weekends may be a different story) and a nice menu of breakfast items, sandwiches, quiche, 2 soups of the day, and 1/2 sandwich-soup combo. The soup sandwich combo was the best I think. Hubby liked his turkey emmentaler sandwich which was on a roll. Cousin got an avocado toast with thick slices of avo. They also have a selection of boxed cookies and sweet treats for sale. Nice and casual with some tables inside. If eating in, they bring the items to your table.

Yelp
The Almond croissant has gone down in quality. It is much smaller and much less flavorful I have been ordering almond croissants for years and was very disappointed today when I had one I hope they improve soon

James S.

Yelp
Food is off and on - I love the sandwiches but at times the bread is not fresh. Service is excellent, ambiance always a delight.

Yelp
This is for the Rustic Bakery on Magnolia Ave in Larkspur (NOT the one in Larkspur Landing/Marín Country Mart.) My first time here. Asked for the one scone in the case. Label said "apricot and almond." While waiting for my coffee, bit into scone which was salty, not sweet. Closer inspection revealed a cheese, corn and jalapeño scone. Waited in line to exchange. No scones left so I got a cinnamon roll. Tasty but a bit dry (at 10:30 AM.) Went to bathroom to wash sugar off my hands. Room was filthy. If this is how they keep the bathroom up, what does that say about the kitchen? I'm giving it a 2, only because the personnel were pleasant.

Yelp
Nice place in Larkspur Landing. Outdoor seating is nice with umbrellas Lots of customers always specially on a Saturday during the farmers market. Seasonal selections But regular menu is good. First 6 sandwiches only for the +soup or +salad combo. The bread here is good. Sandwiches are excellent. Got the 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 salad. Excellent!

Yelp
be careful, they are keeping their prices the same, but giving you less of your food. I've always ordered a granola yogurt parfait. this item had nothing of yogurt in the cup and only like 2-4 pieces of fruit in the cup, when I use to see this 16 oz cup much more fuller to the top and with plenty more fruit in it. keep in mind I told the cashier I regularly get the item here and said it's always been like this. makes no sense. too pricey for getting half of what they use to give out for same price.

Beau N.

Yelp
Quick bike ride then stop by for the quiche! Also have other pastries and coffee stuff.

Emma T.

Yelp
Love love love the coffee and all the pastries! Ordered many things off the menu and never been disappointed.

Atman K.

Yelp
Santos was excellent. Great service, they did a awesome job. We had allergies in our group and they handled our needs professionally and respectfully! Highly recommend!! S

Yelp
Solid. Great pastries and great cappuccino! There are some days that taste fluctuates depending on the person who makes it but great most of the time. Love their salads, and sandwiches. I've tried Asian chicken salad which is refreshing with mint mixed in to the green. Cobb as well as Mediterranean salads were good. Generous portion but it is in Marin county after all and is pricey. On the side note, I love the one on Magnolia by far than the larkspur landing. The one on Magnolia has friendly and welcoming staff. Larkspur landing staff are not bad, just more like a polite fast food part time workers than staff who care.

Yelp
Been here a ton of times and love its informal tasty nature in Larkspur Landing! My friends and I love rolling in on our bikes and having delicious sandwiches here!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent food and coffee, but Larksuur Landing store is disorganized with long lines and some indifferent employees. I go there when in town to buy their terrific packaged granola, but more times than not, they are out of stock or ask me to come back a day or two later when they promise to have it available. On many occasions they still were out. A lot more attention is given to the food than the service. 5 stars for the food; 3 stars for service.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
While the quality of food is excellent. They run out of pastries by 10:00 in the morning. Thats ridiculous for a bakery. There staff is untrained, not friendly, and often put the wrong things in the bags

Ann K.

