The Scran and Scallie

This was our third day in Edinburgh, and we chose Scran & Scallie for a couples’ night out. They absolutely set the bar. It was worth the wait from start to finish—the food and service were nothing short of amazing. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. Our server (whose name I regret not catching) was fantastic—attentive, kind, and clearly passionate about making the evening special. Side note: have a great time in NY next year. Thank you again! I tried their haggis—my second time—and I think it may have just become my new favorite dish. My main course was cod, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. My partner started with the soup and followed with fish and chips—classic, comforting, and beautifully done. We finished with sticky toffee pudding, the perfect sweet ending to an already incredible meal. Scran & Scallie did not disappoint. Thank you to the entire team for making our night in Edinburgh so memorable.

I got help from a host with blonde hair and glasses (didn’t catch her name i’m extremely grateful) on 07/10/25 around 4:50pm who helped me get seated early even though my reservation was at 5:30pm. I just helped by John who told me all the specials and helped me with a wine recommendation. Ended up getting the haggis which were amazing. The steak with was also amazing + added in broccoli also amazing. Desert was sticky toffee pudding which was a great way to end the meal. Extremely satisfied with this restaurant and the staff!

I was in Edinburgh last Saturday evening for dinner with a friend. We booked quite far in advance as I was over from Canada. We were seated next to 2 very young children that were screaming initially and I have to say, I was quite concerned about how the night would go. Starters arrived of scallops and haggis and both were very well received, I had high hopes for the meal. We both ordered fish, fish and chips as well as the haddock rarebit. Haddock did not come with the sides mentioned on the menu, instead of leeks, it was mushrooms and instead of fondant potatoes, it was boiled baby potatoes. Fish from fish and chips was in an extremely thick batter and the batter wasn't fully cooked. I sent it back and now I'm not in the mood for a new main. We both ordered dessert as we were both still hungry. I took a taste of the chocolate torte and it tasted odd. I tasted again thinking my taste buds were off and then had my friend taste it. We were both convinced it was sitting near some very strong smelling items in the fridge as to me it initially tasted like they cut it with a dirty knife. Once we got home, we took out the piece we brought home and it smelled of very strong cheese and the deep fryer. I would not recommend this place for the food but the service was great. Everything was very overpriced. I don't think you should leave anywhere hungry after spending 120 quid.

It is nice, but it is expensive. We came here with some friends for a nice meal out. I will say that some of the food was really quite tasty, but for what amounted to burger and chips and a pie (fancy pie, granted, but we'll get into that...) £63 a head was just way more than I felt it was worth. Homemade lemonade / ginger beer, 8/10, very tasty, refreshing with hints of herbs that gave it some beautiful aftertaste. Very nice. Scallops, 8/10, delicious, perfectly tender. Pork scratchings, 6/10, was sort of expecting proper scratchings here, nice juicy layer of fat, crunchy outer layer. Instead we got the pork equivalent of a prawn cracker that could just as easily been bought from a supermarket. If they do indeed make these in-house there was really not a lot to show for it. Burger and chips, 6/10, twas a burger and that's about all I remember. Clearly not a winner. Beef shin and marrow pie, 8/10 for the filling, 5/10 for the pie crust. The slow cooked meat was tender, the richness of the marrow was unctious - if this had been presented as beef stew I would be dinging it's praises. But I feel a ways about pies with no bottom. I was looking forward to the balance between the saucy interior and a doughy flaky buttery crust. Instead no bottom (no bottom!) and the lid on top was this odd wafer thing that jist didn't do it for me. Side of broccoli, 7/10, nice enough, but I remember it being slightly overcooked. Peach frangipane, 6/10. Quite mediocre flavours all around for this one. The peach was sort stewed, no caramelisation. The frangipane itself was fairly basic and nothing stood put. Quite disappointing. In summary, elements of this meal were fantastic but the parts that let it down really did let it down and at this price point that's just not acceptable.

