Ryokan Sawanoya | Best places to stay in Tokyo

"Friendly and family-run, this Japanese inn in the retro Yanaka district offers a budget-friendly version of the traditional ryokan experience. While high-end ryokan are all about luxury, what you get here is a simple tatami-mat guestroom, with futon beds put out at night, plus access to a pair of modest hot-spring baths. Because the Sawanoya doesn’t come with the non-negotiable multi-course kaiseki-ryori dinner served in plusher inns, you also get an inn that’s great for a multi-night stay – ideal if you want to immerse yourself in Yanaka and other parts of Tokyo’s older, down-to-earth northeast. My family and I stayed at Ryokan Sawanoya for two weeks in November and had a wonderful visit. The ryokan is located in a quiet and charming neighborhood, and it was a lovely experience each day to walk through the residential streets and pass by neighborhood shops and schools, and all the beautiful temples and shrines. At the same time, it was very close to lively shopping streets with many unique shops and cafes, and easy to access various grocery and convenience stores. We stayed in the three-person room on the second floor which was very quiet and comfortable. The main room could be closed off with a shoji so that I could sit in the narrow sitting area early each morning with a cup of tea and do a little work without disturbing my family as they slept. This space also had a small fridge which made it very convenient for us to keep milk, snacks and breakfast items. The electric water kettle in the room was also extremely handy and greatly appreciated. The main room had a table and cushions, and a tv with local channels which we enjoyed watching as we relaxed after a long day. While our room had an excellent shower (which my husband made use of) and large bath, my daughter and I made frequent use of the ceramic onsen bath which looks out onto a tranquil courtyard garden on the ground floor. This was truly a magical experience and one of the highlights of our trip to Tokyo. We continue to miss the bath and the little fish in the pond outside the sliding window. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and are grateful to the Sawa family who were all so kind during our visit. Many thanks for a wonderful experience!

Ryokan Sawanoya was one of the most memorable and heartwarming places we stayed during our entire trip to Japan. The onsen alone is worth the visit. It is absolutely beautiful, peaceful, and deeply relaxing — a perfect retreat after exploring Tokyo. The atmosphere instantly puts you at ease and feels like a true escape within the city. The staff were incredibly kind, friendly, and warm. They made us feel genuinely welcomed from the moment we stepped inside. One of the highlights of our stay was how thoughtfully they treated our daughter’s stuffed animals. They took the time to ask about the three she brought on the trip, let her choose the tiny futons and blankets for each one, and set everything up as if they were honored guests too. She was in absolute heaven. She still talks about it and says it was her favorite stay of our entire two weeks in Japan. The origami cranes on our pillows were the sweetest touch as well. The location in Yanaka is perfect. The neighborhood is charming, walkable, and full of character, with small shops, local restaurants, and peaceful streets that feel like a step back in time. Staying at Ryokan Sawanoya made us fall in love with the area, and next time we go to Tokyo, we would love to stay here for our entire trip. We cannot recommend this ryokan highly enough. It is special in every way.

This was a fantastic little ryokan. Super quiet, located in a neighborhood of tiny houses, but near some major places in Tokyo such as Ueno park. They offer a breakfast in their dining room: a choice of western style (eggs and toast) or Japanese style (nigiri and miso), both of which were very good. The staff was friendly and spoke English very well. The rooms are decorated traditionally with tatami mats, and they supply you with a yukata to wear while going to and from the baths. The only downside is that the rooms are very tiny and the bathrooms are shared (one bathroom on each floor), but the traditional style baths make up for it. There are two bathing rooms on the first floor, with very nice baths that have a view out into a small garden while you soak. Overall, while completely different from a western style hotel, staying here was an amazing experience!

This time I'm very fortunate enough to finally booked a slot for this ryokan. Situated in a very quiet and peaceful neighborhood. They receive everybody as part of their family as you enter the door. and make sure also that you are comfortable enough as you are at your own home. From the rooms, baths, dining area, fridge, washing machines, microwave. They've got everything waiting for you. Spic and span! Got the chance to maximize every opportunity to enjoy the ryokan. Just what your beaten feet and body needs. Great timing also with the weather when we were there. Was deeply humbled to experience the traditional Sawanoya family send off after checking out. Will definitely book again next time visiting Japan. Sending love and respect especially to elderly Sawanoya couple.

This was my second stay at Ryokan Sawanoya. I stayed there about 18 years ago on my first visit to Tokyo and have tried to get another booking there ever since with no luck until now. The staff are helpful and make the ryokan feel comfortable and welcoming. The neighbourhood is quiet. There are lots of restaurants, it’s close to public transport, safe and charming. I would definitely stay again.

We had a perfect stay in ryokan Sawanoya. The family who runs it are very friendly and helpful, the room has everything you need and is very clean. The breakfast is lovely and the location is in a quiet area that actually feels local, while still being very close to Ueno. The two onsens deserve a special mention, it was lovely to have a soak after long days of sightseeing. I would love to stay here again, so highly recommend!

I have stayed at the Sawanoya twice. I always recommend it to anyone who says they are visiting Tokyo. Very reasonably priced and located in a quiet neighbourhood. The family who run it are wonderful! Rooms are traditional Japanese style and the baths are amazing. Remember to wash first before bathing! Close to the Nezu subway station and a short walk to Ueno park. I took two friends with me on this trip and they both fell in love with the place. Will definitely stay here again (once I can afford to come to Japan again!)

Yelp
My favorite place to stay in Tokyo. I've been twice and am going back in January. A family-run ryokan for over 70 years. The Sawa family are kind, helpful, speak some English and keep a spotless ryokan. The two Japanese style private baths overlooking the garden are a highlight. The neighborhood of Yanaka is one of my favorites in Tokyo too..lots of bars, excellent restaurants abd parks..very walkable. Nezu Shrine is just a five minute walk away and not to be missed.

Yelp
If you're looking for a great traditional Japanese experience consider this ryokan!! It's a small family-run establishment, very hospitable. They'll provide you a map of the local area and help you navigate. No online reservations so you'll have to call and verbally make a booking. Not too bad on their English skills, much better than others places actually. Short taxi ride from the Ueno station, the walk is a little more involved. Vending machines sell Asahi beer! I miss this place so much! とてもしっている。
