"Marketplace for Sustainable Communities Farmers, creatives, and cafes all come together on Wednesdays at the Hooulu Community Farmers Market and Artisans Fair. The market is a brilliant way for tourists to see what the Big Island is capable of producing—in terms of produce, creative works, and in developing a living culture passed down through time. At the Hooulu Market, more than 45 vendors display their products at the Sheraton Resort. Live music fills the air and the aroma of kona coffee blends in with the smells of the sea."

"Where King Kamehameha III Was Born The newly refurbished Sheraton Kona Keauhou Bay Resort is stylish, with a large pool and water slide. But it was the history and the view from the hotel (located off the famous Ali'i Drive) that won me over. The hotel gives you an excellent vantage point to the bay around which King Kamehameha III was born (stillborn, as legend has it). He grew up to become Hawai'i's powerful and benevolent ruler, and sought to unite the people. He called The Big Island his home and is beloved by many. The hotel offers several notable cultural markers, including two heiau (Hawaiian temple) replicas. By Charu Suri"

I went for a conference, so I didn't have time to lounge by the pool, but did get to walk around the property. The manta ray deck is spectacular, and I would stay there again just to see that. The pool is also impressive with the most beautiful views of the ocean. I wish that I could've extended my stay to enjoy the hotel, but I had to get home.||The renovations are also well done, and the rooms are huge. Most hotel rooms in Hawaii are a lot smaller. ||I got the upgrade to the lounge, and it was well worth it. The breakfast was pretty good. They had eggs, breakfast meats, rice, potatoes, and pastries, They had Kona coffee, tea, and local juices. They had wine, beer, and a couple of cocktail choices in the evening with a variety of food including poke. They only negative thing may be that there are birds that fly in, but it's Hawaii, so this is somewhat expected. The lounge staff was also very friendly. They definitely embody the "Aloha Spirit." I wish I could remember all of their names, but I only remember Tessa.||They also had food trucks and a farmer's market on Wednesday, but I'm not sure if they're there on other days as well. Other than that, if you don't have a car, you'll probably have to uber to a restaurant, unless you don't mind walking a little or you could just eat on property. Duke's wasn't open yet, but I think they'll open soon.

Overall, it’s a great hotel. Pretty pricy so make sure to keep that in mind. Rooms were a little small but the view was amazing, clean bathrooms, and beds were comfortable. Wish they were bigger though, not even a couch to sleep on if you have 4+ people. Service was definitely 5 stars, they were nice and helpful. Location is also great! You can go down to the rocks (slippery, watch out) which is the ocean but sadly swimming is pretty much impossible there. If you truly wanted a beach like that, you can drive a little to get there. You can also see manta rays from the hotel at night and even book a boat to drive around on the ocean near the hotel. Massive pool with bar by the side too and a big slide which goes right in the pool. Buffet for breakfast/dinner which has good food. If you don’t mind the cost too much, this is great hotel for your trip!

We made plans to stay at a bed and breakfast, but that didn’t work out for us because the site location was far too remote. An outrigger at the last minute and I was happy they were able to accommodate us at a fairly reasonable price on such short notice. Upon check-in, the staff was very friendly from the valet to the hostess. It was a nice welcome to Kona. We were there for our honeymoon, although we have been married for 28 years And the hotel staff really did welcome us upon checking. We purchased the breakfast option with our hotel reservation, and unfortunately, we weren’t able to use it on the first day, but we were able to use it for two of the four days that we were at the hotel. And I would like to say that the cost that we paid for a brunch style Step above a continental breakfast was extremely overpriced. We enjoyed what we ate, and that was good for us. The location was nice and as Kona itself is laid-back the hotel for the most part was in a quiet area. We saw that they offered a luau show, but unfortunately, the show is only on Tuesday and Thursday and we weren’t able to attend. The bar seem nice and the pool seemed nice, but we didn’t get a chance to experience either of those amenities. We did however enjoy the live music that took place each evening. The bed was comfortable enough, and the room felt clean and comfortable, but I am one of those people like to clean my own hotel room when I arrive and luckily, I didn’t pick up much dirt so that made me feel happy. I will say that being on the highest floor, which is seven, we were still able to hear the frog chirping at night and that got a bit annoying the grounds were beautiful, and it was wonderful to see wildlife in their natural habitat we would definitely stay here again if we are in Kona.

Amazing service altogether, very fast and effective especially the friendly staff at the towel hut! *I believe her name was Malia (gorgeous girl)* helped us book a manta trip, amazing towel service and conversation! I appreciate the staff at the hut had no problem at all playing and talking with my kids.. they loved them! The view from our room was outstanding and my husband and kids had an amazing time overall at the pool. No problems with rooms other than no consistent cleaning .

The best part of the trip was the beautiful sunsets and the soothing sounds of the ocean waves crashing underneath us. The rooms were clean and the staff greeted us with, “ aloha” everywhere we went. The big pool was relaxing and spacious enough for everyone to enjoy. |The grounds were well manicured and the smell of plumerias followed us everywhere we walked. Food and drinks were excellent. I wish I could have stayed longer.

We loved this place! The staff are amazing and thoughtful. The rooms are incredible, and the shower has awesome water pressure. Would suggest going to their in-house shop for snacks and extra beverages but do it earlier than later as the closing time isn't consistent. Walk the path for a relaxing bit of nature and, in the evening, watch the mantra rays feed from the viewing balcony. They have daily events that you need to re-register for. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and relaxing, everything you'd love for a vacation. If you bring the kids, they have a water slide (adults also allowed). Added bonus if you prefer not being around kids... they have a 21+ only pool!

