Ryoriya Maekawa

"Owner-chef Koichi Maekawa’s goal is to present a ‘ryoriya’ (‘cookery’) that reflects his taste and personality, unfettered by established practice. He strives for originality while leaving core tenets of Kyoto cooking intact. In a witty touch that can’t help but make you smile, fried shrimp-shaped and -patterned yam in tomato sauce is dressed with sakura shrimps. The eatery, with its triangular ceiling reminiscent of a houseboat, is wrapped in an amusing air." - Michelin Inspector

We had an early dinner around 5:30 PM, and there were only two of us and a Japanese couple in the restaurant. Since we don’t read or speak Japanese, we chose the chef-recommended Toki Special eight-course menu. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. We really enjoyed our experience here. Highly recommend!

Best meal we had in Japan (1 week trip, in Tokyo and Kyoto. Had dinner at a michelin starred restaurant and a few michelin guide restaurants. But this was the best). So good we came back the next day for lunch before going to the airport! Very friendly staff (everyone is super friendly in Japan!). Good variety of dishes and flavours. Would strongly recommend!

Incredible experience. The staff was so friendly and did speak some English. From the moment we walked in the door to the moment we left the cozy street on which this place resides, we were made to feel like family. We felt at home with every dish and every interaction with the owner/chef and the two support staff. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for a taste of Japan, and Kyoto in particular. Only the freshest ingredients used (what’s in season). Portions were fairly large considering there were 8 courses. Incredible flavors (balanced richness, acidity, sweet), textures (ran the whole gamut), proteins (fish, pork, beef, mushroom), and vegetables. The Poseidon sake we tried was perfectly balanced for the meal. 5 stars and no edits. For the price, this is fully worth every penny. My favorite meal in Kyoto, and possibly my favorite meal of our trip to Japan. Thank you, Toki staff!

A family run business in which the father runs the kitchen with no compromises. Only the best ingredients and precision with lovely English speaking service. Set menu but that’s a good thing. decent wine selection prices! ANY TIME AGAIN

We made a reservation for Ryoriya Toki after seeing it’s the sister restaurant to Ryoriya Otaya. We had a wonderful experience and highly recommend this restaurant! It is a family run restaurant and the chef greeted us by name when we entered. Originally, we were one of two parties in the restaurant so the chef handled almost all the cooking and dish preparation himself while his wife and daughter worked elsewhere in the restaurant. As the tables filled throughout the night, all of the family stepped into the kitchen to cook and prepare the dishes. The care and intimacy they imparted into their cooking made us feel like we were recipients of a lovingly home cooked meal of top tier quality. After 1.5 weeks in Japan, this is one of my most memorable meals of this trip. Please stop by and visit yourself!

They have a set menu for 6500 yen or a fancier version for 8700 yen. It's unclear what the actual difference is though. There is also a 10% service charge and a minimum of one drink per customer. Which brings the total bill to either around 7800 yen each or around 10,200 yen each, depending on what drink you get. So it's quite expensive. The food, however, is exceptional. It was all extremely high quality and remarkably presented. Everything is made to order and delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful despite their limited English. I highly recommend eating here if you don't mind the price-tag.

Walked without reservation. They only have 2 types of set menu, we picked 8700 one. Everything is cooked in front of you from fresh ingredients and is absolutely delicious. Staff is welcoming and friendly, trying to explain everything in English.

Amazing restaurant and staff. The Staff is really nice, even though they did not speak fluently english, they were extremely helpful and kind to us!! The food was just great, we had the first meal option and we were very satisfied with the food, it was a little a expensive, but for us it was totally worth it. This restaurant is definitely worth trying, for an unique and traditional experience!!! Keep in mind: *Large Groups are not recommended *Under 13 can not go in
