Detroit’s Biggest Restaurant and Bar Openings, July 2025 | Eater Detroit

"A rebranding that followed community feedback has turned a previous kitchen-and-cocktails concept into a dedicated sushi spot offering a variety of maki rolls, small plates, and sashimi platters. Chef James Lee plans to expand the menu soon to include noodle dishes and other entrees." - Jeffy Mai

Dec 2025: Update 1-STAR. Ordered via Uber Eats and very disappointed. Order arrived with no miso soup and no utensils. The quality of the sushi was extremely poor—below grocery-store level. The rice was soggy, mushy, and tasted old. Fish was passable but not fresh. Rolls were inconsistently sized, poorly assembled, and not even cut properly. Overall presentation and execution were careless. What happened guys?? Feedback to Chef: sharpen knife, make fresh rice, and be hyper selective of daily fish offering. This was honestly sad quality for sushi, especially at restaurant pricing. Would not order again. Sep 2025: 4-STARs. Absolutely loved Ryuu Sushi! The Ryuu Roll and Empire were top-notch—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully executed. Service was warm and attentive. A solid spot for sushi lovers—will definitely be back! 🍣🔥

I'm not really sure how to describe this experience... The location and the ambiance are adorable. I think the staff is genuinely warm, and we had a very late dinner on a week night which is great for Grosse Pointe. The meal tasted hit and miss. The hamachi was definitely sliced too thick, and I think there was something funky about it that resulted in some tummy issues. The other roll was delicious and it was fully cooked. I'd be willing to try the restaurant again, but I am a little worried about the quality and freshness of the fish.

What a cool place! We made reservations and had to sit at the bar because there are only a few tables. The service was great. Both of the servers were personable, friendly and fun. The drinks were interesting and tasty. The sushi was delicious. Definitely a whole vibe. I recommend trying this place. I will definitely return.

We tried this restaurant for the first time on a Monday. No reservations, but immediately seated. One person took our drink order. My bar drink was delivered by someone else and the Diet Coke was served by our original server. (Good cross service.) After this, the service got a bit wonky. Our order was taken. Someone completely different brought our appetizer of edimame, but to the table next to us. That table informed the staff person they didn't order it. I overheard the exchange and raised my hand that it belonged to us. Next, someone brought out two soup bowls and tried to deliver them to our table. I waved them away while at the same time another table called out that the soups were theirs. When our main entrees were delivered, AGAIN the server set them down on a different table and described the sushi rolls. Sounded just like our order, I thought. As the server was walking away, the other table decided they didn't order those rolls, so again I raised my hand that the order was ours. My husband and I waited tables for years. This kind of thing shouldn't happen. Number the tables, put it on the ticket, and train the staff on how to navigate the front of the house. The rolls were tasty, although the large plate they were served on looked as though there should have been something in the middle. It's still a new restaurant and I hope they can work out these kinks. We'll give it another try.

Recently had a fantastic experience here a few times in one week! Ordered takeout for dinner (Tokyo 10) and the sushi was top notch, blew us away. So much so, we needed to try dining in on Saturday night. The experience was even better. Food/presentation was phenomenal. Service was excellent and sincere. If you're looking for the best Sushi in the Detroit metro area, I think you'll have a had time beating this place!

Awesome atmosphere. My bartender Mike was really cool and blew us away with his mixology repertoire. Highly recommend the Motor City roll. We will be back again next weekend for sure. The manager Don had us laughing hysterically. I am seriously going to try everything on this menu.

Ordered 3 rolls for pickup. Las Vegas Roll, White Flame, and Empire roll. The Vegas Roll was a little fishy the White flame seared tuna on top was overcooked for being seared, Vegas Roll was good but again the salmon was pasty. Consistency in the prices between their website and online ordering was different too.