We had an amazing time staying at the Outrigger Kona! I loved watching the beautiful sunsets from all over the property. My kids loved the pool. There was the perfect makeshift “beach” for little kids to play with toys while being in the water. The property is absolutely beautiful with so many flowers and fruit trees all around. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. The Farmer’s market on the front lawn was awesome! So many cool local vendors. The sourdough pizza is a must. There are so many big grass areas for kids to run around and play. The game room is awesome and completely free for guests. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling with kids.

Best experience ever!! Came here for my honeymoon and we could not have asked for a better place to stay. Everything was phenomenal down to the last detail. All the hosts were exceptional, including Tessa and Sharlaine. Everyone made our trip so special and the resort was impecable. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
We stayed at this Outrigger while on the Big Island for a week. The kids really enjoyed the pool (which was heated) and waterslide almost every day. One end of the pool had a sandy area that the kids enjoyed. There is also an adults only pool. There is also a viewing deck where you can see the manta rays come up at night where they shine spotlights into the ocean. I believe this is the only spot you can see manta rays like this on the island, so people take boats out where you can snorkel with the creatures so if you want to do that, this hotel would be very convenient for you. The hotel is surrounded by ocean, but there is not beach as the cliffs are volcanic rock. Grounds are well maintained. The rooms were clean, but the doors were not very thick so there was a lot of hallway noise if that bothers you. The restaurant downstairs has a nice open feel and was quite decent. Hard to get service around the pool as they seemed to be short staffed, but you can order food at the bar and carry it to where you are sitting.

Yelp
Great hotel, friendly people and good location! I usually stay in Waikoloa so this location is very handy for Kailua-Kona and Ali'i Drive. The adults-only pool is a little on the cold side because it doesn't get any sun. The kid's pool with man-made beach, stays warmer longer as it faces the ocean. We were surprised by the one and only bar closing early, so that only the main restaurant remained available past 9pm. At a couple times I went to get a beach towel only to be told "there are no more towels" at 6pm which was incredible news. Also strangely the Manta-Ray viewing deck was poorly staffed and in some areas, roped off. So you couldn't have seen anything if the waves hadn't been crashing like crazy! The room was perfectly comfortable and clean, with mini-fridge to store all your water and drinks, a Keurig coffee maker that came with Hawaiian coffee pods. At a few times, the shower temperature was just so-so, not a blisteringly hot shower, just barely lukewarm. Also there was no additional button to vent steam from the bathroom which made it a little musty. Few things like that could modernize the hotel and make it a little more up to date

Yelp
Simple pros and cons. Dates 11NOV-26NOV PROS Beautiful and unique location Staff Beautiful pool that is ice cold in November. CONS Rooms are weird and have an uncomfortable vibe. It's like being in a studio apartment only its a guest room with literally 3 pieces of furniture. Bed, desk chair and a mid century little chair. The rest of the room is open space. Paper thin walls. If u like hearing ur neighbors have sex this is the resort for you. Very limited food options. Honestly the place feels like a very upscale Motel 6. They have remodeled and obviously didn't have the budget for a decorator. If you're gonna stay.in the Kona area it's the best I believe. But it's all about the outside and not the rooms. VRBO next visit. Other islands have real resorts Kona doesn't unless u go north to the $800 a night parade of pretentious idiots crowd.

Yelp
Staying overnight in Kona, Big Island, Hawaii... I met my friend at her hotel: Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa. Luckily, she knew the layout of the property because I was lost. It's a large area with several buildings. I had no map... I just followed her. The most important things to know are: 1. It's an open-air style. If you're not used to humidity... hmmm... and the breakfast buffet area had some flies and birds. 2. Plan your restroom usage well. There's none in the reception area. There's one at the building by the parking lot... and - in your room. There are activities at the resort that you can pay for... like the Manta Ray experience... that's in the evening? And probably is pricey. We walked around the beautiful garden and swimming pools, but even in the September morning (around 9am), it was hot for us. We just wanted air conditioning! LOL! I was told that the rooms, restaurant, and other common areas were nicely renovated. Duke's is coming soon, so it might get busier. This resort is about half an hour from the airport and Costco. There's nothing much in the immediate area.

Yelp
Was able to get a day pass here. (Reserved ahead of time) great place to eat, swim, and drink. Very nice area, hotel and staff. Highly recommend staying here. They also have a look out area where you can watch the manta ray night tours. Recommend the chicken Caesar salad and the chicken wings.

Yelp
This hotel was very pleasant. They had farmer's market near the entrance of the hotel. My only complaint was, we went to the lei making class, and the instructor told us it was full and asked us to leave. I thought it was so rude. We could just sat at the other table and observe. Or why can't you set up more stations. While we went to the bracelet making class, and Niko, the instructor, was so nice and pleasant.