We went for lunch during Fringe. The beetroot salad was excellent, as was the Old Fashioned. Service was somewhat surly and bit welcoming. She had the steak pie, which was good, still having a bit of marrow bone acting as vent in the pie, allowing the marrow to melt over the contents. A nice touch! I had the fish and chips. The chips were perfect...probably the top five chips I've ever eaten. The fish itself was nothing to write home about. Restaurant itself was lovely in its decor and layout. Overall a good experience, but underwhelming.

Amazing gastropub in charming Stockbridge. If we were to move to Edinburgh we would live here. Beautiful part of the city. This pub is well known and Michelin quality. Probably one of, if not "the" best meal we have had. And we live in Italy and have had our share of unimaginably delicious food. We had the mushroom appetizer that let my husband speechless. I had the lobster special and it was absolutely delicious. Service was also excellent. Not one thing wrong. Love it and would recommend it 💯. Will definitly be on our list if we return to Edinburgh.

The food was brilliantly executed and was so well balanced, service was incredible and super attentive and they were super knowledgeable on whiskey which was great! Would definitely recommend :)

Absolutely fantastic Scottish food experience! We had an amazing meal at The Scran & Scallie and can honestly say it was one of the highlights of our time in Edinburgh. The steak pie deserves a special mention — it was outstanding. Perfectly cooked, incredibly tender meat, rich and flavourful gravy, and beautiful pastry. True Scottish comfort food done to perfection. Easily one of the best meat pies I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the food feels authentic but refined, and the quality of ingredients really shows. Portions are generous, flavours are balanced, and everything tastes genuinely homemade rather than touristy. A brilliant place to try traditional Scottish cuisine at its best. We would absolutely come back and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

Best meal we ate in Scotland by far. Our favorites: scallops, scallops, scallops. We should've ordered three of these. Smoked salmon and pie were also delicious. The fish and chips were good, especially the chips. The local ginger beer was also fantastic. My friends said this was the best haggis of our trip. Service was fantastic.

An understated yet refined gastropub away from the "trang" of Edinburgh's old district. As much as I was ready to channel my inner Braveheart after navigating the Fringe crowds, the journey to the quieter Stockbridge district for a dinner here brought out my inner Alan Cumming (and I mean that in a good way). The restaurant offers a masterclass in underpromising and overdelivering. Both "scran" and "scallie" aren't exactly compliments. Even the menu has self-effacing plays on a Scottish accent -- "sit ye doon yer welcome." All of this in a casual fireside atmosphere that could be mistaken for a nice living room filled with tables and chairs. The joke is on us though because the food and service are refined. Fish pie had chunks of fresh seafood covered by a thick layer of well-seasoned mash. The creaminess of the hen egg complemented the crunch and earthiness of the mushrooms. The meal was well choreographed by the staff. So much so that even in this crowded restaurant we felt as if we were given center stage. Hmm -- that could be why this place won all those awards. Next time on to Leith to sample The Kitchin!

nice to get away from the touristy areas of EDI. Had a good meal with friends and enjoyed some traditional Scottish food. Restaurant has smaller more intimate rooms with few tables or a wide open space. We liked the smaller room we were brought to. A little easier for conversation. Interesting decor. Service was friendly and attentive. I'd recommend a visit if your from out of town looking for traditional food.

A search for a Scottish restaurant brought me to this gastropub and it was worth the walk in the rain. It is clearly super popular and busy which is a good sign. The food and service were very good. I am a fan and would happily come back.

This was my first meal in Edinburgh, and one of the best. The scallops and Cauliflower starter wa wonderfully presented and delicious. The fish pie is like a warm hug for the belly. The fish was fresh and the potatoes pillowy soft.

Little did we know when booking that this was a Michelin star restaurant - The coziest one I've ever seen! Tucked in a fantastic neighborhood of Stockbridge, lies the best Scottish fare. Everything was devoured - clean plates.

