11 Essential Kansas City Foods to Eat on Your Next Trip - AFAR

"A cozy River Market favorite widely praised for its authentic, inexpensive Vietnamese fare—most notably a pho whose deeply flavored broth is simmered for 24 hours, delivering clear, aromatic depth. Bowls are garnished with fresh cilantro, bean sprouts, sliced jalapeño, and sriracha; service is quick, prices are reasonable, and the food maintains a distinctly non‑Americanized comfort-food quality." - Caitlin Morton

Columbus Park’s institution for restorative pho, bún bò Huế, and rice plates. Readers and critics alike cite it among KC’s best bowls; lines move fast, and the broth is worth the wait.

Google
This was my Mom's favorite place. Went for the 1yr anniversary of her passing to enjoy some Pho and iced coffee. We were greeted with friendly faces and the food was delicious!

This Vietnamese restaurant in Kansas City is an absolute gem, offering authentic flavors that feel both comforting and refreshing. Com Tam is perfectly balanced, and coffee is amazing. A wonderful spot for true Vietnamese cuisine!

Our food was brought out about 8 minutes after ordering. It was so quick. My noodles were delicious and my husband enjoyed his beef pho. The servers were not overbearing but came over enough to refill drinks and make sure the food was good. Best of all prices were reasonable compared to most restaurants nowadays.

Vietnam Cafe is a KC classic! Solid pho every time. The service is quick and no nonsense. There is plenty of seating inside for couples and families. Would definitely recommend!!!

Thank you to yelpers who gave great recommendation and urge those who haven’t ventured here to give this place a try! I am visiting Olathe KS for 7 nights during this Labor Day week. Was hoping I’d have chance to see my boyfriend Matt Dz…..z to give him moral support in his difficult time. But though we haven’t been connecting I find KS and MO very pretty historic and friendly cities. I love it here! Some areas are more diverse than others and I feel that where this cafe is located, it is a gem in the local Asian community apparently strong here. Atmosphere here is pretty Asian, long line, they seat parties based on what seating is available. Maybe one of the pros of being alone just for this instance I got seated right away! People are quick on their feet taking orders, moving chairs around. Smells good in here! There are TV monitors showing anime. Very unassuming bare walls with minimal decor. They’re letting the food speak for what they’re known for. Being 1/3 Vietnamese, of course I come to try KS BBQ which my boyfriend loves but I also crave Vietnamese food! I ordered Bun Bo Hue, they make it authentic here with pork blood. The broth was rich but was slightly on sweet side so I made it perfect by adding mam ruoc (shrimp paste). Everything expected was in the Bun bo hue like the cha lua (pork roll). One tiny thing I was looking for was the pig knuckle that normally comes with this dish. It was missing today :-( Still overall definitely 5 stars for food! I also ordered Banh Xeo to go for dinner!

The two of us tried 5 dishes. All the dishes were great except one. I would like to go there again. I went to Vietnam a few years ago and the taste is just as good as there.

Google
First time in Kansas City and my brother i was here to see recommend going here for pho. Walked in and made a carryout order super quick. Was told it'd be 15- 20min and we were back out going down the road in 12min. Very very delicious pho and crab raccoon! Highly recommended by this guy!

Google
This restaurant is popular for a reason – it’s one of the best Vietnamese spots in the Kansas City area. It has been around for a while and consistently delivers authentic, flavorful dishes. Personally, it’s one of my favorite places for Vietnamese food. The staff is also fantastic, offering great recommendations and helping you understand the menu.

Yelp
This was a highly recommended food location - and it lived up to the hype. It's your classic super simple but excellent food location. I managed to come when it wasn't super busy so I was seated right away. The restaurant itself is low frills, focusing all of their attention on the food itself. You also get served very quickly - and once my order was placed, my food came out only a few minutes after. There was pretty easy to get street parking in the area. You also pay at the cash register. The food itself was incredible: the broth was extremely rich and had a subtle sweetness to it. Nothing felt super heavy or overwhelming - and the portions plentiful, especially for how low cost the pho is. The noodles were very tender and the beef a perfect texture. The BBQ pork spring rolls and peanut sauce were also excellent. I'd highly recommend to anyone in the area!

Yelp
Food is out of this world, service is great and the ambiance is just what you expect from a cozy and truly authentic Vietnamese cafe close to downtown Kansas City.