Yelp
When you can spend it, spend it wisely on hotels like these! Yes, the hotel is having an upgrade but the construction noises are minimal. What worked for us (couple with a 1 year old toddler) - New rooms are clean and upgraded well, we just hoped it had more storage than fancy/styling lamps - Waiele cafe food was great for breakfast and sometimes dinner but the breakfast buffet is almost the same everyday. after few days, we got bored! - pool and the kiddie pool is maintained well! - beautiful garden to walk around the property - They give you free water bottles and there are water filling stations across the property! you never have to buy water while you are here! what to consider - Valet parking is good when you check-in as the regular parking has lots of walking to be done! - There is no beach to swim, its all rocky. there is a beach nearby Huge thanks to Michael, Parker, Frankie, Kiara for all the help at the reception and our requests! We did had some background story to our room, here are some details: We reserved the upgraded garden view but when they gave an option for free upgrade for Ocean Front, I reluctantly took it understanding that it is not upgraded and we will decline if we don't like it. We saw the Ocean front and did not take it as it was not upgraded and given that we saw how the upgraded unit, looked like, we did not want to go back to an old one! But I personally missed the Ocean Front for the uninterrupted view of ocean and the sound of sea waves crashing against the lava rocks!

Yelp
Just to clear up other reviews there was NO construction going on while we were there for 5 nights over Christmas. I believe this place used to be the Sheraton which was bought by Outrigger. Outrigger went above and beyond with making things personalized, very kind staff (everyone says hello, good morning, our cleaning lady KNEW MY NAME!). I'm very appreciative they had lots of Christmas decorations, Santa, hot drinks in the lobby with cider and rum! The restaurant had great food for dinner and you must try the espresso martinis. Pros Daily fun activities for adults Adult pool Nice bed and quality sheets Kind and professional Staff Coffee - macadamia white chocolate lattes are Walking distance to Four Winds snorkeling Resort farmers market Big, nice gym with peloton bikes Pickle ball, basketball, tennis for free Room Key is a wristband Cons Breakfast buffet is not good Kids screaming Expensive drinks- but they do not skimp on alcohol! Charge for self parking Lunch Ahi bowl was very pitiful and $28

Yelp
We booked our vacation through Costco travel. We spent 4 days in Hilo and 2 in Kona. The hotel we stayed at in Hilo was extremely disappointing so we had low expectations coming into this one. Upon arriving, I could tell this resort had it together. The check in process was flawless. The lobby was beautiful! The two gals who checked us in were beyond helpful. They ensured we got everything included in our Costco package applied to our room. We rented a car so we did have to pay the $25 a night for self parking, no big deal for us. There was plenty of parking in there lot. Your hotel key is on a wristband which is the smartest thing ever. I don't know why more resorts don't do this. When we entered our room, we had a sigh of relief. This is exactly what we thought we were walking into in Hilo. The room was very clean and updated. We had the most gorgeous outlook on our patio which included a 6 person table and 4 chairs! We immediately walked the entire resort to checkout everything they had. I won't list everything but here's what really impressed us. Pools: They have 2 pools side by side with the bar in the middle. A pool for everyone to enjoy, which included a water slide and 2 small wave pools. On the other side is the adults only pool with a waterfall. We spent all our time in the adults only pool. During our time here, we were always the only two people in the adults only pool. It was so relaxing not having kids screaming and splashing next to us. Plus having the bar right there was a bonus because we could order drinks and bring them over to the pool. Piko coffee and wine bar: They have a grab and go counter that is similar to Starbucks. They have a showcase of yogurt parfaits, muffins, and sandwiches that you can order to go. They also have coffees and alcoholic drinks. We had breakfast here twice and the barista remembered our order after the first day. How sweet is that! We had dinner here one night too. We ordered drinks and the ribeye. It was okay, it wasn't impressive but we went there for convenience. Holoholo market: An easy quick stop store if you need something you forgot to pack. It is overpriced but that's what you get with stores at hotels. They have a lot of toiletries and medications if you're in dire need of something. Overall, we loved this place. We wished our entire week long vacation was at this resort. We're still kicking ourselves for spending 4 days in the horrible hotel in Hilo when we could've been spending all our time here. We definitely will stay here next time we visit.

Yelp
We loved our stay at the Outrigger in Kona. It is a beautiful property. The room was very beautiful and we had a partial ocean view. The grounds are immaculately kept. There are two large pools, but there is not a beach. This was not a problem because we had a car and there were several beaches that were quite nice very close by. The restaurant lobby and hallways are all open air. The weather was beautiful there in November. Also, the hotel is very close to the boats to take you snorkeling or to swim with the manta rays. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Kona Outrigger Hotel and Spa We spent 7 nights at the Outrigger Hotel and Spa on Kona. It was a little 'long in the tooth' but, overall it was a nice hotel. There was some construction going on because of refurbishing and updating. Below are our comments which relate only to our personal experience. We upgraded our room from 'partial ocean' view to ocean view. Our room was large and comfortably furnished including a desk, large screen tv on the wall and spectacular view of the ocean. The bathroom was clean and adequately stocked with linens. My only negative comment regarding the room was the bed. I prefer sleeping on a firm mattress with firm pillows. The mattress on our bed was either very old or just too soft. When I lay down on the bed, the middle sagged like I was sleeping in a hammock. It was terribly uncomfortable but maybe that was just me. The upgrade was purely worth it for the view. The hotel was built on an old lava flow and our room sat on the ocean edge of the ancient flow. There was a large coral growth where you could often see fish. The hotel also has a manta ray viewing spot overlooking an area by the back patio. We could actually see the mantas from our patio deck. Also, we could see the manta viewing excursions who were only 200 yards off the back of the hotel. The hotel has a large oceanside area where they have lit the ocean with floodlights at night. You can sit on the edge of the ocean where the lights are shining and watch the manta rays come in to feed on the plankton. We sat out there one night and there were 7 large mantas that had come in to feed. It is really fascinating to watch them. Although we were notified before we made our reservation the Outrigger Hotel and Spa does not currently have an operational Spa. Now, let's talk about food. Currently, they only have one restaurant which is their pool level café. I found the menu to be extremely limited and very expensive. We only ate dinner there once on the night we arrived. The food was fairly good but nothing to write home about. They also served breakfast there. I'm a light breakfast eater so I would order from the menu (also limited) rather than take the buffet. I'm from Las Vegas so I know from expansive buffets that run $40 to $100 but this was not that. It was expensive and (by my experience) limited. Now that I have talked about the café, I want to talk about the pool bar. The pool bar had a menu of sandwiches, burgers, fish tacos and other expected items. Because this food was so much better than the café, we frequently ate at the pool bar. The service there was fun, the food was served hot and was very tasty. The resort has two very large pools. One pool in adjacent to the café and is for adults only. This pool is accented by a large waterfall at one end that was fun to hang out in or around. The other pool is for families and children and is accented by a long, curving waterslide that is the fastest one I have ever been on. It was a blast to go down, even if I'm nearly 80 years old. There is a small market where you can pick up some snacks or souvenirs and there is a small coffee spot at the back of the market. Speaking of coffee, there is a coffee bar adjacent to the café on the pool level if you aren't interested in sitting at the café to eat. The personnel that we dealt with while staying there were all helpful and very pleasant. I especially want to point out Monette who made sure I had my coffee in the café; Lana at the pool bar and especially Servanda who was our room attendant during our stay. She was very honest and so helpful. There was also Kevin at the pool bar and Toa at the pool towel hut. All in all, our stay at the hotel was pleasant. I would give it a 7 out of 10 and the only downgrade was for the food.