It's always nice to visit a restaurant in a nice neighborhood that doesn't have many other tourists in it, especially in a tourist town. Where we were tourists. We took a walk through Edinburgh to visit a local stamp shop and tried this delightful restaurant on our walk back downtown. We shared some very fresh and briny oysters to start, then I had the pan fried cod with mussels, tomatoes and potatoes in pesto sauce, and hubby got the Highland Wagyu beef burger and chips. The cod was excellent, with a pan sear that would make most chefs envious, and light, fresh pesto with delicious mussels and potatoes sliced thin and cooked to chip-like crispness. And what a burger and fries; this Highland beef burger rated, first, Best On The Trip, then, Best In Scotland, and, finally, Best This Year by my usually critical husband. Totally elevated and delicious food, in a really pretty restaurant with good service. If I lived in the area, this would be my go-to lunch spot.

I can see why The Scran & Scallie has a lot of rave reviews. Cocktails? On point. Food? Incredibly delicious. Ambiance? Traditional but warm and inviting. Service? Friendly, prompt and courteous. Walking in through the bar, headed to the restaurant portion, we were sat in about the middle of the room. A nice, lovely table where we could people and kitchen watch. We ordered some cocktails. I got the blood orange and my mans got an Old Fashioned. Both were incredible. I only wish I could have tried more but the length of the day was getting to us and we didn't want to over serve ourselves. I could not decide what I wanted to eat on the menu. There are so many appetizing things that it was actually very hard for me to make a decision. I really wanted that steak pie, especially when you see that bone popping out. But, we decided to start with oysters and then have a monkfish special and a steak of the day (sirloin I believe it was.) Both were great choices. I'm so happy about the amount of food versus price situation here. They could choose to charge more but I'm glad that they don't. This was the first time we ordered dessert the whole trip (that didn't come with the meal) and it was divine! The best sticky toffee I've ever had, hands down (and I may have a real recipe from a very famous celebrity chef who is known for sticky toffee.)

I had the steak pie with a side of bread that were both very good. I made reservations and they called me the day before to confirm. My only issue was the service. This was the first time in my life I felt unwelcome in a restaurant. It stated with seating me at probably the worst table in the restaurant. I would have let it go, but the place was empty and the seat actually smelled bad. They accommodated a table change, but all my interactions felt odd. It's hard to describe as I've never experienced this before. No one even said thank you or have a nice day when I left. They also add on an optional 12.5% gratuity. I paid it because the young lady who took my order was kind and helpful. If it was based on food, I'd be back, but I'm not going to risk ruining a good meal with a dark cloud over my head.

The best meal we had during 3 days in Edinburgh. Do have a cocktail or malt whiskey to start off, they have a good selection. The staff are helpful: if you ask them, they will help you pick out a dish that suits your taste. The main dining room is small, but comfortable. Do check out the daycare area in the back near the washrooms - nice to hear the laughter of children! Four of us came for dinner and everyone found their dishes flavorful and well-prepared. I recommend Scran and Scallie without hesitation.

Beautiful space with an amazing play room for children. Waitstaff is knowledgeable and attentive. Everything we had was good from signature cocktails to specials to tried and true menu items. The scallops were excellent. I enjoyed the basil cocktail and we all enjoyed the haggis appetizer. The venison tartare special and pork filet were fantastic. Excellent meal - we would definitely come back!

My husband and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary here! Cozy atmosphere with excellent food and service. We got the scallops for an appetizer but it was a huge disappoint.. 3 small scallops for £24 is outrageous! Had we known we would have got something different. For mains we had the Fish Pie and Crispy Lamb Shoulder.. both filling and delicious. We finished off with sticky toffee pudding and creme brûlée. Highly recommend for an intimate nice night out!

A culinary experience is one of flavor and more importantly, balance. The meal preserves the Scottish traditional food, but elevate it with a touch of modernity that accentuates the balance in food. The cheesy scallops is counterbalanced by the refreshing and zesty citrus flavor that betrays tradition without being over bearing on one's tongue. The pies were also exceptionally prepared where the crusts were thin but served well in locking the flavor inside. The service was standard relative to a restaurant of a similar stature: Prompt, Professional, though somewhat distant. The dining environment was remarkably modern yet unmistakably Celtic inspired. If you are staying in Edinburgh, it's certainly a must try.

