Ryosenji Temple in Shimoda is a peaceful and culturally rich destination that offers a truly special experience - especially if you visit during the blooming season of the Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow flower, also known locally as American Jasmine. These beautiful bushes line the temple grounds, and their blossoms change color over three days - from deep purple to soft lavender, then to pure white. The fragrance is intoxicating and jasmine-like, adding a dreamy atmosphere to the temple’s serene setting. One of the highlights of visiting Ryosenji is receiving a goshuin stamp from the temple priest. Unlike typical stamps, this one is two pages - created with care and artistry right before your eyes. Watching the priest brush each stroke into your goshuin book is a meditative and memorable moment that deepens the spiritual connection to the site. Whether you're drawn by the seasonal beauty of the flowers or the quiet reverence of the temple itself, Ryosenji offers a unique and enriching experience in Shimoda. Highly recommended for those seeking a blend of nature, tradition, and tranquility.

A historical landmark to mark Japan US trade treaty. This temple had a garden in front and a graveyard on the side. Quite rich culturally and Japanese history. Right next to the temple is Museum of the Black Ship, and the front walking path from the temple lead to old tourist town of Shimoda which is worth visiting.

Lovely little temple in a very quiet area of Shimoda. Certainly not deserving of a 1 star! Check out the line of Manifestations of Buddha statues.
