Short review: our experience was a complete disappointment: slow service, overcooked food, lack of basic attention to detail, lack of knowledge for the Ruth's Chris menu, and lack of recognition for a special occasion.
Detailed: We ordered the spicy shrimp appetizer, which took a staggering 35 minutes to arrive at our table. Despite being told repeatedly that it would be just "a few more minutes," those minutes stretched into a lengthy wait. We were understanding of the busy dinner rush and holiday season, but what was frustrating was seeing other tables, including those seated AFTER us, receiving their main course food or multiple appetizer orders while we were still waiting for one simple shrimp appetizer.
Our main courses were no better. We placed our entree orders at 6:40 p.m., and they didn't arrive until 7:46 p.m. There were only three of us at the table, and the tables around us, who arrived after us, were already served, enjoying their meals, and even had their leftovers packed up BEFORE we even received ours. Also, the server didn't seem familiar with the menu either. I was the one that had to tell him that with the Ruth's classic, we have a choice of salad or soup as well as a choice of side dish (mashed potatoes or creamed spinach). He just didn't seem to listen too much and seemed overwhelmed. We had all even asked for extra croutons on the side for our ceasars salads, and when they came, in trying to cover up his mistake of not bringing the croutons, he says "they added the extra croutons in there." I'm sorry, but 5 croutons in my salad is not considered "extra croutons." Little things like that here and there showed that the care and attention already wasn't there.
When our entrees finally arrived, they were far from acceptable. The medium steaks we had ordered--ribeye and filet--were cooked well past medium and basically well done , and the salmon was dry and overcooked. The spinach accompanying the salmon was just raw spinach dumped on the plate. Additionally, we've visited Ruth's Chris before and remember how the steaks come out sizzling with butter and incredibly hot, but our plates were lukewarm at best. They weren't sizzling, and I could touch them with my hands. The mashed potatoes were hard and cold, and the lobster was rubbery and unappetizing. It seemed clear that our food had been sitting for a while, leading to overcooking and cooling.
To add to the frustration, we were repeatedly left without basic utensils. When the shrimp appetizer arrived, we had no forks or spoons. Our server was nowhere to be found, so I had to get up and ask for them. When the entrees finally came, we still had no cutlery. We had to ask for steak knives and forks again, as the forks from our shrimp and salad were taken away after we finished them. When our server didn't return for a few minutes, I had to get up yet again to ask for the necessary utensils. The food grew even colder while we waited. How do you forget to give steak knives at a steakhouse? Or just even notice that your table doesn't even have utensils to eat with?
The most unbelievable part was the unprofessional response we received. A staff member brought over eight sets of forks, steak knives, and napkins for only three of us, saying, "Now you won't run out of knives and forks," as though we were the ones at fault for needing the right utensils to eat our meal. We had never received any utensils for our food in the first place. The passive-aggressive tone and the unnecessary surplus of cutlery only added to the feeling of being treated poorly. We only got three forks for our shrimp and salads WHEN I ASKED. Those were taken away when our plates were cleared, so obviously we needed new forks PLUS steak knives for our entrees. The attempt to make it seem like we were causing an issue by bringing 8 sets of cutlery (forks and steak knives) for only three people wasn't lost on us.
We were patient throughout, and we didn't complain.
What made it even worse was the lack of attention to our special occasion. I had mentioned at both the time of reservation and check-in that we were celebrating my parents' anniversary, yet there was no acknowledgment. We saw other tables receiving special occasion anniversary or birthday desserts, but nothing was offered to us.
There was no inquiry whether we wanted to upgrade our desserts. The server made it seem like we only had the choice to get the cheesecake. Luckily, I read the menu and have been to Ruth's multiple times before, and actually had to ask "can't we upgrade our desserts?" I did upgrade to the creme brulee and I can only laugh at this because after our server brought the desserts, he didn't bring the any cutlery either. Even after all the other utensil debacles throughout the 2.5 hours, our server still didn't pay attention to basic dining needs.