Yelp
The food is always fresh and delicious. Recommend ordering in advance and it will be ready when you pick it up.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer at this location (and Larkspur Landing) for years and Lorena always recognizes me. I'm happy to see that they've persisted through COVID-19 and it seems like customers and the staff are getting more attuned to safety protocol. I understand that their offerings and hours have been minimized to accommodate the changes in business and demands. Their vanilla lattés are one of my staples and I'm quite partial to the granola parfait with fresh fruit. Today, I got a ham and cheese croissant to share with my son and they offered to heat it up, which made the cheese in the center deliciously gooey. But, to be fully transparent, the reason that I was motivated to write today's review was because we found sustainable silverware in our take-out bag today. As someone who is routinely dismayed to find a stash of plastic utensils in most of the take-out/delivery bags that arrive these days, even when we have requested otherwise, finding that Rustic Bakery has moved ahead with their sustainability goals - amidst all of the current challenges made me really happy.

Yelp
Stopped into Rustic Bakery for some pre-hike fuel. I ordered a Kouign Amann pastry. The layers were nice and flaky and it had a yummy hit of caramel on top! They have a wide option of pastries and many of the options are impressively sized. My friends ordered a chocolate almond croissant and a Meyer Lemon croissant and were impressed. During covid, they're limiting capacity within the shop. The employees were super friendly and kind to us! It's a cute little spot, perfect for a quick morning bite.

Yelp
Small, quaint bakery/eatery with wonderfully baked goods. Popular breakfast and lunch spot for super casual eats. Think sandwiches, soups, pastries and breads. I've tried slices of their olive oil cake and pecan bars. Both were deelish - fresh, perfectly baked with just enough sugar to satisfy your sweet tooth. What I love about this place: Very relaxing outdoor umbrella seating with great people watching opportunities, but seating fills up quickly on sunny weekends! Alternatively, there's a fair amount of inside seating with a communal table and seats along the window. A lively vibe inside is an added plus.
google avatar

Caroline L.

Yelp
Super friendly employees here! I'm glad they know about their coffee. Not many parking spots however but plenty of seating inside which is awesome. Chai latte, super spicy spice, beware but still good. It's typical chai tea with steamed milk. Cappuccino, perfect! Mocha, not too sweet. I'm really digging this place, it's a nice little coffee shop with some yummy pastries. Also bought a jar of ginger babies that they make for Christmas, super excited!

Yelp
I popped in after doing a job in the area they had a great looking lineup behind the glass i really liked the look of baguettes so i got 2 and ate both for my lunch they were as amazing as advertised im definitely gonna be coming back to try some more

Yelp
Great coffee, amazing service, and delicious sandwiches. I've had every single sandy on their list a number of times and they're always so damn good. But recently I got a BLT from them with crispy bacon that was literally the best sandwich I've ever had in my life. I couldn't tell you exactly why it just all fit together so well, and the bacon was perfect. I def. recommend this particular RB for the lovely staff and top notch kitchen staff. Great coffee too!

Isabella A.

Yelp
Great food, great coffee, and great service. Have ordered in person and online via GrubHub!

Nayil K.

Yelp
I ordered a small size black coffee on the go, and was charged $4.77. When I insisted that I was overcharged they corrected the amount to $3.00. No excuses or nothing. People do make mistakes but this is the second time similar thing happened, and I feel like the personal in this place (including the manager) need to know better how to treat customers in a service business. This is not the only place you can purchase coffee.

Rochelle N.

Yelp
Delicious baked good & great coffee. Perfect place to grab breakfast before a hike in the area.
google avatar

Team O.

Yelp
Great food but they're using plastic cups and straws still maybe they don't know they're in Marin County
google avatar

Pam M.

Yelp
Honestly this is the best bakery/cafe in Marin! The pastry is the flakiest, with buttery perfection and each variation is better than the next. At first my favorite was the ham and cheese croissant, then I had the apple tart which blew me away, the seasonal maple pecan scone is my fall favorite until I had the bear claw. Now I can never decide which to get. If I'm feeling healthy I get the tuna on wheat which never disappoints, and can we talk about the coffee. Not a fan of brewed equator but the espresso divine. My daughters favorite is the mini sopresata which sells out by 10am, so get there early if you want the full compliment.