Yelp
The Vietnam Cafe experience is a well oiled machine. You come in sit down, your server gives you 5-10 minutes before taking your order. Your food comes out no longer than 10minutes after ordering. You pay up at the counter and go about your day. Some may not love the simplicity of it but they know what they're doing and they're good at it. The pho is delicious, the broth is rich with flavor and they leave you with lots of add ons on the table for you to spruce up the pho with your flavors of preference. The rolls were also so dang good, it's hard to beat a crunchy crispy delicious egg roll. This place is casual and quick, and that warm delicious goodness will have you coming back for a truly great meal at an exceptional price.

Yelp
My favorite pho place in KC!! I always have to stop here when I visit. The owners are very nice and the service is great. Food is amazing and they give good portions. Got the pho day biet and cafe sua da. The che was great too! Would like to stop by again to try their other dishes.

Yelp
I came here because this place was one of the highest rated restaurants close to the downtown KC area. But oh my god, how the heck did this get the high rating it has? Maybe they were better in the past, but all the food was just so sweet. I absolutely hate wasting food. But I left this food behind because I genuinely found it just inedible. My parents felt the same way, they had a few bites and just couldn't stomach it. Service also wasn't great. We waited for about 5 minutes to be seated (party of 3) when they only had like 3 other tables to wait on. And even then, we felt like we were forgotten because we had to flag one of the employees down after 20 minutes of waiting for someone to take our order. We should have just walked away at this point... that's a huge red flag. Bad service, mid atmosphere, horrendous food. Skip this place. IF it was good before, it definitely is not anymore. Coming from an Asian person who knows what good pho is.

Yelp
Some of the best food I've had in KC. We stopped in on a Friday at around 2 pm. Probably too late for the lunch crowd but too early for dinner, so there was no problem parking right in front of the restaurant and getting seated immediately. We had spring rolls, Pho (seafood and chicken), and lemongrass beef (forgot the name). Everything was delicious and the prices were reasonable. I would love to try some of the other menu items.

Hannah C.

Yelp
They had good vegetarian options and the portions were huge. I enjoyed the retro booths and like how laid back it felt. The service was a little slow but not bad.
google avatar

Casey-Jack K.

Yelp
I absolutely loved the food! Pho is my comfort food and is bout the only thing when my acid reflux acts up. The only thing that was disappointing was the service. We were checked on once and no refills were offered for water. Still I'd return for the food.

Yelp
Not sure if I chose the wrong day to order or the cooks was swamped. First off Utensils. I've requested it and of course they didn't give any. I was there for a business meeting and its just not convenient to hunt down forks or chopsticks to eat your food. It should be in there automatically! Ordered the Porkchop combo with their shredded crab, eggs, and meatloaf. Missing the meatloaf...and the "porkchop(s)" seemed so beat up and unevenly seared that it was just unappetizing to look at. one sided was somewhat grilled and the other side was pale white. The Shredded pork floss... was on the side which was soggy? I don't even know what made it that but i felt like it wasn't fresh. Overall this dish was a disappointment. The Pho on the other hand was decent. Portion was fair but cutting up a meatball into 4 pieces is what i call cutting corners. Vietnamese food use to be a stable of affordability. It use to be good cheap eats with great portions. Due to how trending foods are and hiked prices. You're definitely not getting your bang for your buck. Even so if I am paying premium prices or "standard" I should get a fair quality. Overall, the chef didn't pay attention to details in the order and just half assed it. I wished I got a better experience vs how others have praised upon this place.

Yelp
Vietnam Cafe with its unassuming green awning, lies on an quiet corner in Columbus Park. This is one of the better Vietnamese restaurants in KC in my opinion, with its no-fuss service, décor, and bountiful platters of tasty food. My husband always gets the pho, which he says has one of the better broths in KC. I'm a big fan of their shrimp bun with its cool crisp veggies and warm grilled shrimp. It's perfect for any weather honestly. I would not recommend Vietnam Cafe if you're looking for an elevated experience. It honestly is a place you go when you want a plate of good food for a reasonable price. One of the surprisingly tastiest items on their menu is the salted lemonade. It's made with preserved lemons and it's mind-boggling good. You'll either hate me or thank me later. :)

Yelp
I'm so glad they expanded! It's been a long time coming. Their dishes are beyond just good pho. They have most of the normal popular Vietnamese dishes and they have something for everyone. I always get the Mi Kho (egg noodles with pork and shrimp) and my husband gets the pho with beef meatballs every time. We will drive out of our way to get our fix. And the service in the restaurant is fast and efficient!
google avatar

Fiona Z.