Robert C.

Yelp
We just came for drinks at the Holua outdoor bar and lounge near the pool area. I was impressed with my Pineapple Mule which had pineapple vodka, pineapple juice and ginger beer. I thought this might just be the run of the mill beverage short in alcohol but I was wrong. It seemed like he added more ingredients than the three listed but whatever he did I really favored my drink. I recommend this libation. We were interested in knowing more about the manta rays at night and probably will return.

Shannon C.

Yelp
Beautiful property. If you are looking for a place to stay that is quiet with gorgeous ocean views this is the place for you! Very relaxing and amazing staff! If you get a chance to book a manta ray snorkel excursion do it! One of the top excursions I've been on and located a short walk from the property. Looking forward to coming back!

Tracy C.

Yelp
2nd stay and 2nd review...yes it is in the middle of being renovated, but we have had a great time, every time and the cheaper rates reflect the slight upset in some areas. Our room had 2 comfy double beds, hot water and cold AC, and a great view of both the sea and the garden. We received birthday chocolates and a decorative birthday towel on the bed, and Kamaaina rates. This time I spent a lot of time on the slide and in the pools and really enjoyed it. Both the family pool and the 21+ pool. We ordered drinks and food at the pool and they were delivered quickly and definitely hit the spot, especially the smoked fish dip. The manta ray viewing platform is a great area to hang out with a cocktail at night, and down by the chapel you can swim in the sea and hang out. We managed to book in for a manta ray expedition and loved it! We hadn't realized they get so close to you!! I know the hotel is old, but is has great architectural bones, has some great renovated areas, a store with everything you could want including clothing, food, booze, coffee, toys and tourist chat to buy, easy parking and it is in an amazing area.

Yolanda M.

Yelp
Positive: Great location for manta Ray snorkeling or viewing, nice pools, not overly crowded, hotel staff was nice. Negative: 1. Construction is noisy 2. Game room looks finished but it was closed during our 7 night stay 3. Laundry machines need quarters and a couple of times when we went to get change they only had enough for one load to wash and dry. 4. 8 fitness center gym machines didn't work. 6 of them have out of order signs but 2 others need them also. 5. Various leaking ceilings (manta ray viewing deck area) 6. Evening pool towel dispensers are frequently out of towels

Amanda H.

Yelp
Pros: Ambience, welcome and open hotel. WONDERFUL FAMILY POOL! Lots of options and gift shop isn't outrageous!!! Mgr Octavia, Tim at the pool. Cons: *that we did not initially book our hotel here* We did a day pass here and rented a cabana. I was so happy with the Pool & Pool Bar & Grill. We spent 9am -7pm and had an absolute blast! Tim was our pool waiter. He was diligent, very polite and fun. He had an absolute awesome attitude!! We did have an issue later on in the afternoon. I didn't go to staff about it but they witnessed the situation and Manager Octavia came up to my family and I to check on us. Great customer service, attention to detail and the empathy and just being heard! PROS! Octavia & Tim gave such a great and welcome demure that I want to book my stay through the outrigger just for them alone! Highly recommend!!!

Summer C.

Yelp
We had reserved a room in October for a resort view. When we arrived to our room we were looking at parking lot. For the amount of money spent on the room we were not happy. We went to the front desk and "Jamie" helped us out. She allowed us to be moved to a new room with a view of the gardens. Mahalo Jamie.

Eva G.

Yelp
I stay at this property a lot when I'm in Kona. The last year they were doing a lot of construction. They moved the check in area in from of the large windows but we still have access to experience the view. This hotel is away from town, about 7 miles walking distance. ( I actually walked into town once!) or you can check the hours for the shuttle into town. There are some beautiful areas to enjoy along the property. Also if you want to walk up a hill about a mile or so , there is a small shopping area. The hotel itself has a nice pool with slide and an adult pool as well. The rooms are now a bit updated ( still have popcorn ceilings) and depending where your room is you may have a really nice view of the ocean.