Everything here was top notch! The serve shareable plates and encouraged us to get four small plate and 2 sides but we did 2 smalls, 1 main, and a 2 sides. Plenty enough!! There was a bit of a gap in service from dinner to dessert. My husband ordered a port with dessert and that was a long time coming. And paying the bill took a while for them to bring it. Otherwise food was splendid. Perfectly seasoned. The broccoli was spot on with a tender crisp texture. Dessert was delicious. The meringue or Pavlova just melted in your mouth!

Our best meal in Scotland! To the fish and chips, steak and ale pie, the best sticky toffee pudding we've had and house made ginger beer we wish we could put The Scran and Scallie in our bag and take them back to California with us. If it wasn't our last day there we definitely would have been back many times. Maxim was fantastic and it was great getting to know him while we were there. One of the highlights of our trip for sure.

Fantastic dining experience, the service was spectacular, and the ambiance was very positive. My only gripe is that I didn't realize that the portions were so small (perhaps I am an ignoramus when it comes to gastronomic units of measurement). Also, the mackerel was too salty.

Jovial service. Festive (loud) atmosphere casual eatery. With what I believe to be Scottish food staples. Everything was tasty, even their interpretation of a Haggie. Main course portions are on the larger side. The 3 of us could have split two main courses instead of the 3. If I'm back in Edinburgh 8d definitely come back. If you're looking for a place to try some Scottish food there's nowhere like Scran&Scallop. I suggest booking ahead of time as I did.

Great spot! Wish it was bigger, the only downfall is if you show up early for your reservation they don't have a big waiting area space, but the food is amazing. Highly recommend.

The food here was amazing (we had steak pie and fish pie), but I was particularly impressed by their cheerful, efficient attentiveness. Their guidance of our clearly amateur understanding of whiskies was patient and helpful. If I was asked to recommend a single restaurant in Edinburgh, this would be the one.

Food was delicious. Started off with the scallops and haggis. We got the pork cheek and steak pie. Pork cheek was tender and had good flavor. Steak pie was flavorful and hearty. Perfect for a cold day. Dessert was a chocolate truffle cake. No too sweet and had a good balance of not being too heavy.

Go for the fish, steak pies, friendly service and homey atmosphere! Our group also enjoyed the turkey special and sumptuous desserts including sticky toffee pudding, chocolate fondant and salted caramel ice cream.

My ole lady and I were watching one of those cooking shows and The Kitchin was featured.... we wanted to go but it was full, so we came here instead and I think this is more our speed anyway... (non-white table clothes, etc...) It's a beautiful restaurant... Wood, chairs, windows, clean... what you want. Note to self; when we booked the reservation you have the option for a table in the bar area or general restaurant room/area... Take the general restaurant area every time... The bar area is not what you would expect.. the bar consists of 3-seats and noone was using it, then there are a few tables, and the room is basically walled off. The other restaurant room is where its at.... open floor plan, big windows, cool vibe... what you want... And now, back to the yelp review: I had the cod and my ole lady had the fish and chips. Both were excellent. We would re-attend, and we would recco...

Our family's first meal in Scotland and it was excellent! It was my first time ever trying haggis, and I was shocked by how much I loved it. The steak pie was also delicious. My husband enjoyed the half pint beer offerings. Service was excellent with friendly staff. A great gastronomical start to our vacation.

Great place in Stockbridge! We had a selection of different dishes, I had the salmon salad. Very nice salmon and enjoyed the freshness of everything. My dad had the burger, which he also enjoyed. It's a nice place for a lunch if you're in that area!

A friend recommended The Scran and Scallie for our trip to Edinburgh. We weren't disappointed. Our group had the steak pie, fish and chips and sourdough bread. Everything was amazing. The ones who ate fish and chips said it was some of the best they had ever had. They loved the tartar sauce.

A don't miss for sure!!! The food, atmosphere and staff were great!! One of the best meals we had in Edinburgh for sure!!! Save up you appetite because your gonna want dessert!! The toffee pudding was amazing!!!

