The most beautiful energy is something that you will feel in the Jalopy. Super friendly staff and great food. Perfect place to get the beer and listening music. Highly recommend wedding venue for small Weddings.

Google
This place is the best! You gotta get out to Redhook, but it is worth the trip. They have some of the best under-the-radar but totally fantastic live music and theater around. And the staff and general crowd have a great friendly vibe. Also, it is as cheap as you can be in 2021 and still stay open. Do yourself a favor and see something here. You won't regret it.

Alex K.

Google
This is a great, friendly venue! The teachers are all talented musicians and are very personable. They also have a great little coffee and beer bar. Their vintage instruments are all affordable and are full of character. And the concerts and square dances are some of the most fun events in all of Brooklyn! If you love old-time music, country, blues, or folk, coming to Jalopy is always a sure bet. It'd definitely worth the 10 minute walk from the F train at Carroll St.

Lily S.

Google
I’ve been going here since I was little, fantastic music, sometimes even a little dancing! Good drinks and food as well. Very few places like these anymore in Brooklyn, we have to save them ❤️

Google
The coolest anachronistic music venue ever. It's a lovely little theater where you can experience some real Americana. I loved going to Roots & Ruckus with Feral Foster! I'd planned on eventually taking ukulele classes there, but never got around to it. I did hear that their banjo classes were great though! The owners, Lynette and Geoff are amazing people, super generous and warm hearted. I miss this place!

Jessica Ochoa H.

Google
Jalopy is a wonderful community of people who bring outstanding music to Brooklyn and offer musical classes to adults and children. My family has taken singing lessons, banjo lessons, ukulele lessons and piano lessons over the past decade. The teachers are friendly, knowledgable and the owners treat everyone with great kindness. Can't wait to return in person again!

Jesse G.

Google
It was great peforming at your festival. Love to Talia.

Google
Jalopy sponsor's the Brooklyn Folk Festival, which is one of my favorite events in Brooklyn. Casual, family-friendly, with a real community spirit. It has a wide range of performers and workshops. Not to mention tasty snacks and a few quirky craft vendors. Highly recommended. Only downside is that the sound systems range from barely acceptable to unintelligible. If they ever solve their sound woes, it will be perfect.

Yelp
The theatre is a great venue to hear musical acts...we recently attended a show featuring Andy Statman, Jay Gandhi, Ehren Hanson, and David Ellenbogen. It was outstanding and the first live music we have heard in 2021! We had never been there before and came in from NJ especially for this show, but they will be on our radar going forward...
google avatar

Yelp
This has a very special place in my heart. The theatre itself is a wonderful place to both perform and hear live music across the spectrum of folk music and jazz. It's run by excellent people and one my favorite venues in the city. Swing through on a Friday and definitely check their schedule for upcoming events. The Roots and Ruckus nights are a favorite as a bluegrass musician. The connected school is well-known in the community of musicians here, and for good reason. I have many friends that teach here and I can't speak highly enough of that quality instruction you will get if you decide to take a class. Jalopy is super solid with their instructor curation and you can find everything from large group classes to one on one private instruction. They also sell stringed instruments and supplies if you're so inclined!

Yelp
#Pretty cool place to watch/listen to live music. The sound was clear. So hard to get to though. #But I guess if you live right there, it's not.

Yelp
An island of musical and human sanity in the crazy nutty world that is skyrocketing Brooklyn. Jalopy is a historic building and music center not unlike the early town and grange halls you might expect to find in southern Missouri in the early part of the century 100 years ago. I know because I'm a musician and I've played those places. Old wooden floors, tin stamped ceilings, a simple wooden stage for music and enough room for folks to dance if they wish. And real people. Real people, the kind you want to hang out with. Part concern venue, part community music lessons for old-time, Americana and bluegrass, part music store, part music workshops, part bar. A real magnet for acoustic music community of the region. Special props to the people running this place. They're generous to their bands and know the music world inside out. No pretense, friendly and will go out of their way. I called on my way in the middle of a snow storm to ask if they had a single ticket for an out-of-towner on the way to see a band. The owner answered, took my name and said, "I'll make a spot for you. Just get here and ask for me if we're sold out." Cool. Jalopy is the real deal. Hidden away in a far corner of South Hook, if you're a musician, you need to get here, as fast as you can. You'll be glad you did.

Yelp
Simply loved this place and wished I lived closer. We attended an event which was pretty cool and fun.

Yelp
This place is terrible I loved it! So many nice people, friendly and a great show case. I wish it was closer I would be there every night playing and taking classes. I wan to go back and the bar next door is a must!

