Yelp
I have been to their Culver City location, but that was over a decade ago, so when I learned they had a spot in the South Bay, I had to check them out.
I had a little bit of time to burn so I decided to forego ordering online and just do it in person. Parked up front, walked in, stood behind a couple of customers ahead and me and found myself up front in no time. Put in my order for a party of 4 and verified they had my order right using the order screen right up front. (Love that, btw!)
Food is made to order (which is always desirable) so the wait was reasonable. I got to look around a bit and found dining in is an option. Space is limited, though, given the pandemic. I took my time to look around as I waited. They do have limited seating available inside as well as outside.
My order was ready and I was on my way out not too long after. Gotta say it was a little torturous driving home with that mouthwatering aroma lingering in the car! It's a good thing I don't live too far!
Unpacked the goodies and the house smelled delicious! Although everyone had their own individual orders, we all shared a little bit of our food with each other. Oh, the excitement to dig in!
SPAM MUSUBI: As expected but nothing out of the ordinary. A pretty good starter.
KALBI: Like the spam musubi, it is as expected, but delicious. Great marinade and seasoning on the meat. Grilled tender and juicy. There were 2 orders of these: one with macaroni salad and the other with green salad. Had a taste of the mac salad and it was delicious! I would have liked to have tried the green salad except THEY FORGOT IT. So, yeah, we were missing a while side.
LOCO MOCO: It's a pretty big order for a regular! This is the one item I wanted to order but since someone else got it, I figure I'd try it. Sadly, I didn't get to. I'm not sure why, I think I was busy with the kalbi... definitely getting it next time, though!
SHRIMP ROYALE: I (still) have no idea what a Hawaiian royale is, so I figured I'd try one of theirs. Ordered their shrimp version without sprouts. Had I known it came with broccoli, I would have had that taken out, too. I will admit this will have a bad verdict: I DID NOT LIKE IT. It was incredibly bland. The whole thing didn't have any flavor. Even that side of teriyaki sauce couldn't save it, so I wouldn't recommend this. (I did a little research and I probably should have ordered their original. Keeping that in mind for next time.)
FOOD: 3. (My particular order would have been a 1, but everyone else liked their food so an average rating is only fair.)
SERVICE: 3. Friendly staff, however, they forgot the side salad to go with one of the kalbi orders. That is never good.
VALUE: 2.5. I felt it was kinda pricy given the missing salad and my bland food.
PARKING: Five spots available up front. Not sure what the back looks like. OVERALL: 2.75. (Really close to a 3, but not quite.)
I was expecting a better experience, but this first was almost average at best. I do intend to come back, though, and try other things on their menu. I expect they'll do better then.
Speaking of menu: as I looked through it while waiting for my order, I was handed another, unveiling they now serve Mediterranean food. (They were called Rutts Hawaiian Cafe on my visit just a couple of days ago.)
I feel I they deserve another chance, so I would still return. The online order discount is appealing enough for a second visit. Hoping for a better experience then.