Skye D.

Yelp
We enjoyed the night we spent here 11/18/24. The manta spot light is super cool. Miss the old restaurant and bar. Hopefully something good fills the spot. Room was comfortable property is right next to kona town. We did find better rates on a travel site than what they were asking. they offered matched it.

Johnathan V.

Yelp
Housekeeping either didn't clean my room or missed a lot of things. Pretty Gross to be sleeping next to someone's used eye lashes. Didn't notice last night due to the power going off. Went to have breakfast this am and waited an hour for one omelette. It never came out. When I asked the server she said let me ask the kitchen. Then she tells me wait 10 more minutes. I understand being on island time and taking thinks at a slower pace but they're just outright lazy here. Never again

Brian M.

Yelp
Wonderful resort in a beautiful cove that you won't want to leave. If it wasn't for the dinner at night I would stay here again. The restaurant serves an incredible breakfast but the dinner at night is a C- you should avoid. You are better off getting snacks from the grocery store or getting a Uber delivered. I found a Thai restaurant like 10 minutes away in a shopping mall that was better.

K K.

Yelp
A big shout out to Mila, who cleans up after messie guesties, and Tiana at the front desk for her efficiency and personal touch at our check out. It's the people who made our stay so pleasant. We live on the Big Island and when we need a break, we now know that this spot will offer us a lovely stay with lovely people. Mahalo nui loa to all the hard-working staff at the Outrigger; you are the best. p.S. our room was serene, comfortable and quiet. And very clean.

Kendell B.

Yelp
This rating is JUST for the manta ray viewing deck. My mom and I wanted to see the manta rays without having to book a tour or get in the after, and we heard that was possible by going to the Outrigger! We came here the day before we planned to go just to scope it out. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. When it came time to watch the manta rays, we arrived around 8:30PM. We parked on the street and then walked up to the hotel. Once there, we made our way to the manta ray deck. They have an elevator available to access it or stairs. There is also a ramp available once on the deck instead of a couple of stairs. We ended up seeing two manta rays! They were so majestic. I was surprised there weren't more people down there watching with us. There were only around 10 people, and there were seats available to watch from. You won't see a ton of rays here as they are all drawn to where the tours are with the lights, but even just seeing one or two is such an amazing experience. Probably not the best for young kids unless you have something else for them to be doing; there's a fair amount of waiting involved. We were thankful to find out about this; it was one of the top things we did while visiting!

Kyle B.

Yelp
Loud ac in the room and very dry Parking is not free Hot water didnt work at first. Took a long time to heat up Food is extremely expensive, almost 30 dollars for many items

Mis M.

Yelp
This hotel is so beautiful. Every staff member is friendly. Food options were kind of limited but on our last day, we ordered our breakfast takeout and took it to an empty table in the manta ray viewing area and was able to enjoy an ocean view breakfast. There are many seats spread out in the common areas that were always empty. Pool is fun and lots of seating open. If we come back to kona, this is definitely the hotel we'll stay at again

Ben T.

Yelp
Mixed review. The good: the property is beautiful and well maintained. The rooms are nice, the pool is amazing. All the groundskeepers, lifeguards, cleaning staff and restaurant workers are super nice. The bad: let's talk about reception. Oh my. We arrived at night after a long day of travel. The compound is huge. The front desk scribbled some hieroglyphics on a map and pointed us down a hall. The property is recently remodeled and sprawling. The signage needs improving. We wandered around with our luggage trying to find our room for a while. I went back to reception and asked for help finding our room. The front desk called security who sent 3 assholes who promptly came to reception and started whispering to front desk dude. After standing there for 4 more minutes listening to their whispers and not being shown to my room, I walked away and by this time my kid found our room. After putting my bags down I came out of the room and those 3 security guard assholes were standing outside my room. I asked them why they followed me to my room and they said "we were here sir". Yes, you were here because you followed me to my room. I know because I just saw you in the lobby. Weirdo's. Not sure what they are paying these 3 fools for. I would ask for a refund on those paychecks. The next night our friend wanted to visit. We asked everyone at reception and no one could tell us the street address to relay. How do you know not the address of the building you work in? Last, the WiFi. The system allows 1 device per room and you have to log into WiFi every single time you use the device. Of course there's an offer to upsell more devices or a stable WiFi. Just seems super cheap to me, especially from an upscale resort to charge per device. The place has potential but needs to invest in front desk staff and training. Just charge another $10 a night and provide basic WiFi for all devices. No reason to be cheap in an upscale resort.

Yelp
First of all the Hotel is very old and dingy!! We booked a Resort pass to enjoy the day!! Before I even booked it I called front desk to confirm the charge under The RESORTPASS APP ( this app is a bogus so don't even book with them coz they will never answer the phone!!!) We spoke to a lady name DORA she made us booked it and when we got there , they want more charges to get in, clearly we call and was told to booked it!!!!! DORA didn't even came out to help or apologize first the miscommunication she caused!!!! By the way the Blonde lady who received and rude attitude at the front desk has major bad breath!! I almost gag in front of her while she's explaining the charges!!! That's all, Hotel was old anyway and the pool is not that fancy to pay $85.00 per person to use it!!! I'll go to the ocean next time!!

Yelp
It'a absolute paradise here. Two warm pools. You have one that is 21+ and the other has a waterslide. The staff is amazing! Clean and quiet too. The property is huge. Lots of spots to relax and look at the spectacular views. They had chairs everywhere. This is a must stay!