Yelp
Jalopy's music classes on Zoom have weirdly ended up an important pillar of my survival during the pandemic. I started taking a voice class on Saturday mornings at Jalopy last winter and I used to think of that warm, wood-paneled room as "my church." I loved the brisk walk down there on Saturday before Brooklyn woke up and the class itself was just so marvelous. I signed up for a second class just as the lockdown was coming down. I was devastated to be cut off from this lovely experience. Jalopy eventually picked up the pieces and moved classes to Zoom. Since then, I'm on my third Zoom class and plan to keep on going. It's definitely not the same, but I gotta say there's something really rejuvenating about continuing this connection to the musical world. If you are not an experienced musician, don't be intimidated at all. Jalopy is such a welcoming place for all who are interested in music, and it's a great creative outlet in these challenging times. All the teachers there are really amazing musicians and musical mentors. Check it out!

Yelp
It doesn't get any better than this. It's only about 10 minutes from the F train, but at Jalopy you'll be transported to a different world. It's a vintage instrument repair shop by day, so you'll see greasy workbenches and wires and pliers and strings strewn about; harmonicas in various states of repair; beautifully finished vintage banjos, dobros and guitars hanging all around. One guitar's body is made of a turtle shell! Look for it hanging on the wall. At night, the music shop turns into a music venue -- head down here on a Wednesday night for Roots'n'Ruckus, a folk revue curated by circus ringleader Feral Foster, a great folk singer himself. It's free every time and an icy Tecate from the fridge will only cost you $2.50. But please don't forget to tip the bands! They're hard-working folks and those dollars add up. The bands you won't want to miss (and you'll have a hard time missing them if you go regularly) are Feral Foster, the night's host, and the Bill Murray Experience featuring Jessy Carolina. You'll never hear a voice like this!

Yelp
Cannot say enough good things about this place. As a southern/country girl at heart, this place makes me feel the most at home in NYC. I've been coming here for shows for the past few years and each is better than the last. My cousins booked a show here and came all the way up from North Carolina to play here for one night after I told them it was the best venue in town! I recently started taking banjo classes as well and everyone is so friendly and helpful. They really go above and beyond because they just genuinely love and revere music. So thankful a place like Jalopy in a city full of music venues that are just about making $$.

Yelp
Oh joy, pluckin' at my heartstrings (banjolove and mandolinlove). Sitting or standing, stomping or clapping; this is one of my most favorite reasons to haul mahself across the BQE. Junks on the walls, David Lynch-lookin' stage (let's rock) and some three dollar beers? Oh Eff Yes. (and coffee bevs for the alcoholic/tired) Alex Battles & co, sweet ladyband the Calamity Janes, and others: hoedown-worthy & never disappointing, Then you go outside and cool your brow with the breeze from the water nearby. And sometimes if you are lucky you can get the post-show breakdown bonus jam.

Yelp
A friend recently decided to take up banjo playing and is thus entranced with ol' timey bands. For her birthday, she persuaded us to brave the No Man's Land of Red Hook (this place is right by the toll booths!) to see a fantastic little band here at Jalopy. This place is adorable! The raised stage is framed by heavy red curtains and surrounded by lights, tucking the band in awesomeness. And you, while you stomp your feet and fan yourself, sit in pews and drink from Mason jars. The lack of AC really keeps the vibe of old South alive, too. I took one star away because it is kind of nowhere and the times on the website didn't match the time the band took the stage, thus my friends missed the first couple of songs. Alas!
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
The Fact that Brooklyn has A home for Old Timey music is why I love this city.

Yelp
I won tickets for the Bayou N Brooklyn festival, which caused me to discover this gem of a venue. I went on Saturday and Sunday and had an awesome time. The people who show up here are ready to dance and the vibe was so pleasant and fun. I don't think anyone didn't have a huge smile on their face. I even tried a few steps when I could coerce my boyfriend to ask me to dance. It is about 10-15 minutes from the Carroll G or F stop so it really isn't too hard to get to at all. Check it out!