Yelp
Pretty good pho with decent portion sizes. Egg rolls weren't great, though. I like they also have some chè desserts (paid for separately at the counter).
google avatar

Scott T.

Yelp
Simply put, best Pho in KC and possibly the US.......sit next to a stranger and slurp. Amazing and simple
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Came here for lunch, first customers in the restaurant for the day! Food was good, service was terrific!
google avatar

Yelp
V4/P2: Tofu curry 11/10, plenty of rice and sauce is ver spicy. Pho was really disappointing. Its not meatballs, it's sad pale hard sausage. The broth was mid at best and no sriracha to go.. I couldn't even finish it the taste was so off-putting. It also gave me a stomach ache so p sure they don't use purified water.. sensies beware
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming here for years! It was the best pho in KC then, and it still is the best pho in KC now. Even with all of the other pho restaurants that have opened up, this OG restaurant wins. Our favorite is the sweet potato fries! For only $6, you can get fresh sweet potato fries with shrimp. I always get the bun bo hue and savor the lemongrass-y pork broth. The combination pho with all the goods: brisket, tendon, meatballs. Located in a neighborhood, the parking can be difficult as it is mostly street parking. Now that the restaurant has expanded, there is so much more room and nicer bathrooms. Service is quick and friendly.
google avatar

Chelsey V.

Yelp
Fast service, very clean, and pay at the counter so quick when you're done. The food is delicious, flavorful, and well prepared. Details are important and you can see it in their dishes. Parking isn't bad along the street but it doesn't get full quickly! Great place for Pho but also so many other Vietnamese plates. Love the original location best in Columbus Park
google avatar

Jonelle W.

Yelp
Big seating area and everyone was friendly when I entered. I prefer this location to the other on Rainbow but they are equally good. I don't eat pork but decided to get the pork chops because my friend previously ordered it. The pork chop was seasoned to the bone. Very delicious and portion size is a lot.

Yelp
Vietnam Cafe is a gem of a place in Kansas City. One of my absolute favorite places to eat and should become one of yours too! This place has been around for as long as I can remember, even before they expanded into the bigger space. Menu is extensive without being overwhelming. Service is always superb and food is made to order and fast, so great place to stop for lunch. FYI they are closed on Tuesday's. We always start with the fresh spring rolls and one of my most favorite dishes ever, the crispy shrimp and sweet potatoes. Served with lettuce, it's a sort of build your own lettuce wrap stuffed with the crispy shrimp and the deliciously hot sweet potato fries! Yum! A few of our other favorites include pho, rice and bbq pork platter, mushroom and beef hot pot, egg noodle wonton soup. Really can't go wrong with anything on the menu here! Get adventurous and try something new. We also love the Vietnamese coffee which is strongly brewed espresso served on ice with delicious sweetened condensed milk. 5/5 stars, a classic go to for us.

Yelp
This restaurant just outside of the River-market area in KC MO is a must try! Staff was friendly and welcoming, customers inside seemed pleased and place was busy for a Monday lunch! I had the crab Rangoon, excellent along with the spring rolls, the peanut butter dipping sauce was excellent! Also, had the Quail and rice, first time for everything! Cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Brittany A.

Yelp
The outside of the building is so stunning. We came in about 12:30 on a Thursday and they were poppin! We were greeted with a divine smell of pho. I have gone to quite a few places that serve pho. When I tell you this is one of the best I've had !! I will definitely be coming back. I got a Vietnamese iced coffee. The flavors did not disappoint! The staff were friendly and we got serviced so quickly. I was offered a to go container for my pho and coffee. Absolutely happy with my visit !
google avatar

Tom P.

Yelp
Although it's not overly impressive at first glance, our dinner was great! Everyone we came into contact with was friendly and helpful. The appetizer of spring rolls was well-done and tasty (2 rolls cut in half). My wife's vegetarian dish with tofu was reportedly tasty and filling. My pho dish was more than I could have hoped for, and very good (pork). Including a generous tip, the bill was less than $50!!!
google avatar

Thomas H.