Jara D.

Yelp
They continuously at the GreenBrae location get the order incorrect - missing or incorrect items.

Yelp
You can find Rustic Bakery's packaged flatbread all over the Bay Area in specialty supermarkets. It's nice to note they had their start as a little bakery, and this is the original location. This is the best of their three bakery locations: cozy, friendly, and intimate. (The larger Larkspur Landing location feels a little impersonal compared to this delightful spot.) Here you can order a slice of strata (warm, baked savory bread and egg custard). Theirs is very bread forward, light on the eggs, ham, gruyere cheese. A breakfast bowl of warm carb goodness. The Americano is a solid one. They had two warm cereals on the menu (including a warm cereal of the day.) Their classic oatmeal with cherry compote (yes, please!) is a simple but tasty order, or you can switch the preserves out for fresh berries, if not a cherry fan. In total, there about eight cafe style small breakfast dishes, and a entire wall of pastries for you to chose from for a morning meal, including a delicious heavily sugared but not frosted cinnamon roll. The biggest surprise was a packaged Asian Chicken Salad I grabbed from the case on the way out. It was really an excellent salad. Very generous, exceedingly fresh and the dressing was pea-nutty good. Much better than any preprepared salad you'd find at a Whole Foods, by a long shot. I plan to try the other salads here to see if they are as good, but I would grab one if you are here, and take it home to see for yourself. It's holiday time, so I also grabbed a beautiful glazed Victorian looking gingerbread at the counter. While it was both pretty and tasty, at $6 was fairly expensive for a cookie. For a cafe, just terrific!

Yelp
100 stars to this place! I could come here every day if I could. I live 70 miles away from this place as I was there for my meetings. I got breakfast and lunch from this place. This place is; - clean - quality food - good service - amazing ambience - beautiful location - good menu selection and I could go on for hours I travel a lot and for me it is important to find a healthy food options with great taste. Whatever you guys are doing, keep doing it because your food is good and quality. Thanks for that.

Yelp
The menu looks good but when you get to the restaurant they don't have half of what's on the menu. Very disappointing. And nobody speaks English when they take your order , it's ridiculous. They used to be better. I'm talking about the rustic bakery on Magnolia in Larkspur specifically.

Molly F.

Yelp
My favorite place to go for lunch and coffee. Home made bread and scones. Super fresh.
google avatar

Shantala D.

Yelp
Walked in. No one bothered to acknowledge I was there. So kept looking at the menu waiting to order. Finally the woman behind the counter says without looking up, 'Are you going to order anything?' I said yes. I am going to order something. She said I had to order now, since they were closing. The main Rustic Bakery page, hadn't acknowledged this location closed 2 hours earlier than the rest in Marin. I asked if I could eat there since I was ordering. (Mind you, the cafe was full of patrons eating their meals.) She said, 'Nope! U gotta take it to go!' I understand it's closing but to be rude about it. I get this is a chain but something about this location, super off-putting. The service, just super rude. Even if it's the end of your shift. Maybe it's Larkspur. It has a reputation of entitlement and rudeness. Never again.
google avatar

Corine C.

Yelp
Love love love the feel and ambiance of this posh cafe. Clean, eclectic, new furniture and fixtures polish the look of this hipster cafe. Most of all, the smooth Marin blend is my favorite along with a scrumptious chocolate croissant for breakfast. For lunch, I like to try all their seasonal soups with a side of bread. Rustic Bakery is where I've had a variety of meetings, interviews, conversations and gatherings. My go-to cafe in Larkspur.
google avatar

Kelli H.

Yelp
I love Rustic Bakery and their salads but this location is insane. I've never seen such a long line for lunch at 1:30 on a Friday. It was out the door and so packed you could barely walk. They were out of so many items it was very disappointing. Our drinks weren't put out until our food was ready and service wasn't friendly or even helpful. While I love the location in Novato I will be avoiding this location in the future.
google avatar

Melody G.