Accompanying someone who is much more foodie than I am, we checked out this place for weekday lunch. Loved the area that it was in - lots of little independent shops, great vibe to this part of town. Service was notably excellent, knowledgeable and friendly. Suggestions were offered with experience behind the reasoning. Although I would classify this place as upscale pub, it still had a casual aura to it. Interestingly enough I found our starters to be much more tasty than our mains. I found most of the main dishes fell flat or were on the bland side. The local draft beer, some I had never even heard of, made the meal that much better. Overall a nice experience. Perhaps we chose the wrong mains, but I would still return here to try other dishes. Enjoyed the place in general.

After traveling most of Europe by train, eating in some of the best cities for food, the Scran and Scallie blew us away with its delicious food. This was easily one of my favorite restaurants. We had the steak, the steak pie, the burger, the haggis starter, some scotch, and perhaps the worlds best dessert, sticky toffee pudding. We cannot recommend this restaurant enough.

We came on a friend's recommendation and it was fantastic. Just be warned that it is very busy and you will need a reservation. We barely got the last free table and we went for lunch. We started with the haggis which was fried and excellently seasoned. I got the fish pie. I asked ahead as I am allergic to shellfish and they made a special pie without any shellfish just for me. I appreciated the attention to detail for the allergy. What came out was a fantastic fish pie with large chunks of different fishes (salmon, cod, I think a few others). It tasted great, was very well executed, and was a good portion. Service was great, food was great. Would definitely return.

Make sure to reserve in advanced if you want to try this place. It's busy! I ordered Mac and cheese. (kids menu).. So tasty. Next time I visit Scotland again.. I'm going to. Come back and try other food. The fish and chips and huge! Friend said its tasty!

We attended with a pretty huge party and I'm very satisfied with the service we received. I can't remember the gentleman's name that was our primary server, but he was friendly, attentive, and quick. The restaurant was very busy when we were there, so it was impressive he was able to handle everything! My fish pie (the first I've ever had) was pretty good, though I wasn't sure what to expect and it was more rich than I would have preferred, though still light somehow thanks to all the fish and fresh herbs. I enjoyed my haggis appetizer, but wished there was more haggis! Overall, a pleasant experience.

Food was wonderful, not the usual fare. We booked about three weeks before we went and all that was left was high top tables near the door, so book early. The staff was very helpful and pleasant.

One of the most superlative Scottish pub experiences I've had. To be true and honest, this is an upscale pub, but they do it right. My group feasted on the game terrine, the steak pie, the smoked haddock, the fish & chips and endive salad. The smoked haddock was unique and tasty with chunks of smoked haddock atop a beautifully prepared barley with fresh herbs around the rim. The balance of the dish was great. The fish and chips were maybe the best I've ever had and maybe the best in all of Scotland. The batter for the fish was golden and delicate. The cook on the fries was literal perfection. Last, but certainly not least, was the steak pie. The presentation was extraordinary. The scoring in the pastry crust immaculate. In the center of the pie was a round of bone marrow. Before you begin eating, the idea is to lift up the bone and all of that delicious marrow spills into the steak and gravy. This place also features a wide selection of wines and also locally brewed ales. I had a few pints of the Edinburgh Gold and it was very good. Overall: warm environment, great service, and the best pub food one could have. I have no suggestions for improvement as this place needs no improvement. 5 stars with a bullet.

Back again after four years and just as delicious. Waiters adorable and funny. Cocktails divine.

My family and I have been vacationing in Edinburgh and saw that this restaurant was reviewed highly and that we ought to give it a try. The service was accommodating, kind, and cheerful. The atmosphere is busy but not overwhelming, same with the decor. The drinks were creative and perfectly balanced in flavor. All of the seafood was fantastic, zero complaints. The food was served at a perfect temperature, hot and fresh. Even the children's food was obviously made with care! I went in with average expectations and they were exceeded, definitely the best place I ate while in Scotland.

