Ryoriya Maekawa

"Owner-chef Koichi Maekawa’s goal is to present a ‘ryoriya’ (‘cookery’) that reflects his taste and personality, unfettered by established practice. He strives for originality while leaving core tenets of Kyoto cooking intact. In a witty touch that can’t help but make you smile, fried shrimp-shaped and -patterned yam in tomato sauce is dressed with sakura shrimps. The eatery, with its triangular ceiling reminiscent of a houseboat, is wrapped in an amusing air." - Michelin Inspector

Our party of 3 walked in late in the evening and were sat immediately. The service, while in mostly Japanese was warm and inviting. They do not have an a la carte translated menu. We really enjoyed the coursed meal and would have chosen it anyways. The food was really delicate and interesting, not to mention beautiful. The chef does a great job creatively combining flavors, textures, and temperatures. Overall great experience.

Excellent meal, one of our favorites on our two week trip. Our last meal in Japan and we could not be happier - the food and service were excellent. We were not very hungry when we walked in and by the end we wish we had ordered twice as many dishes they were so delicious. I would consider this a must visit whenever in Kyoto. The beef dishes were amazing and the braised eel dish (with a very unique nutty sauce) was incredible. Thank you to the wonderful staff for hosting us!

Best meal we’ve had in Japan! Such a beautiful experience dining here. The food was exceptional - so full of flavour and beautifully presented. The set menu was able to be adapted for me (pescatarian) which I was very grateful for. A gorgeous family run business, they made us feel cared for and it was a very special evening. Thank you!

We had an early dinner around 5:30 PM, and there were only two of us and a Japanese couple in the restaurant. Since we don’t read or speak Japanese, we chose the chef-recommended Toki Special eight-course menu. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing. We really enjoyed our experience here. Highly recommend!

Best meal we had in Japan (1 week trip, in Tokyo and Kyoto. Had dinner at a michelin starred restaurant and a few michelin guide restaurants. But this was the best). So good we came back the next day for lunch before going to the airport! Very friendly staff (everyone is super friendly in Japan!). Good variety of dishes and flavours. Would strongly recommend!

This was our best meal in Kyoto. We went early (6pm) mid-week with no reservation. There was only one other person there. Staff were very helpful and friendly. There was no English menu as such but we went for the luxury 8 course Keiseki dinner. Staff all spoke some English and explained perfectly what all the dishes were. Everything was delicious and beautifully presented. Standouts were the sashimi, tempura sea eel, wagyu beef and the crab soup with taro. The pear sorbet was also very refreshing and made for a great not-to-sweet desert. All washed down with a couple of local beers. Service was perfect. Felt very relaxed and authentic. Looks like it is a family business. Took maybe 2.5-3 hours. A wonderful experience. Not cheap, but very reasonable for the quality of the food.

Incredible experience. The staff was so friendly and did speak some English. From the moment we walked in the door to the moment we left the cozy street on which this place resides, we were made to feel like family. We felt at home with every dish and every interaction with the owner/chef and the two support staff. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for a taste of Japan, and Kyoto in particular. Only the freshest ingredients used (what’s in season). Portions were fairly large considering there were 8 courses. Incredible flavors (balanced richness, acidity, sweet), textures (ran the whole gamut), proteins (fish, pork, beef, mushroom), and vegetables. The Poseidon sake we tried was perfectly balanced for the meal. 5 stars and no edits. For the price, this is fully worth every penny. My favorite meal in Kyoto, and possibly my favorite meal of our trip to Japan. Thank you, Toki staff!

We made a reservation for Ryoriya Toki after seeing it’s the sister restaurant to Ryoriya Otaya. We had a wonderful experience and highly recommend this restaurant! It is a family run restaurant and the chef greeted us by name when we entered. Originally, we were one of two parties in the restaurant so the chef handled almost all the cooking and dish preparation himself while his wife and daughter worked elsewhere in the restaurant. As the tables filled throughout the night, all of the family stepped into the kitchen to cook and prepare the dishes. The care and intimacy they imparted into their cooking made us feel like we were recipients of a lovingly home cooked meal of top tier quality. After 1.5 weeks in Japan, this is one of my most memorable meals of this trip. Please stop by and visit yourself!