Yelp
Jalopy has a small stage and the seating resembles pews so it's an odd mixture of feeling like you're in church and at the same moment, rocking out. this place has character in spades. lots of nice quirky details. Note you'll feel like you're completely lost at the brink of the BQE and then, it's right in front of ya. there's a bar next door that lets you bring over the booze for any shows. The vintage guitar collection in the front is a sight to behold. Fits in the previous ly mentioned religious theme. It's great a night out. there's really nothing else like it.
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
The Jalopy is an amazing venue with dynamite entertainment and atmosphere! What might be less well-known about them is their willingness to support nonprofit arts organizations. For example, thanks to Jalopy's generosity... Volunteer-run nonprofit artist collective, Alphabet Arts, will hold its 1st Annual County Fair Monday, May 2, 2011 at Jalopy Theatre. Event details available at www.alphabetarts.org. Live bands, chili cook-off, The Simpsons' Mike Reiss and much more! Don't miss it! Thanks to Jalopy for their support of arts and arts education for ALL!
google avatar

Yelp
Eli and Feral Foster are cultivating something very special at Jalopy. Could go on and on but I don't want it getting more popular than it already is!
google avatar

Alex E.

Yelp
The best folk and ol timey music I age heard in all of Brooklyn. Wednesday night is the free show and it goes late. Not only will I return, I will try to bring everyone I know. The real deal is hard to find and it's even harder to know it when it is staring at you in the face.
google avatar

Yelp
cuuuuuuute!!!! LOVE LOVE the vibe in here. my friend's bluegrass band played here, and although it was packed and there was no AC (and sweatyness ensued) it was great. i love all the old instruments, the throwback americana, the beer/cafe, the cd's, the grunge, the authenticness... i am excited to come back and catch a sweet cozy show to escape the winter months.
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
Jalopy was a really cool experience. It's not typically the kind of place I would frequent, but I was meeting up with some friends there for some live music and drinks. It definitely draws in an eclectic bunch, which was really cool. The drinks were cheap, and the music was great. I like that everyone just flocks in for a grand ol' time; singing, dancing, stomping away... It was fun!
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
If you like Bluegrass, Folk or Traditional American Music, you will give Jalopy five stars too. There is no better place to hear this kind of music in New York. One of the few reasons I was excited to move to Cobble Hill was that I get to be closer to this place. Yes it's a hike and shows are $10, but Abeline is on the way back to the F train. Go there after your show and experience what a weekend in South Brooklyn can be like!
google avatar

Ian A.

Yelp
I have seen some wonderful bluegrass, blues, and general old-timey music. It has good sound, fun church pew style seating, and very reasonably priced beer and wine. I am tempted to take away a star for lack of whiskey, but you can head right next door to the Jalopy tavern and get yourself some Makers Mark. Overall, the Jalopy is a fun alternative night out away from the loud bars. It is also a good place to learn about about new music or bring a date.
google avatar

Kit G.

Yelp
Great music and food. The perfect combination. They have a chef from New Orleans and wonderful southern specials. Had jumbulaya one night and awesome burger the next. Friendly staff and hosts. Saw some great looking salads. The beet salad looked soon good. Saw waffles and fried chicken on the brunch menu. Need to try that next.

Yelp
This is a really intimate theatre - cool place to listen to heartfelt artists perform. Jalopy's vintage pews, and circa 1990 school chairs give this place charm. The seating is limited, so make sure you either purchase tickets online or arrive early. Please be forewarned - The a/c does not kick on high, so in the summer you will risk caching frizzy hair! ;) Also.. no ice. They aren't a full service bar, but you can still purchase chilled beers and sodas. Other than that - enjoy the show :)
google avatar

Rodney A.

Yelp
Old-timely, bluegrass, folkie venue that also does group guitar and banjo lessons. The setup is a bit churchie with a bunch of pews serving as seats and a bunch of grade school chairs. Bottles of beer & wine and some semi-strange musical instrument decor give this place a slightly awkward and quirky vibe but all the regulars seem to love it. Sound quality is a bit strange, too, but I don't mind the bare-bones feel of the place.
google avatar

Tomer B.

Yelp
This is the cutest and intimate place. Bands that come here are all about the music, there is no ego at all. Fun listening being surrounded by good ppl. There are couple of bands I discovered there + every Tuesday there is an open mike if you feel more adventured!!

Yelp
Jalopy is one of those joints where no matter what night you go there, you will see/hear something amazing. And the people who run it are the sweetest, nicest, and down to earth people. Great vibes!! As a musician and audience member, I have always had a kick-ass time there, and in fact I want to find a way to live closer by, so I can go more often! I was sorry to read the review from the person who couldn't get in, but I highly doubt the proprietors would get snarly unless provoked. I wish I could have seen that though. I'm sure even that would have been super entertaining. Love you Jalopy!!
google avatar

Yelp
jalopy is a super-cool hidden treasure nestled ever so serenely practically atop the brooklyn battery tunnel. it lives in a beautiful brick building that was lovingly restored by the very talented proprietors, geoff and lynette. an instantly welcoming space, jalopy is a one-stop shop for all sorts of wonderful things like: music lessons, instrument repair, rare and refurbished older instruments (i bought my manfriend a gorgeous wwII-era banjo there), coffee, live music, film events. it is a great place to take in a show, learn the ukulele, pet some fine dogs, meet great people from the neighborhood and to feel like you are very, very far from new york city at the same time.
google avatar

Nathalie A.