When we first knew we were going to visit Edinburgh, we started checking out restaurants and their menus online, and the Michelin-starred the Kitchin kept popping up. Sounded fantastic, but then saw that a prix fixe ran something like £80 or £90 per person. That's beyond our means--at least if we're being responsible--but par for the course for Michelin-starred restaurants, I reckon. But I then discovered that Tom Kitchin is also the part-owner of the Scran and Scallie, which also appears in all the Edinburgh restaurant write-ups and which, while hardly cheap, is easily more economical than the chef's namesake place. And it was only about a seven-minute walk from where we were staying over near Dean Village. Visiting was a no-brainer. The Scran and Scallie is basically an upscale, farm-to-table gastropub. By 2019, this isn't any kind of radical concept, but when it's only your second night in Scotland, it seemed like a great idea. The menu contains a bunch of Scottish and British classics, some reimagined or retrofitted for 21st century tastes. Mackerel tartare as a starter wasn't any kind of particularly gastropub dish, but it was the best and most refined thing on the table on this night. Wonderfully put together--a sort of Mediterranean flavor profile--with beautiful, fresh fish. This wasn't any kind of "scran," to say the least--I cold have easily eaten about five more plates of it. Haggis at the S & S is given an updated treatment--the haggis itself served in a kind of fritter form, the tatties rendered as very good house-made crisps, and the neeps a turnip reduction (if I recall correctly). Interesting, but was it more satisfying than some of the more traditional versions we tried while in Scotland? I can't really say that it was. Seeking out fish--we live in landlocked Ohio in the U.S.--I went with the smoked haddock rarebit with spinach. Maybe not the best choice for me, as I'm generally not the biggest fan of cheese-lathered food, but very well executed, with the fish nicely cooked. The wife ordered fish and chips, which was straightforwardly done and came in the typically monstrous portion for this dish. This was good, but not elevated in any way above the best fish and chips we could recall having. In fact, not as good as some we'd sampled elsewhere. Overall, very good, and recommended, and maybe we didn't order the best mains on the menu. (I was envious of some plates at adjacent tables--steak pie, and I think some kind of gamebird special.) I'm not sure what whisky flights usually go for in UK cities, but 20 pounds seemed reasonable for what I ordered (had never tried anything from the relatively local Glenkinchie, and it was very pleasant), at least by US standards. Our server was attentive and friendly, and quite helpful with explanations of menu items. The atmosphere at the S & S is another reason to visit--it's cozy, convivial, and lively. I would say that having dogs hanging out in the restaurant is cool--we spent the whole trip missing own dogs back home--but this one Golden Retriever in my sightline spent about five minutes straight giving me the evil eye from about five tables away. Slightly unnerving!

Had a really nice dinner here. The food didn't blow me away, in fact it was all a bit heavy for us which I guess is what to expect with pub food, but I loved the beer here. You can pretty much get a flight of all the beers on tap for like 10 pounds. The beer is local and tasty, loved the ipa from Leith we had. The sausage and mash was rich and savory, loved the gravy. The onion rings didn't add much but made it feel all even a bit heavier. The burger was sadly way over-cooked, almost charry, but the fish and chips was very fluffy and tasty, though again fairly heavy.

Overall disappointing experience. Atmosphere and restaurant design are quite nice, but the service was uneven with one younger woman who was lovely and helpful and one older man who was grumpy and gruff bordering on downright rude. Both times I talked to him, when taking my order and requesting vinegar, he acted like he was doing me a favor. The food was equally uneven. My dish of classic fish and chips was delicious with a good sized portion. My boyfriend's dish of haggis, neeps and tatties was awful. He is Scottish and lives abroad and was looking forward to haggis so we called ahead to see if they had it. It's usually only served as an appetizer but they said they could double it and serve as a main. When it arrived it was beautifully presented but the dish was a failure. The haggis itself was fine, but the turnips were julienned into ribbons like a garnish and therefore hard to eat. The potatoes were the real fail though. They had been overworked and were gluey.