Yelp
Great hotel and service was on point. All the staff were very helpful and went above and beyond. The remodeled rooms feel luxurious and comfortable. Currently they are going thru an overdue remodel so there will be some construction noise during the weekdays if you're hanging out on the property at that time. However, the pool areas are great and there's an amazing water slide that's worth every penny. The views of Keauhou Bay are breathtaking and worth every penny. It's walking distance to the many boat tours that operate out of there. In addition, there is a farmers market that operates at the front lawn Wednesdays. We booked the Ocean View/pool view room, which also provided access to the lounge. This is a great deal as you'll get Breakfast and Afternoon snacks for free. If you're looking for a complete resort on the Kona Side, this is the place.

Yelp
Loved this resort! There's definitely room for improvements but I thorough enjoyed my stay here. On property, they have different events that happen every day, they have a convenient market with essentials, 2 pools (deepest is 4 feet), a kiddy pool, and a fun water slide! They have a pool side bar. They have beach chairs and umbrella for rent ($42/day). Parking is $25/day.

Yelp
**This Review is not the rooms...just for the drinks/view** Our last night here in Kona and we found this beautiful hotel to check out near our Airbnb for some sunset views. Stunning sunset here and we heard that the Manta Rays come here often at night. We waited with drinks in hand and others said they hadn't seen the Manta Rays in a long time here. This night there ended up being over 6-7 that were seen on tours right off shore and about 2-3 you could see from the outside seating area. Such a sight to see! It's just so beautiful watching these animals swim in the water like that. Definitely a secret spot to check out if you are in the area!

Yelp
Read all the reviews before booking. I wish we had. We have stayed here several times and this was by far the worst . I do have to say that all of the staff were absolutely wonderful! The new club lounge was great , but that's about it. There is construction . They'll actually put you in a room next to it. The noise is very loud, it goes on at 7 AM till 5pm. even the elevators are under construction, The pool bar is closed. !! They have one restaurant the food is very mediocre. The water does take a long time to get hot. We paid $600 for a club room. It was definitely not worth the price. We have been trying to reach management and no one is returning calls or answering any emails. Very poor management!! most disappointing is the Rays on the Bays restaurant is closed down , never redone after Covid, which was by far the best restaurant in Kona with amazing views!!

Yelp
Valet was so welcoming and the front desk check in was a breeze and delightful. Dinner drinks and live music was poolside and awesome! Staff was amazing.

Yelp
There is a lot of construction going on. Additionally, full ocean view can mean parking lot view with some ocean view. You need oceanfront to get the few rooms facing the ocean. The staff is great and it's a beautiful historic property used by Hawaiian chiefs for ceremonies hundreds of years back. The restaurant and cafe are pricy but good. The pool is great for kids and he loved the water slide. I recommend the luau there. The food is great served directly to you (not a buffet). The quality was excellent.

Yelp
First we arrived at 5:30pm and our room wasn't ready. Check in was at 4pm. We were told to hang out on the property for a short waiting time and they didn't have our room ready until 8pm...RIDICULOUS. We were staying one night and weren't even able to check in till 8:30pm. There were no parking spots available. Room smelled like weed. The common areas were decent but overall the experience was not great. Pool looked nice.

Yelp
This hotel was nice. We stayed for 7 nights. There were definitely things we liked and did not like. First, the room was comfortable, and always very clean. House keeping was good except for the fact they are very inconsistent as far as when we could except our room to be cleaned. For example they may come at 9am, or 6pm, or 2pm, basically whenever it was convenient for them. So that was sometimes frustrating to come back to a room that still wasn't made. Also they knew we had 4 guests in our room but only put in 3 bath towels, so we had to keep calling the front to request an extra towel everyday. Plus if they saw that 2 cups of coffee were missing everyday, it would have been nice to receive 2 more cups and coffee replacements every day. The pool itself was clean but the decks never seemed hosed down. There were always leaves and rocks all over the decks by the lounge chairs and getting out of the pool w bare feet was gross bc rocks and leaves were always stuck to our feet. Bird poop was often on the lounge chairs too. The resort rooms were renovated with touch ups, nice carpet, and bath, but the game room and some restaurants were still not quite ready. Same with the manta ray viewing deck. Not yet ready or finished. The location was perfect for snorkeling tours, manta ray tours, and paddle boarding. Loved that! Walking distance. The stores nearby were great too. Too bad all local (good food) closed between 1 and 4pm. The restaurant at the Outrigger was a nice ambiance, but too pricey and the reviews weren't great so we opted not to eat at the hotel. When it came time to check out, we needed and extra 30 minutes but were not accommodating. At exactly 11am, checkout time, our wristbands didn't work so getting the rental car out of the parking lot was an extra step, and they shut off our AC in the room. Interesting that everyone around here runs on "Hawaiian time," but check out is no exception, strictly 11am.

Yelp
We stayed here for two weeks to celebrate our 10yr anniversary and have absolutely no complaints. The room was comfortable and the pool and amenities were great too. Grace coordinated our celebration and Nani was the officiant (such a sweet and thoughtful lady! Ashley Ryan from Malihini Keiki babysat our two kids. This was our first time hiring a babysitter but Ashley put us at from the start and my kids took to her right away! She was very easy going and accommodating and never rushed us making our special day easier. We highly recommend Ashley for anyone needing someone reliable and sweet to come to their hotel and watch the kids!