Yelp
Went to see the Little Laffs variety show for kids. Great vibe with the cozy pews, music offerings and community.
google avatar

Adam N.

Yelp
Jalopy might be the best small venue for music in the city, but definitely brookly. The stage looks like its straight out of a vaudville theatre and you can enjoy the music from church pews. The staff ie jeff and lynette are always there and are so accommodating. The music varies from night to night, but there is always something interesting. It is a hike, which kinda sucks, but its definitely worth it

Pandora B.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place more stars, because it's one of the those venues I love to support. It's small and intimate, with an emphasis on eclectic acoustic, folk, bluegrass and world music. It's funky and unpretentious, and you get greeted at the door by a cute little dog named Georgia. (BTW, next door is a restaurant/bar that they own, and although this review is just for the theater, I'll give 4 stars to the bar because it has comfy ambience, they serve good beers and have a cool menu.) Anyway, the problem with Jalopy is that, at least on the night I went there, they were thoroughly disorganized. It took me awhile to get there because it's not in the world's most convenient location. OK, no big deal. But I arrived in plenty of time for what was advertised as a 9 pm curtain for a one-hour show. As a single woman walking alone in a fairly deserted part of Brooklyn, I figured that was something I could do safely. At 8:55 I took my seat and waited while the band wandered in and out, smoked cigarettes outside (I know because I went outside to see what was up), schmoozed with their friends, set up at a leisurely pace and finally started to play at about 10:15. Because I came alone, on foot and had a long walk back to the subway or my apt. (a toss-up), I left at 10:45, having caught half their set at best. What I heard of the band, which played electrified Balkan music, was great. But I doubt I'll return. That kind of loose relationship to the clock is unprofessional and gives me the impression that the Jalopy is mainly a vanity project for musicians and their friends. If the owners care about the general music-loving public, they will get their act together and start their shows on time. August 29, 2017 UPDATE: I've attended several shows since the above review and am happy to report that things have improved with respect to starting on time. But there's still a problem with management. Two nights ago I called, starting a couple of hours before showtime, to confirm who the performers were and to make sure there were still tickets. I called right up until showtime and got their voicemail. Obviously they were "home" because the show did go on. Two potential customers (myself and a friend) did not attend the show because nobody bothered to answer the phone. This is a business?

Yelp
This place just opened this year and it defies all categories. It's a venue for bands, an art gallery, movie theater, and a vintage guitar shop in front. They're also offering music lessons and coffee, and soon they are going to have more events in the space. It's next to Moonshine -- just follow Columbia Street down towards the Battery Tunnel.

Anna B.

Yelp
Well, it's not going to be a proper review as I never actually made it inside. I went to see a friend's band, but the surly man at the door told me the show was sold out. He told me to wait outside for someone to leave. After half an hour of waiting (they were running late and the show hasn't even started) I saw two people leave, and I went inside to ask again. The guy at the door snapped at me: They are coming back! I told you the show was sold out, woman! Wow, I heard they did things differently in Red Hook, but still. I left at that point, and I'm definitely not going back. For $10 cover there are plenty of spots to hear live music without an attitude. Additionally, Jalopy is not easily accessible by subway (the nearest stop is 15 minutes walk away) and the room is apparently tiny, so unless you live in the neighborhood and are coming out to see a band nobody's ever heard of, don't bother.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
This place is a one of a kind. Great great vibe, Quality music, and a wonderful staff. The Jalopy theatre makes NYC a better place!
google avatar

dave c.

Yelp
This place has it all, live roots music, great coffee, cold beer, everything you could want for just about any kind of stringed instrument, art gallery, and great staff. They do lessons for guitar, banjo, uke, and a carter family workshop. Thursday night old time music jam. I wish i had more time to spend there!
google avatar

C.J. T.

Yelp
A fun space for really intimate concerts! Looks sort of like a cross between an old saloon and an old ship captain's quarters. Here you can catch some great bands here (Sweetback Sisters ftw!), ogle/purchase handmade instruments, and drink some beer with friends, all at the same time! Like anything in Red Hook, it's a pain in the ass to get to without a bike or car, but it's worth it.
google avatar

Niki B.