So i ordered the Steak of the day, £38 ok. Listed as 230gr, what i was served was THAT! Bo more than 110gr. I questioned the waiter, he replied that since i ordered it medium well, it had melted away LOL. JJoke of a place for wannabees only. Overhyped overpriced tiny portion do not recommend.

Reserved weeks in advance and was seated at a table for two in an alcove off the main dining room. The table was shoved in a corner next to a floor lamp and extra cords covered in dust. What a way to feel welcomed. I should have spoken out but didn't. Service was bad and food was mediocre. Worst meal of our entire ten day trip to the UK.

This place is so cute! Everyone was so nice too. It's a fancy pub. My cousin made a reservation for four. We were seated immediately and were also greeted immediately by our waitress. We started with a few gin drinks - they were delicious. I had the fish pie which was delicious, I was worried that it was going to be too rich. But the chunks of fish was super fresh and well seasoned and the layers of mashed potatoes were perfect. We also had two meat pies with bone marrow which everyone loved! I am looking forward to my next trip in Edinburgh so I can go back!

Had dinner here last night for the first time. Between making the booking and arriving we had friends say to avoid it and discovered that 2019 was not a good year for it and its sister establishments as far as health inspections went, but we decided to go ahead. Even prior to 18:00 it was doing a good trade, of which as much was from locals as tourists it seemed, so you couldn't help but hear two or three other conversations during the course of the meal. Not an issue. Seasonal cocktails were listed on their own menu & so, having decided to have a bloody mary, I checked to see what there was. Not being a fan of tequila I opted for the bloody screwdriver rather than the bloody maria. Mistake, as all that came was a £10 vodka & orange. Should have just asked for the standard version. On to the winelist. What's wrong with listing things in order of price? Most folk opt for the second cheapest bottle & yet you need to hunt through to find out the lowest priced option so as to know the benchmark. Having it listed randomly along the lines of £54, £32, £2100, £60 isn't very helpful. The house red, once discovered, was though a decent drop. Once you get past the overly affected menu design the choices are nicely varied and you do get good portion sizes - for the second time in the weekend my starter led to me failing to finish my main. A third piece of toast with the initial pate would have been handy, the crumble topping on the egg accompanying my ham unfortunately masked the artistry of that element of the dish & the chips were nothing special. The meat itself was great. My partner had no such issues & her crab starter and fish main were polished off in fine style. Both of us enjoyed our desserts although you can't really mess up with cheesecake. Toilets were fine but the background music throughout the evening was like Radio 2 minus the DJs. Nothing wrong with that per se but a bit incongruous - why not have the work of contemporary Scottish acts playing away (rather than just the one hackneyed Proclaimers tune and a couple of folky ones amidst Kings of Leon, Queen etc.)? The folk duo in the bar as we left took the twee factor up to 11 but seemed to be working for the couple who looked like they'd just stepped off a grouse moor in the 1890s. Worth the money (just) but won't be rushing back.

This is a very nice and simple bar /restaurant in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh. The Burgers a large and delicious. But the best part of the meal was the potatoes and chorizo side bowl. Simply delicious.

We were staying in the neighbourhood and were told that this was one of the places to dine at during our stay, so we were very excited to get a table on a Friday night even though we arrived without a reservation. The only quid pro quo was that we had to finish within 90 minutes, since the table was booked later on. No worries, we could make that work. The menu looked very enticing, and we had trouble homing in on just what of the many tempting options we wanted to go for. In the end we made our selections, including a mackerel tartare starter, a chicken liver parfait starter, and three mains: roast lemon sole, baked cod and lamb rump. All of the food was beautifully presented and very tasty. The lemon sole in particular had a beautiful sauce and was perfectly seasoned, and in fact so was the cod. The lamb, however, while also well prepared and nicely presented, was far and away the smallest dish we were served, with a very small portion of lamb and a large portion of beans and vegetables. For a dish that cost the most of anything on the menu--£26.50-we definitely came away with the impression that the lamb-to-pound ratio was very skewed against us. Given the time restriction we were facing, we were a bit concerned with the pace of service, which could be a bit slow, though the place was packed and everyone was very busy. And at no time did anyone make us feel like we had to hurry up. There was a bit of a kerfuffle with the bill when we prepared to go, as we were presented with a bill for a different table entirely (whose bill was £30 less than ours...). We caught the error in time, however, and were soon presented with the right one. So, while I would come back here, I would lean in favour of the fish dishes and away from the meats, since the pricing on the former seems a lot more favourable.

