Visiting Anuradhapura feels like stepping back in time. This ancient city, one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, is rich in history, culture, and spiritual energy. From the moment you arrive, you're surrounded by grand ruins, sacred temples, and peaceful landscapes.
One of the most memorable moments for me was seeing the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, believed to be a sapling from the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. There's a powerful sense of calm and reverence in the air. Pilgrims, some dressed in white, gather to offer flowers and prayers. It’s a truly spiritual experience.
The ancient stupas like Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya are architectural marvels. It’s hard to believe these massive structures were built over 2,000 years ago. Their scale and symmetry are breathtaking, especially when lit by the golden light of sunset.
Beyond the temples, the city offers quiet beauty, large reservoirs like Nuwara Wewa, tree-lined roads, and gentle breezes that make evening walks peaceful and refreshing. The people are friendly and respectful, especially around the sacred areas.
Anuradhapura isn’t just for history lovers,it's for anyone looking to reconnect with culture, nature, and inner peace. It’s not a fast-paced city. It encourages you to slow down, observe, and reflect.