Yelp
The Outrigger Kona is an older hotel property and seems as if it hasn't been updated in the 90's. It's located in a beautiful spot right off the water but isn't really close to much else if you want to leave the resort. There is a strip mall that is a 15 minute walk away but most of the restaurants and shops are a 20 minute drive away. The hotel is spacious and the property has 2 pools (one for families, one for adults), one restaurant, large gift shop, a gym and walking trails. Best of all, there's a cove where one can watch the manta rays at night from the bar! The manta ray viewing tours come into the cove so it was pretty cool to see them from the comfort of the hotel. The sand beach is located next to the hotel so the road leading to the hotel is filled with cars and beach goers walking to and from the site. The rooms are pretty big and come with a refrigerator and a nice sized lanai. I was able to watch many a sunrise from there and work from the table and chair set up outside with a decent wifi connection. I also observed quite a few people working at various sites around the property. As mentioned the hotel is old and pretty dated but the property is clean. There are multiple buildings throughout the property. Our building had an elevator and was located near the conference center and overlooked the parking lot and faced the mountain. I only ate dinner once in the hotel restaurant and it was okay. It was a bit pricey but the food was decent. Given the other reviews I was a bit worried but didn't need to be. The restaurant provided entertainment during the dinner hour, which was nice. Parking is split between valet and self parking. I was told that when all the spaces are taken one can park on the grass. Thankfully we were always able to find a spot.

Yelp
This is our first time staying here and I was not too impressed. To begin, the rooms were apparently "renovated" but it appears that they were only painted. There were lots of corners cut with this renovation, as several paint splats can be seen throughout the bathroom, tub and wash room area. They also skimped on removing the popcorn ceiling and there was some peeling in the corner of our room. There is poor ventilation in the room and upon entering, you can feel the humidity hit you! To put it into perspective, your bath towels are somewhat damp even before using them! The bathroom has a vent, but no fan and I don't believe the vent was working to at leastlet the air conditioning in. My kids commented that the bedding felt damp as well. We did our best with what we were given, but not feeling comfortable at night and not sleeping well is the worst especially when you're on vacation. The sheets were very dingy and had random stains on them! The room didn't appear to be cleaned thoroughly either. Little details were overlooked like proper dusting and cleaning up random hairs! Fortunately, we were not bothered by any construction noise. Most likely due to the fact that the air conditioning is extremely loud! The grounds are nice and my boys enjoyed being able to play basketball and pickle ball at the courts. The staff is also very kind. One downfall is the lack of beach access by this hotel. You need to take a short drive to be able to get in the ocean. That's an issue for us as our main reason to visit Hawaii is to spend lots of time enjoying the ocean. We booked this hotel mainly for the pool since there's a water slide and it helps keep my boys entertained. There's also a 21+ pool which is a nice amenity, but I would trade that to have them truly upgrade the rooms a bit more, starting with ventilation. I also feel they should have more options for sleeping. They only offer 2 (small) double beds or 1 king. Even for a family of 4, 2 double beds aren't the best sleeping accommodations! Should we visit this island again, I feel we will get better accommodations and value if we look into airbnbs. We most likely won't get a water slide, but a good night's rest and good ventilation pare more important!

Yelp
This place is absolutely stunning! It was our first time staying here and in Kona. We stayed in several other places on the island, but this was our favorite! We were met at the desk by Cherry. She was amazing, so helpful and so incredibly nice! She gave us our first impression and did not disappoint! Everyone here from the bar to the restaurants were great! The food was fantastic and the pool was unbelievable! The rooms are large and very quiet! We will be staying here again whether on this island or another!

Yelp
Recently stayed here and as always, I prefer breaking my review down to two sections as follows: THE GOOD: *Beautiful views along the coastline and the waters that surround. *Manta Ray viewing deck which keeps you on land and above where the Mantas populate - however once the tour boats release out, their lights and feeding attract the population away from the hotel. *Nice pool set up for all ages - the interior pool set aside for 21+ is certainly inviting. *The rooms are spacious and recently renovated. *If you love Manta Rays, this could be your place. Every night the roadway in gets packed with lined up cars waiting to go on a cruise or simply to rent a surfboard or snorkel set to enter the water at the harbor and float among the Rays. THE NEEDS ATTENTION: *The staff try to be friendly, but something is a bit off and I couldn't put my finger on it. A good customer service re-orientation could resolve most of their issues. For example, the bartender in their cafe seemed to be bothered by someone ordering a drink. Odd, isn't it? *They're currently under major renovations and re-construction. As a result, there is lots of construction activity throughout the resort. You'll often see building materials and truss throughout the areas. Lots of earth moving as well. Noise seems to be somewhat controlled, however I was facing the ocean and not all rooms face that way. *The food outlets were pretty underwhelming. Granted most are closed during this renovation period, but they should have better anticipated. *Getting service/attention - similar to first point - it's virtually impossible to reach anyone via the in room phones. They go on ringing forever. Still to this day have no idea if they have room service bc nobody ever answered the phone when I was there. *No beachfront - perhaps the greatest disappointment is that there is zero accessible shoreline. Thats a major tease for someone coming to Hawaii - it's a must to dip in to the inviting waters. The closest place to access the water is in the fairly dangerous adjacent harbor. *The areas around the hotel need attention and perhaps the renovation will help - however some of the structure is in poor shape. *The guest room upgrades were somewhat basic - Outrigger is somewhat synonymous with Holiday Inn on the Mainland. Beds were comfortable and the TV worked really well as did their internet so A+ for those areas.