Yelp
OPEN! Just wanted to let you all know that they are open during the covid-19 shelter in place as of 4/2/20. Hours are from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Love this place. Food is good, consistent and everyone is friendly. Daniel is the standout employee here. He's friendly, observant, expedient in service and has a wonderful way of making the customer feel comfortable and at ease. Difficult to do in a process-style environment. **update** 12/12: Not such a good visit this time. Gave feedback to manager. Removed 1 star. We'll be back.
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
Been coming to Rustic Bakery for years. Love all the organic items - salads, soups, pastries, and other breakfast items. Favorites include chicken caesar with capers and pine nuts, buttery croissants, and banana muffin. Also, enjoy all their seasonal items - holiday cookies, candies, etc. Great little gifts you can give people. Can't forget about the egg salad sandwich. Perfect egg salad with not a lot of mayonnaise (just the way I like it). I usually add avocado and tomato and get it on the sea salt facaccia roll. Beat the lines by ordering ahead of time on their app. You can even select when you want the order ready (specific time 11:15 am). I am always rushed in the morning, so sometimes I place my order the night before. Then I just swing by on my way to work and it is ready and waiting for me. Also, super easy to add or remove items from your order -- no mayo, add avocado, etc. Probably frequent the Larkspur Landing (aka the Mart) location the most. I have gotten to know Jennifer the manager over the years, and she is always friendly. She will take the time to to say hello, and normally will knowledge me by name. All the rest of the staff do a great job too. I don't know their names, but thanks for all their help and good food! They make my almond milk lattes quickly too. I appreciate that because as I mentioned I am usually in a rush.

Maria D.

Yelp
Visited today ( I stop in 4-5 times a week at one of the other locations) and explained in detail my allergic reaction to the Caesar salad. I have had this salad for many years without an incident. The employee notified me that the croutons are now made with a variety of different breads and many of them have seeds. I then replied that I must have been allergic to some seed and that I cannot have anything with seeds. The employee then went back to tell the preparer. I was shocked when I returned home and opened my order of avocado toast covered with seeds. I had a major attack and was prescribed medication. I am not sure how this could have happened. Allergies should be taken seriously.

Janice V.

Yelp
Breakfast egg sandwich is my go too. Also a fantastic place to pick up pastries for a morning meeting. They serve Equator coffee so a WIN WIN. Staff is awesome!
google avatar

Marlene C.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken shiitake soup for lunch today. It arrived cold & I was skeptical when so ordered but was so very pleasantly surprised. a perfect bowl of light but hearty soup. Very fresh & tasty!

B V.

Yelp
We went here for lunch and got two sandwiches. It said on the board it came with a side salad but when we opened our to go order there was no salad. The food was ok the prices were high.
google avatar

Marie B.

Yelp
The pastries and sweets are 5 star, the food is 3 star, so split it down the middle with 4 stars. I'm a ginger freak, and their ginger scone is amazing! The bear claw, chocolate croissant, cookies, crackers, and sticky bun are also delicious. The food is always just OK. It always sounds and looks so good, but when you eat it, it's just ok. I've had plenty of sandwiches, soups and salads here, and it ain't cheap, but just not good enough for the price they are asking. The bread on the sandwiches is superb though. Yes, there can be a wait in a long line, but I've never had a bad experience with service as others have mentioned. I'll stick with the sweets here!
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
Great baked goods and salads, the sandwiches are nice but maybe a little bit pricy for what they are. The salads actually seem like a decent deal and baked goods are tasty enough to be worth it. Their coffee is great! Service is always friendly but definitely can be on the slow side when it comes to making the food - just a warning, I wouldn't come here and get something that must be made if I was in a hurry, unfortunately. Grab a pre-made thing and you're fine though. Only star comes off because of the pricy & just okay sandwiches and slow service for said sandwiches, but the quality of everything else is great and customer service is friendly.