Sushi is so available now that it’s been a long time since I’ve had “bad” sushi - sometimes it’s mid (eg Kroger), but at least tastes fine. I got this place tonight and it was flat out some of the worst sushi I’ve ever eaten. It was so fishy tasting, not fresh at all. And the rice they used in the rolls was terrible - it was mushy and overcooked and seemed like rice that was sitting in a fridge for days. The rolls were constructed nicely and the presentation was good, but whatever ingredients they had on hand tonight were beyond gross where we didn’t even eat half of it. Too bad

Yelp
Met a friend here for drinks and appetizers because she said they had a happy hour. When we get there they're happy hour was essentially two or three dollars off a handful of drinks, no happy hour specials on rolls or food of any kind, which was very disappointing to us. You still had a great time catching up. I had the matchatini, which I would not order again. Although it looked kind of awesome, a tasted very watered down. I have no complaints about the service whatsoever, but after having back surgery recently, they did not have a lot of back friendly seating. And they are connected to the slide sidecar slider bar next door, and there arcade was in the back of the restaurant so that was kind of loud. May or may not come here again, a better happy hour menu would be a gigantic plus for this place.

Yelp
The atmosphere is wonderful and the booths cozy and comfortable. They've got an impressive drink menu and hit it out of the ballpark. Service was very attentive and the sushi...awesome and plentiful. Not cheap, but very good value for what you get. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Food wasn't the worst thing ever but it was far from good. The drink that i had was overly syrupy and did not taste good. For a sushi place, i would say its a 5/10 for food and drink The service is where this place really falls apart. Food took about an hour from ordering to come out, and the restaurant was about half full so i couldnt imagine if it was busy there. The waitress was nice but they were celebrating about closing and rushing us out even though the food took forever to come out. We would have liked to leave a half hour earlier as well haha. Service ranking 3.5/10 Ambiance wasn't terrible, but its just not laid out well and the arcade in the back is extremely noisy. 6.5/10 Overall below average and i wanted so bad to like it because i wanted good sushi nearby. Unfortunately, i will stilll be driving to downtown detroit or over to the birmingham area for my sushi. Hope it can improve!

Yelp
So so so good. Everything was so creative and fresh. We tried a few different things and loved how the menu wasn't the same ole sushi menu you see elsewhere. I brought a friend and our kids and everyone left satisfied. It was the best sushi I've had in a long time.

Yelp
Great portions in the sushi... delicious sweet potato toll two. We will be back! Tuna and salmon rolls well-sized.

Yelp
Nice place! Good tasting sushi with a little flair. You can see that they are working out a few things still but they are on a good track. The sushi is bit pricey so this won't a regular spot for us. But we are looking forward to our next visit

Yelp
I had high expectations for the restaurant. It is in my neighborhood. I took my wife there today. Waitstaff was a little bit slow and keep in mind the place wasn't crowded by any means. The light above us kept going dim to bright like it was on a rheostat. We sat in the bar area so it was very evident this was happening. No one seemed to care. I have been to a number of sushi bars and the people preparing the rolls or what have you are front and center. Not the case at this establishment. The attire for the waitresses, not at all appropriate. I don't need to stare at somebodies belly button while ordering my drinks let alone my meal. The tablets hanging from their arms are a huge distraction... I can just continue but will stop there. We left after a drink. We where hoping for some excellent sushi but in the end it was too much. If that is what is allowed in the main dining room what happens behind the scene. I'm so sad about this since it is on the main street of Grosse Pointe but truth has to be said.

Yelp
Was SO excited for a sushi place to open up in GP. Unfortunately this was probably the worst sushi I've ever had. Ordered a couple speciality rolls and a spicy tuna roll. Unfortunately the specialty rolls that mention crab is actually fake crab stick. This was not noted on the menu and for a $19 roll, I wasn't expecting that at all. Beyond that, the sushi just doesn't taste fresh at all. We were genuinely beside ourselves and both felt so gross after. Got there around 7:15 and our food didn't come until nearly 9 pm for three rolls. Keep in mind there were only two other tables there too. When we finally were eating, the staff started celebrating that they could start closing everything down...just a bad experience all around. The chef/management should go try Noble Fish (clawson) or Bash Izakaya (detroit)- that is the kind of sushi we need around here.