Yelp
Another last resort?? I stayed at this property for just one night this past weekend. I'm not sure if this hotel has met the criteria to be called a resort, but from a guest's point of view, it has a long way to go. NOTES: 1. Parking available for a daily fee: $12.50/self or $35/valet. We chose to self-park; space is plentiful in the lot. The room key allows guests to enter and exit the lot, just hold your key against the sensor. 2. The property is comprised of multiple buildings. Make sure to obtain a map at check-in. 3. There are two pools on property: one for families, complete with kiddie pool and water slide, and the other for adults (its strategically located by the bar). PROs: 1. The property is expansive and beautiful, with its gardens and grass well maintained. It sits on the coast with views of the ocean and surrounding areas. 2. Friendly staff at check-in desk. The young woman that assisted us was very friendly, patient, and expertly answered all our questions about parking and checking out the next day. She gave us the info about the room key doubling as an access card to the self-park lot. 3. Our room was spacious, and thankfully also included a refrigerator. Other amenities included a decent size flat screen tv, multiple charging outlets, and in-room safe. CONs: 1. The room and buildings are in desperate need of a upgrade, repairs, and refurbishment. Our room seemed like it remained untouched from the 70s or 80s. 2. The bathroom was HORRIBLE. Firstly, it needs a major renovation to everything: tile, plumbing, shower head, etc. The water pressure was incredibly awful....it was pretty much non-existent. Also, the drain was clogged in the shower and the water backed up every time someone used it. 3. There was no cold water, but there was an extreme abundance of hot water for some reason. Also, the water pressure for the bathroom sink mirrored that of the shower....very absent. 4. Our room was in wing 3 of the complex, and for some reason this building did not have an elevator. We were instructed to make our way to wing 4, take the elevator in that building, and walk across to wing 3. This did not make any sense to me at all! I just didn't understand why elevators wouldn't be included in all guest buildings. BOTTOM LINE: I would not stay here again.

Yelp
Awesome awesome hotel! This was our first trip to Hawaii and we're not disappointed. Yes the hotel is undergoing renovation but we were too busy adventuring around the island to be bothered by that. We also lucked out and were given a room that had already been renovated as well as a complimentary upgrade to oceanfront. Win win! This hotel is awesome! I love they have an adult's only pool with complimentary cabanas. When we checked in we were given free leis and reusable water bottles. Love that you can refill your bottle at any of the water refill stations scattered around the property. The location is amazing with a manta ray viewing deck. Very cool! Also being under renovation the hotel was only about half full so it was quieter and had breathing room. Service and cleanliness were impeccable. We also attended the Feast and Fire Luau the last night we were there and even though it rained we had a blast! I can't wait to go back Hawaii and stay here again! We love it!

Yelp
The most unkept hotel I've ever stayed in! Though the staff are friendly it cannot outweigh the terrible atmosphere. I have to stay here often due to business obligations and unfortunately this is the hotel that is frequently booked. To start off on a long list of problems I would say that they are CONSTANTLY under construction. The game room is frequently closed down, it would be open one day then closed the next! Half the equipment in the gym is broken including several treadmills, a stepper, and a lat pull down, it's been months and still hasn't been fixed. Moving onto the actual room issues....which seem to be endless. The bed is always uncomfortable and lumpy! It doesn't matter which floor, room, or wing I seem to be in THEY ARE ALL TERRIBLE BEDS. They are lumpy, lopsided, and have zero to no support at all. I had a bed so bad once I ended up calling housekeeping for 4 pillows so that I can sleep on those pillows and support my body properly. The toilets don't flush properly in some room and sometimes when I check in the bathrooms are dirty! I'm talking stains in the toilet dirty. Sometimes on the sofa I find trash under the pillows as well. The only reason I'm giving them a 2 star is because of some of the kind staff, other than that it would be a zero if I could.

Mursalin H.

Yelp
It would be one star, the property shows its age. It needs upgrade urgently. Everything feels so stuck in the 80s. The toilet was wobbly, there was gap in the bathtub installation. Furnitures are aged. We were three peoples in the room, they kept giving us only two set of towels, had to request for one extra set each day we were staying in. The only shop in the hotel was under staffer. Restaurant was just a OK. In the land of Kona coffee, it was frustrating to see espressos were made from automated machine. The view from the lobby or from the room was brilliant. The manta ray viewing from the deck was otherworldly. The lava formation and the garden were Hawaiian bucolic. This hotel has so much potential to be one of the best and iconic in the big island, I hope the management really pays attention to the service and upgrades. We paid ~500 per night, we wont mind paying that if such are addressed. What a view, what a location and absolutely memorable manta viewing.

Emma H.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our stay here! Absolutely stunning with clean rooms and an awesome pool. There is a great market up the road if you want some snack for your room. Night time snorkeling with the manta-rays is a MUST!

Michelle A.

Yelp
Dined at the restaurant and enjoyed the manga days! I'd been to the cafe previously and had the best coconut crusted mahi mahi of my life!

Jennifer B.

Yelp
NEVER STAY HERE. Wi-Fi is 3 mps. Even if you pay extra. There's no spa. No pool bar. Constant construction. No one cares. The meal I ate had two foreign objects embedded in the food. One was something frozen inside of a fried spring roll. The other was something inside of a cooked hamburger. Creepy! I was shocked by how horrible this experience was. They are revamping the hotel. They should not be having guests here during the process. HORRIFIC!

Noel C.

Yelp
We celebrate my wife birthday at Big Island and we stayed at Outrigger Kona Resort for a week, housekeeping staff were superb, they take care us very well for the duration of our stay.