Yelp
It's bigger!! Been a while since we have been here. Cannot wait for the amazing food!! It was so good!!! Service is always amazing. And now it's a bigger beautiful restaurant. Cozy and enough room to move around.
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
It is one of my favorite spots for vietnamese food that is just done well all the time. I rarely get to come, but it provides nostalgia. I do miss the old environment as they have expanded and modernized it to accommodate more people, but the service is still excellent. We ordered pho and chicken cold noodle dish along with spring rolls and fried shrimp rolls and Vietnamese drip coffee. Everything turned out great but I have had better spring rolls and they were smaller than expected. They tasted like they had made it a lot earlier in the day. Overall my company and some comfort food always goes a long way so even though it's not what it used to be in terms of ambiance as a "hole in the wall", it still retains and remains a great place to eat w quality food and service

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Amazing Pho! And serving size is well above average. Will make this a KC stop every time we are in town.
google avatar

JoAnn R.

Yelp
We have been coming here for years. It's the best Vietnamese place in Kansas City. Not the greatest neighborhood but it's safe and easy to hop on and off the highway East of and in the River Market area. Pho and noodle dishes are very tasty with just the right amount of spice. Family owned and the service is fast and friendly. We have gone to the one on Rainbow too for years and years and it's also as good! Fresh spring rolls are killer good.
google avatar

Molly M.

Yelp
I could only give stars because the employees were nice and there were good toppings, but the bun bo hue wasn't good, didn't taste like anything but watery broth (but barely). I was really looking forward to something more deep, rich, and flavorful. Even lots of sriracha didn't give it much. Maybe a bad day to get this but reviews seem back and forth.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Very good Vietnamese restaurant. Ordered the spring roll, shrimp roll on bamboo, and pho. Flavor was really good, broth was not too much MSG, and the fish sauce was perfect. Will recommend!
google avatar

Dawn H.

Yelp
This is the best. And I say that without having tried the Pho which is one of the things they are known for. Everything we tried was delicious. Really what I need to capitalize is related to the lemonade with salt. It is a revelation. I think they use preserved lemon to give it that salty-satisfying touch. It's not too salty, just enough to make this drink interesting and quenching. The picture doesn't look like much but it'll bring the foodie in each of you to tears.
google avatar

Phuong O.

Yelp
It was cold and I wanted to get some pho but I see now why it's lacking. Ordered the pho dac biet which is the special and a side of crispy spring rolls. The spring rolls were ok, filling was just the right amount but taste wise it was ok. The flavor of the broth for the pho was not there, the aroma of the ingredients that are used for pho was not there. The soup was very sweet and salty, luke warm as well. The majority of the bowl's filling was noodles. There were 4 pieces of meat, 2 half meatballs which meant it's only 1, and a few slices of the other beef and the rest of the it was nothing but noodles at the bottom O_o My bowl was lacking scallions or green onions, there were only 5 little pieces floating in there. The cilantro wasn't even chopped, they gave it as a whole piece. This restaurant has so many dishes, and I'm sure other dishes taste better than others but the pho here sucked. Since they have a big menu, I can see now that that is the reason their pho lacked proper flavor and ingredients. It takes hours to make proper broth, this tasted like flavored cubes or flavored powder.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
You know a restaurant is good when you get legit cravings to go back! VC's food is so fresh and so fulfilling. The spot is bigger than you think with a seat-yourself-vibe at lunchtime. Service is quick and we almost always have leftovers. Great foodie gem in KC!
google avatar

Cheri M.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try pho for awhile now and read great things about Vietnam Cafe. The restaurant is not big and it was starting to get busy. I tried Pho Bo. It was very good. Rice noodle soup topped with thinly sliced eye of round beef. It was a huge bowl that I could not finish. I also got egg rolls which were called Cha Gio. Deep fried, stuffed with ground, pork, carrots, cabbage and rice vermicelli and served with fish sauce to dip it in. The staff were friendly and got my food fast. It was my first time going to a Vietnamese restaurant. I'll probably come back here in the future to try other things. It's quite a big menu.
google avatar

Dylan K.

Yelp
This is my go to place for pho. The broth is SO GOOD. Definitely get the Vietnamese coffee. It'll wake you up :)
google avatar

Netanya B.