Because the Scran and Scallie is run by a celebrity chef, I was fully expecting some level of pretentiousness, but that is not the case here. The decor reminded me of a rural American style family restaurant and while reservations are tight, the place is chock full of families with children and they have a small playroom. Portions are HUGE and the food is rustic. The pies are awesome, and the ham hock is delicious. The drinks are slightly pricey, but tasty. I love the neighborhood where the restaurant is located. Quaint with lots of small restaurants and shops. Recommend

We had the best airbnb in the world (fact) and part of the appeal was that it was just a 2 minute walk from The Scran and Scallie. We popped here for Saturday brunch and arrived early as per their advice on the Friday afternoon - after 10am it can be hard to get a table, apparently. We got there at around 9am on Saturday and so had no issues. The place is nice and relaxing, the perfect way to start your weekend, really. The staff were friendly and chatty, and we both ordered the full Scottish breakfasts with poached eggs. It was £11.75 which is a little steeper than I usually pay for breakfast but the sausages were home-made and everything was of a really high standard. The breakfast was delicious - really nice bacon and sausages which you could tell were locally made. Even the black pudding was nice and I never like black pudding! I really enjoyed breakfasting here and would definitely come back if I was staying in the area again.

After reading the great reviews on Yelp and travel blogs, I knew this would be the perfect place to have our first dinner in Scotland. I cannot speak about the parking since we walked to the restaurant from the center of the city--only took about 25 minutes, but I can speak about everything else. I made a reservation a couple of weeks before our trip, and the lady on the phone was very friendly. We were seated right away at a cozy table. The restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere. We were in jeans and tennis shoes from sightseeing all day, so don't feel like you need to dress up to dine here. The wait staff was attentive and our meal came fast. We ordered haggis to start, which was presented in a very nice way. I was nervous to try haggis after hearing what it was, but it was also something I felt I should try, being in Scotland and all! I am glad I did, because it was no big deal. It really just tasted like seasoned ground beef. I have nothing to compare it to, so it is quite possible it is not as traditional as other places, especially because of the fancy way it was presented. But, it was no big deal, and tasted good. I ordered sausage and mash and the BF ordered fish pie. He loved his fish pie! I was not as crazy about my sausage and mash. The sausage just didn't have a flavor that I was used to and the mashed potatoes were somewhat bland, but I was fine eating it anyway. For dessert we had some kind of pudding, but I cannot remember what it was called (I added a photo anyway). It was a nice ending to the meal. We also enjoyed wine, which was good as well. It is not a restaurant I would rave about, but it was a good overall dining experience, and I am glad we went.

It was a long day of touring for me and this was fairly close to our hotel. I liked the menu and reviews on Yelp and we decided to give it a try. What a great place! It is not in Old Town and doesn't seem like a touristy place (which I like). This place was packed! I ordered the Spelt and Lentil Burger (the common misconception here in my area is "Haggis is served with everything" and everything is meat. This was simply an amazing "burger"! I want to make one!! I have to say, though I ordered the drink special and wow, I want to make that, too! Johnnie Walker Dark, mulled wine, lemon sherbet and egg white. If I didn't have to get up early the next morning, I would have gotten another one! The service was very good and they were very kind.

Lovely place! I came here as a solo diner based on the New York Times' recommendation, and I was not disappointed. I received prompt and cordial service, and my food and drink were delicious. Sometimes restaurants can make you feel a little weird when you're by yourself, but the staff here made me feel very welcome despite my American fumbling with some of the lingo (sorry for not understanding what a 'wee puddin' was, Megan!) This would be a super cute place for a date night, or if you're visiting Edinburgh and want a lovely place to eat regardless of the occasion.