Yelp
This place was great!! Too bad it is such a hike to get there. If I lived in the neighborhood I would frequent more often. They have a great performance space atmosphere, coffee, beer, and you can host a private party there for a decent price. Awesome!
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
so thankful to have this in our lives. Affordable. Fun. Cool. Beautiful productions. Great job!

Layla B.

Yelp
Employees are awesome, knowledgeable, and intelligent. Very cool place! I love the instruments hanging up on the walls. A wonderful, friendly vibe and good hang.
google avatar

Yaphet M.

Yelp
This place is a nice haunt for those who enjoy the avant-garde in a semi-private linoleum club in a neighborhood far away but still close to the G. The drink selection is bland but you really come for the bands - there's a bar next door run by the same woman; you can get your good drink there. Inside the music den, you can feel like everything is possible and it allows your mind to explore those outer possibilities. Beware though, outsider types come here - don't go here looking to be the show.
google avatar

Jeanette D.

Yelp
This place is a music adventurers dream -- interesting new music ranging from honky tonk to singer songwriter to the cutest damn accordion player I've ever seen, and completely affordable. The staff is really chill too, seem like they are all about the love of the music. Drinks and things are great, whether you're in the mood for an herbal tea or a brewsky. I highly recommend it and plan to become a regular myself.
google avatar

nina r.

Yelp
all i need to say is that not only is the whole premise SUPER COOL but he whole place is so far removed from New York City's slickness and pretention that even the bad art was a breath of fresh air. The Jalopy theater made me happy...its is getting harder and harder to find anything authentic these days in New York (that isn't a beloved institution), god bless the Jalopy Theater.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
wow the music here tonight is simply beautiful. great Brooklyn music venue. We saw The Pines. Beautiful.
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
Like other reviews this place has so much potential but seems to be run really loosely. The bar staff in the theatre were disorganized and took forever to get us 2 bottle beers. There were so many chairs set up that it was impossible to cram all the people in for my buddy's record release party so we ended up standing in the back with poor sound. Ticketing to even get in was a bit too laze-faire as we didn't a stamp or wristband or anything so it seemed like anybody could walk in off the street without paying. Overall place has potential but needs a serious management re-evaluation. Another review for the bar tavern next door.
google avatar

Kenny Y.

Yelp
Took a workshop with Steve James today.. Learned some really great music . It was an experience of a life time. He learned the music of our roots from the authors of our time. I am so glad I went ..

Yelp
Apparently 'everyone' knows Jalopy Theatre if you have any sense of what is hip and what's going on in NYC environs. I of course knew nothing but thanks to my hip nephew, we went there for a CAJUN COOKING CLASS though he had been there for many concerts. The owners are absolutely fabulous-felt as if I were meeting old friends from the 60's and the place has that authentic feel of the 60's and believe me, I know. The cooking class did not exactly happen, but I think they had a series of dinners which I bet were delicious and I wish i could go back. I know that running a Music School and theatre AND Tavern is very challenging and I hope that the business of eating does not diminish the kind of and quality ofmusic concerts and lessons they offer. It is not everyday you find an authentic place that serves really good coffee and offers concerts at reasonable prices. Rservations are required because the place is small, but I would go back anytime I was evey remotely near the area.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Great music, great people and a really fun time. They have a small entrance fee (sometimes its free) and have an eclectic mix of events. I only took 1 star off because its far and hard to find parking.
google avatar

Ben Z.

Yelp
Jalopy is the most fun you'll have out of bed. Kind patrons, enough talent to make the city blush and a distinct Hogwartian feel. Go any day of the week and you'll enjoy yourself.
google avatar

Dr Mattastic L.

Yelp
The only problem with this place is that it doesn't have a room for rent upstairs for me and my family. You don't really need to see who is playing before you head on over because it's always joy inducing. I've only been there a handful of times but now that I have wheels, I predict that I may very well become a regular spectator and potential student in the near future. See you soon, Jalopy!

Yelp
I stumbled into the Jalopy about a year ago when I was looking to take lessons for the mandolin that my wife bought me. The group lessons were a remarkable experience. Ernie was a great teacher with an obvious love of music. I have since taken a mountain dulcimer workshop. The music school covers all aspects from dancing, singing and instrument instruction. Learning an instrument has only increased my appreciation for the shows at jalopy. Whenever I walk in I feel as if I am walking into a friends loving room. The quality of the musicians is top notch. The Jalopy is also involved in spreading the appreciation of folk and roots music throughout Brooklyn with events like the Brooklyn Folk Festival. As if all of this was not great enough, they have opened a bar/cafe next door with affordable amazing food.