Yelp
Food is great here. Feels homey once you walk in. I love the beef pho here and lemongrass beef. It's in a great location, close to river market and walkable cafe nearby. The service is fast.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Grabbed a fantastic lunch at Vietnam cafe with friends. It was BUSY even at 1:00 in the afternoon on a Saturday. We waited for a seat, but things moved quickly. I've never had Vietnamese food before, so I asked the server what he suggested. I ended up with the B7, which is a noodle bowl, and our table got an order of sweet potato fries and shrimp to share. Everything was delish! I loved the egg roll on top of the B7. The bowl was so fresh and delicious, I'd order it again in a heartbeat. I also want to come when the weather isn't so hot to get some soup!
google avatar

Vicky C.

Yelp
Discovered this family-owned Vietnamese joint while riding the trolley. Prices range $13 - $20 per plate. Portions are small. Not the best, but decent enough for a taste of home in KC.
google avatar

Kayla M.

Yelp
The food is legit. Super great broth in the Pho Bo that had definitely been simmering a while, fresh garnishes. Staff were very friendly despite the a huge lunch rush. The vibe was great, I felt like I had found a little secret gem, but it was also still really busy at the same time. Modest and clean store, and for the price, got about 3 servings of pho will definitely be back

Alex T.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem on the outside of downtown!! So delicous. Broth was so flavorful and loved the peanut sauce for the spring rolls. Food came out really fast and was reasonably priced.
google avatar

Kris P.

Yelp
This place did NOT disappoint! The broth was hearty and rich to perfection. The staff were very attentive and friendly. As I always say here on yelp, Cleanliness is next to Godliness and this place was in tip top shape! I didn't give 5 stars b/c they didn't have the oil chili paste sauce. I'll definitely be back!

Melissa P.

Yelp
Phenomenal pho. Just moved here from California where we had tons of pho options and this was honestly one of the best we've ever had. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Ray J.

Yelp
The Ramen is so damn good I would slap my mother if she tried to take it from me. Five stars for the quality of the food alone.
google avatar

Irene H.

Yelp
Food was delicious!! Everything was amazing we got the spring rolls and crab ragon for starters. Delicious so much flavor! The pho was spot on so big portions! Definitely coming back
google avatar

Erin G.

Yelp
I've heard so much about Vietnam Cafe, and I have to say that it hasn't disappointed either of the two times I've been able to visit! What continues to sound good as the cold weather moves in? One word: Pho. Need something to combat that cold you feel coming on? Pho. And this is definitely some great pho (I've had beef and chicken at this point). They give you all the fixings (even when you take it to-go), including bean sprouts, thai basil (when they have it), cilantro, jalapenos--but if you do take it to-go and you want sriracha or hoisin, be sure to put some in your container of broth! Definitely recommend the pho, if you can't tell. I also got the vegetarian spring rolls (with tofu, yum!) and the deep fried egg rolls with pork (they were okay). Overall though, the people at the restaurant and the vibe of the place have been exactly what I'm looking for--friendly but very relaxed (but also super quick!). I forgot to take pictures from my first visit (took my meal to-go), but this last time, I got a chance to take some photos before digging in and leaving no piece of Vietnam Cafe's offerings behind. I will definitely be coming back to check out their other offerings on the menu!

P B.

Yelp
Authentic, delicious and large servings! Been a favorite for years! Service is fast! A few years ago they enlarged the restaurant making the wait much shorter.
google avatar

Pat C.

Yelp
As said by my 10 year old daughter "Delicious food and I would go back everyday if I could." Service was prompt and friendly. Food was Fantastic, pricing was spot on. It was a busy lunch service and we were in and out within 25 minutes.
google avatar

Jess N.

Yelp
Easy location, street parking. Place was crowded so assuming it's pretty popular amongst people in Kansas. Broth was more on the sweeter side to our liking.

Laura L.

Yelp
Authentic food. Love the peanut sauce for the fresh shrimp rolls. Love the shredded chicken salad can't get that everywhere. Gave one less star because not a fan of their Vietnamese iced coffee. Too much ice and don't wanna wait for it to melt to blend with the coffee. This is based on the explanation when I asked why so much ice and not a lot of coffee.

Anita L.

Yelp
Clean friendly and the food is excellent! This isn't in the best area but I've never had a issue
